<v Speaker 1>guesses what's going on in her mind and looks at

<v Speaker 1>her with pure devotion and then shakes his head and

<v Speaker 1>says he needs to ask her something. Did she ever

<v Speaker 1>feel like he took advantage of her? And she says no,

<v Speaker 1>of course not, and he's like, okay, because I've not

<v Speaker 1>been a good man and I want to be a

<v Speaker 1>good man for.

<v Speaker 2>You, a better man, sweetie.

<v Speaker 1>He tells her that before her dad died, he used

<v Speaker 1>to look up at her through her window and just

<v Speaker 1>think to himself how beautiful she was, like an angel,

<v Speaker 1>and he still doesn't understand why she chose him that day.

<v Speaker 1>She says she knew he'd never force anything on her,

<v Speaker 1>and with him she could actually have some semblance of freedom.

<v Speaker 1>She knew all of this partly because of what her

<v Speaker 1>dad told her, and partly because she used to watch

<v Speaker 1>him when he went down by the river. She could

<v Speaker 1>see how tired he was and how much this new

<v Speaker 1>world exhausted him. The bad people out there love this

<v Speaker 1>new reality, but not him. She asks if he would

<v Speaker 1>have forced himself on her the first night if she

<v Speaker 1>hadn't offered, and he's appalled and says no, of course not,

<v Speaker 1>and she's like, see, I'm safe with you. She chose

<v Speaker 1>him that day, and she's choosing him now and she'll

<v Speaker 1>always choose him. He kisses her deeply and tells her

<v Speaker 1>how badly he just wants to do right by her,

<v Speaker 1>and she promises him that he is.

<v Speaker 2>Oh.

<v Speaker 1>They snuggle a little bit longer, and then he tells

<v Speaker 1>her he has to take a few guys up north

<v Speaker 1>to scope out some troublemakers and make sure they aren't

<v Speaker 1>planning any funny business. He tells her it'll probably be fine,

<v Speaker 1>but he'd feel more comfortable with her staying up in

<v Speaker 1>the room while he's gone. This pisses her off, though,

<v Speaker 1>and she's like, I'd be the only one stuck in

<v Speaker 1>their room and I was trapped in her room for

<v Speaker 1>years before I got here.

<v Speaker 2>I do not want to do that.

<v Speaker 1>He tells her it's his job to take care of

<v Speaker 1>her and she's got to let him do that. But

<v Speaker 1>she's like, I do let you do that, but I'm

<v Speaker 1>not some princess to be locked in a tower, and

<v Speaker 1>you aren't going to imprison me when you're not here.

<v Speaker 1>He softens and tells her it's exhausting trying to keep

<v Speaker 1>her safe in this shitty world, and she's like, well,

<v Speaker 1>I'm sorry, I'm such a burden to you.

<v Speaker 2>Oh, don't do that. Oh she's doing it. Oh she's

<v Speaker 2>doing it. She's full on.

<v Speaker 1>He tells her that's not what he meant. She knows it,

<v Speaker 1>but she's already mad, and she tells him she's not

<v Speaker 1>going down to the river with him today since she's

<v Speaker 1>to be locked up like Rapunzel. He just groans and

<v Speaker 1>stands up to walk toward the door. She calls his name,

<v Speaker 1>but he walks out anyway.

<v Speaker 2>Guys work it out their first fight.

<v Speaker 1>She cries for a little bit and then gets herself

<v Speaker 1>together to do some yoga, telling herself couples fight, this

<v Speaker 1>is totally normal and they'll talk it out later. She

<v Speaker 1>gets out there earlier than normal and starts doing her

<v Speaker 1>stretches when none other than Sick pops out from behind

<v Speaker 1>a tree. He tells her that Levi is hurt and

<v Speaker 1>needs her. She's confused and terrified, so she follows him

<v Speaker 1>as he leads her to the driveway where her dad's

<v Speaker 1>truck is parked, and then he punches her square in

<v Speaker 1>the face.

<v Speaker 2>Ah. I knew that guy was going to come back around.

<v Speaker 1>He zip ties her arms, gags her, and starts to

<v Speaker 1>drag her toward the truck, but then the shock wears

<v Speaker 1>off and she starts fighting back. He punches her in

<v Speaker 1>the stomach this time, and then zip ties her feet

<v Speaker 1>and throws her in anyway, she's freaking out as Sick

<v Speaker 1>starts driving them about how Levi is down at the

<v Speaker 1>river and he's going to come back and thinks she

<v Speaker 1>took her dad's truck and left because of their fight.

