<v Speaker 1>Wednesday, September twenty four, twenty twenty five, You are listening
<v Speaker 1>to the Daily Dose Sports podcast and I am your host,
<v Speaker 1>Clinton Daily, coming to you from the MIHI City here
<v Speaker 1>in Denver, Colorado, and we are back for another week
<v Speaker 1>of talking sports with a dose of common sense. Hey,
<v Speaker 1>Happy Wednesday to you. Hope you had a good weekend.
<v Speaker 1>Hope your week is going well and that you, your family,
<v Speaker 1>your friends, you're all staying strong and you're all staying
<v Speaker 1>healthy right now. And honestly, is there a better time
<v Speaker 1>of year sports wide than right now? Because if there is,
<v Speaker 1>I don't know what it is. It is now officially
<v Speaker 1>the season of autumn. We have college football going, we
<v Speaker 1>have the NFL going, we have Major League Baseball which
<v Speaker 1>is really starting to heat up because don't look down,
<v Speaker 1>but those wildcard games are literally just one week away,
<v Speaker 1>and we have teams trying to play their way in,
<v Speaker 1>and we have teams trying to play their way out.
<v Speaker 1>Those wildcard games are already coming next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
<v Speaker 1>And I'll be honest, this season is not going as
<v Speaker 1>expected because going into the season, it was expected by
<v Speaker 1>most of the experts. Hey, we're gonna see Yankees versus Dodgers. Right, well,
<v Speaker 1>that hasn't happened exactly. Don't get me wrong. They're both
<v Speaker 1>still in the hunt, but it hasn't been as easy
<v Speaker 1>as expected. Over the American League, it is the Toronto
<v Speaker 1>Blue Jays that became the first American League team to
<v Speaker 1>clinch a playoff spot, with Black Guerrero and George Springer
<v Speaker 1>leading the way. We have those Seattle Mariners with Kyl Rawley,
<v Speaker 1>big dumper, just playing red hot down the stretch. But
<v Speaker 1>what is crazy is that for as good as the
<v Speaker 1>Mariners have been playing, they can't seem to fully pull
<v Speaker 1>away from those pesky Houston Astros. And yes, we may
<v Speaker 1>all hate them, but are going to keep hanging in there,
<v Speaker 1>although they may need to get healthy if they're really
<v Speaker 1>going to make the postseason, because it's gonna be tight.
<v Speaker 1>Speaking up the New York Yankees, they are still in
<v Speaker 1>the hunt. Aaron Judge, He's probably gonna go win that
<v Speaker 1>American League MVP. The Cleveland Guardians might be the hottest
<v Speaker 1>team in the AL right now, but can they carry
<v Speaker 1>that into the postseason because we have seen hot teams
<v Speaker 1>in the regular season not be able to sustain that
<v Speaker 1>when they reach the playoffs. And by the way, the
<v Speaker 1>Guardians are still chasing the American Central leading Detroit Tigers.
<v Speaker 1>But the Tigers they're kind of struggling a little bit
<v Speaker 1>with their pitching rotation. Yes, they still have Trek Scubell,
<v Speaker 1>who is probably having the best year of his career,
<v Speaker 1>but Detroit's gonna have to get healthy for the playoffs.
<v Speaker 1>And could a team left the Boston Red Sox or
<v Speaker 1>maybe even the Texas Rangers close the season on a
<v Speaker 1>hot streak and make a bit of a run themselves
<v Speaker 1>and then over the American League. Yes, the Dodgers are
<v Speaker 1>still gonna try to win the whole thing, and with
<v Speaker 1>that roster, of course they're going to be in the mix.
<v Speaker 1>But the hottest team in the entire league is the
<v Speaker 1>Milwaukee Brewers, who were the first team to clinch a
<v Speaker 1>postseason slot this season. But we also know that Milwaukee
<v Speaker 1>has a bit of a history that they struggle when
<v Speaker 1>they get there. Can they change that this year? The
<v Speaker 1>Philadelphia Phillies have already clinched a postseason birth by winning
<v Speaker 1>the NL East, and Kyle Schwarber he's playing as good
<v Speaker 1>as he ever has. The Phillies are very dangerous. The
<v Speaker 1>Chicago Cubs will be making their first playoff visit since
<v Speaker 1>twenty eighteen. But my concern for the Cubs is they
<v Speaker 1>aren't always the most consistent. They'll be a good team,
<v Speaker 1>they'll lose, do a bad team. Not sure what to
<v Speaker 1>make of them. And then we have the San Diego Padres,
<v Speaker 1>the New York Mets, the Cincinnati Reds, and the Arizona
<v Speaker 1>Diamondbacks all battling for a wildcard. And I know the
<v Speaker 1>playoffs don't technically begin until next week, but there is
<v Speaker 1>basically playoff baseball being played right now every single night.
