<v Speaker 1>Wednesday, August twentieth, twenty twenty five, you are listening to
<v Speaker 1>The Daily Dose Sports podcast and I am your host,
<v Speaker 1>Clinton Daily, coming to you from my high city here
<v Speaker 1>in Denver, Colorado, and we are back for another week
<v Speaker 1>of talking sports with a dose of common sense. Hey,
<v Speaker 1>Happy Wednesday to you. I hope your week is going well.
<v Speaker 1>I hope that you, your family, your friends are all
<v Speaker 1>staying strong and you're all staying healthy right now, and
<v Speaker 1>I'm telling you right now, I have got a jam
<v Speaker 1>packed edition of The Daily Dose today because we are
<v Speaker 1>going to begin today digging into our full twenty twenty
<v Speaker 1>five twenty twenty six college football preview. But before we
<v Speaker 1>get to that, we're going to be joined by a
<v Speaker 1>very special guest. And I'm telling you right now, if
<v Speaker 1>you know a young athlete, doesn't matter where, if you
<v Speaker 1>know a young athlete right now playing high school sports
<v Speaker 1>of any kind, trust me, this is going to be
<v Speaker 1>something you are going to want to listen to. Hey,
<v Speaker 1>we have so much to cover today, we need to
<v Speaker 1>jump in right now. Joining us this week on the
<v Speaker 1>Daily Dose. We have a very special guest because Brady
<v Speaker 1>Kellogg is making an appearance here on The Dose on
<v Speaker 1>behalf of a group called Positive Athlete. Now. Positive Athlete
<v Speaker 1>is a high school student athletic recognition and development program.
<v Speaker 1>It's kind of starting to expand a little bit. Had
<v Speaker 1>some success in Georgia, had some success in Pennsylvania, and
<v Speaker 1>they're looking get this to find scholarship opportunities for young
<v Speaker 1>student athletes. Kind of sounds like they're starting to have
<v Speaker 1>some success. If you have a young athlete in your life,
<v Speaker 1>trust me, you're going to want to hear what Brady
<v Speaker 1>has to say. But first and foremost, Brady, welcome to
<v Speaker 1>the Daily Dose. We are happy to have you here
<v Speaker 1>with this today.
<v Speaker 2>Thanks happy to be.
<v Speaker 1>Here, Brady. Before we get going, and I'm gonna drill
<v Speaker 1>down on this in a minute, but give me a
<v Speaker 1>little bit about your background. How are you involved in athletics?
<v Speaker 1>How did you come to be involved in this? Were
<v Speaker 1>you a coach, were you an athlete? How did you
<v Speaker 1>get involved?
<v Speaker 3>Sure, I've always been a sports fan. Actually grew up
<v Speaker 3>in northern California, went to school out there as well
<v Speaker 3>at Stanford, and up until two years ago, my entire
<v Speaker 3>professional experience had been with the hometown Denver Broncos. Here
<v Speaker 3>so leading partnership sales and did that from ninety eight
<v Speaker 3>until twenty twenty three.
<v Speaker 1>So then, how did you get involved in this situation?
<v Speaker 1>How did this come about?
<v Speaker 4>Yeah?
<v Speaker 3>I was looking for something just more mission driven at
<v Speaker 3>the stage in my life to find ways to give
<v Speaker 3>back and do something that I felt personally motivated and
<v Speaker 3>passionate about, and fortunate to come across Positive Athlete. I
<v Speaker 3>had not heard of this organization, to be totally candid,
<v Speaker 3>until November of last year. They were doing amazing things
<v Speaker 3>and really in the state of Georgia and then the
<v Speaker 3>Pittsburgh market. So fortunate to find them at the right
<v Speaker 3>time when they're in the midst of a national expansion
<v Speaker 3>that became in January.
<v Speaker 1>Okay, all right, I'm going to ask the million dollar question.
<v Speaker 1>Tell us exactly what it is that Positive Athlete does.
<v Speaker 3>Sure, we recognize, empower and connect high character high school
<v Speaker 3>student athletes in the most simple form. So it's an
<v Speaker 3>organization that was founded by hinz Ward, the former Steeler
<v Speaker 3>and are now CEO in the Pittsburgh market twelve years ago.
<v Speaker 3>And the whole premise was that there are lots of
<v Speaker 3>great opportunities for foreigns five star athletes as well as
<v Speaker 3>for kids who may have good grades. But instead the
<v Speaker 3>play here was how can we design something that is
<v Speaker 3>really accessible to all because this is based on attitude
<v Speaker 3>and character, which are within your control. So they went
<v Speaker 3>to market with the program accessible to all boys and
<v Speaker 3>girls high school athletes in that market and very very
<v Speaker 3>well received, as you can imagine, and the rest is
<v Speaker 3>kind of history.
<v Speaker 1>Well, I love what you're saying, because, hey, we can't
<v Speaker 1>all be six eight, two hundred and forty pounds and
<v Speaker 1>run like a gazelle, but we can control our effort,
<v Speaker 1>we can control our attitudes. So I really like what
<v Speaker 1>you're talking about here. Maybe it's too early to tell
<v Speaker 1>them what kind of success are you having so far?
<v Speaker 3>It's great, and let me just keep going a little
<v Speaker 3>bit the history and the next year to where we
<v Speaker 3>are in Colorado. But yeah, as you can imagine, the
<v Speaker 3>program was just very well received in that regard. So
<v Speaker 3>from Pittsburgh it really migrated to the state of Georgia.
<v Speaker 3>We've been operating for a decade and eighty percent of
<v Speaker 3>the high schools in Georgia have nominees. We have given
<v Speaker 3>out nearly six hundred thousand dollars in scholarships and see
<v Speaker 3>five to eight thousand nominations a year, so that really
<v Speaker 3>became the model market. And you know we have the
<v Speaker 3>good fortune now to expand into Colorado.
<v Speaker 1>Wow, that is impressive. I love this because, you know,
<v Speaker 1>you and I were talking a little bit before we
<v Speaker 1>started recording. There are so many kids out there that
<v Speaker 1>just need maybe a little boost, just need a little
<v Speaker 1>bit of help. And there are way too many people
<v Speaker 1>that are out there looking to take advantage of kids
<v Speaker 1>not actually give them that boost and give them that
<v Speaker 1>help that they need. So I absolutely love this. Maybe
<v Speaker 1>this is too broad. Up a question kids that are,
<v Speaker 1>you know, involved in athletics, what is the most important
<v Speaker 1>thing for them to kind of keep in mind in
<v Speaker 1>regards to this program. What would you what kind of
<v Speaker 1>advice would you give a kid?
