Vance π
Welcome back to Right Quick.
00:08.57
Nandi K
A bite-sized pop culture conversation with your favorite queer unfriendly Black hotties.
00:14.77
Vance π
We're unfriendly today because of colorism. I am Vance Gogh.
00:20.34
Nandi K
And I'm Nandi K. Yeah, you know, light-skinned people really be out here making it hard.
00:27.77
Vance π
They... Well, I don't want this to be the anti-lights episode, but we might we might venture into it a little because it's part of the conversation.
00:31.38
Nandi K
Okay, it won't.
00:34.55
Nandi K
But just a little.
00:36.95
Vance π
um Actually, really what's making me unfriendly is a conversation around colorism. I always hate colorism, but the conversation around colorism that pops up every six months online, that feels dated every time.
00:42.33
Nandi K
Yeah.
00:48.31
Nandi K
Oh, man.
00:50.69
Vance π
And you're like, oh how come y'all like y'all didn't listen at the last conversation because y'all saying the same thing that y'all say?
00:58.65
Nandi K
Yeah, it's tough. And just so we're on the same page, I want to just quickly define colorism.
So colorism is a prejudice or discrimination against individuals with a dark skin tone, typically among people of the same ethnic or racial group. And this episode and every episode is strictly for the Niggas. So if you are not the Niggas, kindly disregard. We are not in your business telling you what to do. This is an intra-communal conversation. But yes, I'm tired of it. And most recently, Auntie Tachina Arnold, was dragging Ari Lennox for saying that Martin was colorist, which was wild.
01:39.16
Vance π
oh
01:46.69
Nandi K
Then Tachina Arnold said it wasn't because she didn't personally feel offended.
01:49.55
Vance π
She
01:51.90
Vance π
Did did you watch the video? She was like, a matter of fact, reverse colorism was happening because they didn't like Gina.
01:58.57
Nandi K
Yeah, she did.
02:00.82
Vance π
They didn't like Tisha Campbell. So they were like, the audience was like actively like booing. Not even booing. It sounded like they weren't laughing at ah her jokes and stuff like that.
02:08.02
Nandi K
Yeah.
02:09.67
Vance π
And I'm like, mm... And then I saw the apology, which led me to read, to watch the original video. But like, it seemed like the internet did.
02:16.45
Nandi K
Sure.
02:17.99
Vance π
They gathered her and her, ah her work kids on her show that she's on or whatever gathered her. So she came back and apologized. But for, of, for, of all people Tachina Arnold, dark skin self at the, the butt of every single terrible joke, dark skin colorist joke, dog, dog all the time.
02:35.22
Nandi K
being called an animal, a beast, a dog, almost every episode, talking about her hair texture. They only said Gina had a big head.
02:45.11
Vance π
Yep.
02:47.19
Nandi K
That was like the only thing they said about Gina.
02:47.38
Vance π
Yeah. you know
02:50.07
Nandi K
You got a big head. Her hair got stuck in a bed thing once.
02:53.50
Vance π
That was funny. But ah
02:56.30
Nandi K
Pam, keep a man, keep a job, had her own apartment.
03:00.20
Vance π
Snatched. 90s baddie. 90s baddie. Yeah.
03:05.94
Nandi K
Yeah. Yeah.
03:06.23
Vance π
Yeah. So it was it was not only disheartening, but it's like, is that what a conversation is? But we know that. I mean, that's literally why we're having this conversation, because the conversation doesn't seem to be evolving?
Nandi K
Yeah, I'm kind of getting tired of it. I always wonder if it's like, is it not evolving? Is there like people at their entry point and it just always revives at the same place because people are like always entering, like understanding? I don't know. Well, *Censored*, how do you identify? You identify as a light, a dark, a brown?
03:42.49
Vance π
I am I feel like... don't want to say a darkie. Yeah, a darkie. If I'm a darkie, I can say that.
03:47.36
Nandi K
You can say it. Yeah.
03:48.08
Vance π
Yeah, no, I feel like I identify as dark, like squarely dark, dark skin, like a little past brown even, like just dark, you know?
03:56.82
Nandi K
Sure. Yeah. Yeah.
