<v Speaker 1>This is episode nine fifty seven of the SOLN Monster

<v Speaker 1>Sounds Off for Sunday, March twenty ninth, twenty twenty six.

<v Speaker 1>I am the Solemn Monster. Twenty five years ago this

<v Speaker 1>past week, I remember logging onto WWF dot com and

<v Speaker 1>seeing a giant graphic telling me that WWF had purchased WCW.

<v Speaker 1>You can imagine my reaction. It was the end of

<v Speaker 1>an era. There had not been much drama around the

<v Speaker 1>Monday Night War in a while by that point, but

<v Speaker 1>it didn't make it any less shocking that of all

<v Speaker 1>people to buy the company, it was Vince McMahon. And

<v Speaker 1>then the following Monday was the famous Raw Nitro simulcast

<v Speaker 1>where Vince opened the show and he let all the

<v Speaker 1>w CW fans know that their fate was now in

<v Speaker 1>his hands. And then Shane McMahon walked out during that

<v Speaker 1>spring break Nitro in Panama City and he announced that

<v Speaker 1>he now owned WCW. Shane McMahon the new owner of WCW,

<v Speaker 1>Stephanie McMahon as the owner of ECW. What a time

<v Speaker 1>to be alive. And the wrestling business has not been

<v Speaker 1>the same since. They have tried many times over the

<v Speaker 1>years through the brand split, to try to recreate that

<v Speaker 1>feeling of WWF versus WCW Raw versus Nitro, but they

<v Speaker 1>have failed every single time because you just can't do it.

<v Speaker 1>Even with AW now is their biggest competitor, it is

<v Speaker 1>hardly a fair fight. I mean, WWE is just too

<v Speaker 1>big to ever convincingly lose a war to anyone else.

<v Speaker 1>Plus all the guaranteed money they have coming in through

<v Speaker 1>their media rights deals. You know, it was that competition

<v Speaker 1>in nineteen ninety six, in nineteen ninety seven that knocked

<v Speaker 1>them back on their heels and forced them to change creatively.

<v Speaker 1>You know, their backs were against the wall. They were

<v Speaker 1>near bankruptcy at one point in ninety seven until they

<v Speaker 1>expanded all of their pay per views from two hours

<v Speaker 1>to three. Just like WCW had done. They followed their

<v Speaker 1>lead and they jacked up the price, I think by

<v Speaker 1>five dollars per show. That got them out of the

<v Speaker 1>hole that they were in. And then Vince told Brett Hard, Hey,

<v Speaker 1>I could afford to pay you now, but it was

<v Speaker 1>too late. Brett had already signed with WCW. But it

<v Speaker 1>was that competition. It was putting the TV on and

<v Speaker 1>flipping back and forth between the two shows and not

<v Speaker 1>knowing who might show up and where and when, or

<v Speaker 1>again who was going to jump ship. It was sting

<v Speaker 1>chasing the nWo. It was Gold getting hot. It was

<v Speaker 1>all the cruiserweights and all the smaller guys getting exposure

<v Speaker 1>on TNT and TBS, and even when WCW had no

<v Speaker 1>idea what to do with them, they at least had

<v Speaker 1>a platform to get over and then they made the

<v Speaker 1>jump to become even bigger stars. It was the best

<v Speaker 1>time to be a fan, it really was. The quality

<v Speaker 1>of the end ring may be better now than it

<v Speaker 1>was then, but there was something about wrestling them and

<v Speaker 1>the intensity of it that we just we don't have

<v Speaker 1>that today, And it's not that wrestling is bad now.

<v Speaker 1>It's just it's different. You know, the excitement is not

<v Speaker 1>what it used to be. Back then, it was simpler times.

<v Speaker 1>You know, they didn't have to take three commercials in

<v Speaker 1>the middle of a match. They didn't have to promote this,

<v Speaker 1>that and the other. You know, the focus was on

<v Speaker 1>the action. The focus was on the stories and the

<v Speaker 1>show itself, not all of these other ancillary things that

<v Speaker 1>eat up so much time where it's almost more about

<v Speaker 1>the entrance now and the time it takes for someone

<v Speaker 1>to come to the ring than it is what they

<v Speaker 1>actually do once they're in the ring. You know, back then,

<v Speaker 1>when the two companies were competing every Monday, you couldn't

<v Speaker 1>waste time on shit like that because you didn't want

<v Speaker 1>to give up any ground to the other show. You

<v Speaker 1>had to keep the action going. If one show started

<v Speaker 1>at eight pm, you know, to try to get the

<v Speaker 1>jump on him, the other one would start three minutes earlier.

