00:00:00
Speaker 1: This weekend, there are actual premiership points on the line. Opening Round is finally here. It's an Eastern Seaboard Smorgas Board of Football and for the first time in the season soft launch, the AFL has thrown us a game in Melbourne. There's a little opening Round treat I'm ed Burke. I'm joined for the third consecutive week by Lauren Wood and Josh Barnes. We're trying to get Josh out of the country, but unfortunately for the moment, is stuck here as he prepares to go and cover the Winter Paralympics.
00:00:23
Speaker 2: Has there been any disruptions in travel plans around the world And I haven't really heard anything this week or any big news or anything.
00:00:29
Speaker 1: There's a big going on. We possibly don't have time to touch on that. Lauren, that's right.
00:00:33
Speaker 3: We're doing our very best to keep a premiership team together. I think you don't break up a winning formula.
00:00:38
Speaker 4: Go back to back like all the great team That's right.
00:00:41
Speaker 1: We don't need to start off on a bit of a sad note because just as we're going into record, we got the news out of Western Australia that the legendary sports commentator Dennis committee has passed away age seventy six. A remarkable career and our thoughts are with his family and is many many friends that he's made along the journey in the sports industry. Just a tremendous broadcaster and difficult news today.
00:01:01
Speaker 5: It is it is a little bit.
00:01:02
Speaker 3: I mean, he's a great football personality as we know, and he's really been the soundtrack to so many incredible moments that we've.
00:01:09
Speaker 5: Enjoyed over the years.
00:01:11
Speaker 3: Was always so generous with his time in the press box as we were lining up for party pies, as most of the journos have become known to do.
00:01:19
Speaker 5: But this one really flawed me.
00:01:21
Speaker 4: Yeah, it was a real shock when the news came through this morning.
00:01:26
Speaker 2: I think probably for not just our generation, but generations passed and beyond that. He's probably a voice of our lifetime, really a voice of my childhood planning playing all those video.
00:01:35
Speaker 4: Games that he was part of.
00:01:36
Speaker 2: And then obviously he was always on the footy coverage, one of the great the best tonsoles in the business and certainly the best, my favorite commentator and I think the best we've ever.
00:01:46
Speaker 6: Hadroy accomplished footballer as well.
00:01:48
Speaker 1: He had a career for West Perth in the Waffle played a few Footscraaree reserves games. I think when his work brought him over here to Melbourne and then he went back and coached West Perth while he was mostly working in cricket commentary with the ABSC so incredibly round cre Have you got a favorite Dennis line, Laurena committism.
00:02:03
Speaker 5: It's hard to.
00:02:03
Speaker 3: Pick one, isn't it. It's and it spans across different sports too. I know that the four by one hundred meter relay at the Sydney Olympics stands out. Thorpe goes in right at the end with that famous duel with Gary Hall Junior.
00:02:16
Speaker 5: Got about boots sworn, great bosover, hurlig plm, Bripe, pop job, Clod pop, it's playing your win.
00:02:28
Speaker 4: Clem is smoking behind the blocks.
00:02:29
Speaker 5: That's all.
00:02:30
Speaker 1: Yeah, it was.
00:02:31
Speaker 3: It was an incredible, incredible call from Dennis and obviously an incredible win for Australia. So it was the perfect formula there. I'm going to struggle to get this one out, but always a favorite for me was liber goes into the pack optimistically, comes out misty optically was a real.
00:02:48
Speaker 5: Standout for me.
00:02:49
Speaker 3: Just his ability to roll those off the tongue, and unfortunately for my team, it was a pretty dire moment. Of course, that smother in the goal square, but he snuck up on him like a librarian is what famously gets shown on the cliffs, but it was almost what followed.
00:03:04
Speaker 5: He never heard him, no surprise.
00:03:06
Speaker 3: Everyone else in the library was shouting because it was just erupted through the MCG.
00:03:10
Speaker 5: So he just had the words for every moment, didn't he Bunzy, what's yours?
00:03:13
Speaker 4: Yeah? I think he sure probably owes him a lot of royalty.