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, well, first off, I got to jump in. We
<v Speaker 2>are free. We are free to the nominator, free.
<v Speaker 3>To the nominated, And I think to your point, there
<v Speaker 3>are a lot of people with different sorts of commercial
<v Speaker 3>models that our credit have found their niche. That's not
<v Speaker 3>what we're about. So it was designed to be a
<v Speaker 3>very easy process where any adult can nominate. So a
<v Speaker 3>lot of teachers, a lot of athletic directors, coaches, nominate,
<v Speaker 3>but parents can even nominate their own kids. It's a
<v Speaker 3>five minute, super easy process. As we talked about any
<v Speaker 3>any sport boys and girls grades nine through twelve. And
<v Speaker 3>if you really want to think about it, from our standpoint,
<v Speaker 3>we look for the kids who overcome obstacles. So is
<v Speaker 3>this an injury, is this a family situation? Those who
<v Speaker 3>give back in their communities, or those who just have
<v Speaker 3>a great attitude. So we don't care if you sit.
<v Speaker 2>On the bench and don't don't play. That works for
<v Speaker 2>us too.
<v Speaker 3>If you're the right you know, high character, attitude and mindset.
<v Speaker 3>That's that's really what we're all about. So a little
<v Speaker 3>bit different in that regard.
<v Speaker 1>To this is absolutely outstanding. I love this. Ready, who
<v Speaker 1>can apply, Any parent, any any coach, teacher, whoever, who
<v Speaker 1>can apply for this?
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, we'll jump into because a lot of programs are
<v Speaker 3>application based led by the student. Ours is nomination based.
<v Speaker 3>So the key thing is it's an adult so eighteen
<v Speaker 3>plus okay to nominate. So and you just you get
<v Speaker 3>our website positiveathlete dot Com. Is a very intuitive process
<v Speaker 3>and that really sets in motion in the process.
<v Speaker 2>I always encourage you to.
<v Speaker 3>Like, don't overthink it, right, there's so many benefits in
<v Speaker 3>it for the student athletes, Like if you're even considering it,
<v Speaker 3>just act on it. It can take as little as
<v Speaker 3>five minutes. And even if you don't have every last
<v Speaker 3>little detail, that's okay because any nominated student gets an
<v Speaker 3>email and a chance to add to their own profile.
<v Speaker 3>And we really look at that total selection when we
<v Speaker 3>get around to our scholarships and also want to jump
<v Speaker 3>in here.
<v Speaker 2>You know, everybody their ears.
<v Speaker 3>Perk and rightfully sell at scholarships, and we're very proud
<v Speaker 3>of our giving legacy. But where we're different too is
<v Speaker 3>celebrating every nominee. So while we do do awards events,
<v Speaker 3>while we do do scholarships and have a very select
<v Speaker 3>competitive you know, through a competitive process numbers of winners there,
<v Speaker 3>every nominee in our program gets free lifelong career, character
<v Speaker 3>and leadership resources, and the data is there to back
<v Speaker 3>it up. So upon if you clan't as you're I
<v Speaker 3>think your words were an average size fish in a
<v Speaker 3>small pond in high school, we're doing things the right way.
<v Speaker 3>I saw there that you have fish in middle school games.
<v Speaker 3>Let's say you're volunteering your time as a coach or
<v Speaker 3>a middle school official like you would have been a
<v Speaker 3>perfect candidate back in the day. And when you get
<v Speaker 3>that email it says, Clent, you've been nominated as a
<v Speaker 3>positive athlete. Ninety seven percent of those kids experience a
<v Speaker 3>boost and confidence, ninety six percent of them are inspired
<v Speaker 3>more to do more of what made them a nominee,
<v Speaker 3>and then four out of five of them report just
<v Speaker 3>being hungry for these sorts of additional resources we provide
<v Speaker 3>on topics. To be candid, just you know, there's not
<v Speaker 3>enough time in the school day to cover in many cases.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, you're right, you know, and I know just from
<v Speaker 1>a standpoint of going to a smaller school, you don't
<v Speaker 1>always have that person that's kind of lobbying on your behalf.
<v Speaker 1>So to have someone like positive Athlete that's going to
<v Speaker 1>go and say, hey, here's some resources that you might
<v Speaker 1>not even be aware of that are going to help you.
<v Speaker 1>I'm telling you you might want to get involved in
<v Speaker 1>this situation. So what about I'm a young athlete, maybe
<v Speaker 1>I don't have that adult in my life. How can
<v Speaker 1>you athletes go about getting involved in any capacity? Do
<v Speaker 1>they go talk to their coach, do they go talk
<v Speaker 1>to you know, a parent, whatever? How do you, how
<v Speaker 1>do they get involved.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, I mean i'd highly recommend, you know, socialized with
<v Speaker 3>a trusted adult or a coach or a teacher in life,
<v Speaker 3>because I think this is also an icebreaker into a conversation.
<v Speaker 3>You know, we'd mentioned earlier. I think the stats we
<v Speaker 3>go off, ninety seven percent of the kids they play
<v Speaker 3>high school sports won't go on to play the next level.
<v Speaker 3>You know, at some point everybody's career is going to
<v Speaker 3>come to an end. You know, for me, it may
<v Speaker 3>have been then to high school for my son at
<v Speaker 3>maybe at thend of college. In a case like Champ Bailey,
<v Speaker 3>who's our lead athlete and well known in this car
<v Speaker 3>out of community from his work on the field with
<v Speaker 3>the Broncos, like his career was done at thirty five
<v Speaker 3>looking for other stuff to do. And if you think
<v Speaker 3>about it, there are so many skills developed during athletics,
<v Speaker 3>whether a teamwork, work ethic, accountability of showing up on time, communication,
<v Speaker 3>what's it mean to represent your school with pride in
<v Speaker 3>a uniform. Those translate to the workforce. That's really are
<v Speaker 3>one of our driving purposes is how you help prepare
<v Speaker 3>athletes for life and if we can, you know, help
<v Speaker 3>raise awareness on those transferable skills, and even beyond that,
<v Speaker 3>how to leverage that in a corporate interview setting. Put
<v Speaker 3>this on your resume. You know, anybody out there who's
<v Speaker 3>got kids who are high school heges, you know they're
<v Speaker 3>all scrapped in for the summer jobs. But whether it's
<v Speaker 3>another scholarship application or a first real job application, put
<v Speaker 3>on there that you're nominated as a positive athlete. And
<v Speaker 3>I all but guarantee you the interview is probably going
<v Speaker 3>to latch onto that one and say tell me more.