<v Speaker 1>I mean, really petty shit. But the real winners were

<v Speaker 1>the fans because it made things fun to follow. WCW

<v Speaker 1>did more to kill itself than Vince McMahon ever did,

<v Speaker 1>even though he likes to take credit for killing the competition.

<v Speaker 1>They killed themselves. They killed themselves through mismanagement, bad booking,

<v Speaker 1>and their inability to create new stars. That's what killed

<v Speaker 1>WCW WWF getting hot, it sped up the process and

<v Speaker 1>the AOL time Warner merger that didn't help. There were

<v Speaker 1>absolutely people who worked for Turner who wanted them to

<v Speaker 1>have nothing to do with WCW or just wrestling in general.

<v Speaker 1>They would fiddle with the books to make it look

<v Speaker 1>like they were losing more money than they really were.

<v Speaker 1>All of those things were conspiring against them. But had

<v Speaker 1>Eric Bischoff Infusion Media bought the company like they originally

<v Speaker 1>intended to, I think the end result would have been

<v Speaker 1>the same. Yeah, they would have survived a little bit

<v Speaker 1>longer than they did, But Bischoff's period of real success

<v Speaker 1>with WCW was fairly small, and he's been able to

<v Speaker 1>parlay those eighty three weeks thirty years ago into a

<v Speaker 1>successful podcast and other things that he can use to

<v Speaker 1>support himself. But would w CW still be alive today

<v Speaker 1>if Bischoff had bought it, No, I don't believe it would.

<v Speaker 1>But if the company didn't die in two thousand and one,

<v Speaker 1>they would very likely be no TNA, maybe no ring

<v Speaker 1>of honor right, Who knows if there would even be

<v Speaker 1>an aw today. One of the great what if questions

<v Speaker 1>in wrestling history. What if right WCW stuck around for

<v Speaker 1>another five years, What does the wrestling world look like today?

<v Speaker 1>You know, does Hulk Hogan go back to WWE and

<v Speaker 1>get that WrestleMania match with the Rock? Because Bischoff was guy,

<v Speaker 1>you know, he very likely would have wound up working

<v Speaker 1>with him. Aj Styles was working for WCW when the

<v Speaker 1>company went under. Would Bischoff had kept someone like him

<v Speaker 1>around to help prop up the new company if he

<v Speaker 1>had gotten it, you know, would he have tried to

<v Speaker 1>recreate what he did with the Cruiser Weights by building

<v Speaker 1>a core group of young, high flying guys to carry

<v Speaker 1>the shows with a handful of big names to anchor it.

<v Speaker 1>What would the formula have been? I don't know, It's possible.

<v Speaker 1>After WWE bought it, plans were being made for WCW

<v Speaker 1>to live on as its own brand, with the idea

<v Speaker 1>that WCW would get the row slot on Mondays and

<v Speaker 1>WWE would have the SmackDown slot on Thursdays. And that

<v Speaker 1>all went out the window after that Booker t buff

<v Speaker 1>Bagwell debacle. In Tacoma, Washington, which was not the match

<v Speaker 1>to do in that spot. But they didn't have a

<v Speaker 1>lot of the big names that would have appealed to

<v Speaker 1>people at that time. Hogan, Flair Haul and Nash Goldberg.

<v Speaker 1>I mean, they were content to collect their guaranteed money

<v Speaker 1>and take a paid vacation. I would have done the

<v Speaker 1>same thing for the money those guys were probably making.

<v Speaker 1>You know, after that night in Tacoma, all the planning,

<v Speaker 1>Jim Ross booking venues out months in advance for WCW shows,

<v Speaker 1>It all went down the tubes, probably for the better.

<v Speaker 1>Vince McMahon never would have allowed WCW to have any

<v Speaker 1>type of real success, even though now he owned it,

<v Speaker 1>because oh it's WCWWCW can't triumph in any way over WWE.

<v Speaker 1>He even conditioned the fans to feel that way, right,

<v Speaker 1>which is why they were so cold to WCW. At

<v Speaker 1>first they didn't care. They're the enemy, but for years

<v Speaker 1>they were branded that way, and so that takes hold

<v Speaker 1>after a while. Now, all of a sudden, you expect

<v Speaker 1>these people, they're supposed to cheer for them. It was

<v Speaker 1>never gonna work. The minute he bought the company, WCW

<v Speaker 1>was a walking corpse. He got what he wanted out

<v Speaker 1>of it. He got the tape library and the other assets.

