Hey, this is Pastor John Ryan Cantu from PNEUMA Church in Houston, Texas.
Thank you for listening to the message today.
I hope that it blesses you and all those. that you share it with.
God bless you.
He's got a shout of glorious praise in his house.
Jesus, thank you, Lord.
Thank you, Father.
Worship your name.
Hallelujah.
God is good all the time, isn't he?
Amen.
God is got God wants to do something this morning.
He's already doing it.
He's already doing it.
I believe the word that is going to be preached this morning was a it was a word that um I didn't plan on preaching.
I planned on preaching another sermon.
I was already, I already was studying for it, and this one, I couldn't, I couldn't shake it.
And um so right there where you're at, if you would Turn to Matthew, Matthew chapter seven, thank you, Lord.
Holy Spirit, have your way.
Have your way with this word, my God.
I pray that it'd be sensitive to your spirit, my God.
I pray, Lord, that we would have sensitive ears.
To hear what you want to say this morning.
Through your word.
Thank you, Jesus.
Matthew 7, 15 through 23.
You have it?
Jesus says this It says, beware of false prophets.
Somebody say, beware.
Who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves You will recognize them by their fruits.
Are grapes gathered from thorn bushes or figs from thistles?
So every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit.
A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit.
Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
Thus you will recognize them by their fruit.
Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven.
But the one who does the will of the Father who is in heaven.
On that day, many will say to me, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name?
Did we not cast out demons in your name?
Did we not do mighty works in your name?
And then I will declare to them, I never knew you.
Depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.
Amen.
Praise God.
You can take your seat this morning.
I know it's not the most encouraging passage of scripture.
I want to begin by saying, you know, people have their own agenda.
And I don't want to be cynical.
I don't want to preach from a place of anger or frustration.
But I think we need to be aware of the fact that the enemy is at work to distract us from what matters the absolute most.
It's very easy for us to get distracted.
Very easy.
We live in a world, you know, full of opinions.
We got Uh opinions full of you know political and theological and cultural commentary and we live in a world that's divided, a nation that's divided, a church that is divided.
You can't get on social media without being bombarded by like these super long posts that are trying to get you to think a certain way.
And um I've gotten to a point, I've realized this, I've gotten to a point, and I'm proud to say this.
I think that everybody gets to this point.
I see this in elders, man.
Because I see people in their 70s, their 80s.
Uh 90s, late 70s, that um those people that are walk these people who have so much tenure On this earth, and I see them just walking with the peace, just peace with the world.
I think they've realized that it's too exhausting to be frustrated with every little thing that happens.
It's not worth all of the energy of always being mad and always being critical and always having something to say, always having an opinion.
Everybody's screaming all the time.
Everybody's typing in all caps.
People will always have opinions.
There's always going to be hot button issues to debate, and you're never going to agree with everybody, right?
Even your own spouse you're not going to agree with on everything.
And and for as many issues that there are to debate, there's probably truths on on any side But Christians, man, we need to stay focused on what matters the most because I think that we have lost the focus of what matters the most in this culture of Christianity.
We need to be concerned with the gospel.
The gospel is the one thing that truly matters on this earth.
I think many Christians receive the gospel and then they don't do much with it after that.
We take Jesus, we put Jesus in our pocket, and we take him out when we come to church to worship.
But the gospel is what Jesus devoted his entire life to.
It's what the disciples devoted their lives to.
In the Old Testament, God used men to bring about the fruition of the good news of Jesus that brought salvation The gospel is one of the most important things that we don't talk about enough unless we're at church.
Can I tell somebody today that the gospel should be over your politics?
It should be over your cultural preferences.
Over your methods, over your traditions.
Now I know that some of these things can make their way into the gospel in a way that corrupts it or advances it.
That I understand.
And so when we're talking about Political issues that go against the moral uh laws established by God.
I understand the passion, but when I see Christians fighting about all kinds of things Justifying their beliefs with the gospel.
I wonder how many of us don't truly know what the gospel is.
And so I want to talk about that this morning in a very simple sermon that I've entitled What is Gospel?