00:03:15
Speaker 2: He's got him a toyota out of that, so where would he be without that line itself. One of my favorite comittee is is they've got a good run on AFOL two thousand and four was Adam who's a terrific young player bad scrabble hand the ones I liked this Not really a committee is him. But one of my favorite calls of his was just a small line was the here comes buddy when he wheeled around on the left foot in the pocket in the twenty eleven prelim. That was just such a quick one that he was able to throw in and even umpire Curvey taking a Mark Kerry by name Kerry by nature. I thought it was a good one when you couldn't even plan any of that.
00:03:47
Speaker 4: Sort of stuff. No one can plan for an umpire taking a mark. But that was Dennis at his absolute best.
00:03:51
Speaker 1: Favorite of mine as a Hawthorne fan in that two thousand and eight Grand Final. Got home, watched the replay after and as Lance Franklin's loading up for a big goal from the fifty meter arch, he said he can light of fire under himself. It was just a goosebumps moment for Hawks fans. It was inspirational. And yeah, his generosity. I don't know, you get paid for the video games, but the amount of time he committed to saying every player's name, all those little lines that got used, you know, quite comedically sometimes in timings in the game. But the whole generation of kids have grown up hearing his voice in that video game as well as out on the actual field.
00:04:21
Speaker 6: It's an incredible contribution.
00:04:23
Speaker 1: Now thoughts with Dennis's family and friends now opening round five games this year, looks like our Queensland games are going ahead at this stage.
00:04:32
Speaker 6: But it's a bit of weather. There's a bit of weather about once again, Lauren.
00:04:35
Speaker 3: Yeah, the Unders the unders on the points scored could be on there responsibly, of course, but rain again, and I did see someone on X earlier suggests that this really is Mother Nature's way.
00:04:48
Speaker 5: Of telling us that footy is starting to early.
00:04:51
Speaker 3: It feels ridiculously early to be doing this, but unfortunately Southeast Queensland, he's facing a del Usigana course twelve months on after cyclone, Alfred, I don't think we're quite in cyclone territory this year.
00:05:03
Speaker 5: You've been across things with a bureau. But it's gonna be heavy, no doubt.
00:05:06
Speaker 1: Latest weather data are pulled says that there's a thirty percent chance of the first tropical cyclone of the season forming off South qu queens On this weekend, which is remarkable coincidence given what happened last year. And I'm told that the cyclone will either be called a Narel or I wasn't told that it's it's fact.
00:05:24
Speaker 6: Norell.
00:05:24
Speaker 1: There's one off Wa that's brewing and if that forms, it will be called Narel and the Queensland might will be called Owen, but they both might not happen.
00:05:31
Speaker 3: So whoever gets in first, obviously is that I mean, if you're Andrew Dyllon sitting in Sydney right now preparing to launch the season.
00:05:37
Speaker 5: You'd have to be wondering if you've smashed.
00:05:39
Speaker 3: A mirror, or walked under a ladder or killed a black cat somewhere along the line. Surely they couldn't be thinking, you know what, this could not be happening again. And as much as everyone says just start the opening opening round of the season, with all of the games around the country, you know, he's someone somewhere trying to tell us that.
00:05:59
Speaker 1: Remard from our age that it's still maybe cricket season. Maybe we've just crept up a little early now. Sydney Carlton's the first game on Thursday night and the teams for that will come out tonight. Michael Voss actually offered up a fair bit of news on Tuesday morning. You confirmed two debutantes before he had to, so that's something that he was very close to his chest with selection last year. But he's locked in Jagger Smith and Harry Dean. We're also getting word that Campbell Chesser has been told he'll make his club debut as well. The West Coast recruit so interesting teams there and I just wanted to touch on Marc Murphy's comments on the ABSC about Charlie Kerno and that the heat that he expects from Carton players towards kernoz he makes his Swan's debut.
00:06:36
Speaker 6: Do we think that would be genuinely fierce?
00:06:39
Speaker 2: I think potentially, But I don't think Charlie's much of a fighter, is he? I don't know if it's coming back the other way. It feels to me like one of those things where if you get a chance to run pass him and give him one, maybe, but I'm not sure he's going to be buying into it too much and being a full forward, he's not going to be in the player that much. So I don't know on a scale to genuine beat ups to Luke Hodge kissing Buddy Franklin, where are.