<v Speaker 1>Well in that interview process alone is so invaluable for kids.
<v Speaker 1>So many kids don't get that experience. You're gonna have
<v Speaker 1>to do it the rest of your life. You might
<v Speaker 1>as well get a little bit of experience doing it.
<v Speaker 1>I absolutely love this. What about just the typical parent,
<v Speaker 1>the typical fan. There's a lot of people that go
<v Speaker 1>just kind of kind of watch their old school play.
<v Speaker 1>Can those fans go nominate a kid that they see
<v Speaker 1>in their community?
<v Speaker 2>One hundred percent?
<v Speaker 3>I mean their kids out there doing things the right way,
<v Speaker 3>probably going home at night wondering did anybody notice or care?
<v Speaker 3>And here's your chance for that reinforcing pad on the
<v Speaker 3>back and I love this theme of go nominate somebody
<v Speaker 3>from your own high school. Heck, you may not even
<v Speaker 3>know who that is. Pick up the phone, reach out
<v Speaker 3>to your athletic director, a former teacher, a principal, asked,
<v Speaker 3>you know, and say you want to act another great
<v Speaker 3>legend in our community. Jake Plumber had exactly that conversation
<v Speaker 3>with him. So here we have Jake Plumber, Pro Bowl quarterback.
<v Speaker 3>He went he nominated somebody from his little high school
<v Speaker 3>in Idaho. He was actually one of the first ever
<v Speaker 3>nominees from that state. And that's just a great way.
<v Speaker 3>You know, if you have Jake's credentials, great, But Clint,
<v Speaker 3>you you can nominate. There's no limit to how many
<v Speaker 3>you nominate too, So you know, our perfect model is
<v Speaker 3>really you know again, we love parent community engagement, but
<v Speaker 3>for a school athletic director to tell each of your
<v Speaker 3>coaches just nominate one kid. You know, if you want
<v Speaker 3>to do more, great, But it takes five minutes. You
<v Speaker 3>have all school year to do it.
<v Speaker 2>So why wouldn't you do this?
<v Speaker 3>I mean another another party vocabulary. I think this is
<v Speaker 3>like common sense perspective. Well, this is common sense way
<v Speaker 3>to pay it forward and make our community stronger and better.
<v Speaker 1>You're absolutely right, and I just love what you're doing.
<v Speaker 1>And it's funny because you know, you'd you'd reach out
<v Speaker 1>on an email and I kind of look at what
<v Speaker 1>you're doing and I was like, this sounds too good
<v Speaker 1>to be true. I got to check this out for myself.
<v Speaker 1>But my goodness, you're you're focusing on the exact things
<v Speaker 1>that we taught as coaches, and so many of these
<v Speaker 1>life lessons that you do get from athletics, so many
<v Speaker 1>of these things that you're going to carry for the
<v Speaker 1>rest of your life. There are so many of us.
<v Speaker 1>I know I do. I still rely on things I
<v Speaker 1>was taught as a kid playing athletics, And I know
<v Speaker 1>sometimes athletic gets a bad rap. We know there's good
<v Speaker 1>and bad and everything, but some of those skills, some
<v Speaker 1>of those you know, character things you learned, they stick
<v Speaker 1>with you for the rest of your life. And to
<v Speaker 1>get an opportunity like this and to have a group
<v Speaker 1>by positive athletes, it's going to back you and help
<v Speaker 1>you and give you some resources. Like you said, why
<v Speaker 1>wouldn't you do this? This is absolutely phenomenal. Okay, what
<v Speaker 1>is the best way for someone to nominate? What is
<v Speaker 1>the quickest way is is that you know, go to
<v Speaker 1>a website. What's the quickest way to do this for
<v Speaker 1>someone to get involved?
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, I just say go to a positive Athlete on
<v Speaker 3>dot org. It's a very intuitive website.
<v Speaker 2>You go to nominate.
<v Speaker 3>We'll formally open for nominations again with the school year
<v Speaker 3>cycle September ninth. If you were to go today, depending
<v Speaker 3>on when you're actually listening to this podcast. Worst case,
<v Speaker 3>if you're catching us and we aren't live during the
<v Speaker 3>school year, there's a prenominate thing and that would trigger
<v Speaker 3>an automatic reminder. So I would say, well, it's top
<v Speaker 3>of mind, just go in there and do it. And
<v Speaker 3>then from there you need to click on regions Colado
<v Speaker 3>and a Surprise or in the Mountain region you get
<v Speaker 3>to Carado every day. We're trying to enhance our website.
<v Speaker 3>You know, we've grown quickly, right from two people into
<v Speaker 3>two states. So very soon here we should have information
<v Speaker 3>on our fourteen student athletes who awarded last year, two
<v Speaker 3>coaches and athletic director and they are just amazing stories
<v Speaker 3>and who knows, maybe on a future episode we can
<v Speaker 3>actually have some of our award winners on the show.
<v Speaker 3>Because I think that'd be really uplifting for everybody to
<v Speaker 3>see the future of what we have in this community.
<v Speaker 3>But Colorado has just been tremendous. So to give you
<v Speaker 3>a little perspective, when we expanded nationally, we have a
<v Speaker 3>staff presence in seven different states. The goal was to
<v Speaker 3>get to twenty percent of high schools with nominees. Any
<v Speaker 3>guesses where we ended up in Colorado.
<v Speaker 1>I would imagine you were pretty strong in Colorado, but
<v Speaker 1>I'm guessing.
<v Speaker 3>Fifty three percent of high school in just three months.
<v Speaker 3>So that is the highest percentage of any state in
<v Speaker 3>the country other than Georgia, where they had.
<v Speaker 1>A decade head.
<v Speaker 3>We all said nominees covering all twenty seven chassis states
<v Speaker 3>sanctioned sports, as well as many in independent sports. Because
<v Speaker 3>you know, while we love the school sports landscape, if
<v Speaker 3>you are pursuing a sport independently, you're eligible too, And
<v Speaker 3>just knowing the different adventure and non traditional makeup of Coroado,
<v Speaker 3>we love to celebrate as many different sports as possible.