<v Speaker 1>She gets the gag out of her mouth and asks

<v Speaker 1>Sick why he's doing this. He tells her nobody actually

<v Speaker 1>likes him here and he'll bring her up north to

<v Speaker 1>a gang of guys he's been talking to. These guys

<v Speaker 1>actually take what they want, and Levi won't be able

<v Speaker 1>to get to them. And that's a gang of ruffians

<v Speaker 1>that Levi was talking about earlier that might cause problems. No,

<v Speaker 1>he says, Levi's been acting like he's king of the

<v Speaker 1>castle ever since Haley got here, and Sick wants him

<v Speaker 1>knocked down a few pegs. Then he tells her that

<v Speaker 1>before they get to the guys up north, he's planning

<v Speaker 1>on having a little fun with her to see what

<v Speaker 1>all the fuss is about, And now Haley feels like

<v Speaker 1>she's gonna vomit. She knows there's no way Levi will

<v Speaker 1>find her in time, and she's gonna have to save herself.

<v Speaker 1>She uses her superior yoga flexibility and she wriggles herself

<v Speaker 1>into a position to bring her feet down hard, which

<v Speaker 1>causes him to lose control of the truck and crash

<v Speaker 1>into a ditch. She does her best to brace herself

<v Speaker 1>for the impact, but she hits her head hard and

<v Speaker 1>everything goes dark. The next thing she hears is Levi

<v Speaker 1>begging her to wake up. He picks her up and

<v Speaker 1>gets her out of the total truck, and she feels

<v Speaker 1>nothing but pain.

<v Speaker 4>It's all right, You're gonna be all right. I'm so sorry, sweetheart.

<v Speaker 4>I never should have left you that way. All I

<v Speaker 4>wanted was to be a good man for you, and

<v Speaker 4>I acted like a shitty one instead. I'm so fucking sorry.

<v Speaker 4>But you don't get to die. I'm not gonna let

<v Speaker 4>it happen. I'm not living in this goddamn world without you, Pookies.

<v Speaker 2>I know.

<v Speaker 1>She manages to say his name, and he tells her

<v Speaker 1>he's so sorry as he checks her body over for injuries.

<v Speaker 1>She tells him he's not shitty and she's sorry for

<v Speaker 1>this morning, and he says he's sorry too. She reorients

<v Speaker 1>herself and tells him she thinks she just got bruised up,

<v Speaker 1>and the only real injury she thinks she has is

<v Speaker 1>the one on her head. The truck is still in

<v Speaker 1>the ditch and she can see Sick dead in the

<v Speaker 1>driver's seat. He's super bloody, and she doesn't know if

<v Speaker 1>the crash killed him or if Levi did. Either way

<v Speaker 1>she doesn't care.

<v Speaker 2>Yeah bye, you won't be missed.

<v Speaker 1>She asks Levi to get him out of her dad's truck.

<v Speaker 1>She doesn't want his nasty blood all over it. Levi

<v Speaker 1>walks over and throws the body into some weeds like

<v Speaker 1>a pile of trash. He tells her he thinks the

<v Speaker 1>guys can probably fix it back up to be drivable.

<v Speaker 1>Then he breaks and collapses on the ground, telling her

<v Speaker 1>how he was so scared when he first found her missing,

<v Speaker 1>thinking it was too late and that she was dead.

<v Speaker 1>He didn't even get halfway to the river this morning

<v Speaker 1>before he turned around to go back and apologize to her,

<v Speaker 1>and he realized she was gone. He tells her that

<v Speaker 1>her freedom and happiness is more important than his comfort,

<v Speaker 1>and he's not going to lock her away just to

<v Speaker 1>keep himself comfortable. She throws herself into his arms, and

<v Speaker 1>he tells her he's going to keep her happy and

<v Speaker 1>give her everything she wants, no matter how hard it is.

<v Speaker 1>but we haven't lost everything, and we have so much

<v Speaker 1>the year after, and then the year after that. One day,

<v Speaker 1>those trees are all going to be blooming again. The

<v Speaker 1>whole world will be blooming. So this apple is hope.

<v Speaker 4>apple to his mouth and takes a bite.

<v Speaker 1>with nothing but love in his eyes, and they get

<v Speaker 1>married in his family's apple orchard.
