00:00:00
Speaker 1: There were twelve trades done on the final day of the trade period, but it might have been a deadline day. That was more about the deals that didn't get done. This is Coach AFL Show on the final day of the trade period. My name is Josh Brons, who got Glenn McPhie and Chris cavanagh with me. Boys, we've made it to the end of the deadline. A few guys were left waiting, and most importantly, Zach Merritt was left at the altar macup. We saw Tom Patrow march up and down the corridor. It didn't quite happen. Talk us through the Senex.
00:00:22
Speaker 2: He got some k's up in those legs, didn't he Toms Bratrurou marching between the Essendon room and the Hawthorne room. Sensationally, the deal didn't go through, and we know that. Half an hour before the end of the trade period. Hawthorne revised their offer. Their offer was pick ten picked twenty twenty sorry, pick ten picked twenty two future first round in Henry Huswait, which they thought would get the deal done. Essendon said, no, deal not happening, so it then peeded out. There's a lot of tension in that room towards the end, and Hawthorne hadn't ruled out having another crack at zach Merit next year. They said they're going to continue to pursue these high end talent players.
00:00:57
Speaker 3: They know that it is a difficult scenario.
00:00:59
Speaker 2: Interestingly enough, zach Merritis shouted, we know that, but he contacted new president Andrew Welsh today and almost pleaded to get out of Tyler Marie.
00:01:08
Speaker 3: But he's staying.
00:01:09
Speaker 2: It's going to make for a very very awkward day on a preseason training Yeah.
00:01:13
Speaker 1: If he's not gone now we know that. Who's the winner out of that is Essenon the winner for keeping? Are they lose of a holding on to someone that he doesn't want to beat there?
00:01:20
Speaker 2: Well, it's an interesting point, isn't it, because in twelve months time it could be in the same situation and he's probably certainly not worth as a thirty one year old in twelve months.
00:01:27
Speaker 3: Time not worth as much.
00:01:28
Speaker 2: But I think from the point of view of Essendon they needed to be seen as the winner here. I think they wanted to make a statement about where this club is going. So while it's going to be very awkward, they do believe that zach Merritt is a professional. What was interesting Matt Rose has said tonight that his teammates want him to be a part of this team.
00:01:47
Speaker 3: Which is interesting because a really awkward best and Farris Night.
00:01:51
Speaker 2: So it's going to take a fear bit of work to getting back on the same page. But he really has got no choice because there's two more years to run on that contract, and so you've got to say that.
00:02:00
Speaker 3: And then stood their ground and they said they were going to Yeah.
00:02:02
Speaker 1: Yeah, they definitely stood firm a couple of contracted players that initially Melbourn stood semi firm on Christomer Truck and they were definitely not firm at all about Clayton Ova. They were done reasonably early cap they were done with a little bit of time for the trade period. Helped you get your copy in What did you make of those deals?
00:02:15
Speaker 4: Yes, it was interesting. I mean Petrarca gol Ca has paid up for him. I gave up three first round picks for him seven and eight in this draft and a first round pick next year, which is pretty high for us to pay for a guy who's about to turn thirty in January, I believe. And then on the flip side, Clayton Oliver, they give him away for a third round pick, so cheaper chips.
00:02:37
Speaker 3: Cheapest chips.
00:02:38
Speaker 4: So yeah, interesting contrast between those two. But at the end of the day, Melbourn's ended up with Tim lamb said tonight that they have eight first round picks in a space of four years, because I've got two first rounds this year, two next year obviously out of Harvey Langford and Davie Lindsay last year and the year before that. So they're in a pretty good spot for the rebuilder. And they're gonna have fourteen premiership players from twenty twenty one left on their list next year, so they are turning over the list a little bit now. But yeah, two guys and we're on long term contracts now out.
00:03:08
Speaker 1: Yeah, gone with those contracts to other places. We'll talk about gold Goost a little bit later, but from Melbourne. They also snuck in Jack Steele, a little bit of a surprise that came today pretty quick. What do you see overall about them losing two champions, getting in an arrival captain and I guess bringing a lot of young players.
00:03:22
Speaker 4: Yeah, well, similar to Oliver, they didn't really have to pay much for Steel in the end. So they get a captain and he's on a three year deal at Melbourne. Now he had a two years remaining at Sint Kilda, but he was basically squeezed out of there, pushed out of there. So yeah, Melbourne's pretty happy to have him in as a leader and you know he can lead that midfield with Harvey Langford and these guys next year.