What is Gospel?
I also think that this word was confirmed this week because somebody asked me that question.
They asked me, what is the gospel?
This person asked me to explain Jesus to him and what Jesus did for him on the cross.
But then he also said, I don't know how people in the world could be so evil.
Like there was a dissonance in this man's mind that could not reconcile the good news of Jesus Christ in the same world that there is so much hate and so much evil.
He could not understand it.
And I've spoken on the gospel many times.
I speak on it week after week.
I've preached plenty of sermons on salvation and on the cross.
I've got a very good understanding theologically on what the gospel is, but can I tell you that when he asked me what the what is the gospel, it took me a minute Took me a minute because I was thrown off guard.
Because it's not a question that I get that often.
And when I'm talking about the gospel on a basic level, I'm usually talking to a child.
And I'm explaining Jesus to an innocent child.
And I'm saying Jesus came to die for our sins to make the world a better place.
This is a man who's already seen the evils of this world.
So he says, what is what is the gospel?
I think like most of you might assume, I I assume that Pretty much every person in America has heard the good news of Jesus.
Everybody comes to church on Easter.
We've all been to church at some point.
We all know what The Christian faith is, and by this point, you've either accepted it and you're living by it, or you've rejected it and you're not living by it.
But he honestly asked me to explain Jesus And what did Jesus do for me?
And what does that mean for me today in this evil world?
The more I talked to him, I realized that this guy was wrestling with Two questions wrapped into one.
A question that really encompasses the full weight of the gospel.
He was asking, what is the gospel preached versus what is the gospel demonstrated?
Because what I hear preached isn't always what I see and experience, and what I see demonstrated isn't always what I hear preached.
And when I look at a divided church torn apart by politics and cultural wars, I I see these two aspects of the gospel many times missing each other.
I see these two aspects of the gospel that are not being treated with the same level of importance as the other.
And I think a very good working dish uh definition for the gospel is the one that Paul gives in Romans chapter 1 16 He says, For I'm not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation.
That's what the gospel is.
That's what the gospel does.
It is the power of God for the purpose of what?
Salvation.
The gospel is concerned with the soul, not your politics, not your cultural preferences Not your traditions, not your ministry style, not your leadership style, not your giftedness, not which church you go to, a Pentecostal church or a Baptist church.
The gospel is the power of God for salvation.
That's it.
There's also discipleship, there's also ministry, there's also uh um you know there's also Christian living, and all of those things are essential to the Christian faith, but you know what?
None of that is a gospel.
We got a pretty good discipling church here.
Discipleship on its own is not the gospel.
You can disciple somebody, but if they don't have Jesus.
Discipleship won't save them.
Judas walked with Jesus as a 12th disciple for three years.
Discipleship didn't save him.
Only Jesus could have done that, but he rejected him.
You can demonstrate your spiritual giftedness to somebody, and you can be impressive with the way that God uses you, but your gift doesn't save anybody.
Only Jesus does.
The gospel is the good news of Jesus Christ.
It is the power of God for salvation.
So if the gospel is so essential for eternal life, that means those of us who have received it need to preach it and demonstrate it.
Demonstrate it and preach it.
Preach it.
See or no?
Because demonstrating the gospel without proclaiming Jesus is just charity.
And preaching the gospel without demonstrating it is hypocrisy.
And hypocrisy gives people a bad taste of the gospel that's being preached, and charity never fills the void that only Jesus can fill.
We need.
The full gospel.
Still with me?
Maybe you're asking, Pastor, what why are we talking about false prophets and ravenous wolves?
What does that have to do with the gospel?
I think.
This passage represents a lot of what we're seeing today in our culture.
I think the enemy is working overtime to deceive believers, not the world.
He's deceiving believers.
On what the gospel is really supposed to look like.
I'll give you a perfect example.
Just this week, man.
Just this week.
Everybody blew up about these halftime shows.
Bad Bunny and Kid Rock.
Sounds like the start of a really bad joke.
Christians were debating who repres I I don't I don't know maybe maybe it's just what I'm seeing, but I saw many Christians debating on who represented the gospel more: Bad Bunny or Kid Rock Crazy World.