03:57.61
Vance π
I will I will say just like growing up, I feel like I think most black people in America, at least, I think that our ideas of how we look as far as our our skin to tone is... ah skewed by white supremacy because growing up, we're told all these bad things about ourselves and we internalize them.
04:11.78
Nandi K
Warped. I agree.
04:18.48
Vance π
So like, I grew up thinking that I was like, like, I've seen people darker than me. So I know I'm not as dark as I can, you know, dark as you can be.
04:24.73
Nandi K
Yeah.
04:26.88
Vance π
But like, I was led to believe I was like obsidian, like, you know, just like the, like the color of pitch. And it was like,
04:34.95
Nandi K
Wow.
04:36.76
Vance π
And of course, when you're a kid, that's a bad thing. So like you internalize that. And then as I got older, I'm like, oh, you brown. Like you, you know, under the right light, you kind of, you got a little mahogany undertone sometimes. Like, like you learn to love that and hold it.
04:48.66
Nandi K
Sure, yeah.
04:50.16
Vance π
But like, I think because we were told all these bad things, like I think everyone thinks they are darker than they are even, which like, I just think, that i just think it's skewed because of the way what we're told.
04:58.23
Nandi K
Interesting. Interesting.
05:03.70
Vance π
That being said, how do you identify? Yeah.
05:06.14
Nandi K
I identify as brown skin. um I don't see the like, contrary to what you were told about your skin tone, I didn't get a lot of messages about skin tone from my parents or even my immediate family. Almost everyone on my mom's side of the family is pretty dark skinned. Um, Like my mom is probably three or four shades darker than I am. um And my brother is probably also a little bit darker. um But yeah, I never had a lot of thoughts about, like whether I was light skin or dark skin until I was in college.
05:50.88
Vance π
Mm-hmm.
05:53.05
Nandi K
And these, this was so wild. These men, young men from Sierra Leone said to me, literally, you're pretty for a dark skin girl. And that was literally the first time anyone had ever commented on what color Black I was. Mind you, this is a really long time ago. I was living in Florida. I was much darker than I am now. Probably like four or five shades darker. Super dark. But not like I wasn't your color and also these people were darker than you.
06:26.71
Vance π
Yeah.
06:29.43
Nandi K
So that was also mindfuck of like, wait, but they were comparing me to basically like white bitches, Latinas. They were I love mommies.
06:37.82
Vance π
Yeah.
06:39.29
Nandi K
You know, like... gross but
06:44.07
Vance π
Dang. Wait, so you're saying you didn't even you didn't even get any like like messaging, at least like directly to you.
06:48.31
Nandi K
Right yeah no and I don't remember any like even like that's how I and know i probably fall somewhere in the middle right because i think when you're not i think the two kind of sides are like very polarizing because I do have a light-skinned brother
06:52.33
Vance π
Hmm mmm.
07:11.80
Nandi K
And I feel like there's some complicated things there. And my dad's family is light-skinned. And now that I'm older, there's some things that I... see but like my grandma didn't marry a light-skinned man like she wasn't like trying to keep her family pure or nothing like that it was nothing like that so like I just feel like my family didn't have any like openly hostile or even like strong thoughts about color like that um
07:45.82
Vance π
Dang. I my people specifically, so my sister is Bye Rachel.
07:52.47
Nandi K
Right.
07:52.63
Vance π
ah Light skin, yellow Bye Rachel.
07:52.87
Nandi K
I forgot about that.
07:54.79
Vance π
And it was just.
07:55.16
Nandi K
Bi-Rachel. That's not light-skinned. I want to point out that light-skinned and bi-Rachel are different.
07:57.69
Vance π
Oh, fair. Look.
08:01.27
Nandi K
Being a light-skinned black person and having a parent that is white.
08:01.43
Vance π
let
08:05.34
Nandi K
But she grew up black, so I don't know. She's not really, but she is. But she's not.
08:09.62
Vance π
Well, that's the complication though, right? Because my sister is light-skinned Bi-Rachel.
08:13.34
Nandi K
Yeah.
08:16.38
Vance π
The rest of my family are just light-skinned. She doesn't look so much different than the rest of them.
08:19.61
Nandi K
Mm-hmm.
