Today I am reviewing the new horror film MAXINE.

00;00;06;10 - 00;00;07;08
Unknown
Hello, everybody.

00;00;07;08 - 00;00;13;02
Unknown
Welcome to. You're watching a movie with Silas Linden Stine. I am your host, Silas Linden. Stine.

00;00;13;02 - 00;00;25;12
Unknown
As I said today, I am reviewing the newest horror film MAXINE. MAXINE is part three of a trilogy by Ty West, directed and written by Ty West.

00;00;25;12 - 00;00;30;02
Unknown
The first film, the series, was kicked off by X.

00;00;30;05 - 00;00;33;14
Unknown
The movie X took place in like the 19

00;00;33;14 - 00;00;36;17
Unknown
and 1970s. Then we

00;00;36;17 - 00;00;39;05
Unknown
were about about an adult film

00;00;39;05 - 00;00;52;27
Unknown
production happening on a little rural town in the U.S. And then the follow up movie was Pearl, which took place like in the the thirties or forties.

00;00;52;27 - 00;01;10;29
Unknown
And, well, while it followed, one of the villains from the first movie. And then MAXINE follows the I don't know what to say odd to do for this film, but the lead actress.

00;01;11;01 - 00;01;33;03
Unknown
She she the only survivor from the original film X. So this takes place in 1984. So we're looking I don't have the exact dates for the first one, but this takes place years after the original film. She was the lone survivor and yeah, and so that's where this is.

00;01;33;03 - 00;01;46;11
Unknown
So as I said, it's a horror suspense film. Rated R one hour and 44 minutes written, directed by Ty West, the cast of Mia Goth, reprising her role as MAXINE Minx.

00;01;46;14 - 00;01;49;13
Unknown
That's what we're calling her. I think she has a different last name for this one,

00;01;49;13 - 00;01;54;13
Unknown
along with Elizabeth Debicki. Moses Sumney, Michelle

00;01;54;13 - 00;01;57;03
Unknown
Monaghan, Monahan, Bobby

00;01;57;03 - 00;01;59;10
Unknown
Cannavale, Halsey,

00;01;59;10 - 00;02;05;18
Unknown
Lily Collins and Giancarlo Esposito. Esposito.

00;02;05;18 - 00;02;18;01
Unknown
But last but not least, Kevin Bacon. Kevin. Kevin Bacon's got a really fun role in this. I think you'll do him. And Esposito. Esposito of wonderful actors.

00;02;18;01 - 00;02;25;27
Unknown
It's great seeing them in this. I was surprised. I saw no trailers before this. I wanted to come in with this really fresh

00;02;25;27 - 00;02;26;18
Unknown
overall

00;02;26;18 - 00;02;33;11
Unknown
over overall, a very enjoyable film. Very enjoyable. It's probably my third favorite of the of the three,

00;02;33;11 - 00;02;41;22
Unknown
but I think it's a very enjoyable horror film. And I think if you're a fan of this of of the series, does it help complete it?

00;02;41;23 - 00;02;43;05
Unknown
Maybe. In some ways

00;02;43;05 - 00;02;52;16
Unknown
the story in 1980s, Hollywood adult film star and aspiring actress MAXINE Menkes finally gets her break. Big break, however,

00;02;52;16 - 00;03;01;00
Unknown
as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Los Angeles, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past. Hmm.

00;03;01;00 - 00;03;01;13
Unknown
So,

00;03;01;13 - 00;03;05;28
Unknown
as I said, good film, good, solid horror, solid

00;03;05;28 - 00;03;07;25
Unknown
scare. I was scared.

00;03;07;25 - 00;03;08;25
Unknown
Hands up.

00;03;08;28 - 00;03;19;25
Unknown
Arms up on my face. Going like, ooh, some some little gruesome moments. There's some blood. I don't know. Let's. Oh, that's Holly Slasher. There were some slashes.

00;03;19;25 - 00;03;33;26
Unknown
And I think my imagination took. Took a hold of me. A la the OC. There are some pretty gnarly kills in this. And now that it. Now that I say that. Yeah, yeah.

00;03;34;01 - 00;03;46;04
Unknown
Some hard to look at times, but least I can cover my eyes for a brief time or and not look and I get the just wants the reaction from the audience is mellowed out a bit.