<v Speaker 1>Major League Baseball is actually finally interesting. And I'll be honest,
<v Speaker 1>as long as there isn't college football or the NFL,
<v Speaker 1>then yeah, I'll watch it. Hey, today on the dose,
<v Speaker 1>I know that I told you last week I was
<v Speaker 1>chasing a very interesting guest for this week. Well I
<v Speaker 1>rang that guest down and he was great, But then
<v Speaker 1>we had some technical difficulties and I don't want to
<v Speaker 1>bring you that interview until it is as good as
<v Speaker 1>it can be, so be patient on that. But today
<v Speaker 1>we are going to be recapping a wild weekend in
<v Speaker 1>booth the NFL and college football. You know, sometimes we
<v Speaker 1>think we're figuring some teams out, and then we have
<v Speaker 1>a weekend like this past week and we realize, yeah,
<v Speaker 1>we might not know anything yet. And I know that
<v Speaker 1>we've all been watching the NFL and college football and
<v Speaker 1>Major League Baseball, but don't forget that the WNBA playoffs
<v Speaker 1>are rolling along too. We will check in on how
<v Speaker 1>they are going and let you know what to expect
<v Speaker 1>going forward. And then one college football team is really
<v Speaker 1>really struggling right now. Could they be on a historical
<v Speaker 1>pace to underachieve our daily dose top five. We'll look
<v Speaker 1>at that in just a few moments, But first let's
<v Speaker 1>start off in college basketball, of all places, because Bruce
<v Speaker 1>Pearl has announced that he will be stepping down as
<v Speaker 1>the men's basketball coach at Auburn and is going to
<v Speaker 1>move into an ambassador's role in the athletic department as
<v Speaker 1>a special assistant to the athletic director. That is what
<v Speaker 1>the school announced on Monday. Steven Pearl, Bruce's son and
<v Speaker 1>the Tigers associate head coach, has received a five year
<v Speaker 1>contract to be the program's new head coach. But Bruce
<v Speaker 1>Pearl is sixty five. He's coming off of a season
<v Speaker 1>in which he guided Auburn to their second ever Final four. Now,
<v Speaker 1>the timing of this is a little weird to me.
<v Speaker 1>Why not do it last spring? Maybe Bruce was really
<v Speaker 1>thinking about it, Maybe he was really going through it
<v Speaker 1>trying to figure out what he wanted to do. Oh
<v Speaker 1>or maybe he wanted to do it at the last
<v Speaker 1>second so he can get his son hired. Got it.
<v Speaker 1>The Tigers earned the number one overall seed in the
<v Speaker 1>NCUBLEA Men's Tournament last year after winning the SEC regular
<v Speaker 1>season championship. They racked a thirty two wins before they
<v Speaker 1>fell to Florida in the national semifinal. But Pearl has
<v Speaker 1>been the head coach at Auburn for eleven years. He
<v Speaker 1>led the Tigers to six nc DOUBLEA Tournament appearances and
<v Speaker 1>both of the program's Final four runs. He went two
<v Speaker 1>forty six and one twenty five at Auburn, but only
<v Speaker 1>two hundred and thirty two of those games were recognized
<v Speaker 1>because of NCAA infractions, And they told us how to
<v Speaker 1>pretend games back in twenty sixteen and seven. It needn't happen.
<v Speaker 1>But hey, Bruce Pearl has been a coach wherever he's been.
<v Speaker 1>That brings a lot of excitement. To whatever program he's
<v Speaker 1>coaching at. He took Auburn, Tennessee, and Milwaukee to the tournament. Hey,
<v Speaker 1>I don't care how you cut it, it's pretty impressive.
<v Speaker 1>And yes, I will always remember him for ratting out
<v Speaker 1>Illinois when he was an assistant at Iowa. But Bruce
<v Speaker 1>Parrol did do other stuff too, pretty good stuff. It
<v Speaker 1>was a weird week in the NFL this past weekend.
<v Speaker 1>We're going to talk more about that later, but we
<v Speaker 1>also saw a number of injuries to some big name
<v Speaker 1>players this week too. The San Francisco forty nine Ers
<v Speaker 1>have not lost pass rusher Joey Bosa for the year
<v Speaker 1>with a torn rd ecl the Los Angeles Chargers lost
<v Speaker 1>running back Naji Harris with a blown achilles for the year.
<v Speaker 1>The Arizona Cardinals lost running back James Connor for the
<v Speaker 1>season with a right foot injury, and the Dallas Cowboys
<v Speaker 1>are going to be without star wide receiver Ceedee lamb
<v Speaker 1>At for a few weeks with an ugly high ankle
<v Speaker 1>spring that he's sustained on Sunday. But one player that
<v Speaker 1>we worried might be hurt this year is Miami Dolphins
<v Speaker 1>quarterback Tua Tongua by law. But nope, Tua is just fine,
<v Speaker 1>which actually might not be the news that Dolphins fans
<v Speaker 1>are hoping for because with three games under their belt,
<v Speaker 1>the Dolphins have yet to win a game, and Tua
<v Speaker 1>it hasn't been very good. He has five touchdowns, but
<v Speaker 1>he also has five turnovers. Well, Finns fans, I actually
<v Speaker 1>have some worse news for you because this daily dose
<v Speaker 1>Iteam president Big Rob has ut covered. Do you realize
<v Speaker 1>that to his contract whip of Dolphins it seriously might
<v Speaker 1>be the worst in the NFL. And this is coming
<v Speaker 1>from a guy whose team is currently still playing Russell
<v Speaker 1>Wilson thirty two million dollars this year to suck for
<v Speaker 1>the New York Giants and get benched. Oh and by
<v Speaker 1>the way, my Denver Broncos paid him fifty three million
<v Speaker 1>dollars last year to lose games for the Steelers. Well,
<v Speaker 1>check out the breakdown on Tua's contract, because here is
<v Speaker 1>what Tua is still owed from the Dolphins this year.