00:06:58
Speaker 4: We going to land?
00:06:59
Speaker 5: Do you think, well, we might have a little bit of cheek in s I quite like that.
00:07:02
Speaker 3: I think Charlie's interviews, particularly one that he did with Lockie McCurdy on Code Sports just a few weeks ago, that were really quite pointed about Carlton. I think a lot of that stuff didn't land all that nicely. Inside the four Walls, as they say, a Icon Park, So I reckon there'll be a little bit of an edge to it, combined with the fact that in the AFL clearly haven't missed when it comes to scheduling. But I've been out of a few training sessions recently and talking to players just you know, and club people around about whether they think it should be a whole round, whether they think opening reserv Every player I've spoken to is absolutely fanging to get out there this weekend and wishes they were part of it. The ones that are playing just cannot wait to get out there and play the real stuff. And I reckon that adds another layer to it as well, is that they're already going to be so fizzed up just to be out there playing. You look across Charlie Kerno is there in a Sydney jumper. I think it's all going to combine absolutely beautifully.
00:07:56
Speaker 5: The AFL.
00:07:57
Speaker 3: It's an interesting one because we know that conversation turned to with Hinckley and Jack innovn you fixture this game.
00:08:03
Speaker 5: You want the entertainment, you want the theater.
00:08:06
Speaker 3: But then now they're going to you know, dish out fines for anything that might happen, but then use it on the promos like it's sort of this chicken and egg scenario, isn't it.
00:08:14
Speaker 5: Yeah.
00:08:14
Speaker 1: Yeah, we've seen that they've potentially loosened up some of the gut punch rules, Josh, and that might be something that gets tested straight away this week.
00:08:22
Speaker 4: Yeah.
00:08:22
Speaker 2: Well, I think we're always in a vicious cycle with the gut punches. We crack down on them one year, and then one person gets suspended. We think that's ridiculous, and then we loosen the laws, and then two years later we crack down and again we think it's unfair that people are getting gut punched. So I'll be interested to watch how it goes throughout the year, whether we will have that one case where it gets arguing in the trail and it's an open palm or whatever it is, and then suddenly they get off and then the rules are sort of thrown out. Anyway, it's going to be very very closely watched. There's always sort of a perpetrator and opening around. As you said, a lot of people are players are more fired up now than they sort of when you get to right round five six er in the swing of things.
00:08:55
Speaker 4: So there will be a lot of energy out in the field, I think is the best way to put it.
00:09:00
Speaker 1: The other selection news out of Sydney Carton is the Swan's coach Dean Cox, has confirmed that Jayce Wrong and Mal Roses will also make their club deboos alongside Charlie Kerner. So and you look Swan side their Gold Coast along is the next game on Friday night. And we've had Damien Hardwick this morning just maybe cooling slightly on a debut for Jamara jugl Hagen. Jed Walter was suspended, so there is a spot there in the forward line, but I think the feeling is that he might not be quite ready. He didn't rule out a daboo, but he's just sort of poured cold water on the prospect a bit.
00:09:27
Speaker 5: Well.
00:09:27
Speaker 3: They've obviously confirmed Zeke Yulan to make his debut, so they obviously weren't hesitant in getting some of the team news out there. And whether that is, you know, another little test for Jamara, I'm not too sure about whether they make him wait right until the very last minute for him to find out.
00:09:43
Speaker 5: I'm not too sure.
00:09:43
Speaker 3: But it is interesting, as you say with Jed out, I think all of us assume with everything that We've been hearing out of Gold Coast all summer about how well Jamara has been doing and training. But we know Damien like he's so experienced with this sort of thing, not only on the field but also between the years that you know it could all be part of the master plan.
00:10:02
Speaker 1: That'd be fascinating to see what unfolds there. And as always, the flow of information out of Geelong has been typically tightly held. There was a trio of fitness tests that we're aware of Grin Myers, Bailey Smith and Jeremy Cameron. But now it seems that out of the three of them, the one who's actually in the most doubt is Patrick Dangerfield. It wasn't in the three, wasn't on the injury list on Tuesday night, but said last night that he's got a bit of a calf. Can actually, Josh for our viewers, can you just point out on the Patrick danger.