00;03;46;04 - 00;03;59;26
Unknown
someone asked me I would tell them about the original series and I was excited about seeing this film and they're asking me for the slasher and I, I still say no with the caveat like, it's not, it's not clean, that's for sure.

00;03;59;26 - 00;04;13;21
Unknown
just be prepared to cover your eyes and not look sometimes. But I think the nervousness in and the story that it creates is pretty, pretty worth it. So MAXINE is there.

00;04;13;21 - 00;04;28;12
Unknown
she gets a role in the film pure the Puritan too like a sequel is made up franchise. And this story kind of follows follows that if

00;04;28;12 - 00;04;47;03
Unknown
her getting on this and the effects in her life, she's an adult film star or film person, I guess, and trying to break into the regular mainstream films and which, you know, as we've probably heard, if you if you follow this kind of thing in real life, it can be very challenging.

00;04;47;03 - 00;04;51;21
Unknown
Mia, Mia Goth plays MAXINE.

00;04;51;21 - 00;05;14;24
Unknown
She does a great job showing how haunted her character is by the past. There's some flashbacks of the previous film, and you still see that desire of her wanting to be famous that she had in the first one. She'll do anything to be famous, but that the PTSD, the

00;05;14;24 - 00;05;23;01
Unknown
the nervousness of life now that that event caused.

00;05;23;01 - 00;05;32;12
Unknown
She's a stronger Roman than she was in the beginning of the first one. So you've seen that growth in her. And she's just

00;05;32;12 - 00;05;50;20
Unknown
I mean, she's not a villain in this, but she's not taking crap from nobody, right? I just think she did such a fine job. And then Kevin Bacon, as this a detective in this is our private detective.

00;05;50;22 - 00;06;08;06
Unknown
He's he's really great. There's like, great little character role for Kevin Bacon. I think you're going to really enjoy him in this. Overall, though, I like the tone of the film. I really liked, you know, the eighties, the celebration of the eighties. They really got it.

00;06;08;06 - 00;06;16;20
Unknown
They really hit that well. And this world that Ty West, the director, is playing with, it's a

00;06;16;20 - 00;06;17;12
Unknown
it's interesting.

00;06;17;12 - 00;06;36;16
Unknown
It's fun. It's a I don't know how to describe the quite style of the the RBA, but it feels, you know, like a part. There's a VHS movie rental store as part of the film that's just that's just there. And there are parts of me that think the the film looks like

00;06;36;16 - 00;06;38;24
Unknown
a video you would have watched in the eighties.

00;06;38;24 - 00;06;41;20
Unknown
So like, it's almost like it's imperfect.

00;06;41;20 - 00;07;08;27
Unknown
that's the tone of it. It's not like we're not highlighting the the CGI kind of stale look of modern films. I think I feel like there there is a little bit of grittiness to the of the filter they use on it for the for the movie because you know they use it high tech right but it doesn't necessarily feel high tech and just they capture the world just wonderfully.

00;07;08;29 - 00;07;20;27
Unknown
Now I'd say, you know what's my third best of this? I think it wasn't. I mean, part of the description says horror, suspense.

00;07;20;27 - 00;07;33;13
Unknown
And I think it is a lot more suspense then than the other ones were. Horror. I didn't until the like the third act of the film.

00;07;33;13 - 00;07;38;04
Unknown
I'm not even sure it would've just been a gross suspense.

00;07;38;07 - 00;08;04;02
Unknown
I'm not sure horror was quite there for me. And then I remember scenes and I'm like, No, I guess I guess it was there throughout it, but I didn't find it as intriguing as the first two. I wasn't. I was curious. I want to know what was what was happening to like who the killer is kind of of this.

00;08;04;02 - 00;08;29;28
Unknown
But I wasn't I wasn't dying of curiosity. I was kind of like, Oh, who's it going to be? Will the who's who they dredged up from the past for this? I'm not I don't know where they're going. It's just good. But I didn't feel like whoever they had was going to be this amazing revelation. And I still didn't feel that at the end.

00;08;30;01 - 00;08;53;20
Unknown
It was it was an interesting choice for the film, how it resolves. But I wasn't as excited about about the ending as I think they would want me to be. So it just didn't have that oomph in the last one. Also, I kind of felt like they could have shot this film or not. Like it wasn't really. Does it close out the trilogy?