08:23.26
Vance π
But with that being said, growing up with my sister, it was like, you got this yellow girl and this Black boy.
08:23.77
Nandi K
sure yeah
08:31.19
Vance π
So it was consistently being talked about to me. And I was consistently seeing the differences in how we were treated and like, that's the pretty one and that's not, you know, so like it was, it was just, it was always a lot, like in just in the house, even from my mom.
08:41.85
Nandi K
yeah
08:47.86
Nandi K
I definitely experienced that with my brother but also since my brother was a boy it it adds like such a different layer to it took me a while to kind of see the colorism of it all um until I was much older, but I think also the fact he was a boy and he was high skin not great for him either like let's be real not great for him either it's not good on either side but yeah that shit sucks
09:17.34
Vance π
And I think being a boy, in my family full of light-skinned people actually helped me because of the sexism of it all, to be honest.
09:25.08
Nandi K
Damn.
09:25.06
Vance π
Because there's not that many boys in our and my cousin group. There's only three of us. And um we get treated better. Like, I feel it., I know it.
09:34.01
Nandi K
Hey.
09:34.22
Vance π
I see it
09:34.41
Nandi K
Hey. Hey, it's just the truth.
09:38.17
Vance π
We just had the misandry episode.
09:38.90
Nandi K
It's just the truth.
09:40.73
Vance π
But but yeah, no, like we we are treated better. So like there's that. But then I also had light-skinned cousins. So I could see how that even worked.
09:48.54
Nandi K
Yeah.
09:48.98
Vance π
ah The light-skinned male cousins. So like they would be get treated better than me.
09:54.22
Nandi K
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
09:54.90
Vance π
And then like don't throw in queerness. so like there was I mean, there was always like all this stuff, as as always. But like I could see how I was treated different growing up. And like⦠And it's like, it's hard to pinpoint which is actual intersection is why you're being treated bad, but like you could, you could feel the treatment is different.
10:15.03
Nandi K
Yeah. Yeah, that shit sucks. I do talk to a lot of like my friends and people that I know who are dark skin. And I feel like the thing you touched on earlier about how people think how we see ourselves is a little warped. Like I do feel like almost every dark skin person is telling me how they're like the darkest person. So also one thing I do though, remember is my mom actually loves dark skin.
10:34.65
Vance π
Yes.
10:41.08
Nandi K
And so in a lot of ways, I was taught, I didn't get a lot of messages about my skin in particular, but about what is beautiful. Oh, I learned that the Blacker you are, the more beautiful you are.
And I believe that I have seen the most beautiful. I just love, I just think everyone looks better. if they're darker and my dad also used to say this really be a really problematic thing he was like and he used Mariah Carey as an example, he was like Mariah Carey is not cute turn her dark skin now personally I still think Mariah Carey would be cute if she was dark skinned personally i think she would still be cute but also that was something my daddy used to say so like
11:22.68
Vance π
Yeah.
11:27.42
Nandi K
Again, not about my skin tone, but I've never been taught to view light skin as better and very much the opposite.
11:36.06
Vance π
But you had, sounded like you had, like, good modeling as far as, in that regard.
11:41.72
Nandi K
Sure, yeah.
11:41.82
Vance π
My granny's people, they light-skinned with freckles and curly, frizzy hair. They're, like, but light brown, like, almost ginger.
11:46.65
Nandi K
And they stay light skin and stuff.
11:49.10
Vance π
Yeah, you know, like, and it's just like,
11:49.17
Nandi K
Yeah, uh-huh. Mm-hmm.
11:52.31
Vance π
But anyway, um'm I'm trying to, um I'm trying not go.
11:54.17
Nandi K
No, that's real. No, but it's like some people don't talk about how like intentional colorism can be in families.
11:56.54
Vance π
Yeah.
12:02.38
Nandi K
like How your whole family light-skinned.
12:03.03
Vance π
Yeah.
12:07.74
Nandi K
How is it that your whole family is light-skinned generation after generation after generation? Because y'all are only marrying light-skinned people. And why is that? Your decisions don't happen in a vacuum. Yeah.
12:22.93
Vance π
It's the clout.