00:10:30
Speaker 4: I think we have to turn them around and point to the lower leg area. Is it right or left leg? Do we know?
00:10:35
Speaker 6: No?
00:10:35
Speaker 3: I don't think we've got that much clarity. For the bloke who wasn't listed on the injury.
00:10:39
Speaker 2: It can't be pre round zero and we've already got an injury list controversy with Geelong.
00:10:44
Speaker 4: It can't be what it had to be.
00:10:46
Speaker 2: We march March for today when we record this, and they've already screwed us around with the injury lists.
00:10:51
Speaker 5: Cheeky, isn't it.
00:10:52
Speaker 3: I know there were clubs were staunchly reminded at the start of last season that there was to be more clarity on this sort of thing, not only for our super coaches, but everyone just likes to know what's going on. They had a five pm Tuesday deadline. I've gone to Geelong today, no response at time of filming to just clarify why Patrick wasn't on that list at five o'clock. But he'll have a fitness test for want of a bit of term. They're saying he's got to get through the session on Thursday, So tomorrow is the time we sit here in film as to whether he'll go. But you would think, wouldn't you with a player A of his caliber, b of his age? And that's not to be detrimental to Patrick at all, it's just reality. If it's a line ball call, you'd probably lean towards a no.
00:11:33
Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, definitely, I don't think Geelong would risk. Even the flight up there is a bit of a risk. I think the more time he can spend in Victoria this year, I think it's going to be better for Gelng in the long run. Obviously he had that huge preliminary final to get Gelong into the Grand Final, but then didn't do a whole lot of the week after, So you're going to have to measure out the efforts, which isn't easy on the field. Whenever he goes anywhere near the ball, it's one hundred percent efforts. So Geelong has to get in his way a little bit here, and I think a later start to the season makes so much sense for him and for the team, and particularly when Gelong don't like taking risk. Chriscott again said this week he prefers not to risk any players who are injured. It has to be somewhat of a risk with Grime, Myers, Bailey Smith and Jeremy Cammen all under clouds to play all of them, and then Dangerfield as well.
00:12:13
Speaker 4: I don't think they really like that risk profile.
00:12:15
Speaker 1: It seems that this stage like they're going to be paying for a few extra tickets on that flight up to the Gold Coast. He's going to need to bring twenty seven or twenty eight players at this stage.
00:12:22
Speaker 2: Especially j Polkinghorne measuring himself out for a seat, which and a late change.
00:12:27
Speaker 5: Never, I couldn't tell, I would never.
00:12:31
Speaker 1: Could not tell GWS versus Hawthorne the third game of the round. Now Finn Callahan might play for the Giants after having some hip flex or issues over the preseason. Initially, with the devastating injury to Tom Green about a month ago, it looked like the Giants were going to come in with a heavily undermanned midfield, but now it seems Hawthorne probably the ones who are a bit more understrength than there will days out Cam McKenzie's out with concussion. They did get a reprieve though last night Jihan Yukam got off at the tribunal. He had a one week ban ahead of him. Hawthorne chal lenged interesting argument made by the Hawks, which was successful.
00:13:04
Speaker 6: In the end.
00:13:04
Speaker 5: It was it was It was interesting, wasn't it.
00:13:07
Speaker 3: I Mean their owners almost put back on Ed Richards right that that maybe he should have dropped the ball to protect him.
00:13:13
Speaker 5: Sorry does not fly.
00:13:16
Speaker 3: I don't know how it is a little bit of victim blaming, isn't it. I mean, I think he was lucky in the fact clearly that Ed Richards played out the game.
00:13:24
Speaker 5: But we can't be having that.
00:13:25
Speaker 6: Is it right for the tackler to hold that threat over the plant, drop the ball or in the ground.
00:13:30
Speaker 5: I just think duty of care onnus on which player.
00:13:33
Speaker 3: I mean, you can use any kind of terminology that you want, but it cannot possibly be on Richards to have to drop the ball to protect himself with while he's got these other armpim can it.
00:13:42
Speaker 4: No, it can't be.