00:03:41
Speaker 1: Now, the biggest deal that did get done happened in the final minutes, about three minutes ago. They all shook hands in the Carlton's suite. That was Charlie Kerner going to Sydney. It looked funny him in red and white co was next year. The deal was three first round of Sydney's this year, next year and the year after. Macker three seconds came back and Will Hayward also go to Carlton as part of that deal. It's a monster trade amongst a risk by Sydney and amongst a gambling. We'll see what happens.
00:04:03
Speaker 3: It is and sometimes you've got to take that risk.
00:04:05
Speaker 2: Was there at any stage today you thought, Barci that that deal wouldn't go through.
00:04:08
Speaker 3: It was went late. We thought it might have go a little bit earlier than that.
00:04:11
Speaker 1: Yeah, I was reasonably confident it was always going to happen at the sticking point the whole way through, with Sydney throwing in that twenty twenty seven first round and they didn't want to do it the whole way through. Carlton negotiations seemed to have picked up yesterday about that where Carlton initially wasn't talking at all, and they said, maybe just throwing that extravander and we'll start and see how we can go. You could tell definitely. At about quarter past seven, Paul Connors and Robbie Derartzer who managed Joe Kner, went into the Carlton box on the hand of the front Straitch near Austen and I think that was probably Sydney and Carlton really getting down to the nuts and bolts. Ten minutes later they were all clapping in there.
00:04:43
Speaker 3: Well, that's always a good sign.
00:04:44
Speaker 2: Where Tom Petroro was locked in discussion with Hawthorne trying to work out how we can get this deal done, and the Connors team strode through here very happy with the way, and poor Tom had went out the other way.
00:04:55
Speaker 3: He was I had to break the bad news to Zach Merritt.
00:04:58
Speaker 1: Yeah, it was really an insane for Carlton. So they lose Charlie Kenner, they got little Haired, They've got Oni FloraNT earlier in the day and a separate deal from Sydney they brought in Campbell Chester Liam Reedy. It was a huge busy trade period. What do you think are they worse without Charlie Kenny is? Obviously? Can they sort of mend it around the edges?
00:05:14
Speaker 3: Well?
00:05:14
Speaker 4: So, Charlie Coner kicked thirty two goals last years leading goal kicker. Harry McCay was next best for twenty two. So can Harry McCoy shouldered the load there in the four line next year because he's going to have to. Michael Voss is entering his fifth season next year already under pressure. Doesn't have Charlie now it makes a difference. So, yes, you get in Oli Florin, to get in Hayward, do you bring back Daggers Smith, You get a couple of more draft picks in. But they're still a little way back, aren't they from what they were this year?
00:05:44
Speaker 1: Even Yeah, they've really retold on the front thover, They've got runners in. That's what they wanted. They wanted kickers. I guess they've done that Mac. But Michael Voss, he has to play finals next year survive. I think that's pretty clear. Are they going to play finals? Chris Davie said they're going to be better next year than this year, they think after this trade period.
00:05:59
Speaker 2: But they lost probably their best playoff. I'm not certain that they're going to be better. It's going to be interesting because sometimes it takes with a whole lot of new guys coming into a team, it takes a while to sort of bed that system down. So I love the fact that Michael Voss has been aggressive with his language and he's messaging, you know, since the Best and Fairest and the like, there's gonna he's going to go out swinging.
00:06:18
Speaker 3: Whatever happens, He's going to have a crack. So they're going to be in the mix.
00:06:21
Speaker 2: It's very hard to see who goes in and who There's a couple of teams on the outside who might go in. It's you can't fit eight. Sorry, you can't fit about twelve into eight GNU.
00:06:29
Speaker 3: It's impossible.
00:06:30
Speaker 1: It's hard to see them being better than Sydney.
00:06:33
Speaker 2: You've got a possibility, I think to jump South strange, but they could leap to top four, you know, if the if their best players and their midfield guns really you know, have a reasonable season with their bodies.
00:06:44
Speaker 3: I think with Charlie Gurno there.
00:06:46
Speaker 2: I'm not sure the SCG completely suits Charlie in that sense, but but you know he could if his body's right. He had three operations as we remember throughout the past twelve months, So if his body's right, he's going to be a really good player for them.
