00:04:03.020 --> 00:04:04.140 1130. 00:04:04.140 --> 00:04:04.940 1130. 00:04:04.940 --> 00:04:06.300 Yes, eleven thirty. 00:04:06.300 --> 00:04:07.660 Uh we'll end our series. 00:04:07.660 --> 00:04:09.020 Look at Jesus. 00:04:09.020 --> 00:04:13.819 Um by this point in the ministry of Jesus, things are really starting to heat up. 00:04:13.819 --> 00:04:14.860 Jesus is uh 00:04:14.900 --> 00:04:18.660 He's finishing up the last bit of business that he's got to take care of. 00:04:19.060 --> 00:04:23.220 And he intentionally chooses to do that in Jerusalem. 00:04:23.220 --> 00:04:25.220 Jerusalem is the holy city. 00:04:25.139 --> 00:04:34.419 It's ironic when you think about it that the holy Son of God would be crucified in the city that was supposed to represent everything that was holy. 00:04:35.660 --> 00:04:36.940 It's crazy to me. 00:04:37.260 --> 00:04:43.740 It's always been interesting to me when we think about Holy Week, when we think about the triumphal entry. 00:04:43.660 --> 00:04:51.340 Is that as Jesus gets deeper into this supposed holy city, he finds so much in it that is not holy 00:04:51.720 --> 00:04:55.400 Jerusalem is supposed to be the epicenter of holiness. 00:04:55.400 --> 00:04:57.720 This is where they're celebrating Passover. 00:04:57.720 --> 00:05:02.440 They're commemorating everything that Yahweh did for them while they were slaves in Egypt. 00:05:02.340 --> 00:05:09.940 This is home to the holy people of God, but as Jesus gets deeper into this city, he finds so much wrong with it 00:05:10.139 --> 00:05:14.699 Last year on Punt Palm Sunday, I I preached a message called Nothing But Leaves. 00:05:14.699 --> 00:05:19.580 I don't know if you remember that, but it was on the passage where Jesus curses the fig tree. 00:05:19.520 --> 00:05:25.120 Because the fig tree wasn't producing the fruit that it appeared to be producing. 00:05:25.120 --> 00:05:30.240 The leaves of the fig tree implied that there was fruit on it. 00:05:30.240 --> 00:05:31.840 You know, just like when you 00:05:32.039 --> 00:05:36.840 You sing a Christian song, it implies you got some fruit to show for it. 00:05:36.840 --> 00:05:43.080 Or you take a discipleship class, or you're in Bible study, it implies you've got some fruit. 00:05:43.260 --> 00:05:53.260 The leaves attract Jesus, but as he gets closer, he finds no fruit and he curses it because it's pretending to be something and it's not. 00:05:53.320 --> 00:06:04.840 And there's a lot of people in the church, not our church, but in the church, who have all of these luscious, healthy-looking leaves. 00:06:04.500 --> 00:06:07.620 And they wave them around and people are impressed by them. 00:06:07.620 --> 00:06:10.660 They think, wow, what beautiful green, healthy leaves. 00:06:10.660 --> 00:06:12.340 Look at all the gifts 00:06:12.100 --> 00:06:18.420 Look at all the talent, look at, look at the way she sings, look at the way he speaks, look at the wisdom, look at look at the anointing. 00:06:18.420 --> 00:06:26.980 But as Jesus gets closer to these people, he finds no fruit to be shown for all the leaves that they wave around. 00:06:27.100 --> 00:06:39.020 And so, in the same way, Jesus, he's stepping into Jerusalem, this holy city, and he finds nothing but leaves in the lives of the religious leaders, the priests, the Pharisees, the teachers of the law. 00:06:39.020 --> 00:06:40.860 He finds religion. 00:06:40.539 --> 00:06:43.340 Masquerading as righteousness. 00:06:43.340 --> 00:06:45.099 And Jesus sees right through it. 00:06:45.099 --> 00:06:50.060 And then he walks into the outer courts of the temple. 00:06:50.039 --> 00:06:55.800 And what he finds is really troubling to his spirit to the point that he flips out. 00:06:55.800 --> 00:07:03.080 This is like a climactic moment in the ministry of Jesus where he lets us know he means business. 00:07:02.760 --> 00:07:07.720 Jesus ain't playing around with things that are supposed to be holy. 00:07:07.800 --> 00:07:10.360 And so that's that's where we we kick this off. 00:07:10.360 --> 00:07:16.120 If you would stand with me as we read this short passage, Mark 11, 15 through 19. 00:07:16.240 --> 00:07:27.840 It says, and they came to Jerusalem, and he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money changers. 