<v Speaker 1>I mean, the money they've made off the tape library

<v Speaker 1>alone has more than paid for what he bought WCW

<v Speaker 1>for was pennies on the dollar. It's frustrating to see

<v Speaker 1>how hot that company was at one time and how

<v Speaker 1>quickly they burned out. It never should have happened, and

<v Speaker 1>the wrestling business is worse off for it having happened.

<v Speaker 1>You know, that much was clear in two thousand and one,

<v Speaker 1>and it's just as clear twenty five years later, in

<v Speaker 1>twenty twenty six. Outside of the death of Owen Heart

<v Speaker 1>and the ben Wa murder suicide. All right, from a

<v Speaker 1>business standpoint, the worst thing to ever happen to wrestling

<v Speaker 1>was the death of WCW. And I mean, we could

<v Speaker 1>talk about the death of the territories, you know, many

<v Speaker 1>of which you know would have gone down regardless the

<v Speaker 1>death of Kfabe. That whole crash TV era of wrestling

<v Speaker 1>has its pros and cons the what chance, There's a

<v Speaker 1>lot of bad things that we can talk about, but

<v Speaker 1>the death of WCW and the monopoly that it created

<v Speaker 1>is right there at the top. If you'd like to

<v Speaker 1>a few more notes on the death of Dennis Condrey

<v Speaker 1>of The Midnight Express. I shared this on The Uncrowned

<v Speaker 1>Wrestling Show on Tuesday. This came from Jim Cornett on

<v Speaker 1>his podcast who Knew Condre better than anybody. Conrey's wife

<v Speaker 1>of thirty three years is Teresa. Was at work on Friday,

<v Speaker 1>the friday he died, and she had texted him around

<v Speaker 1>four o'clock that her nursing shift was ending, and he

<v Speaker 1>didn't answer, which was unusual. As it turns out, he

<v Speaker 1>had fallen at home and the way that he fell,

<v Speaker 1>he broke his neck and He badly damaged his spinal cord,

<v Speaker 1>and the neighbor found him laying on the floor. He

<v Speaker 1>was alive, he was cognizant, but he was paralyzed from

<v Speaker 1>the chest down and he ended up on a respirator.

<v Speaker 1>He passed away shortly thereafter. Yeah, that's the thing about

<v Speaker 1>getting old, man, you know, one bad fall can be

<v Speaker 1>the end, or it can be the beginning of the end.

<v Speaker 1>You hear about older people, they fall, they break a hip,

<v Speaker 1>and after that it's just this cascading sequence of just

<v Speaker 1>awful shit that happens, and it's all downhill. In this case, Contry,

<v Speaker 1>he had taken bumps in the ring for decades plus.

<v Speaker 1>He battled cancer four different times. So who knows, you

<v Speaker 1>know what kind of effect that had on his neck,

<v Speaker 1>you know, to where one fall he breaks it. He

<v Speaker 1>had throat cancer. I mean, so all the radiation and stuff,

<v Speaker 1>I'm sure that had an effect on his throat, his neck,

<v Speaker 1>that whole you know, that whole area. So who knows,

<v Speaker 1>you know how that may have played a role. But

<v Speaker 1>Cornett said Condrey had spoken to his wife about her

<v Speaker 1>retiring soon so that they could spend more time together

<v Speaker 1>in their twilight years, and she was less than two

<v Speaker 1>weeks away from retirement and now he's gone. So it

<v Speaker 1>was heartbreaking to listen to him talk about it because

<v Speaker 1>you could hear it in his voice, just how broken

<v Speaker 1>up he is about the whole thing. I haven't heard

<v Speaker 1>him like that since Bobby Eaton died. And this was

<v Speaker 1>announced on Tuesday as I was recording the Uncrowned Wrestling

<v Speaker 1>Show that Psycho sid Vicious will be inducted into the

<v Speaker 1>WWE Hall of Fame Class of twenty twenty six as

<v Speaker 1>part of its Legacy Class. Finally, the only men left

<v Speaker 1>to have held the Winged Eagle Belt to not be

<v Speaker 1>in the Hall of Fame, we'll finally take his rightful place.

<v Speaker 1>I always thought that was very weird that every person

<v Speaker 1>who would held that championship was in except him. But

<v Speaker 1>we actually got two names this week that are going in.

<v Speaker 1>I will get to the other one here in a

<v Speaker 1>little bit. But again, yet another name that I was

<v Speaker 1>hoping to see go in when they were still alive,

<v Speaker 1>and I know they were hoping for it as well.

<v Speaker 1>But then he passes away and then he gets in.

<v Speaker 1>Hence why this is being relegated to the Legacy class.