00:06:58
Speaker 4: Voss, they said six weeks go that Charlie, they weren't going to answer calls on Charlie didn't.
00:07:03
Speaker 3: Yeah, how changes came.
00:07:04
Speaker 4: It changes quickly, But yeah, I think it sets them a fair way back or struggle to see how they make.
00:07:09
Speaker 1: For this next year. And you're the draft expect comes that's three first round is handed over for a guy, as you said, Macca, that has wonky knees, He hasn't played a lot of games in a lot of these seasons. And what kind of risk is that and is it worth it for a team that thinks this can volt them straight back into premiscire In contention.
00:07:23
Speaker 4: Yeah, well, I guess the first round, as we're talking about, aren't what you would normally expect first rounds to be because this draft is so compromised next year with the same Tazzy coming in after that.
00:07:34
Speaker 1: Yeah, so that's a lot of compromising the Tazzy one, that's for sure.
00:07:36
Speaker 4: There's a lot of compromise drafts coming up. So yeah, I think Citty had to pay up and the end they did.
00:07:42
Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll move on to the winners and lose. We always love it and the trade perod hard to grade really, but we'll do it anyway, Maca, who is your winner?
00:07:49
Speaker 3: Well? I thought some Kilda like they held their nerve on rowand Marshall they.
00:07:52
Speaker 1: I know one person who doesn't agree luckily.
00:07:54
Speaker 2: Yeah, no, no, let's let's got some got some issues with the Security Football Club and I think let's hope he didn't buy any real estate, you know. From that, you know, that was really tough and it was Ross was quite defensive in regards to Rossline was quite defensive with your questioning Barnsy about you know, their situation there. I just think miss and Kilda what they've been able to do is bring in talent. They haven't been able to do that for a long long time, so they've been able to bring in some high end talent.
00:08:19
Speaker 3: Everything's got to work for them to be right.
00:08:20
Speaker 2: I'm not certain they'll play finals, but the fact that they've been able to keep Rowing Marshall, I think is really important. Ross is going to work now, he said Cory en Wright. It's one of the great minds in football and he's trying to work out how that two rack scenario could work. So I think that's I think the fact that they're able to keep Marshall was a real bonus. So I think in the end, you've got to say that they've been winners. They held for When Gubby told me about three months ago that they would not trade.
00:08:43
Speaker 3: Rowan Marshall, I'm not sure that I believed him, but he was right.
00:08:47
Speaker 4: Yeah, Yeah, what about UKV Yeah, so gold Coast for mine, I reckon They've ended up pretty well.
00:08:52
Speaker 3: So Kristin Petarka.
00:08:53
Speaker 4: Comes in, jamariyugil Haagen comes in for pick seventy four.
00:08:56
Speaker 1: They've paid nothing for him, and that's pretty good.
00:08:58
Speaker 4: They've They've lost Sam Flanders, Connor, Butteric, Brandon fair Ready, Malcom Rosenes Jr. So not too much more fringe players out the door. And at the same time, they've retained their their draft points. So they came into the trap period with three hundred and forty nine draft points, they exit it with three thousand, seven hundred and seventy three draft points.
00:09:18
Speaker 1: This is what we give the numbers because you will calculated direct.
00:09:22
Speaker 4: So if Richmond bid on Zeke Hill and have picked three and bit on Dylan Patterson at pick five, just say they need three thousand, five hundred and seventy six points to match those two bits, so they're covered. So they're any good spot. They get those two in. They've got Patarka and you Gahagan and as I said, and up and away for dem Hardwick and the sons next year.
00:09:42
Speaker 1: Yeah, they get in two jets. We believe in the draft and they get in potentially two jets as mature players. Are they premise a contender in your rise as with Daniel in October a bit.
00:09:51
Speaker 4: Earlier to call them a premiership contender just yet, but I mean they played finals.
00:09:55
Speaker 3: They want to five this year. I think they can take another step.
00:09:58
Speaker 4: Maybe they make it, see.
00:09:58
Speaker 3: Me, Maybe they make a prelim next for colleague.
00:10:00
Speaker 2: John Ruff has got them maybe playing against the Brisbane lines in the Grand finals.