<v Speaker 1>Thirty nine million bucks steep the starting quarterback. Okay, Next
<v Speaker 1>year fifty six million bucks. Okay, that hurts. Twenty twenty
<v Speaker 1>seven fifty three million bucks. Okay, that hurts a lot. Oh,
<v Speaker 1>and then in twenty twenty eight, the Dolphins ohe to
<v Speaker 1>a sixty five million dollars. Here's the worst news. If
<v Speaker 1>the Dolphins cut to a it will cost them seventy
<v Speaker 1>nine point two million dollars in dead cap space. Miami,
<v Speaker 1>I've got bad news for you. You better get that
<v Speaker 1>guy wrapped in bubble wrap because you're paying him either way.
<v Speaker 1>Why Miami gave to it that contract, I will never know.
<v Speaker 1>And everyone's going to blame Tua because he's terrible or whatever,
<v Speaker 1>but that GM is the one who deserves to get
<v Speaker 1>hit in the head, not to it. He didn't give
<v Speaker 1>himself a contract. You gave it to him willingly. Just dumb. Finally,
<v Speaker 1>the WNBA playoffs are going right now and they are
<v Speaker 1>now down to the semi finals. And while some of
<v Speaker 1>the attention this year has been on the play on
<v Speaker 1>the floor, the Daily Does has also been keeping an
<v Speaker 1>eye on that whole you know, sex toy count where
<v Speaker 1>we're seeing these animals throwing sex toys out on the court.
<v Speaker 1>But it's interesting because we have yet to see a
<v Speaker 1>sex toy thrown out of the court in the playoffs
<v Speaker 1>just yet. I mean, security must really be cracking down
<v Speaker 1>they are apparently searching people very thoroughly as they enter
<v Speaker 1>the arenas to make sure that they don't have another
<v Speaker 1>embarrassing incident. And I mean, it isn't like people are
<v Speaker 1>going to try to hide those sex toys to stink man, right,
<v Speaker 1>I mean, where in the world would they even try
<v Speaker 1>to hide them? Right? Okay, but enough of that silly stuff.
<v Speaker 1>Let's get to the actual WNBA playoff games where we
<v Speaker 1>have seen some really impressive performances so far. So NFL
<v Speaker 1>Week three is now in the books. And funny because
<v Speaker 1>you know, every week in the NFL we try to
<v Speaker 1>figure out who teams really are. And we've already talked
<v Speaker 1>this season about some of the overreactions that we're seeing. Well,
<v Speaker 1>in Week three, the NFL had some shakeups because there
<v Speaker 1>are some things that we thought we knew and now
<v Speaker 1>we're not so sure. I'll show you what I mean.
<v Speaker 1>You know, we thought the Green Bay Packers were looking
<v Speaker 1>like a true title contender through the first two weeks.
<v Speaker 1>They had whipped the Detroit Lions and the Washington Commanders. Hey,
<v Speaker 1>those are both playoff teams from last year. So in
<v Speaker 1>Week three, the Packers went to Cleveland to face the
<v Speaker 1>crappy Browns who haven't even won a game yet. So
<v Speaker 1>Jordan Love apparently knew I was watching, and he absolutely sucked.
<v Speaker 1>Running Back Josh Jacobs had thirty yards on sixteen carries,
<v Speaker 1>and somehow the Browns block a late field goal and
<v Speaker 1>then make one of their own and upset the Packers
<v Speaker 1>thirteen to ten. The Packers were a seven and a
<v Speaker 1>half point favorite. That's big in the NFL, and the
<v Speaker 1>Packers are supposed to be a big dog, right, Yeah,
<v Speaker 1>but now we're not quite as sure we thought we knew.
<v Speaker 1>Now I don't know. The Indianapolis Colts are another team
<v Speaker 1>that it seems everyone got wrong going into the season.
<v Speaker 1>They bench quarterback Anthony Richardson for Daniel Jones. Honestly, we
<v Speaker 1>kind of thought they might be tanking. Yet turns out
<v Speaker 1>they might have known what they were doing. Daniel Jones,
<v Speaker 1>it seems like he just needed to get away from
<v Speaker 1>the New York Giants. Because the Colts are now three
<v Speaker 1>to zero after beating the Miami Dolphins. The Denver bron
<v Speaker 1>goes am the Tennessee Titans. No, it's not exactly Murderer's row,
<v Speaker 1>and they probably should have lost to Denver, but hey,
<v Speaker 1>they've won every week. More impressive, though, is the play
<v Speaker 1>of Daniel Jones, because he's now already thrown for over
<v Speaker 1>eight hundred yards. He has three touchdowns, but he has
<v Speaker 1>zero interceptions. We thought we knew who the Cults were.