<v Speaker 1>In the past, when you are inducted into the Legacy class,

<v Speaker 1>which they first introduced ten years ago. There's no fanfare,

<v Speaker 1>speeches from loved ones or anything like that. They just

<v Speaker 1>sort of announce you. Last year, Kamala Dori Funk Senior

<v Speaker 1>and Ivan Koloff were the Legacy inductees and they at

<v Speaker 1>least aired video packages for them, and they showed their

<v Speaker 1>family members and the audience. They would stand up and

<v Speaker 1>they would wave, So, I mean, it's better than it

<v Speaker 1>was when they first started doing it. But not long

<v Speaker 1>before he died, Sid said he was hopeful of going

<v Speaker 1>in now that Vince McMahon was gone, because he thought

<v Speaker 1>that made an in dduction more likely Vince not being

<v Speaker 1>around anymore against the two of them just you know,

<v Speaker 1>they didn't get along at various points very well, so

<v Speaker 1>he was expecting and hoping that that might clear the

<v Speaker 1>way for him to get in. Sid's oldest son, Frank, said,

<v Speaker 1>congratulations to the Master and Ruler of the world. Grateful

<v Speaker 1>for the recognition by WWE inducting my dad into the

<v Speaker 1>Hall of Fame. He deserves this and I wish he

<v Speaker 1>was here to be a part of the celebration. I

<v Speaker 1>love and miss you, Dad. His younger brother, Gunner said this,

<v Speaker 1>it's official. My father's Psycho said, Vicious is going into

<v Speaker 1>the WWE Hall of Fame. The master and ruler of

<v Speaker 1>the world is finally getting his flowers. Proud to be

<v Speaker 1>his son and to carry that legacy forward. The Hall

<v Speaker 1>of Fame just got a whole lot more vicious. Gunner,

<v Speaker 1>by the way, is planning a memorial show in his

<v Speaker 1>father's honor on August twenty ninth in West Memphis, Arkansas,

<v Speaker 1>called the Psycho Sid Memorial Benefit Show, with one hundred

<v Speaker 1>percent of the proceeds going straight to local animal shelters.

<v Speaker 1>I guess Sid was a big animal lover, so that

<v Speaker 1>is a cool thing they're doing. Gunner is the one

<v Speaker 1>who broke the news on Facebook a couple of years

<v Speaker 1>ago that his father had passed away after battling cancer

<v Speaker 1>for several years. And at the time, he said that

<v Speaker 1>his dad was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in twenty

<v Speaker 1>sixteen and aphib around the same time, and he was

<v Speaker 1>also given a pacemaker, and then in April of twenty

<v Speaker 1>twenty one, he was diagnosed with stage four non Hodgkins lymphoma,

<v Speaker 1>which was linked to round up weed killer. He said,

<v Speaker 1>so he wasn't just battling stage four cancer. He apparently

<v Speaker 1>had also gotten COVID as well, which is what led

<v Speaker 1>to his death. But Sid had not told anybody, not

<v Speaker 1>publicly anyway, about his cancer. He was still making appearances,

<v Speaker 1>you know, pretty much up until he died. If you

<v Speaker 1>just look at Sid, he was the perfect pro wrestler.

<v Speaker 1>Like if I was creating a wrestler and two twix,

<v Speaker 1>I would want him to look like Sid. Or if

<v Speaker 1>I had the option of choosing someone who looked like Sid,

<v Speaker 1>that's the person I would gravitate to. Right. He was

<v Speaker 1>the master of the power bomb. Great promo. Even when

<v Speaker 1>he would have a bad promo, it was so bad

<v Speaker 1>it was good. You were always entertained at least, and

<v Speaker 1>he was over everywhere he went. Didn't matter if it

<v Speaker 1>was Memphis, it didn't matter, if it was WCWWWEECW. He

<v Speaker 1>can go around on the independen scene, it did not matter.

<v Speaker 1>He was over everywhere he went. Two time WWE Champion,

<v Speaker 1>two time WCW Champion, a member of the Four Horsemen

<v Speaker 1>at one time to help combat RoboCop. Yes, RoboCop and

<v Speaker 1>the only two WrestleMania is that he ever worked. He

<v Speaker 1>made event in both shows, one against Hulk Hogan and

<v Speaker 1>the other against the Undertaker. Now I had the chance

<v Speaker 1>to meet the man once. In nineteen ninety six, not

<v Speaker 1>long after he won the world title from Shawn Michaels,

<v Speaker 1>he did a signing at fun Time, USA. Yes, the

<v Speaker 1>same fun Time where Crash Holly went down the superslide.