12:23.16
Nandi K
yeah
12:24.41
Vance π
It's the the, what you said about the um more pretty, like, you know, there's this like idea that they're more, they're better.
12:30.65
Nandi K
wild
12:30.82
Vance π
They're more pretty. Um, I also think it's the, I mean, the proximity of whiteness. It's the, like, they understand that, that like, that's that's a step closer to power.
12:36.22
Nandi K
ew Of course
12:40.66
Vance π
And it's just like, we could keep it this way. Like, we may not be white, but, like, we could keep it this way. And it's like, it's still trash because it's like, ugh.
12:50.23
Nandi K
Yeah, and it also upsets me how, and talking about how annoying the conversation is is that whenever dark-skinned people, particularly dark-skinned women, talk about their experiences with colorism, here comes the light-skinned brigade coming in saying, well, I experienced light-skinned, I experienced colorism because the dark-skinned girl didn't hatred on me because I was prettier than her. Man, that's not colorism.
13:20.45
Vance π
was bullying. And that's...
13:21.46
Nandi K
Also, I'm going to say
13:22.06
Vance π
You may have deserved it.
13:23.83
Nandi K
you I'm going to say it. Light-skinned people cannot experience colorism.
13:30.36
Vance π
Well, I think they they... They... Specifically benefit from it.
13:35.51
Nandi K
Yes.
13:35.80
Vance π
And... And I think like, if we're having a conversation.
13:36.94
Nandi K
That's why you can't experience it if you're benefiting from it.
13:41.69
Vance π
We must not center their experiences because we're not talking about their experiences, which is why I don't like the conversation because like they always take up so much space.
13:48.70
Nandi K
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
13:50.21
Vance π
And then it becomes either educating them or telling them to shut the fuck up. And this is like, either way, we're not actually having a conversation.
13:55.77
Nandi K
Right.
13:58.25
Vance π
And I'm like, hey, if y'all need to go to a light skin support group to talk about how like, you know, you were called Cinnamon Toast Crunch or whatever, you know, light light skin, whatever kind of nice light skin, you know, bad thing, you were derogatory thing you were called, like do that.
14:12.41
Nandi K
Yeah.
14:14.35
Vance π
But like, don't come to my Black ass. But like that's why I don't like the conversation. Because I'm like, how you going to tell my Black ass?
14:18.94
Nandi K
Yeah.
14:21.69
Nandi K
How sad you were.
14:23.19
Vance π
I shouldn't be saying this. My sister sent me, My sister sent me a...
14:26.39
Nandi K
I was like, shots fired.
14:27.31
Vance π
ah
14:27.79
Nandi K
You already fired. this
14:29.78
Nandi K
The shot was already fired with Cinnamon Toast Crunch, so.
14:31.48
Vance π
but my sister sent me a text. It was maybe a couple months ago. I don't even think I responded to it because it was essentially like ah ah colorism this, colorism that, we all nigga. And then it was ah it was Bob Parr from The Incredibles hitting the table. And it was like Nigga is Nigga. And I was like, uh-uh.
14:52.28
Nandi K
No!
14:54.23
Vance π
I was like, uh-uh. Uh-uh.
14:55.75
Nandi K
We're not all having the same experience, guys.
14:59.90
Vance π
Fuck off!
15:00.28
Nandi K
We're not all having the same experience.
15:03.70
Vance π
Fuck off! I was like, how you gone, you gonna all lives matter this shit? Like, like we all niggas. I'm like we are all niggas, but...
15:11.66
Nandi K
I know what side that's coming from.
15:14.04
Vance π
Right, and it's just like, you tellingβ¦
15:14.78
Nandi K
Yeah, uh-huh.
15:17.34
Vance π
You're the only one that benefits from this idea that we shouldn't talk about colorism.
15:19.35
Nandi K
That Caucasian blood rising up. That Caucasian blood is rising up.
15:22.62
Aaron Rand Freeman
Yeah.
15:23.54
Vance π
Awaken! Because that's...
15:27.49
Nandi K
All Niggas Matter.
15:30.02
Vance π
That's crazy. Yeah, I saw that. I'm like, i don't even know. I don't think I responded because I'm like, yo, like, don't... Y'all the only people that benefit from that rhetoric where it's like, don't... No, no, no. Let's not address this. Let's talk about all...