<v Speaker 1>Now I'm not so sure. We thought we knew who
<v Speaker 1>the Chicago Bears were because after collapsing in Week one
<v Speaker 1>against the Minnesota Vikings, the Bears looked like they all
<v Speaker 1>but quit last week and they got blown out by
<v Speaker 1>the Detroit Lions. So in week three they host the
<v Speaker 1>Dallas Cowboys. I mean, the Cowboys aren't great, but they're
<v Speaker 1>pretty scrappy and they put up big offensive numbers the Bears.
<v Speaker 1>They might be going on three CHASO, please explain why
<v Speaker 1>the Bears jumped all over Dallas and Bears quarterback Caleb
<v Speaker 1>Williams probably had the best game of his career. He
<v Speaker 1>threw for two hundred and ninety eight yards and four
<v Speaker 1>touchdowns and painted his nails on the sideline and the
<v Speaker 1>Bears brottled the Cowboy thirty one to fourteen. So is
<v Speaker 1>this good Bears? Was this bad Cowboys? I don't know
<v Speaker 1>what to think. Now another mystery we've got to still
<v Speaker 1>figure out. The Atlanta Falcons have been another tough team
<v Speaker 1>to figure out because now that they have benched quarterback
<v Speaker 1>Kirk Cousins and put all their chips into the Michael
<v Speaker 1>Pennix basket, we thought Atlanta might be able to contend
<v Speaker 1>for the NFC South. That division isn't very good. They
<v Speaker 1>can win it, they were in it last year. So
<v Speaker 1>in Week one we're all looking like geniuses. Yes that
<v Speaker 1>Atlanta lost, but they took division rival Tampa Bay to
<v Speaker 1>the wire. Okay, so in week two they blow out
<v Speaker 1>the Minnesota Vikings, and in Week three Atlanta gets to
<v Speaker 1>play the crappy Carolina Panthers. Well, this will be a
<v Speaker 1>piece of cake. Atlanta is going to be in a
<v Speaker 1>dogfight in that NFC South division. And then the game
<v Speaker 1>started and Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young completely outplayed Peddix
<v Speaker 1>and the Panthers blew the Falcons out thirty to nothing.
<v Speaker 1>So now the Falcons are what a playoff contender? The
<v Speaker 1>worst team in the league. I don't know, I'm not
<v Speaker 1>really sure. Okay, So I've already flipped back and forth
<v Speaker 1>a few times on the Minnesota Vikings this year because
<v Speaker 1>the season is starting, they have a ton of offensive weapons,
<v Speaker 1>the defense is pretty stout. They just need quarterback JJ
<v Speaker 1>McCarthy to not be terrible. And if so, Minnesota is
<v Speaker 1>going to be a playoff contender. So they started the
<v Speaker 1>season with the Bears. They're down seventeen to six. They
<v Speaker 1>look awful. I'm checking out. This team might be in trouble.
<v Speaker 1>McCarthy doesn't look very good. Then suddenly the Vikings get hot,
<v Speaker 1>run off twenty one straight points, they win twenty seven
<v Speaker 1>to twenty four. Okay, so they are the team we
<v Speaker 1>thought they were. They're okay, there'll be a contender. The
<v Speaker 1>Vikings will be fine. And then they play Atlanta like
<v Speaker 1>I mentioned before, and the Falcons blow them out and
<v Speaker 1>McCarthy looks like an absolute dumpster fire and he leaves
<v Speaker 1>with an injury. Okay, so the Vikings are done. And
<v Speaker 1>then on Sunday they beat the devil out of the
<v Speaker 1>Cincinnati Bengals forty eight to ten with Carson Wentz starting
<v Speaker 1>at quarterback. Huh, I know the Bengals are banged up.
<v Speaker 1>They don't have Joe Burrow. Forty eight to ten. What
<v Speaker 1>is going on? I don't know what to think. Only
<v Speaker 1>thing I can figure out is that for some reason
<v Speaker 1>between Sam Darnold and Carson Wentz. Minnesota is like Heaven
<v Speaker 1>for ginger quarterbacks. I don't get it. I don't understand
<v Speaker 1>how this works. Finally, we have the confusing case of
<v Speaker 1>the Houston Texans, a playoff team the past two season,
<v Speaker 1>and they play in that terrible division, the AFC SUD
<v Speaker 1>so hey, they should be able to get back to
<v Speaker 1>the playoffs again this year. Remember quarterback CJ. Stroud's rookie year.
<v Speaker 1>He had twenty three touchdowns, he had five interceptions. The
<v Speaker 1>Texans went from three to thirteen to ten and seven
<v Speaker 1>with Stroud as a rookie and made the playoffs. They
<v Speaker 1>made it again last year. They beat the Chargers last year,
<v Speaker 1>even though Stroud wasn't quite as good. And now there's
<v Speaker 1>this year and Stroud has been awful. He has just
<v Speaker 1>two touchdowns, he has three interceptions, and the Texans are
<v Speaker 1>now zero to three with losses to the Rams respectable,
<v Speaker 1>the Buccaneers is somewhat respectable, and the Jaguars zero respect whatsoever.