00:13:43
Speaker 2: And like, if you're going down this tangent, you could have claimed that he tried to balance his fall with the ball or something like that.
00:13:49
Speaker 4: I think that's just all ridiculous.
00:13:51
Speaker 2: And I thought this was a good chance to obviously send a message that you got the one week off in the first place. But I think it was a good way to send a message to these dangerous tackles that we're not going to let it fly this.
00:14:01
Speaker 4: See.
00:14:01
Speaker 2: I think we often complained too much that it's based on the outcome. This was a situation without an outcome. Edwid it was fine, but it was still a good opportunity to send a message to the league. As much as we would be disappointed to be missing a star player and opening around, it might have been the right thing. Charlie Common got away with one I thought with Brady Myichek a week before, and that was argued that my chick got concussed in a.
00:14:21
Speaker 4: Separate incident that I don't think anybody's really seen.
00:14:24
Speaker 2: They were successfully done through other powers of b and Northmow and got away with that one. That's two opportunities the AFL has had to clamp down early on dangerous tackles and both of them have slip past.
00:14:33
Speaker 3: They're lucky though, as you say, because you look at that midfield. I was out at Hawthorne training yesterday and you know they're really solid down back. Obviously Josh Battle Tom barrass is going to be back after his backs honess kept him out of that second practice match.
00:14:44
Speaker 5: Their forward line.
00:14:45
Speaker 3: He's going pretty well against the Bulldogs and I know they were misfiring Layton and the Bulldogs got the jump on them, but maybe our choll was threatening. Dylan Moore's really strong, which lewis. They were all performing really strongly. Kelsha Dear out of the side, which I think everyone would have had him playing in this game, but it is that midfield that's got the concerns around just how it's going to look. I mean, Josh Weddle's clearly going to spend more time in there. Josh Ward was at a few center bounces in the first practice match Cod McDonald, he's had a big preseason, and even Nick Watson in there at different times.
00:15:13
Speaker 5: So I think that's probably where we're going to see a little bit of.
00:15:16
Speaker 3: Tinkering against a GDWS lineup that's pretty stacked.
00:15:19
Speaker 1: Yeah, I think they'll keep the Giants guessing with those combinations. I've heard even Jarmin Impy might go through the midfield as well, so Hawthorne with a lot of different options there to swing through. Aaron Cabman's going to miss out for the Giants. He's going to miss the first couple of weeks. They said in a release earlier this week that he has ongoing pelvicsawnis, which is an odd one one that we probably haven't heard in a while, a.
00:15:38
Speaker 5: Late pregnancy symptom more than anything else.
00:15:41
Speaker 3: Speaking from experience, so is those last few weeks that they killer for the pelvic sownis. But it's always cagey. Isn't it for players when you hear terminology.
00:15:50
Speaker 1: Like that, And one thing you never hear clubs talk about anymore is ostiartists, pubis and with all other sorts of ways to say that.
00:15:55
Speaker 3: We don't have to say it to put a chill through football departments, or you've got to say ope, and it's enough to sort of make the walls. We had it.
00:16:03
Speaker 6: I think we had to destigmatize it a bit.
00:16:05
Speaker 1: It's a very common condition when you're training pre season loads.
00:16:09
Speaker 2: Even Jordan to Go he had it hidden recently. They didn't say anything about op when he was clearly battling with it and spoke about with John Ralph recently. It was the duck disease for a while there. The clubs just don't want to say those words.
00:16:21
Speaker 6: Brisbane's hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba. Do we reckon?
00:16:24
Speaker 1: The Bulldogs are feeling pretty fresh. There were three games in Balla rat last week. They didn't have to make any of the trips down there to play. They got to play a primetime home game at whitt And Oval and been on the phone to us trying to convey their disappointment in that way.
00:16:37
Speaker 3: It's quite a point of conjecture that one, of course, the practice matches effectively being makeup games for the premiership points matches that the Bulldogs aren't able to play at that stadium Wall it's under construction.
00:16:48
Speaker 5: But no, the Bulldogs they played at home. They slept in their own beds. They largely got through on skates.