<v Speaker 2>An aspect we've not yet.
<v Speaker 3>Had the chance to get into is positive Athlete also
<v Speaker 3>has strategic alliances with many national governing bodies of sport.
<v Speaker 3>So think USA wrestling, USA Swimming, even USA Team handball,
<v Speaker 3>USA archery, and I'll posit archery because I think we
<v Speaker 3>had over thirty nominees archers high school archers from the
<v Speaker 3>state of Colorado, and I gotta tell you, there's some
<v Speaker 3>amazing stories in there. So it's really a fun way
<v Speaker 3>for these other sports to frankly source some stories they
<v Speaker 3>may not even be aware of from their own membership.
<v Speaker 3>So in that regard, it really is just a great
<v Speaker 3>aggregator of good news around sports.
<v Speaker 1>This is absolutely incredible. I absolutely love what you guys
<v Speaker 1>are doing.
<v Speaker 4>I really do.
<v Speaker 1>And I told you before to get involved in a
<v Speaker 1>situation with someone that is actually trying to help kids,
<v Speaker 1>trying to find good situations, and hey, it's not a
<v Speaker 1>matter of we're just going to give you a bunch
<v Speaker 1>of pre so that's not what it is about. You're
<v Speaker 1>gonna earn it. You're gonna have to be the right
<v Speaker 1>kind of kid. And I love that you're rewarding character,
<v Speaker 1>You're rewarding hard work, You're rewarding those attributes that so
<v Speaker 1>many times they get overlooked, and that is the best
<v Speaker 1>part about this. But you're rewarding them with what could
<v Speaker 1>be something really really big, so I'm excited about that.
<v Speaker 1>You mentioned a little bit about about coaches or administrators.
<v Speaker 1>Did you say something about they could be nominated as well?
<v Speaker 3>Correct, Yeah, I always. I mean I start with student athletes. Sure,
<v Speaker 3>they're the focus of what we do. They are who
<v Speaker 3>the scholarships will go to. But we do Our system
<v Speaker 3>does also allow you to nominate a coach or an
<v Speaker 3>athletic director, so we had phenomenal things. So j Peltier
<v Speaker 3>is a track coach from Summit High School up in
<v Speaker 3>the Breckenridge area, more than double participation in this program
<v Speaker 3>and did some really cool things to welcome, at least
<v Speaker 3>in particular one special needs athletes. So he was one
<v Speaker 3>of our coach nominees, as well as Ray Lopez Lincoln
<v Speaker 3>High School who returned to those alma mater and did
<v Speaker 3>some great things there on the ad side in this
<v Speaker 3>I think speaks to we try to reach to every
<v Speaker 3>corner of the state. We're really proud to get into
<v Speaker 3>a lot of the remote small town So. Roxanne Cerna
<v Speaker 3>is the athletic director at Centennial High School in the
<v Speaker 3>San Luis.
<v Speaker 2>Valley, one of the.
<v Speaker 3>Most funding challenge districts in the state. She is able
<v Speaker 3>to secure new uniforms for all of her sports teams
<v Speaker 3>and new new baseball dugout. So those are the sorts
<v Speaker 3>of things that we looked to highlight. I touched earlier
<v Speaker 3>on Champ Bailey being involved. He was very very hands
<v Speaker 3>on personally for the wards event we did in June.
<v Speaker 3>So each of those individuals I mentioned, as well as
<v Speaker 3>our student athlete winners personally, we're on stage dialogue being
<v Speaker 3>interfacing with Champ.
<v Speaker 1>This is outstanding. I absolutely love it, Brady. I want
<v Speaker 1>to thank you so much for taking the time, and
<v Speaker 1>I do want to want to say, hey, you've got
<v Speaker 1>an open invite anytime you want to come back on.
<v Speaker 1>We'll be in contact. We'll be in touch. But I
<v Speaker 1>really love what you're doing here. We're going to get
<v Speaker 1>this out to as many people as we possibly can. Hey,
<v Speaker 1>if you're listening, you owe it to whoever you know
<v Speaker 1>you're kind of supporting. Go to that go to the school,
<v Speaker 1>go to your back to your old school, go check
<v Speaker 1>it out. You know that kid that's working hard and
<v Speaker 1>maybe not getting recognized, get them on this list. And again,
<v Speaker 1>even if they don't finish at the top, they're gonna
<v Speaker 1>get some reinforcement. They're gonna get some support and they're
<v Speaker 1>gonna get some motivation and some confidence to keep it going. Brady,
<v Speaker 1>I want to thank you so much. Looking forward to
<v Speaker 1>working not just you know if you personally with positive
<v Speaker 1>athlete and gen. I think this is a phenomenal cause
<v Speaker 1>and I think it's something people should really really get behind.
<v Speaker 1>I really love what you're doing here. But thank you
<v Speaker 1>so much. We would love to have you back anytime.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, no, I appreciate it. Thanks, Thank Quinn. Thanks for
<v Speaker 3>helping U spread our message and my message. Just don't delay. Right,
<v Speaker 3>we all have things on our list and we don't
<v Speaker 3>get to it. It's five minutes. It's easy. Who knows
<v Speaker 3>you could change.
<v Speaker 2>A kid's course for life exactly.
<v Speaker 3>Allow us to say, there are a lot of programs
<v Speaker 3>out there, but there's a reason why CHASSA, the CAR Too,
<v Speaker 3>High School Coaches Association, all those people. This is why
<v Speaker 3>you got into coaching. You're right, CARTT Athletic Trainers Association.
<v Speaker 3>From a mental health standpoint, car Rural Schools Alliance, most
<v Speaker 3>recently the NI TRIPLEA that is basically the governing body
<v Speaker 3>of high school athletic directors. There's a reason all these
<v Speaker 3>people are excited about our program, so encourage everybody to
<v Speaker 3>act on it.