<v Speaker 1>Now it isn't all Stroud's fault because the Texans offensive
<v Speaker 1>line is terrible. They have zero run game and CJ.
<v Speaker 1>Stroud has already been sacked eight times and hit nineteen
<v Speaker 1>times at just three games. I mean, you can blame
<v Speaker 1>Stroud for this start with the Texans, but it's not
<v Speaker 1>all his fault. The Houston Texans might be in some
<v Speaker 1>serious trouble. Hey, in the NFL, anything can happen on
<v Speaker 1>any given Sunday. We know that there's too much talent
<v Speaker 1>in that league. But now we have to try to
<v Speaker 1>figure out was Week three just a weird aberration this
<v Speaker 1>year or was it a sign up some things to
<v Speaker 1>come for some of these teams? And these things could
<v Speaker 1>be coming a little bit later this season. Hey, remember
<v Speaker 1>that you should be stopping by Daily doosports dot com
<v Speaker 1>every week to see what new things we have going on.
<v Speaker 1>Over there. We have links to the podcast as well
<v Speaker 1>as new articles that go up every week. They do
<v Speaker 1>have more of a local flavor. If you checked it
<v Speaker 1>out this week, you know I talked about the Denver
<v Speaker 1>Broncos and why they are struggling right now, so you
<v Speaker 1>might want to head over there and check that out.
<v Speaker 1>Remember you can always email the podcast at dally too
<v Speaker 1>Sports at gmail dot com. Do hear from a few listeners,
<v Speaker 1>so if it's good and I've shared with a few
<v Speaker 1>people close to the podcast this week. Some of it
<v Speaker 1>is not good. I've had some wild emails just recently,
<v Speaker 1>but it is always good to hear from you. And
<v Speaker 1>remember you can pick up daily dose gear over bear
<v Speaker 1>t shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, baseball caps. You can find it
<v Speaker 1>all over at dal dosports dot com. Make sure you're
<v Speaker 1>stopping by. You know, things aren't quite as confusing in
<v Speaker 1>college football because college football it's not exactly in any
<v Speaker 1>given Saturday scenario. Yes, we see some surprises, but let's
<v Speaker 1>be honest. LSU can play Southeast Louisiana one hundred times
<v Speaker 1>and that score is going to be fifty six to
<v Speaker 1>ten pretty much every single time. So it's not quite
<v Speaker 1>the same in college But we did still see a
<v Speaker 1>few surprises in college football this past week that kind
<v Speaker 1>of have us questioning ourselves. And by the way, I
<v Speaker 1>know Mike Gundhy is now out at Oklahoma State telling
<v Speaker 1>you right now get ready for a few more head
<v Speaker 1>coaches to go down very very soon. I'm looking right
<v Speaker 1>at you. Gainsville might be happening sooner than we expected.
<v Speaker 1>But we did have a few confusing college football teams
<v Speaker 1>to look at this past week two. Because you know,
<v Speaker 1>I really liked the Illinois fighting a lion I going
<v Speaker 1>into this season. I picked them to be a surprise
<v Speaker 1>and go to the College Football Playoff again. They returned
<v Speaker 1>to number of starters and head coach Brett Blima. Yes,
<v Speaker 1>he looks like the elderly version of butt headed by me,
<v Speaker 1>come co buthead, but his teams are usually pretty tough
<v Speaker 1>up front. Okay, so the aligne I blew out three
<v Speaker 1>pretty bad opponents to start the year. I'm feeling pretty
<v Speaker 1>good about my pick. And then this past week they
<v Speaker 1>faced Indiana and Illinois got boat raced sixty three to ten.
<v Speaker 1>I'm not even complaining the Illinois lost. I could see
<v Speaker 1>them losing a game or two, but sixty three to ten,
<v Speaker 1>and next up is USC. I don't have the first
<v Speaker 1>idea what to expect in that game. Now, I don't
<v Speaker 1>know what to expect from Illinois in general. Now, sixty
<v Speaker 1>three to ten, I could see you losing, but not
<v Speaker 1>losing like that. So who is Illinois really? I don't know.
<v Speaker 1>The Nebraska Cornhuskers look like they might be on the
<v Speaker 1>verge of breaking back into the national landscape. Head coach
<v Speaker 1>Matt Ruhle is always tough in year three. He's got
<v Speaker 1>quarterback Dylan Riola and a pretty decent defense, or so
<v Speaker 1>we thought. The corn Huskers blew out Cincinnati Akron okay
<v Speaker 1>in Houston Baptist and then on Saturday they hosted Michigan. Hey,
<v Speaker 1>I think Michigan is okay. I don't think they're great,
<v Speaker 1>but Michigan went into Lincoln and beat up the Huskers.