15:45.11
Nandi K
No, let's address it. let
15:46.68
Vance π
But... But that's the... That's the conversation in a microcosm. Like, that's the bigger conversation that's always had.
15:50.87
Nandi K
Yeah. Yeah.
15:52.30
Vance π
And I hate it because it's just like, why is your yellow ass even saying that? Like, how about you...
15:56.76
Nandi K
Yeah. Yeah.
15:58.07
Vance π
shut up and listen while the darkies are saying. And the thing is, you know you benefit from this shit.
16:00.82
Nandi K
yeah
16:02.65
Vance π
If you woke up like me tomorrow, like your life would change.
16:06.58
Nandi K
And everyone knows it. Why are we pretending? Like, this also goes back to enslavement. This is a condition. This is white supremacy's handiwork that they established 500 fucking years ago that we're still dealing with the residue of today. It's like, guys, well, I know for me what I'm doing to combat colorism is I don't like any new light skin people so I'm not fans of any light skin media people anyone anyone who's a celebrity if you're light skin I'm not gonna support you like openly like I was saying like Kehlani like girl I root for you in spirit, I know a lot of people like your music I she doesn't need another fan like
17:00.50
Nandi K
yeah she has enough fans like light skin people have enough fans i'll be over here being fans of the dark skin people thank you yeah ew
17:07.48
Vance π
I feel like I'll hold that for dating. Like, I'm like, I'm going to date a dark person or a brown person, at least. And, like, even, like, don't know.
17:18.61
Vance π
I'm in several queer groups and, like, a light-skinned person will come and everyone just forgets their morals. And they just falling all over themselves.
17:25.70
Nandi K
ew
17:27.00
Vance π
And I'm like, hey, sometimes I could see the person be like, this person is attractive, right? But, like, I'm not going to get on the ground with y'all. Because, like, you need, like, stand up. Literally stand up. Like, why...
17:38.90
Nandi K
ah
17:40.82
Vance π
Like, yeah, so so I think, like, even, like like, politically, when it comes to dating, like, the optics of dating, like, it's just like, well, y'all gonna have to catch me with the darky.
17:41.62
Nandi K
yeah
17:50.55
Vance π
I'm sorry.
17:50.84
Nandi K
yeah you'll never see me with a light skin I swipe left on light skin people too I don't like yeah not interested yeah you have enough attention I'm sure
17:50.95
Vance π
Like, and I'm not sorry.
17:56.02
Vance π
Yeah, I divest, I divest attention because it's just like, hey, and the thing is, you don't need it from me. You got it. Like, you got it.
18:06.12
Nandi K
I'm not the core demographic, not Brayden, but my God.
18:06.47
Vance π
Brayden or whatever.
18:11.57
Nandi K
My nephew's name is Bryson. He by Rachel, I know.
18:15.22
Vance π
Yeah, that's a biracial name.
18:15.97
Nandi K
So it is, yeah.
18:17.88
Vance π
They see them babies and they be like, is this a Kayden? Is this a Kaylin with a
18:21.85
Nandi K
Yeah.
18:22.74
Vance π
Kalin
18:23.32
Nandi K
Well, we should talk a little bit about light skin culture.
18:24.02
Vance π
with the why
18:32.58
Aaron Rand Freeman
Yeah.
18:33.27
Vance π
Yeah, so I like to joke, but I don't think it's jokes. I feel like it's live action about like light skin culture being like it's it's more of a vibe than a than an actual aesthetic.
18:37.99
Nandi K
It's not. It is.
18:44.77
Vance π
Well, it is an aesthetic for sure, but it's a vibe. So like you don't have to be light to participate in light skin culture.
18:50.23
Nandi K
No.
18:51.48
Vance π
So like I put down a couple.
18:52.28
Nandi K
This is also an extension of white supremacy. I want to say light-skinned culture is an extension of white supremacy, and if you are practicing it, watch it.
19:04.60
Vance π
Right, especially if you're not light-skinned.
19:04.92
Nandi K
It's a slippery slope.