00;08;53;20 - 00;09;13;06
Unknown
Well, kind of, yeah. I mean, you had to see the follow up. You have to see what she does. But this film didn't need to happen. I could have been they could have ended the last two and I'd be fine. The rumor has it that there's a fourth one being written it and it will depend on how well this film does.

00;09;13;08 - 00;09;47;15
Unknown
So maybe that will be a better conclusion. If they do do that, I don't know. I just think like I wasn't I wasn't necessarily disappointed. I guess I just wasn't at the end as fulfilled as I hoped I would be. But I do think the performances are worthy of of seeing. Certainly if you're a horror fan and if you like the other, to go see it.

00;09;47;17 - 00;10;14;22
Unknown
Ty West I really, I really like this. What I love when an actor or a director writer, kind of like when they write and direct it and it feels it feels consistent and the style feels consistent. I love I love the writer director creating the art because it doesn't. Don't get me wrong, filmmaking is a very team effort and it takes a team.

00;10;14;22 - 00;11;08;11
Unknown
It takes a village to create a film. You got to you can't do it by yourself for sure, but when you have the writer director together, that's the same person. It just helps create a good vision for the future, a vision for how this film will will look maybe leading into other films that's solid and that and that shows in this work there's there's there's that there's a la it's horror you know mysteries are particularly I think hard to shoot or to to talk about without giving anything away right I I'm trying the lesson from this film now that's it's challenging for this.

00;11;08;14 - 00;11;48;01
Unknown
I think the lesson is sort of that there are there are people who feel destined to stardom and they will do anything to get there. And so maybe it's a cautionary tale. Maybe it's or maybe maybe it's be careful what you wish for. That's another possibility. I don't know. It's every film has lessons. It has multiple lessons in it.

00;11;48;01 - 00;12;25;27
Unknown
And the this one and the horror films can be a little, I think, a little harder to find the messaging in that or something. I guess sometimes they're just absolutely full messages, but I think as I as I walk away from the film, I just I'm impressed by not impressed by what's the impression upon me is man MAXINE like, she just keeps going forward no matter what.

00;12;25;29 - 00;13;01;24
Unknown
Like she is so razor focused on being a star, she'll just she'll just repress everything else to to make her dreams come true. And maybe. Maybe it shows that we have to sacrifice. She's sacrificing not just her body and not just her soul, but, like, the ability to rest and just be at peace to to to go after this dream and I'm like, I.

00;13;01;26 - 00;13;33;15
Unknown
I don't have it in me. What? She had to go do whatever it takes, right? Like I was telling them after the film, like, I you know, some people will do anything it takes to make it. I, I don't do anything like I'm, I'm in Seattle. I'm far from the action. I'm not trying. I'm not only not willing to cross lines, I'm not willing to get out of bed.

00;13;33;18 - 00;14;01;28
Unknown
I guess Seattle is perfect for that. If Seattle did a horror movie, Seattle's monster would just be depression, right? It wouldn't be. You know, we we all need creatures. We don't need that Our tornado is we don't have hurricanes. What's going to get you your depression? And that would be an interesting horror film like my Make Great Depression.

00;14;02;00 - 00;14;27;08
Unknown
Great Depression, a villain. Let's try let the cops find depression out there. I guess it could also be like an inside out film, right? I guess. Anyway, in my in my rating system of love it like it or lose it, I'm going like I'm going to give MAXINE a like it. I did enjoy it. I was glad I saw it.

00;14;27;10 - 00;14;51;12
Unknown
It's not particularly long Our 44 minutes. Nice, nice movie in and out. Definitely worth the stunning performances by all. All cast. All cast is great and and see where time West takes you and I'll and I'll tell you this it gave me enough of an appetite for it that if a four comes out. Yeah, I'll go. I'll see what's going on.

00;14;51;12 - 00;15;14;13
Unknown
I don't know where she at this point is going to be in the nineties, maybe 2020s. Is she a grandma now, An adult film star. Grandma. I don't know, but I'll, I'll check it out. Ty West has earned my trust with this franchise and I want to see where he'll take it. So if, if you. If you film it, I will come, I will.

00;15;14;15 - 00;15;36;25
Unknown
Watching it. Not that, not look, that joke can go in a lot of ways based off this film, but I'm going to leave it there. Okay. But anyway, I don't know. Did you see MAXINE? Did it? Am I crazy? Did you love it? Did you like it? Did you lose it? I liked it. What did you think? Let me know in the comments and.