Crazy world we live in.
I heard people say Bad Bunny didn't say a word about Jesus, but he demonstrated what Jesus represents better than Kid Rock ever has.
He he spoke about love.
Love over hate.
He Spoke about including the foreigner and loving thy neighbor and all of that.
And then I heard people say, Well, Kid Rock preached Jesus and Bad Bonnie didn't even mention him.
And and this this is what I see a lot.
I don't know.
I don't know if it's just my algorithm.
I don't know.
But I see this a lot.
This is what I'm seeing I've got you know I've got Christian friends who are more conservative, I've got Christian friends who are more liberal.
I've I've worked with all of them.
Talking about Democrats and Republicans.
And the cr the criticism that I often hear from More liberal Christians, this is what they say.
They say all they do is talk about Jesus, but they're not showing Jesus.
It's all just talk.
It's all just Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.
Jesus, but there's no fruit.
And my conservative friends are like, but he literally said, Jesus, what more do you want?
And then I've got and then I've got a lot of liberal friends who Support great humanitarian causes and they're like, this is the work of Jesus.
We're being the hands and feet of Jesus.
And my conservative friends are like, yeah, but can you even say Jesus is Lord?
Or do you have to be politically correct?
And everybody's just barking at each other all the time.
And how about both are needed?
How about you can't have proclamation without demonstration?
And you can't have demonstration without proclamation.
That's the gospel.
That's the full weight of the gospel.
Preaching Jesus and showing what Jesus did.
Telling you, man, the devil is at work, hard at work, to convince the church that the gospel has got to be one way or the other.
And it's tearing apart the American church from within.
And and in this passage in Matthew, Jesus very subtly, you don't even recognize that is there, but very subtly touches on these two misunderstandings concerning the gospel.
See, Jesus is speaking about the end times.
He's talking about people who will claim to be Christian, but will be genuinely shaken by the fact that Jesus never even knew them.
Imagine that.
Imagine going your entire life thinking that you're in the right just to find out that Jesus never considered you his because the intentions of your heart were impure.
This is this is why, but this is a whole other sermon, but this is why we gotta be done with pride.
We gotta be done, we gotta squash pride, man.
We gotta kill pride because blind uh pride blinds us.
And makes us think that we're in the right.
It makes us think that our beliefs are the right beliefs.
And what I've got to say is the only thing that really matters.
And it makes us think that we're too holy and too gifted and too anointed and too called to be wrong.
Kill the pride.
Because I guarantee you this is the group that Jesus is talking to, full of pride.
And there's two allusions to the types of people that I'm talking about.
There are the people who proclaim Jesus.
They say, Lord, Lord.
Lord, Lord.
So these might be the people who preach Jesus.
They might have a platform.
People listen to them.
They've got something to say.
But but you can't, there's they're missing something.
Have you ever seen somebody like that?
They say all the right stuff.
They say all the right names.
They sing all the right songs.
Jesus be the name, right?
You can't point, there's something missing.
They don't have any fruit.
They have no compassion.
They speak with everybody else with hate.
They're charlatans.
They sound eloquent.
They sound wise, but the Spirit of God is not in them.
And they're saying Jesus, but they're not showing Jesus.
And then you've got those who do mighty works in his name.
These are those who appear to be loving by their work.
By what they call ministry.
These are those who, by their giftedness, listen, somebody, by their giftedness look like they've got fruit because it seems like the Spirit is working through them.
People come to them and they cast out demons and they do many mighty signs and wonders in his name, but they're still missing something.
And it's to these groups of people, both those who proclaim and those who do, that Jesus says, depart from me, I never knew either of you.
But this deceives Christians.
If if he sounds like a Christian, he he must be one.
If he does ministry, he must be a Christian.
We go by looks and sound to determine fruit.
And and the devil's read the same Bible we've read, bro.
Right?
He he he's he he knows that we need to see good fruit, and so he's gotten really good at making bad fruit look good.
And and if he says the right things, he must be a man of God.
And if she does the right things, she must have the right heart.