<v Speaker 1>Fun Time's been gone a long time now it's a

<v Speaker 1>storage facility. But when he showed up for that signing

<v Speaker 1>and he pulled that winged eagle belt out of that

<v Speaker 1>black velvet bag, I was so tempted to grab it

<v Speaker 1>and run. I'm telling you, my intrusive thoughts were almost

<v Speaker 1>getting the better of me. But you know, the man

<v Speaker 1>was six foot nine, three hundred and thirteen pounds. I

<v Speaker 1>don't think that would have been a wise move, but

<v Speaker 1>I was tempted. I would have been like Crash. I

<v Speaker 1>would have been gonna be chasing me through the ballpit.

<v Speaker 1>But the man was going to be a crop duster

<v Speaker 1>on a farm until he met Randy Savage at the

<v Speaker 1>gym one day and the rest is history. Hey, you

<v Speaker 1>want to be a wrestler, and the rest is history.

<v Speaker 1>I've talked about him being one of two names that

<v Speaker 1>Antonio Andnoki considered for the big Van Vader gimmick. It

<v Speaker 1>was Sid in the war I think he wanted the

<v Speaker 1>Warrior first, then it was Sid, and then ultimately he

<v Speaker 1>went to Leon White. But he came to the WWF

<v Speaker 1>as Sid Justice. He was part of the finish to

<v Speaker 1>the greatest Royal Rumble match of all time. They really

<v Speaker 1>thought that the fans would boost Sid when he dumped

<v Speaker 1>Hogan out of that ring. He was gone about a

<v Speaker 1>month after his WrestleMania match with Hogan. Either now, these

<v Speaker 1>two theories or scenarios that have been pitched. Either he

<v Speaker 1>quit over a failed drug test. A failed drug test,

<v Speaker 1>by the way, that goes back before WrestleMania, but they

<v Speaker 1>allowed him to work WrestleMania and then evidently the subsequent

<v Speaker 1>European tour. I mean, that's a little weird. You know,

<v Speaker 1>if he had failed a drug test and he was

<v Speaker 1>going to be suspended for it, you would think that

<v Speaker 1>you would suspend him right away, or at least immediately

<v Speaker 1>after WrestleMania, like get through WrestleMania and then take whatever

<v Speaker 1>action you're going to take. But they didn't. But supposedly

<v Speaker 1>they had confronted him about it, maybe they were going

<v Speaker 1>to suspend him, and he just he walked out, or

<v Speaker 1>to hear Sid tell it, it was after a disagreement

<v Speaker 1>with the Ultimate Warrior before a match. He did the match,

<v Speaker 1>and then after he packed his bag and he walked out.

<v Speaker 1>But he ended up back in WCW and he was

<v Speaker 1>supposed to beat Vader to win the world title at

<v Speaker 1>Star Kate in nineteen ninety three, but then came one

<v Speaker 1>of the more famous incidents in wrestling history where we

<v Speaker 1>nearly had two murders, the scissors incident overseas with Arn Anderson,

<v Speaker 1>and I know I've talked about this a few times

<v Speaker 1>over the years. It is one of the crazier stories

<v Speaker 1>in wrestling history. Sid was at the Hotel bar, as

<v Speaker 1>was Arn, so I'm sure you know there are probably

<v Speaker 1>a few at least beers, if not cocktails in and

<v Speaker 1>Sid made a comment about why he felt the company

<v Speaker 1>wasn't drawing, and he said it was because of old

<v Speaker 1>guys like Rick Flair. They won't step aside. And Arn's

<v Speaker 1>version is that Sid was bragging about holding up the

<v Speaker 1>company for a big pay raise and he was talking

<v Speaker 1>about how all these old fuckers need to retire. Meanwhile,

<v Speaker 1>Arn had just taken one hundred thousand dollars pay cut

<v Speaker 1>the year before, and so it rubbed him the wrong way.

<v Speaker 1>So the two of them had words, either Arned through

<v Speaker 1>a beer at Sit or Sid through a beer at Arn.

<v Speaker 1>Everybody got you know, got broken up. Everybody got sent

<v Speaker 1>back to their rooms. Two cold Scorpio is in his

<v Speaker 1>room and he hears a commotion outside. It's actually from downstairs,

<v Speaker 1>so that's how loud they were. He could hear them

<v Speaker 1>from from downstairs. So he goes out and he finds

<v Speaker 1>the hallway covered in blood like blood all over the walls,

<v Speaker 1>and Sid is standing over Arned with a pair of

<v Speaker 1>scissors in his hand that belonged to Arn. Apparently Arn

<v Speaker 1>was using them to trim his beard. Sid is the
