One issue is that if you insulate your loft with 270mm of insulation, as the Government recommends, then you can't store things in the loft any more without squashing the insulation. But squashing the insulation reduces its effectiveness, which defeats the whole idea of having it!

Fortunately, I've seen several new products that have come on to the market recently which return the loft into an area for storage. Google "raised loft floor", for example.