<v Speaker 1>Okay, I hope you enjoyed that interview with Brady Kellogg
<v Speaker 1>on Behalf of Positive Athlete. And you know, one small
<v Speaker 1>note we do need to make is that it doesn't
<v Speaker 1>matter where you are. You know, he's talking about being
<v Speaker 1>in Colorado, being in Georgia, being in Pennsylvania. Anyone in
<v Speaker 1>the nation can go nominate, and you can go nominate
<v Speaker 1>a kid from a different state. They don't have to
<v Speaker 1>be in Colorado. It could be a California kid, it
<v Speaker 1>could be a Texas kid. If you've got that special
<v Speaker 1>kid going out and doing the right things on and
<v Speaker 1>off the playing surface, go nominate him. Don't say you no,
<v Speaker 1>go get involved. Go get that nomination in. But right
<v Speaker 1>now we are going to begin our twenty twenty five
<v Speaker 1>twenty twenty six college football preview. I can't wait for
<v Speaker 1>college football. Let's get to it right now. Joining us
<v Speaker 1>right now on the Daily does a longtime friend of
<v Speaker 1>the show. In fact, we're just talking about this for
<v Speaker 1>a started recording. I think this might be like our seventh,
<v Speaker 1>eight ninth year doing this college football preview with this
<v Speaker 1>special guest. But we've got West Virginia Mountaineer and acting
<v Speaker 1>president of the Dalla does I team that investigates the
<v Speaker 1>big stories and gets the information no one else can get.
<v Speaker 1>Big Rob is here to help us preview that twenty
<v Speaker 1>twenty five college football season. I am hoping, after a
<v Speaker 1>season of trial and major error, that we're gonna get
<v Speaker 1>it right this year. But Rob, welcome back. We always
<v Speaker 1>enjoy your visits to the desk.
<v Speaker 4>Yes, it's good to be back.
<v Speaker 5>This is how I know football is finally here when
<v Speaker 5>we do the exact preview.
<v Speaker 4>So I'm ready.
<v Speaker 1>I am too. I you know what, It's so funny
<v Speaker 1>because from like the Super Bowl until like now, I'm
<v Speaker 1>just like, and hey, I love love college who the NBA.
<v Speaker 1>There is a place for baseball. There's something, but it's
<v Speaker 1>just not the same as football season. And you know
<v Speaker 1>we're talking about it a little bit before, Rob, I'm
<v Speaker 1>looking at college football season. It's wide open, isn't it.
<v Speaker 5>It really is, like I said, I know, we'll get
<v Speaker 5>into it here in a bit, but I can talk
<v Speaker 5>myself into probably seven eighteens, and I can talk myself
<v Speaker 5>right back out of those same teams.
<v Speaker 4>So there's there's no clear cut favorite.
<v Speaker 5>You know, past couple seasons, there's usually like two or
<v Speaker 5>three teams I feel pretty good about.
<v Speaker 4>But yeah, this year it's it's it's pretty open.
<v Speaker 1>I don't know, I'm looking at it like twelve fifteen teams.
<v Speaker 1>Maybe I have no idea, rob They have tweaked that
<v Speaker 1>twelve team college football playoffs this year. The college Football
<v Speaker 1>Playoff will feature a twelve team format again in twenty
<v Speaker 1>twenty five. We saw that last year. However, we're just
<v Speaker 1>gonna have a straight seeding model for the playoff field.
<v Speaker 1>That means the top four teams in the final Selection
<v Speaker 1>Committee rankings we'll get those first round bys. We won't
<v Speaker 1>jug them around based on conference championships or any of
<v Speaker 1>that nonsense. Last year, you'll remember, the top four conference
<v Speaker 1>champions got the buys. But this is better. Right, last
<v Speaker 1>year we had a mess. We didn't have one single
<v Speaker 1>one through four seed even get past the second round.
<v Speaker 1>We ended up with a final four of A five,
<v Speaker 1>A six, A seven, and eight. It just tells me
<v Speaker 1>the format was probably flawed, and I'm hoping that this
<v Speaker 1>format is going to bring us better results.
<v Speaker 4>Yeah, I think it makes more sense.
<v Speaker 5>Like I said, the top four, but I think we'll
<v Speaker 5>still probably get that controversy that always comes because you'll
<v Speaker 5>have like a two lost Clemson and a two lost Bama,
<v Speaker 5>and so you're trying to figure out, you know which one.
<v Speaker 5>But I think they kept they did keep the automatic
<v Speaker 5>bids for the top four, and well, top five get
<v Speaker 5>the automatic bid, so I think that's what's most important.
<v Speaker 5>If you win your conference, you get an automatic bid.
<v Speaker 5>So I'm glad they kept that part. And the seating
<v Speaker 5>should make it.
<v Speaker 1>Easier, yes, because last year you could see the seedings
<v Speaker 1>were so off, and then the playoff came and we
<v Speaker 1>were like, this doesn't feel right, this all feels off,
<v Speaker 1>and then sure enough we were right. It was off.
<v Speaker 1>It was dumb, it was just poorly planned. I think
<v Speaker 1>they maybe had the right intentions, it was partly executed.
<v Speaker 1>But today, Rob, we're gonna jump in. We're gonna look
<v Speaker 1>at the big conferences. We're gonna take a look at
<v Speaker 1>the contenders. We're gonna take a look at the teams
<v Speaker 1>that we think are going to win these conference championships
<v Speaker 1>and play their way into the playoff, and we might
<v Speaker 1>have to take a look at, you know, who's going
<v Speaker 1>to win the Heisman and who's going to make that
<v Speaker 1>twelve team playoff. And I'm telling you from my own standpoint,
<v Speaker 1>I am like burning through the paper or erasing my awful,
<v Speaker 1>stupid preview because I'm like, uh, like you said, I'm
<v Speaker 1>talking myself in, I'm talking myself back out. I look
<v Speaker 1>at the schedule. Oh, this doesn't even make sense. All right, Rob,
<v Speaker 1>It's gonna be tough, but we're gonna do it. We're
<v Speaker 1>gonna get through this eventually. And you know, it's funny
<v Speaker 1>because every year we've been doing this, like I said,
<v Speaker 1>probably gosh, I don't know, it's probably eight or nine
<v Speaker 1>years we've been doing this now, and every year we
<v Speaker 1>don't talk about who we picked. We kind of keep that,
<v Speaker 1>keep that secret. We kind of go, Okay, we're not
<v Speaker 1>gonna talk about it, and then we come back to it. Basically,
<v Speaker 1>we end up with really really similar picks. And I
<v Speaker 1>know you're listening and you're thinking, oh, no, I can
<v Speaker 1>tell they don't plan ahead of time. Shut up, keep
<v Speaker 1>those opinions to yourself. But we do usually end up
<v Speaker 1>on a very similar page at the very end. We'll
<v Speaker 1>see if it happens again this year, Rob, We're gonna
<v Speaker 1>start off in that Atlantic Coast Conference that one last
<v Speaker 1>year by the Clemson Tigers, and then they sim Mustangs
<v Speaker 1>actually also kind of squeaked into the College Football Paoff
<v Speaker 1>as well. Let's take a look right now at what
<v Speaker 1>the ACC is going to look like this year, Rob,
<v Speaker 1>How many contenders do you have? And then we'll get
<v Speaker 1>to your champion. How many catenders do you have in
<v Speaker 1>the AEC.