00:16:54
Speaker 3: Apart from Riley Sanders of course, who was cancast and ll miss the game against Brisbane, Timm English was absolutely firing in the rock. So you'd have to say it was a big tick all round for Bevo's boys while others were making well. I was gonna say making the trip back from Ballarat, but it was after half a match and a training session for some as well, on Friday afternoon in Melbourne Richmond.
00:17:14
Speaker 4: Yeah, it was a bizarre day.
00:17:15
Speaker 2: I was there in Balerratte for that game. We had a pause after about two minutes. I was actually on the phone to somebody at the back of the box. When I came in, two minutes had been played, a goal had been Keith Luca Kentfield was on his way to hospital and we were off the ground for lightning.
00:17:27
Speaker 4: So did miss anything.
00:17:29
Speaker 5: Better have than a good foonk. Well, it's been a good tip.
00:17:32
Speaker 4: And it helped. It helped along the line with a story I was working on.
00:17:34
Speaker 2: But yeah, it was you know those days when you're trying to get onto somebody and they call you at the worst time and you can't get them off the phone, and then all hell had broken loose in Balertte, we went off again in the second half for lightning. The players started blasting the songs in the change rooms. Maxwell wanted to sing the song Abba was being played, wile Nathan Jones was trying to a press conference in the Melbourne rooms.
00:17:54
Speaker 4: It was just all happening. And then they went out for.
00:17:55
Speaker 2: A training session, both using the same oval. As Chris Newman said, it was like local footy style. A couple of times the ball got kicked to the other team and they had to shereeviously soccer it back to them.
00:18:05
Speaker 3: Meanwhile, I'll whispering amongst themselves, where are the Western Bulldogs?
00:18:08
Speaker 2: And while this was all happening, the lightning did not stop at all for three hours during the day. The lightning was still going as they were training while they decided to keep going through it. So if you're going to explain any of that to me, I'm still confused mistiopically as I was driving.
00:18:22
Speaker 1: Away from I hope the people of Ballerratte had a good time on the weekend with all those games. I was there Saturday and Sunday, very entertaining. The Nasaia Wang and Eir Miller game was incredible and that takes us to secure to Collingwood. He could play out of the goal square against the Pies and that would be incredibly entertaining someone who won't be matching up on them those Darcy More. They ruled him out after sort of bringing him back on the table this week. Even at training today. Our photographer Michael Klein was out there and said that Moore was training the house down and he thinks I wouldn't rule him out, but the fact that Pies have now in their injury this suggests that they're more comfortable with him returning in round one. But there were some real mind games going on there and I really felt for it.
00:18:58
Speaker 5: It's a big game.
00:19:00
Speaker 3: I I did a Duscy More press conference at the Tennis of all places outside the Emirates Marquee on about I'm going to say the twentieth of January, where he was basically insinuating that I guess people don't really have that much to talk about in January.
00:19:14
Speaker 5: Macalfe's fine. It's been a bit of a niggle. It's no worry. What are we now?
00:19:18
Speaker 3: Seven weeks down the track and he's been ruled out of the biggest game of the weekend. No offense to the other in opening round, but we know it is all about the Northern States.
00:19:28
Speaker 5: But I think all eyes are on Sunday night.
00:19:29
Speaker 3: It's going to be a massive crowd and obviously really interesting to see what the Saints do with their and you look.
00:19:34
Speaker 5: Line up, But no, I wouldn't rule it out from Craig McCrae.
00:19:38
Speaker 3: It's going to be an interesting year for the Pies and I think you've got to keep an ace up your sleep every now and then to keep a jump on your opposition.
00:19:44
Speaker 2: Would you rule out a superstar singer making a guest appearance. We saw someone enter town last week in a green hoodie that we couldn't recognize, But who's coming off a train? Is there any chance that there might be a ginger fellow in the middle of the MCJO before the game.
00:19:57
Speaker 5: I I'm going to go with no but cheese would be good, wouldn't it.
00:20:04
Speaker 1: There's a chance that Ginger Feller could end up in the middle of the MCG. At the moment, I'm rocking one of those arena access lanyards, new one yet, so that they might let me off they were sticking out there. But yeah, I do think I've been telling people with giving you train from Sydney to Melbourne. It's likely that he goes by bus from Melbourne to Adelaide, which wouldn't give him enough time when the guard I think he's performing Monday night in Adelaide.
