of this commentary is Let's party. What makes your life worth living? Most

of us are ranked pleasure near the top. Pleasure shows up in various ways

and forms. Some guys are weakened warriors or adrenaline addicts who enjoy extreme sports

motocross tricks, skiing, rock climbing, and the likes of it being nature

outdoors. Others are TV sports and fantasy league junkies, who, along with

their buddies, passionately followish their teams. Still others enjoy more hands on pursuit,

such as remodeling homes or restoring older cars. And then there's a group

of guys who get their kicks through less productive, even destructive activities, such

as gambling, using porn, drinking excessively, or abusing other kinds of drugs.

The one similarity in all these activities is this. Although they may be

diversions that get one's minds off of work and other stressors, not a single

one of them can bring lasting fulfillment. The skydiamond experience ends with one's feet

hit the ground. A favorite team may be plagued with injuries and have a

terrible season. Home improvement projects turn into money and time devouring monsters, and

after the binge hangover, whether it be physical, financial, relational, always

shows up right on schedule. The teacher who wrote the Book of Ecclesiastics took

the idea of pursuing distraction to the extreme. This individual, probably King Solomon,

used his global influence as seemingly endless resources to look for meaning in a

variety of pleasurable activities rather tremendous wealth, and used it to obtain service to

work for him as singers to entertain him. He built an opulent palace and

other structures with extravagant gardeners to bring him delight. He sought happiness through alcohol

use. He even acquired a ridiculously large harem to satisfy his sexual desires.

Solomon probably had more pleasure promising possessions and experiences than anyone else in history.

But did he find happiness. Absolutely not. Pleasure only brought more disappointment.

Why because he was looking for meaning and activities that were doomed from the beginning

to disappoint. At best, pleasure temporarily diverts us from the hard realities of

life. When we try to make pleasure pleasure our God, it just lets

us down. False gods never follow through on their promises. They merely entrap

us so that we keep coming back from more and more. There's an empty

space inside every human being that we all desperately try to fill in some way.

But the teacher of Ecclesiastics is crystal clear, and as counsel to his

readers, trust me, friends, I've tried it all, and my one

conclusion after a lifetime and pleasurable pursuits is this only God can fill that void

and provide ultimate meaning in life. Amen. Things to take away from the

commentary where do you find pleasure in life? How would you respond to the

statement God wants you to find your pleasure in him? What are some ways

you could assess whether God himself is your primary source of satisfaction? All right,

y'all, we got our minds on, our eyes fixed on material stuff

and flimsy things, you know, temporary stuff. But we gotta keep our

eyes on the prize, eternal promises, eternal hope. Amen, Praise the