Can I tell somebody today that God does not care about the signs and wonders, the works, and the eloquent words?
That you do, that you have, those are not the things that Jesus is looking for.
That's not fruit.
Fruit doesn't come from the mouth, it doesn't come from actions.
Those are those become symptoms of good fruit.
But symptoms can be faked.
So I I can say all the right things and you're like, man, that brother's got some fruit.
Look at out look at them serving people.
That brother's got some fruit.
Symptoms can be faked.
So so Jesus looks at the heart.
Jesus bites into that fruit to it to expose what others cannot see.
And I believe that the Spirit of God is biting into some fruit today to search out the true intentions of the people who claim to be godly.
This is why.
This is why we gotta stop being so obsessed with calling, man.
Calling If I ever preach a sermon about calling again, tell me, Pastor, you said you weren't going to do that.
Because we we we attach we attach our identity to our calling.
And that's that's incorrect.
I'm not called to be a pastor.
I'm called to pastor.
I'm not called to be a preacher.
I'm called to preach.
What I'm called to be is a son of God.
That's what I'm called to be.
You're called to be a daughter of God.
We are called to be children of God, nothing else.
Because when you think you're called to pastor, well what happens to your call as a husband?
I'm called to be a son.
You might be called to be a son or a daughter.
And a good son and a good daughter will never try to steal the glory from their father.
A good son and a good daughter will give glory to the Father even if they never take the credit for it.
And so Jesus says, beware of the false prophets.
Who look like sheep, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.
You know what that word ravenous means?
It means hungry.
They're hungry.
The Greek word is harpax.
It's associated with robbery, swindling, and greed.
These are people who are hungry for their own glory.
Is that not the enemy at work in him?
Does not the enemy desire to steal God's glory?
Did not the enemy fall from his place in heaven because he was trying to elevate himself to God?
And you see, the enemy's got no shame.
He's got no shame in using a platform that points to God.
Because as that glory is going up to God, he can steal some of it on the way up.
And these are the people who God will confront on the day of judgment because they are masters at deception.
They're so good they've even deceived themselves.
These are people who never had a true heart for the will of God.
You know, sometimes I think we need to pause.
We need to pause and we need to ask ourselves, do I still have a heart for God?
Am I still doing this because I truly love the Lord and love his church?
Why am I doing ministry?
Why am I still coming to church?
We sometimes we have to pause, we have to check our hearts. the intentions of our hearts.
Because naturally the intentions of our hearts are evil.
And so maybe you want to do ministry because you got an agenda.
Maybe you want to do ministry because you want to be seen.
Maybe you want to be a pastor because you're tired of being under somebody else's authority.
Maybe maybe there's a different agenda there.
So sometimes we got to check our heart.
God, why am I here?
Why am I doing this?
Am I still in it for you?
On the day of judgment, I imagine these people will come in all shapes and sizes.
And beliefs and backgrounds.
And I pray that none of y'all are here to face that judgment.
I hope that none of us.
Are here to face his judgment.
These are gonna be people who have maybe they had a different agenda than God's people who just wanted to be used um uh for personal gain, people who manipulated the gospel for their own sake, people who wanted to be elevated in ministry without elevating God.
These could be people, listen to this one because this one's true.
These could be people who love people but don't love God.
These could be people who say they love God but don't love people.
We could be here all day talking about the conditions of these people's hearts, but one thing we can say for certain is that they never understood or accepted the full gospel of Jesus.
They used it.
They use the gospel to advance their purposes.
This is why the gospel needs to be preached and the gospel needs to be demonstrated.
Gotta do both, man.
Paul said it better than I ever could regarding the gospel preached in Romans 10.
He says, For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
How then will they call on him in whom they've not believed?
How are they to believe in him of whom they've never heard?
How are they to hear without someone preaching?
And how are they to preach unless they are sent, as it is written, how beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news.
The name of Jesus needs to be proclaimed.
Can I tell you nobody gets into heaven because you gave them a free meal?
Nobody gets into heaven because you gave them clothes Nobody gets into heaven because you did a good deed for them.