00:20:28
Speaker 5: Okay, So, but you could do the G. You could do the G pre game.
00:20:32
Speaker 1: If the ANFL is prepared to open their wallet, I'm sure they could get it done. But the fact that it hasn't been advertised yet makes me suspicious because they've got twenty thousand tickets to sell. Yeah, true, I think you bring people in through the doors.
00:20:42
Speaker 5: I'm going I'm going with no, but I'd be rapped if it happens.
00:20:45
Speaker 4: You can do the drive in eight hours, I think it's a chance.
00:20:49
Speaker 1: Some other selection news in Saints Empires, Callum Wilkie has been ruled into the game. Great news for the Saints co captain had a corked calf against Essendon on Saturday. He came out of the game at court of time. The Saints sit was very unusual playing without him. He's never he hasn't missed a match since his debut. He's hardly come to the bench since his debut. He's had a remarkably durable run. He'll be out there. Jack Sonlvanney, we're not sure about yet, is still going through the concussion protocols, but they're pretty positive about his availability. And Joel Cochran might make a debut for Collingwood. He's a tall defender, kicked an enormous goal on Sunday against North Melbourne into the wind. He's a good chance to play given that Moore's out. Reef Mcinness is still about four weeks away and Jeremy how He's out with a calf injury as well. We'll just have some quick fire tips going across the room if you're ready. We did have to submit our tips at midday today for the start of the Herald the Sun tipping competition.
00:21:35
Speaker 5: Before the teams are out.
00:21:36
Speaker 3: I'd like it noted because people often like to deliver feedback on our tips.
00:21:40
Speaker 5: We have to do them early.
00:21:41
Speaker 1: We don't have much information. I hang on to them as long as I can before the twelve pm deadline, which annoys the editors. But you want all the information you can get, You've got you.
00:21:49
Speaker 5: Then you get the three pm reminder email two and you're never in.
00:21:51
Speaker 6: The good books after that.
00:21:53
Speaker 1: Sydney Carlton, I'm going with the Swans. Swans, Sydney, Yes, gold Coaster along Suns for me. Sons have to go with the gold Coast in census so far. GWS Hawthorne going with Hawthorne. I tipped against them in this matchup last year and I got found out.
00:22:08
Speaker 3: So Hawthorne I can't remember who I sent him for the Herald Sun tips only two.
00:22:12
Speaker 5: Hours ago, which probably says a lot about my memory.
00:22:14
Speaker 4: Hawthorne Capital letter Giants from me Ooh, there we go a bit of difference.
00:22:19
Speaker 1: Lions and the Bulldogsbane, Yeah, Lions, Vegas and Saint Kilda Collingwood. I reckon the Saints win. This is they're legitimate. They'll win by they'll win by something. Collingwood could be very competitive, but they're more variables for them. Going with the Saints.
00:22:33
Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm going to Saints.
00:22:34
Speaker 2: Yeah, team share in the Saints pretty similar. Tips Theere disappointedly need some bruising between each other.
00:22:38
Speaker 5: Favorites early, favorites early.
00:22:40
Speaker 1: And now it's time for our final segment, Quick hands. Now, Andrew Dillon wants Ozzie Rules at the Olympics. In twenty thirty two. A few people understood this to be he wants Ozzie Rules to be a metal event at the Olympics.
00:22:51
Speaker 4: He probably wants well.
00:22:52
Speaker 3: He's They're not the only ones to misinterpret the question, because I did a Josh Battle press conference yesterday at Hawthorne where my brain said Brisbane, my mouth said La. So poor Josh Battle. I've effectively asked him the question of you know, like obviously players would support this, you'd be part of the Olympics.
00:23:08
Speaker 5: You know in LA, they'll look at doing the exhibition, and as it's coming out, I'm thinking it's not La, you idiot, And he obviously answered it very emphatically. I'd love to go to LA fantastic.
00:23:19
Speaker 3: I've heard nothing about it because of course you've heard nothing about it because it's not happening.