19:06.36
Vance π
I'm like, that don't... Like, the light-skinned culture is not a it's not a costume. You need to take that off. ah So, notable dark-skins that I have on here that participate in light-skinned culture, I have Omarion.
19:17.88
Nandi K
Yeah.
19:20.57
Nandi K
here
19:21.37
Vance π
and I think Omarion's number one, low-key. But Omarion, Neo, Urshur, our favorite, Kofi, Saru...
19:23.74
Nandi K
For Yep.
19:28.82
Nandi K
and yep
19:31.82
Vance π
Saru... Saru...
19:32.59
Nandi K
Sarobi, Kofi Sarobi.
19:33.70
Vance π
Sarobi

I would even add in wow, this is about to be controversial, but would you say Morris Chestnut also participates in light-skinned culture?
19:45.05
Vance π
Oh
19:45.31
Nandi K
I think he does. i think he does. do you not think he does?
19:53.59
Vance π
I feel like gen x got a sniper on the roof somewhere ready to take one of us out um but
19:59.54
Nandi K
I just went and Googled him.
20:01.91
Vance π
yeah I think it's the swag it's the swag yeah it's the
20:03.86
Nandi K
He has a lot of squinty eye pictures.
20:09.08
Nandi K
Little squinty eyes.
20:11.48
Vance π
Because he has the same like aura as a Michael Ealy, even though they are vastly... like They're almost on opposite sides of the spectrum, color-wise.
20:17.91
Nandi K
Yeah. Agreed.
20:22.07
Vance π
Okay. Dang, I'm going to add Morris Chestnut to the list.
20:25.33
Nandi K
I do think Morris Chestnut. I just Google him and I'm looking at all the pictures under him and I'm like, I have someone in my house who's dark skin that participates in light skin culture is tough.
20:39.06
Nandi K
And if you are worried that a friend of yours might be participating in light skin culture, here's some signs. You can check their phone and check their most recent reel.
20:49.82
Nandi K
How many selfies are in there?
20:51.16
Vance π
ah How many selfies? ah They have more than five selfies.
20:53.30
Nandi K
How many selfies are in there, y'all?
20:55.67
Vance π
You need to get out of there immediately. That's ah that's a light skin.
20:57.62
Nandi K
You need to have it you have to have an intervention. Friends don't let friends participate in light skin culture. Okay.
21:05.21
Vance π
a light skin ovation.
21:09.30
Vance π
Okay.
21:11.30
Aaron Rand Freeman
Y'all got five minutes. time
21:13.52
Vance π
Thank you. I feel like we're done.
21:16.63
Nandi K
Yeah, I feel like we did it. I mean, we should probably provide the people with some resources. I just, we want to provide the people with some media that they can learn about.
21:22.43
Vance π
OK.
21:26.59
Nandi K
My contribution is going to be a fictional piece of media. I'm recommending The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison. If you've ever heard her tell the story about the person who inspired this book, go and Google the video, where she talks about it.
21:44.25
Vance π
Is it shady?
21:45.82
Nandi K
It's kind of shady. is Yeah, it's a little bit shady, but it's also like, it's just white supremacy does a number on us and makes us think that we are not beautiful and it makes us ah long for things that shouldn't that we shouldn't long for because what we have is great already.
22:03.17
Vance π
I love that.
22:03.00
Nandi K
But yeah, it's a great story that she tells about a girl she grew up with that inspired the bluest eye. But that's my recommendation. What about you, Vance?
22:13.85
Vance π
My recommendation is going to be a podcast um that is titled Colorism Healing with Dr. Sarah L. Webb. Dr. Sarah Webb has books about colorism. It seems like she's dedicated her life to it. Couldn't be me, but she's a whole doctor. So she got paid to do this. So, you know, um I listened to an episode cause don't like to endorse things that, you know, we didn't check out. It was solid. It was, um you know, she's a doctor talking about a thing that she studied.
22:35.96
Nandi K
Yeah.
22:38.97
Vance π
So, you know, it's, There's a lot of data and stuff. But yeah, you know, a podcast if you don't like reading. But y'all should be reading.
22:47.59
Nandi K
All right. Well, big thanks to our producer and audio Adonis, Aaron Rand Freeman.