<v Speaker 4>Well, I broke it down a little bit different this year.
<v Speaker 5>So I've got two contenders for you, and then I
<v Speaker 5>got three teams that just kind of honorable mentions.
<v Speaker 4>I just wanted to kind of throw out.
<v Speaker 1>There, give me an honorable mention? What do you got
<v Speaker 1>for an honorable mention?
<v Speaker 4>My first one is going to be Georgia Tech. Yeah.
<v Speaker 1>I kind of like them.
<v Speaker 5>Yeah, So back to back winning seasons and they're past
<v Speaker 5>couple of seasons they've usually been good for like an
<v Speaker 5>upset or two. Again, I don't think they have enough
<v Speaker 5>to win it, but the offensive be good this year
<v Speaker 5>with King and Haines back on yea with both King
<v Speaker 5>and Haynes back, So I think this is a good team. Again,
<v Speaker 5>a couple upsets, not enough to win the conference, but
<v Speaker 5>you know, I like them.
<v Speaker 1>I do too, and I would agree. And I kind
<v Speaker 1>of have them in the back of my mind as well,
<v Speaker 1>because I look at them and go, they're kind of
<v Speaker 1>getting some continuity. We saw them last year pull off
<v Speaker 1>a couple of upsets that we didn't see. I like that,
<v Speaker 1>Georgia tech pic. I'm gonna throw out a team, and
<v Speaker 1>it may be one of the ones that you wanted
<v Speaker 1>to mention. I don't think they're gonna be a contender.
<v Speaker 1>I don't even think they're gonna be good, but I
<v Speaker 1>do want to mention the North Carolina tar Heels, who
<v Speaker 1>now have Bill Belichick and his twenty two year old
<v Speaker 1>wife apparently coaching them. You know, UNC is gonna get
<v Speaker 1>a ton of hype. You've got Belichick, You've got his
<v Speaker 1>wife possibly calling plays. I'm not really sure. But here's
<v Speaker 1>the weird part. That early schedule is really soft. If
<v Speaker 1>they just don't trip over their own feet, they're gonna
<v Speaker 1>get a few wins, and they might get a top
<v Speaker 1>twenty five ranking, and then they will crash and burn
<v Speaker 1>hard and it will get really, really ugly. So I'm
<v Speaker 1>gonna throw out you and see as a not a contender,
<v Speaker 1>if that makes any sense. Rob what else you got.
<v Speaker 5>The next one I got for you is Florida State. Yeah,
<v Speaker 5>they've revamped the roster. I think they'll be better at quarterback.
<v Speaker 5>Thomas Costiganos, I believe. Yeah, from NC State came in.
<v Speaker 5>Gus Malsan is the OC now novel on the hot seat.
<v Speaker 5>So I liked him initially when I first looked at it.
<v Speaker 5>Then I looked at the schedule, and you know, I
<v Speaker 5>got nervous again. But yeah, so I've seen, like I said,
<v Speaker 5>better play. You might see some you know, up and down.
<v Speaker 5>Obviously a lot better than last season. Jeff just kind
<v Speaker 5>of wanted to throw them out there.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, I would throw them out there as well. And Norvel,
<v Speaker 1>like you said, he is on a bit of a
<v Speaker 1>hot seat. It's all fun and games when you you know,
<v Speaker 1>only win two three games. But now if he come
<v Speaker 1>back to back and you have another tough year, he's
<v Speaker 1>gonna be in some trouble real real quick. I'm gonna
<v Speaker 1>throw out a team and I'm gonna make him a
<v Speaker 1>little bit of a contender. Although if I'm being honest,
<v Speaker 1>I don't think they can win it. But I like
<v Speaker 1>this team. I like the Louisville Cardinals. I think with
<v Speaker 1>UFC transfer quarterback Miller Moss. They're gonna go out and
<v Speaker 1>they're gonna put out some offense. Head coach Jeff Brohm,
<v Speaker 1>he can coach offense. I just worry that Louisville's defense
<v Speaker 1>is going to let them down. And the further they
<v Speaker 1>get into the schedule, we're gonna see them lose some
<v Speaker 1>high scoring games. Fun to watch, probably entertaining to watch.
<v Speaker 1>I like Louisville, I just only like them as a friend.
<v Speaker 1>I don't love Louisville. Rob who also got an ACC.
<v Speaker 4>Yep. Next one I got for you is SMU. You
<v Speaker 4>already mentioned them. I think they'll be a little bit better.
<v Speaker 5>They tried to get bigger in the portal, which I
<v Speaker 5>think cost them down the line.
<v Speaker 4>This is another one there.
<v Speaker 5>We've got a tough schedule here, but I think building
<v Speaker 5>off of last year, they tried to address, you know,
<v Speaker 5>their concerns that kind of cost him at the end
<v Speaker 5>of the season.
<v Speaker 4>So I like them in the mix too.
<v Speaker 1>As a contender, I do too, And you know in
<v Speaker 1>that ACC SMU is going to be able to hang.
<v Speaker 1>They've got some speed at some skill positions. They're going
<v Speaker 1>to be at least again another team that's going to
<v Speaker 1>be entertaining to watch. All right. So now we're down
<v Speaker 1>to actual contenders. I've got one, one other contender and
<v Speaker 1>a champion. What's your first contender up that you.
<v Speaker 5>Got that's the same We probably have the same too.
<v Speaker 5>I got a last contender and the champion contender Miami.
<v Speaker 1>Yep, and I got the same contender.
<v Speaker 4>Yeah.
<v Speaker 1>You know Mario Cristobal. He's done a pretty good job.
<v Speaker 1>And when he first got they were kind of looking
<v Speaker 1>at it, going, are you really gonna get this go?
<v Speaker 4>I don't know.