I'm not saying don't do that.
We're gonna talk about the importance of that in a second.
But there are Christians who act like going out into the community to be the hands and feet of Jesus saves the community.
Maybe it saves them from poverty, maybe it saves them from hunger and all these other horrible things, but only the name of Jesus can save a person's soul.
Can we acknowledge that?
I'm not saying that it's that that the church should not be deployed.
We absolutely should.
But when we're talking about souls, when we're talking about heaven, when we're talking about hell, it's only Jesus who saves.
And how will they know the good work that you are doing is in the name of Jesus without the preaching of the gospel?
Pastor, they know I'm a good person.
Do they know Jesus?
I don't care if they know you.
Nobody's gonna get into heaven because they know you.
People at work they they see that I do good.
Do they know Jesus?
Have you have you have you have you spoken Jesus?
I'm not I'm not telling you to beat them with the Bible.
I'm just saying have have they seen the good works in you come from this person named Jesus who saved you?
Do they know that?
This is a hard word.
And some of you are like, nah, I ain't I received that because we do live in a world of political correctness, and you can't do certain things and you can't say certain names in certain places.
And I'm not I'm not telling you to go and break the law or anything, okay?
But I'm telling you the importance of preaching the name of Jesus.
This is what killed the disciples.
This is what got them persecuted.
Many of them executed.
Only Jesus who can save.
In Acts 6, we read this.
We read now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the hellness arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.
And the 12 summoned the full number of the disciples and said, It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.
If that happened today, this would be a whole thing.
You think you're too holy to serve tables?
Where's your heart for the least of these?
And and and what would happen is one group of Christians would leave the church and go to another church.
And the other group would stay and be like, oh, we just we gotta get ahead of this, right?
That's how petty the churches become.
But the disciples, they come up with a solution They say, therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the spirit of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty, but we will devote ourselves to the prayer and to the ministry of the word.
The disciples recognized the importance of serving these widows.
We can't just not serve them.
We're the church.
But not preaching Jesus was never an option.
So we're gonna go out and we're gonna preach Jesus, and we probably won't stay long in each city.
And so we're not going to be there long enough for them to see the gospel demonstrated.
So we're going to need there to be a church there full of men and women of faith who can demonstrate everything that we preached when we left.
And together that is the power of God for salvation.
Are y'all with me today?
I don't I don't feel it.
I'm feeling a little hot this morning.
Everybody got offended when I said the Democrats and Republicans.
That's the gospel priest.
Now let's talk about the gospel demonstrated.
I'm almost done.
Matthew 25.
This is what Jesus says.
When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.
Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people from one another as a shepherd separ separates the sheep from the goats.
And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on his left.
And the king will say to those on his right, Come, you who are blessed by my father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
For I was hungry, and you gave me food.
I was thirsty and you gave me drink.
I was a stranger and you welcomed me.
I was naked and you clothed me.
I was sick and you visited me.
I was in prison and you came to me.
Then the righteous will answer him, saying, Lord.
When did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty, and give you drink?
And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked, and clothe you?
And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?
And the king will answer them, truly I say to you, as you did to one of the least of these.
You did to me.
See, earlier I said that giving somebody a meal is not going to save that person's soul.
Visiting them in prison is not going to save that person's soul if Jesus is not also a part of that conversation, makes his way into their heart.
But this type of work of demonstrating the gospel, listen somebody, listen, listen, listen, listen.
This is essential to our faith.
Demonstrating the gospel is something we will be held accountable for.
See, we we this is where the world can tie in all of the good things into a name.
All the love that you show, all the compassion that you have, all the transformation, all the hope, it ties into a name that is proclaimed.
Jesus.
And so can we just can we just go back to what matters, man?
Can we just focus on our fruit to produce a pure and satisfying fruit that the Spirit is pleased with That isn't a shame to preach and to demonstrate the power of God for salvation.
Can we be most concerned with the souls?
That are hearing us and watching us handle the most precious word of God?
Can we treat it?
Can can can we treat it as if it is the word of God?