<v Speaker 1>And I know the final score was thirty twenty seven,
<v Speaker 1>but the Huskers scored a hail Mary prayer of a
<v Speaker 1>touchdown going into halftime, and then they got a garbage
<v Speaker 1>time touchdown very late in the game, with like less
<v Speaker 1>than a minute to play. Hey, Michigan controlled this game
<v Speaker 1>throughout in your backyard. And that Nebraska defense they look
<v Speaker 1>particularly soft and squishy. Now, the Huskers have a manageable schedule,
<v Speaker 1>but now I'm not so sure it matters because they
<v Speaker 1>look very soft upfront defensively. Yet again, we thought it
<v Speaker 1>might improve. Now I'm not so sure. The Oklahoma centers
<v Speaker 1>have been way better than anyone expected this year. As
<v Speaker 1>quarterback John Mattier has at times this year looked like
<v Speaker 1>the best quarterback in the country. That might sound crazy,
<v Speaker 1>go look with his numbers. He's been impressive. The Sooners
<v Speaker 1>have now beaten number fifteen Michigan and this past week
<v Speaker 1>they beat number twenty two Auburn. Hey is Oklahoma back?
<v Speaker 1>It kind of looks like it. And then it was
<v Speaker 1>announced yesterday that Mateir has a hand injury that is
<v Speaker 1>going to require surgery. He's going to be out for
<v Speaker 1>a while. Owing by the way, after Oklahoma plays Can't
<v Speaker 1>State next week. The schedule goes like this, Texas South Carolina, Ole,
<v Speaker 1>miss Tennessee, Alabama, and Missouri to close out the regular season.
<v Speaker 1>So as good as you feel right now, sooner Nation.
<v Speaker 1>I guess we'll see good luck, is what I'm saying.
<v Speaker 1>And the last team that has me a little bit
<v Speaker 1>confused is those Utah Utes. Because Utah went just five
<v Speaker 1>and seven last year. They had so many injuries and
<v Speaker 1>they lost like five win score games. But hey, Kyle
<v Speaker 1>Whittingham can coach, and the Utes might be a team
<v Speaker 1>to keep an eye on this year. They blew out UCLA,
<v Speaker 1>they blew out Kyle Poly, they blew out Wyoming, and
<v Speaker 1>then they hosted Texas Tech this past week. Now, it
<v Speaker 1>didn't surprise me that Tech beat Utah. We know the
<v Speaker 1>amount of money that Tech is putting into their program.
<v Speaker 1>But it did surprise me that Texas Tech out physical Utah.
<v Speaker 1>They kind of beat them up. Remember Kyle Whittingham said
<v Speaker 1>this is his best offensive line that he's ever had. Really,
<v Speaker 1>Texas Tech won the game thirty four to ten, and
<v Speaker 1>it was closer than that. I'm not saying that it
<v Speaker 1>was closer than that, but Texas Tech also had to
<v Speaker 1>do it with their backup quarterback for most of to day.
<v Speaker 1>That was surprising. Hey, isn't uncommon to see college football
<v Speaker 1>teams slip up. These are eighteen nineteen year old kids,
<v Speaker 1>but some of these teams, they're a little bit confusing.
<v Speaker 1>It's going to be a challenge to try to figure
<v Speaker 1>out who so many of these teams truly are. And remember,
<v Speaker 1>conference play is now really getting rolling. So I expect
<v Speaker 1>to see a few more surprises over the next few
<v Speaker 1>weeks because they are most likely coming. Hey, this week,
<v Speaker 1>if you don't have anything on Saturday, keep it that way,
<v Speaker 1>stay in front of your TV because college football is
<v Speaker 1>going to be in full effect. There are some really
<v Speaker 1>sneaky good games between teams that maybe are ranked. But
<v Speaker 1>we also have twenty one USC at twenty three, Illinois
<v Speaker 1>number four, LSU at number thirteen, Ole Miss number six,
<v Speaker 1>Oregon at number three, Penn State, and number seventeen Alabama
<v Speaker 1>at number five. Georgia don't make any bonds on Saturday.
<v Speaker 1>Be sure you're sighting on your couch with that TV on,
<v Speaker 1>because it is going to be a glorious weekend of
<v Speaker 1>college football. Now, as we do so many weeks here
<v Speaker 1>at the Daily Dos, we need to get over to
<v Speaker 1>our daily dose. Top five kids. The Clemson Tigers are
<v Speaker 1>not very good. Remember that Clemson was the number four
<v Speaker 1>team preseason in the country. Hey, they have quarterback k Klubnick,
<v Speaker 1>they have most of their defense coming back. They have
<v Speaker 1>all the ingredients they should be a They have a
<v Speaker 1>great head coach in Dablos Swinney. He's won titles. Okay,
<v Speaker 1>So when they lost their opener seventeen to ten to LSU,
<v Speaker 1>we were like, no big deal, They'll still rally. And
<v Speaker 1>then they were trailing Troy sixteen to nothing in their
<v Speaker 1>second game, but maybe they were just shaking off the
<v Speaker 1>LSU game. They came back to win. Well weird, but
<v Speaker 1>they came back to win and then may lose a
<v Speaker 1>tough game to UNRENK Georgia Tech and now this past week,
<v Speaker 1>Clemson got manhandled by Syracuse at home, thirty four to
<v Speaker 1>twenty one, and that was with Syracuse's backup quarterback, no less.
<v Speaker 1>But Clemson has no playmakers, their defense is below average,
<v Speaker 1>and now the Tigers go to Chapel Hill to play
<v Speaker 1>Bill Belichick and his girlfriend. Hey, there's a strong chance
<v Speaker 1>nobody wins that game. And here's the bad news for Clemson.