00:23:24
Speaker 5: No, I think it'd be awesome.
00:23:25
Speaker 1: It's a great way of bringing twenty three gold medals into our nation, injecting them into the economy. If it was a medal event, it won't be that would be an exhibition game. Do you want to say that? Who would you want to be the flag bearer? If an AFL player would be the first every rules player to bear our national flag at the Olympics, who do you want?
00:23:40
Speaker 4: Well?
00:23:40
Speaker 3: I like this, given Josh's heading off to Milano, Cortina in coming days, I'm going with Marcus Bontonpelli because you want not only do you want a really strong performer, but just an all round stand up guy. I think he'd be an awesome ambassador for the game and showing it.
00:23:56
Speaker 5: Off to the world.
00:23:57
Speaker 6: The thirty six year old olympian.
00:23:59
Speaker 5: No, not thinking about it. It's not real. There's no logic appled here.
00:24:04
Speaker 1: I mean, we wouldn't have to pick players in our prime to wing go. We could we could just we could do a fan voted side, so Bumpapelly couldn't make it in the twilight of his career.
00:24:11
Speaker 6: Who do you go? Jo?
00:24:12
Speaker 2: I think the most reliable man in footae Harris Anders, and he could just reliably walk that flag around the stadium.
00:24:17
Speaker 4: I think I think he could handle.
00:24:18
Speaker 5: That big enough. He wouldn't have to handle.
00:24:20
Speaker 2: The levers, which is important to all these other nations out there. He's keeping us above the pack. I think that's important, and he's always just there at the right time to deliver. It just comes out of nowhere with those big spoils, So I think he could cover some ground.
00:24:32
Speaker 6: He wouldn't need to co flag bears alongside him to help bear the load.
00:24:36
Speaker 4: He just double fist it. He'd be fine.
00:24:39
Speaker 1: And our last little tidbit that we noticed in the AFL Cats and survey that came out this week, some of the captains don't know the Rising Star rules and the AFL didn't do anything about it, so they just let the manster wrong.
00:24:49
Speaker 4: Well, they just hung about to dry to be honest.
00:24:51
Speaker 2: It's the email that comes out every year with the captain's anonymously picking who they're going to play in the Grand Final because they're not allowed to pick a premiership.
00:24:57
Speaker 4: Because I have to think themselves and all that sort of stuff.
00:24:59
Speaker 2: To captain chose Sam Lawler to win the Rising Star award when he's ineligible and he's played too many games last year.
00:25:05
Speaker 4: Quick thoughts Lauren who were they? Well, I know Toby Green doesn't read the rules.
00:25:10
Speaker 3: No, it could be him, but surely it's a bit like when someone mocks up a quote in your story. You've got to help a brother out, as you said, You've got to give them a little bit of assistance. They're a bit likewise. In the Grand Final Entertainment category. I don't know if that's on your list. Today, an AFL captain nominated Creed as they preferred GF entertainment. So I'm desperate to know who that was and I'll be on the case all you to find out.
00:25:33
Speaker 1: I think John Newcomb will be banned from next year's Captain's Day just looking through some of the survey answers. Dylan Moore was nominated for the Brownlow Medal one vote. Nick Watson was nominated for the Coleman Medal one vote. One of the captains said that the matchup though were most looking forward to this season was North Melbourne versus West Coast. Right, screams John Newcom to me, I think he's gone.
00:25:53
Speaker 3: He's taken back at profile approach to the captain service.
00:25:58
Speaker 6: He hasn't respected how say the cats and surveys.
00:26:02
Speaker 5: Maybe he's our creed culprit, but rest as short ed. I will be following up and finding out who is the culprit.
00:26:08
Speaker 1: It's a massive week coming up. We'll reveal the culprit next week on the Code AFL show. It's been glad to have Lauren and Josh with us. Josh, you're going off to Milano quarteen A good luck short.
00:26:17
Speaker 3: Trip to Italy for it'll be fine, safe extended travels, thank God.
00:26:21
Speaker 1: Speed Yeah, safe travels and you can catch Josh's win. The Paralympics coverage now AFL coverage of opening around on the Code Sports and Herald Sun websites