<v Speaker 1>He kind of is changing that roster. Now they get
<v Speaker 1>former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck. I would think their running
<v Speaker 1>game should be improved. I don't know how much I
<v Speaker 1>believe in Beck, but I mean, Miami is not only
<v Speaker 1>a contender for that acc They're a contender for the playoff,
<v Speaker 1>aren't they.
<v Speaker 4>Yeah?
<v Speaker 5>I agree, Like I said, Carson Beck maybe a slight
<v Speaker 5>step down for Cam Woreon.
<v Speaker 4>But to what I like the most.
<v Speaker 5>They brought in Corey Heatherman from Minnesota to run that defense,
<v Speaker 5>which cost him down the season. Minnesota had a good
<v Speaker 5>defense last year, so I think if that defense improves,
<v Speaker 5>you get enough from Beck that they're right there in
<v Speaker 5>the mix.
<v Speaker 1>If your offensive line can protect Beck. I think Beck
<v Speaker 1>is the kind of kid that can can do some
<v Speaker 1>damage if he's under pressure. We saw last year he
<v Speaker 1>really struggles. Having said all that, we Booth got Miami
<v Speaker 1>as a contender. I'm assuming we both got that same champion.
<v Speaker 4>Rob.
<v Speaker 1>They're just pretty loaded, aren't they. Who's your champ?
<v Speaker 4>It's Clemson loaded.
<v Speaker 5>And the biggest thing for me that but finally got
<v Speaker 5>into portal, didn't you know, kind of dip his toe in,
<v Speaker 5>pulled up. But they got three out of there that
<v Speaker 5>I think can compete right away. That will help Kate
<v Speaker 5>club Nick back another season more experience. So yeah, I
<v Speaker 5>like them to to win the ACC.
<v Speaker 1>Well, and that defense was pretty good last year. They
<v Speaker 1>might be better this year. And then, you know, it's
<v Speaker 1>funny because we kind of talked about the schedule. You
<v Speaker 1>look at these teams, you're like, oh, they got this.
<v Speaker 1>I'm looking at that schedule. Hey, that schedule is not bad. Yes,
<v Speaker 1>you open it home with LSU, that's tough. After that,
<v Speaker 1>they're probably going to be favored in every single game
<v Speaker 1>the rest of their year until they get to you know,
<v Speaker 1>maybe the a SEC title game. Or the College Football
<v Speaker 1>PLAYFF Clemson should roll Kate Club. Nick started to kind
<v Speaker 1>of figure it out last year, and I feel like Clemson,
<v Speaker 1>they're gonna be a big dog and with that schedule,
<v Speaker 1>that might put him in a really, really favorable position
<v Speaker 1>in the playoffs. Right, So we both got Miami contender,
<v Speaker 1>Clemson champion, and I don't know, I just can't see
<v Speaker 1>anybody else coming out of that conference other than teams
<v Speaker 1>we talked about. Let's move forward, let's go next to
<v Speaker 1>the Big twelve. That was one last year by Arizona State.
<v Speaker 1>They went all the way to the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. Hey,
<v Speaker 1>they gave Texas all they wanted in that game, came
<v Speaker 1>up a little bit short in the end. Arizona State's
<v Speaker 1>gonna be tough again this year? Can they be that
<v Speaker 1>good again? Because they lost one very key component? Rob
<v Speaker 1>What do you got in that Big twelve? What kind
<v Speaker 1>of teams do you have in the Big twelve?
<v Speaker 5>Same breakdown? I got three mentions, I got two real contenders.
<v Speaker 5>And then my camp first mentioned I'm gonna throw out
<v Speaker 5>is gonna be a Baylor?
<v Speaker 1>Yeah?
<v Speaker 5>Eighteen returning starters. They're solid on both sides of the ball.
<v Speaker 5>I'm a little concerned though. Last year they started off slow,
<v Speaker 5>they kind of picked it up at the second half
<v Speaker 5>of the season. So this is one of those that
<v Speaker 5>could fall apart. Like I'm not real sure about the coach.
<v Speaker 5>So again, if they start slow or you know, lose
<v Speaker 5>a bad one early, this could fall off the rails.
<v Speaker 5>But good on both sides of the ball. And in
<v Speaker 5>this conference, you know, I think they'll be right in
<v Speaker 5>the mix.
<v Speaker 1>Well, and Baylor is one of those teams that, yeah,
<v Speaker 1>I think could be right in the mix. And is
<v Speaker 1>David Ranto coaching for his job, because it sure feels
<v Speaker 1>like he is. He's on a bit of a hot
<v Speaker 1>seat too. He's got to come out and be a
<v Speaker 1>little bit better than they have been as of recently.
<v Speaker 1>All Right, give me one more of those teams that
<v Speaker 1>he kind of like you, sort of like see you.
<v Speaker 4>Okay, I think they're still gonna be good.
<v Speaker 5>Talent still recruiting through the portal schedule is a lot tougher.
<v Speaker 5>I think the Travis Hunter loss is, you know, probably
<v Speaker 5>too much to feel the quarterbacks in there. They might
<v Speaker 5>be okay at quarterback, but I think that Travis Hunter loss,
<v Speaker 5>like I said, it's gonna be too much, So I think,
<v Speaker 5>you know, might make a little noise.
<v Speaker 4>So yeah, I think you know we're worth a mention.
<v Speaker 1>Okay, we'll mention Colorado. You know, I think Travis Hunter
<v Speaker 1>hid a lot of flaws that Colorado had even last year,
<v Speaker 1>just because of how good he was. There were times
<v Speaker 1>he went and got balls that he probably had no
<v Speaker 1>business getting. There were times that he shut down one
<v Speaker 1>side of the field and allowed that defense to look
<v Speaker 1>better than they even were. I think you're right. I
<v Speaker 1>think Travis Hunter is going to be sorely missed. And
<v Speaker 1>again I always go back to the same thing with Colorado.
<v Speaker 1>The way they are building, I worry about depth, and
<v Speaker 1>I worry about them at the point of attack, at
<v Speaker 1>the line of commuch on both sides of the ball.
<v Speaker 1>If they can show those things up, yeah, they're gonna
<v Speaker 1>make a little bit of noise. If they can't, it's
<v Speaker 1>gonna be a little tough season because, like he said,
<v Speaker 1>that schedule is gonna ramp up a little bit. It's
<v Speaker 1>gonna be pretty tough. All Right, You've got one more team.