That when we preach it, we live by it, but when we live by it, we also credit the name of Jesus.
Can we do that again?
Can we stop trying to sound spiritual without the spirit being in us?
Can we stop trying to manufacture things for the sake of emotion?
Can we preach the gospel?
Can we live out the gospel so that the world that needs Jesus can begin to see him again So that the world that needs Jesus can recognize Jesus and his disciples.
Can we go back to the essentials of our faith?
Can we stop chasing gifts without chasing souls?
Can we do that I I get I get I get prayer requests all the time and I and I I I I was like this once so I get it But the prayer is like, Pastor, I need you.
Can you pray that that I catch this gift?
Because God wants to use me in this.
And I want God to use you in that.
But man, if you have a heart for the people of God, God is gonna equip you faster than you can even say amen But we're so we we just we we're so concerned with with ourselves sometimes we're we're so concerned with our own agenda rather than just preaching Jesus and demonstrating Jesus So I think back to that conversation.
This man who I know has heard Jesus.
This man who I know has gone to church before Still not understanding the gospel because what he hears he doesn't see.
And sometimes what he sees doesn't match what he hears This is simply a call this morning for us to do better.
That's it.
Souls.
Souls are still being lost, man.
Souls are still being lost lost i i know we i know we celebrate every every single time that hell lost and up are the one we celebrate i celebrate i celebrate At the same time, souls are still being lost.
While many of us are more concerned with earthly kingdom things than kingdom things.
Jesus is coming back soon.
Don't forget it.
I know that's not a sermon that we preach every single Sunday, but he's coming back soon And so we've got no time to waste.
We have to render our hearts to God.
We have to care about the souls.
That he sent his one and only son for, to die for, to give life to.
What is the gospel?
It is the power of God for salvation.
And we get, somebody say, I get the privilege to preach it and to demonstrate it.
What a privilege.
That's not just my privilege.
Listen, listen.
This is not just my privilege as a preacher, as a pastor.
It is my honor, but it is also yours as a believer, as someone who has heard the good news and received the good news. and has been transformed by it.
It's your privilege.
So my challenge to you You ready?
This is practical.
Do both.
Some of y'all are like I look like a Christian, Pastor.
Do both.
Don't be afraid to talk about Jesus with your non-Christian friends.
Stop being afraid of what they might say, of what they might think, of how they might disagree with you.
Some of them are gonna disagree with you.
That's all good.
Just preach Jesus.
I'm not telling you to, I'm not telling, again, I'm not telling you to beat him down with the Bible.
I'm just saying, hey, the reason for the hope The reason that I've got joy, the reason that I've got some freedom is because of my Savior and my Lord Jesus Christ.
That's his name.
You want to know the source?
That's his name.
Jesus.
Jesus be the name.
Oh man.
Let me get the other ones.
Let me get the other ones.
Those of you who all you do is preach, preach, preach, preach, preach, preach, preach, preach, preach.
You know who you are?
You weaponize the gospel to release your anger.
You weaponize the gospel to point fingers of people that you don't like.
And the thems in your life Preach it, but demonstrate it.
Live it.
Let him see the compassion.
Let him see the love.
Let him see the gentleness.
Let him see the kindness.
Let him see the hope.
The gospel's powerful.
It is the power of God for salvation.
Can we stand?
Thank you, Jesus.
I'm gonna have the prayer team come up.
I don't have any specific altar call this morning.
If you need prayer.
I will invite you for prayer in just a moment.
But I want to pray over everybody, just us as a body, if you would receive this.
Heavenly Father.
God forgive us Lord.
Because sometimes we misuse, mishandle.
The most beautiful gift.
Ever given to us your good news.
Lord, I pray, Father God That you would convict our hearts, Father God.
That we would proclaim the name Jesus and also demonstrate the name Jesus.
I pray my God that we would be preachers and we would be doers of your word, Father.
I pray, Father God, that the world would see what's different about us, my God.
I pray, Father God, that when they get close enough, they will be able to tell that the fruit is good, God Because your spirit works in us, Father God.
Lord, I pray right now that you transform every misaligned agenda.