<v Speaker 1>Dablaswinny isn't going anywhere. You might not like it, but
<v Speaker 1>he's not. With the way his contract is written, you
<v Speaker 1>will owe him a full sixty million bucks. I don't
<v Speaker 1>know if I see that happening to go out and
<v Speaker 1>hire a maybe better coach. But Clemson, they shure not
<v Speaker 1>look like they're riding this ship anytime soon. And if
<v Speaker 1>things continue to go as they are, this is going
<v Speaker 1>to be one of the biggest collapses by a preseason
<v Speaker 1>ranked team in history. Today, our Daily Doose Top five
<v Speaker 1>is counting down five of the biggest disappointments in college
<v Speaker 1>football history that started this season ranked. Could Clemson eventually
<v Speaker 1>be on this list? We're gonna see how they stack up.
<v Speaker 1>We start off at number five and it was just
<v Speaker 1>a few years ago. Wow, that Texas. A and M
<v Speaker 1>seemed poised to make a big leap forward into the
<v Speaker 1>public consciousness as Jimba Fisher was entering his fifth year
<v Speaker 1>as the head coach of the Aggies. A and M
<v Speaker 1>had gone eight and four of the previous season, not
<v Speaker 1>great but solid. But what had everyone so excited as
<v Speaker 1>they headed into the twenty twenty two season was the
<v Speaker 1>fact that Jimbo Fisher had the top recruiting class in
<v Speaker 1>the country and those new additions they were expected to
<v Speaker 1>be a big upgrade. Yes, they were unproven, but they
<v Speaker 1>were talented. As you probably know, that did not end
<v Speaker 1>up being the case. Quarterback Haynes King was an early
<v Speaker 1>Heisman hopeful, and following a week one win over Sam Houston,
<v Speaker 1>the Aggies were ranked number six in the country. And
<v Speaker 1>then A and M was stunned by Appalachians State at home.
<v Speaker 1>Well that's not good, okay. So they answered with two
<v Speaker 1>wins over Miami and over Arkansas, both ranked opponents, I
<v Speaker 1>might add, Okay, maybe Appalationan State was just a weird glitch.
<v Speaker 1>Maybe they were better than expected. Maybe A and M
<v Speaker 1>took them for granted. Yeah, and then A and M
<v Speaker 1>lost six games in a row. The Aggies would finish
<v Speaker 1>just five and seven and Jimbo Fisher would be fired
<v Speaker 1>the following season. Hey, college station was hopeful. In twin
<v Speaker 1>it did not go well. They were ranked number six,
<v Speaker 1>and A and M comes in today at number five.
<v Speaker 1>We move on to number four and we go back
<v Speaker 1>to nineteen eighty four where the Pitt Panthers actually used
<v Speaker 1>to be good. I know that sounds crazy now, but
<v Speaker 1>it's true. Remember Pitt actually won a national title back
<v Speaker 1>in seventy six, and after that win they started to
<v Speaker 1>run where we would see Pitt appear in bowl games
<v Speaker 1>for nine years in a row. Well, in eighty four,
<v Speaker 1>Pitt was ranked number three in the Ape Pole after
<v Speaker 1>going eight and three in eighty three, and in eighty three,
<v Speaker 1>that was the year after Dan Marino had gone to
<v Speaker 1>the NFL, and they still went eight and three. So
<v Speaker 1>Pitt is this good? This is just who they are.
<v Speaker 1>And in eighty four they had offensive guard Bill Frelik,
<v Speaker 1>who ended up being a phenomenal NFL player, and defensive
<v Speaker 1>end Chris Dolman who ended up going to the Pro
<v Speaker 1>Football Hall of Fame. So it was widely expected that's
<v Speaker 1>good every year. This is just who they are. However,
<v Speaker 1>in eighty four, Yeah, Pitt didn't live up to those expectations.
<v Speaker 1>They lost to an unranked BYU squad in Week one,
<v Speaker 1>which dropped them to number seventeen, and that was actually
<v Speaker 1>the start of a four game losing streak they never recovered.