<v Speaker 1>I'm gonna throw out my same thing. I don't know
<v Speaker 1>that they're a kid tender, but I'm gonna lob them
<v Speaker 1>out there. I think the Utah Utes are gonna be tough.
<v Speaker 1>I actually think head coach Kyle Waitingham he might be
<v Speaker 1>thinking about retirement. And remember last year the Utes went
<v Speaker 1>one in five in one score games. That's not gonna
<v Speaker 1>happen again. Those things usually even out. I doubt that
<v Speaker 1>happens again. They were, you know, kind of trying to
<v Speaker 1>figure out who's our quarterback, Uncle Rico the other guy.
<v Speaker 1>They weren't really sure. Hey, they return eleven starters from
<v Speaker 1>a team that will be very hungry after struggling last year.
<v Speaker 1>I think Utah is dangerous. I don't know that they're
<v Speaker 1>a contender. I think they could be dangerous. So i'll
<v Speaker 1>throw out Utah. What's your last other team?
<v Speaker 4>Yeah? I agree, I actually had Utah as a contender.
<v Speaker 5>And one thing I'll mention Devin dan Piers coming over
<v Speaker 5>from New Mexico along with that offensive coordinator.
<v Speaker 4>So Utah, you know the defense is going to be good.
<v Speaker 5>It's like I said, if that offense, you know, kind
<v Speaker 5>of figures it out, that makes sense. And then I'll
<v Speaker 5>give you my last mention was before Utah was Texas Tech. Yeah,
<v Speaker 5>it might be like a year or two early. Obviously,
<v Speaker 5>they're spending money like crazy, so that's going to pay
<v Speaker 5>off eventually. I said, I think we might be a
<v Speaker 5>little bit too early for that, But like I said,
<v Speaker 5>just the way they're spending, they have the talent, so
<v Speaker 5>there is a scenario where they could roll. Like I said,
<v Speaker 5>I think we might be a season two early on them,
<v Speaker 5>But like I said, just the way they're spending, you know,
<v Speaker 5>they should be in the mix staft this year next
<v Speaker 5>year for sure.
<v Speaker 1>Yes, they're spending big money and they start the season
<v Speaker 1>off with a little bit of it's a manageable schedule.
<v Speaker 1>You could get a few wins and if you could
<v Speaker 1>maybe steal one or two maybe so you get yourself,
<v Speaker 1>you know, ranking, maybe you get a little bit of attention. Yeah,
<v Speaker 1>I like that Texas Tech pic as well. They are
<v Speaker 1>spending crazy amounts of money down there, so they better
<v Speaker 1>get something out of it. Okay, then I'm interested to
<v Speaker 1>see who is your last contender, because I we probably
<v Speaker 1>have the same teams are very close.
<v Speaker 5>Yeah, my last contender is Arizona States.
<v Speaker 1>Okay, Okay, we're gonna swap these exactly then, because I've
<v Speaker 1>I've got my last I've got them as my champion,
<v Speaker 1>the Arizona State. They're gonna be tough again. They're gonna
<v Speaker 1>be really, really good. And that crazy coach Kenny Dillingham.
<v Speaker 1>He's bringing back sixteen starters. And I know they lost
<v Speaker 1>Cam Scattaboy. What's gonna be interesting to see do they
<v Speaker 1>have enough with quarterbacks Sam Levitt to overcome that loss.
<v Speaker 1>That's a big loss. Skattaboo did everything for them at receiving, running, blocking,
<v Speaker 1>He did all. He was kind of the heart and
<v Speaker 1>soul of that team. I'm gonna take the Sun Devils
<v Speaker 1>to repeat, but it wouldn't shock me because I bet
<v Speaker 1>we have the same other team, my contender. You're a
<v Speaker 1>champion probably team in Manhattan, isn't it.
<v Speaker 5>Kansas State Yep, yep. And yeah, I went back and
<v Speaker 5>forth on these two. Like I said, I think just
<v Speaker 5>I'm gonna give the nod to the coach, Chris Climbing yep.
<v Speaker 5>Avery Johnson's back offense is good. The problems were on
<v Speaker 5>the secondary and they tried to address that in the portal.
<v Speaker 5>So yeah, just between the two, I like Climbing just
<v Speaker 5>a little bit better, So a slight Nutch And yeah,
<v Speaker 5>Kansas State as much.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, I did the same thing, and I went back
<v Speaker 1>and forth on this. I had it one way and
<v Speaker 1>ended up switching into last second. Well, and I mean,
<v Speaker 1>you think about that Kansas State squad. They go nine
<v Speaker 1>to four last year, they win their bowl game, and
<v Speaker 1>Climbing goes out and he teaches his offensive and defensive
<v Speaker 1>ones how to be tough right up front, be tough
<v Speaker 1>in the trenches. Kansas State is going to be an
<v Speaker 1>absolute load. Okay, so Rob takes Kansas State, I've got
<v Speaker 1>Arizona State. I know, I know. It's kind of like
<v Speaker 1>when you were a little kid. You're watching your favorite
<v Speaker 1>show and you realize, hey, there's only like five minutes left.
<v Speaker 1>Timmy is still as the Well, they're never gonna find
<v Speaker 1>him in time. Well, don't you worry. We are going
<v Speaker 1>to finish up our college football preview with Big Rob
<v Speaker 1>next week, So make sure you come back because next
<v Speaker 1>week we will get to all of our confidence previews,
<v Speaker 1>we will get to our picks for the Heisman Trophy,
<v Speaker 1>and yes, we will get to our predictions for who
<v Speaker 1>will be going to the college football Playoff this coming January.
<v Speaker 1>So be sure you check out the dose again next week,
<v Speaker 1>and be sure you let a friend know to listen
<v Speaker 1>as well. Hey, I want to say thank you so
<v Speaker 1>much to Brady Kellogg from Positive Athlete for stopping by
<v Speaker 1>the Dose. I really love what Positive Athlete is doing.
<v Speaker 1>I want to give it. Thank you to Big Rob
<v Speaker 1>for kicking off our college football preview. And I want
<v Speaker 1>to say thank you to each and every one of

<v Speaker 1>do that. I'd say thank you to JSP. Could not
<v Speaker 1>do any of this about you. I will see you
<v Speaker 1>on next Wednesday. Have a great week, everybody,