00:10:04
Speaker 1: Fineapple Sidney was my winner. They got in the probably the best player in the trade period. I think you can argue with Christopher Traka Ben. I think he's the best pedigree. He's probably the best player. They had to give up a lot, they caved in the end on that final third first round pick, but they got what they wanted. They got the man that Jelong couldn't and they got him in the door and it has to be a big win. What they needed this whole time was a key forward that can rip gains apart and this one's and now have a dual common medal are standing at full forward following a long lineage of others. Yeah, job speaking, Yeah, they're going to be a bit scary next year if he's If he's up and running losers. We've kind of dread this, but we also secretly like it. Back I'll start with you again.
00:10:41
Speaker 3: Well, it is hard North Melbourne didn't do a lot.
00:10:44
Speaker 2: So while they haven't really gone backwards in a lot of ways, they didn't step forwards, and that's obviously not what they were trying to do. They weren't able to like some killed drag someone and drag a couple of big key players down through the door, particularly with defense.
00:10:56
Speaker 3: That was the problem.
00:10:57
Speaker 2: They keep Joys, Simpkin, Collingwood would never really in the mix for there if they're offering a future second and North wanted to first. And I don't think finnbar Maley. He didn't have a contract in that sense. So they don't really lose anyone, but they didn't really step forward. I would have loved to have seen them be able to pick up someone through free agency.
00:11:13
Speaker 3: Obviously they get Spargo in.
00:11:14
Speaker 2: The door, which helps, but yeah, it just didn't take that progression that I was really hoping they could do.
00:11:19
Speaker 1: Yeah, that sort of flat line. Haven't they a new cav Hawthorne for me?
00:11:23
Speaker 4: We touched on it before, but Zach merret deal not getting done. They pretty much went all in on him. There was no backup plan. It didn't seem like. They obviously lost Judge Warple too, so that compounds that they now don't have Warple. They didn't get another midfielder in and that was their weakness this year, so I think that and they lost Gas as well. Songs not so much of a problem, but yeah, I think they're going to be struggling for midfield depth.
00:11:48
Speaker 3: Next season.
00:11:49
Speaker 1: Yeah, after talking Turkey on trying to be a premission contender, sandmache I said a lot of things at the best in fairst, I guess they haven't really taken a step forward in this trade period. At least Jelong was my loser. Obviously they were in for Charlie Kerner, couldn't get him. They offered the three first and that was about there on the offer they came to the party today for Ronald Marshall offered up that future first round. There had been a bit of a sticking point. Then they offered up a second rounder as well, and sin Kilda wasn't answering the phone makers as you said before. So CAATs missed their two targets. Obviously got James Warpole as a free agent. They lost Patrick Retchko. We weren't expecting me, you go.
00:12:19
Speaker 3: It was the one that shocked me. I knew there was going to.
00:12:20
Speaker 1: Be Yeah, he was already delicted, so you can't really say they lost him. But to only bring in Warple, I think they'll be a tad disappointed. But the Cats with premiership contenders again next year, I think looking at that list and they were in front in the second half and they going finally a month ago, so they're still right in the mix. Before we go there, I guess the guys that were left at the altar booku Kamas, Rowland, Marshall, Kalamarchie and his said Zac Merritt was still left their dry sinking somewhat, which one of those. I guess surprised you guys most that they didn't get to that.
00:12:47
Speaker 2: There were a couple, but I thought the Archie won surprise me cave in that sense because I thought that would get done. He's a dual Brisbane Lines Premiership player. Not very often do you get a manager come out with the Adelaie people. I've never seen Williams came out on the front join what chance is he being the Brisbane Lines the next year?
00:13:04
Speaker 3: And he said zero chance.
00:13:05
Speaker 1: Which came one minute after Doman Brogio said of Bristoine, we'll talk to and trying it a new deal for him.
00:13:10
Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm not sure that's going to be happening. That's the one that really got me.
00:13:14
Speaker 2: I just assumed all the way through that that would get done and it hasn't.
00:13:17
Speaker 3: So watched this space on that one.
00:13:19
Speaker 4: Well, yeah, he potentially walks through to the pre season draft now, which is strange. It doesn't really happen anymore. The players normally get their way, so especially premiership players.
00:13:27
Speaker 1: As you say, and speaking of walking, we're going to be walking out in Marble Stadium now. The trade period is done. We've reached the end. Thanks for following us all the way through and Coach Sports and watching all that shows along along the way. Make sure they stay tuned for all the updates and all the wash up that's coming in the next few days.