<v Speaker 1>Pitt went three seven and one, including Alasta, Bruce Arians,
<v Speaker 1>and the Temple Owls. Yeah, Pitt wasn't very good in
<v Speaker 1>eighty four. They come in today at number four, moving
<v Speaker 1>on to number three. I know that Alabama fans are
<v Speaker 1>just used to contending for a title every year, but
<v Speaker 1>that hasn't actually always been the case, because Mike Dubos
<v Speaker 1>led Alabama to a four and seven record when he
<v Speaker 1>coached Alabama for the first time in ninety seven, but
<v Speaker 1>then they went seven and five. The following year, they
<v Speaker 1>went ten and two and narrowly lost to Michigan and
<v Speaker 1>a quarterback by the name of Tom Brady in the
<v Speaker 1>Orange Bowl in nineteen ninety nine. Well, in two thousand,
<v Speaker 1>the Crimson Tide were sitting at number three in the
<v Speaker 1>polls when they kicked off the year. The Tide had
<v Speaker 1>Andrews out quarterback. They had a Mad Gallaway in the backfield,
<v Speaker 1>so they open a season against unranked UCLA and a
<v Speaker 1>quarterback named Corey Pauce and a running back name to
<v Speaker 1>Sean Foster who just got fired at UCLA and a
<v Speaker 1>wide receiver named Freddie Mitchell lit up the Tide thirty five,
<v Speaker 1>twenty four. Okay, so Alabama bounced back. They beat Vanderbilt,
<v Speaker 1>but then they lost the Southern Miss in Week three,
<v Speaker 1>twenty one ZIP. When everything was said and done, Alabama
<v Speaker 1>went just three and eight and Mike Dubow's was forced
<v Speaker 1>to resign in disgrace at the end of the season
<v Speaker 1>because the Tide had lost five in a row. The
<v Speaker 1>two thousand Alabama team started the season number three. They
<v Speaker 1>finished the year with just three wins, and they come
<v Speaker 1>in today. You guessed it at number three. We have
<v Speaker 1>to go back aways for our number two entry though,
<v Speaker 1>because back in nineteen sixty three, yes there was football
<v Speaker 1>back then. The Ole Miss Rebels finished the regular season
<v Speaker 1>with a seven oh and two record while finishing as
<v Speaker 1>SEC champions, and then they lost to Alabama and the
<v Speaker 1>Sugar Bowl. So they were ranked number seven in the
<v Speaker 1>final poll. And in sixty four they were returning quarterback
<v Speaker 1>Jim Wetherley and a running back named Mike Dennis plus
<v Speaker 1>most of their starting defense. So the ole Miss Rebels
<v Speaker 1>were actually the preseason number one in sixty four. Yeah,
<v Speaker 1>and then the game started. Ole Miss cruised to a
<v Speaker 1>victory over Memphis State in week one. They won thirty nine,
<v Speaker 1>and hey, they're legit. And then they lost to unranked
<v Speaker 1>Kentucky in week two, and then they lost to unranked Florida.
<v Speaker 1>They tied unranked Vandy, and then they lost to number
<v Speaker 1>nine LSU and they ended the season by losing back
<v Speaker 1>to back games to unreked opponent. They lost to Mississippi State,
<v Speaker 1>and then somehow they made it to the Blue Bonnot
<v Speaker 1>Bowl and they lost to Tulsa. After opening the season
<v Speaker 1>at number one, the ole Miss Rebels would go just
<v Speaker 1>five five and one. Somehow they still made it to
<v Speaker 1>a bowl game. I don't know how. There were only
<v Speaker 1>nine total bowl games back then. Olemos got one and
<v Speaker 1>they lost that two and the nineteen sixty four ole
<v Speaker 1>Miss Rebels come in today at number two. So we
<v Speaker 1>reached the number one team that started this season ranked
<v Speaker 1>and proved to be a bitter disappointment. And we go
<v Speaker 1>back to twenty twelve, where Lane Kiffin was in his
<v Speaker 1>third year as the coach at USC. And this was
<v Speaker 1>also the first year they were eligible for a bowl
<v Speaker 1>during his tenure because remember those sanctions from Reggie Bush. Yeah,
<v Speaker 1>and expectations were super high because the Trojans had finished
<v Speaker 1>the twenty eleven season with a ten to two record.
<v Speaker 1>I mean, USC was that on paper, they had quarterback
<v Speaker 1>Matt Barkley, they had receivers Robert Woods, Nelson Aguilar, and
<v Speaker 1>Marquise Lee, as well as a top ranked defense. Usc
<v Speaker 1>Any of the season ranked as the number one team
<v Speaker 1>in the country, and they got off to a two
<v Speaker 1>and on start, but then they were upset by Stanford
<v Speaker 1>in week three. Okay, well, they bounced back. They rolled
<v Speaker 1>off four straight wins and then we saw things fall
<v Speaker 1>apart in the second half of the season because USC
<v Speaker 1>lost five of their final six games and ultimately finished
<v Speaker 1>unranked at seven and six. Lane Kiffen would be fired
<v Speaker 1>the following season on the airport tarmac in Tempe, Arizona,
<v Speaker 1>after the Trojans gave up sixty two points to Arizona
<v Speaker 1>State in twenty twelve. USC actually became just the second
<v Speaker 1>team in college football history to start the season at
<v Speaker 1>number one and not even be ranked when the final
<v Speaker 1>polls were released, they joined that sixty four ole miss team. Now, realistically,
<v Speaker 1>it's not any of these teams fault that they drop
<v Speaker 1>so hard. The mistake is actually by the media and
<v Speaker 1>the fans and the voters that elevate these teams to
<v Speaker 1>such high status before they've even played a game. Which
<v Speaker 1>is why I don't believe college football polls should count
<v Speaker 1>for anything until at least October first, because, as the
<v Speaker 1>Clemson Tigers are showing us this year, we just don't
<v Speaker 1>really know how teams are until we see something on
<v Speaker 1>the field. Hey, next, within the Dose, like I said,
<v Speaker 1>I am chasing something a little bit different for you.
<v Speaker 1>I am chasing a guest that has a very interesting
<v Speaker 1>story and it's currently doing some very interesting work in
<v Speaker 1>the world of sports. Trust me, you will not want
