The State of Florida has announced that Trayvon Martin's killer will face second-degree murder charges. The announcement comes approximately a month after the unarmed seventeen-year-old was fatally shot by George Zimmerman in a gated Florida community. Zimmerman claimed he shot Martin in self-defense and was released by police on the grounds of Florida's 'Stand-Your-Ground' law. There has been national and international condemnation of the release of Zimmerman, with rallies held around the country. Angela Corey, a Florida special prosecutor announced at a press conference that Zimmerman will face charges. ""Today we filed an information charging George Zimmerman with murder in the second degree, a capias has been issued for his arrest," said Corey. "With the filing of that information and the issuing of the capias he will have a right to appear in front of a magistrate in Seminole County within 24 hours of his arrest and thus formal prosecution will begin." Corey also reported that Zimmerman turned himself into police custody earlier that day. In reaction, Trayvon Martin's parents thanked the people who held rallies in support of their son. "First of all I want to say thank god... we simply wanted an arrest, we wanted nothing more; nothing less," told Sabryna Fulton, Martin's mother. "We just wanted an arrest. We got it and I say thank-you. Thank-you Lord, Thank-you Jesus. Secondly I just want to speak from my heart to your heart because a heart has no colour, it's not black, it's not white, it's red. And I want to say thank-you from my heart to your heart. Thank-you.” If convicted George Zimmerman could be sentenced to life in prison. In Florida those charges carry a minimum sentence of 25-years.