00:07:27.560 --> 00:07:33.080 And the seats of those who sold pigeons, and he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temples. 00:07:33.080 --> 00:07:41.960 And he was teaching them and saying to them, Is it not written, My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations? 00:10:27.120 --> 00:10:28.880 We don't like it when Jesus. 00:10:29.200 --> 00:10:31.440 Messes up our plans. 00:10:31.440 --> 00:10:39.120 We don't like it when Jesus messes with our schedules and our agendas and he rearranges everything in a certain way. 00:10:39.120 --> 00:10:42.160 And we're like, Jesus, I like my things in a particular way. 00:10:42.120 --> 00:10:50.200 And so when when what we have in a lot of churches is Christians who they don't let Jesus get too close. 00:10:50.660 --> 00:10:55.300 Because we know that the closer he gets, the holier he's gonna ask us to be. 00:10:55.300 --> 00:10:56.500 And can we be honest? 00:10:56.500 --> 00:10:58.500 Can we just be honest this morning? 00:10:58.500 --> 00:11:02.180 The idea of holy living is a little bit uncomfortable 00:11:02.420 --> 00:11:06.660 To many of us, because it disrupts our lives. 00:11:06.660 --> 00:11:08.819 But you want to I want you to understand something. 00:11:08.819 --> 00:11:10.899 This isn't a message about you getting closer to God. 00:11:10.899 --> 00:11:11.779 This is not about that. 00:11:11.779 --> 00:11:13.940 This is about God getting closer to you 00:11:14.480 --> 00:11:17.360 This is about allowing Jesus get clo to get closer to you. 00:11:17.360 --> 00:11:19.920 See, because a lot of times we talk about getting closer to God. 00:11:19.920 --> 00:11:23.200 We talk about that in our time uh in our terms. 00:11:24.380 --> 00:11:28.300 So so when trouble comes, that's when we want to get closer to God. 00:11:28.300 --> 00:11:30.860 When we're in need, that's when we start to fast. 00:11:30.860 --> 00:11:32.140 That's when we start to seek Him. 00:11:32.140 --> 00:11:33.500 That's when we start to pray. 00:11:33.640 --> 00:11:37.640 When everything in our life is messing up, that's when you know what that's when I'm gonna come back to church. 00:11:37.640 --> 00:11:40.120 We we we want to get closer to God on our terms. 00:11:40.120 --> 00:11:41.400 This is not about that 00:11:41.779 --> 00:11:48.820 Because once you give yourself over to Jesus, you allow him to become Lord over your life. 00:11:48.820 --> 00:11:50.660 You give him permission. 00:11:50.640 --> 00:11:56.560 To disrupt some things in your life and to rearrange some things in your life. 00:11:56.560 --> 00:12:01.600 And if you harden your heart for too long after letting him in, 00:12:02.060 --> 00:12:05.980 Just like Israel was cut off, so can we be. 00:12:06.940 --> 00:12:13.579 So listen, we have to be okay with Jesus flipping tables that he finds offensive to his body. 00:12:14.580 --> 00:12:21.700 This uh this this story kind of depicts a different side of Jesus than what we're used to seeing you know in the gospels. 00:12:21.700 --> 00:12:26.980 Uh Jesus is always he's always pretty direct and not afraid to confront the religious leaders, but 00:12:27.060 --> 00:12:32.420 For the first time, we see Jesus not really being the gentleman that we usually describe him as being. 00:12:32.420 --> 00:12:33.460 You know how we say that a lot? 00:12:33.700 --> 00:12:35.300 Jesus is the gentleman. 00:12:35.420 --> 00:12:38.380 We're seeing here a fed up Jesus. 00:12:38.380 --> 00:12:43.980 He's he's messing things up, he's destroying property, he's using force. 00:12:43.980 --> 00:12:49.579 But notice notice this: he's not using force to force anybody into a relationship with him. 00:12:49.300 --> 00:12:51.460 That's that that's not what he's doing. 00:12:52.100 --> 00:12:54.820 He's not trying to force anybody to be holy. 00:12:54.820 --> 00:12:57.220 What he's doing is protecting, listen 00:12:57.160 --> 00:13:02.360 He's protecting that which was meant to be holy, that which belongs to the Father. 00:13:02.360 --> 00:13:06.520 Jesus is saying, this will not be defiled. 00:13:06.320 --> 00:13:09.280 If you don't want to be righteous, that's on you. 00:13:09.280 --> 00:13:20.560 If you don't want to be holy, Jesus, I'm not gonna make you, but the place that was designed to connect the people to the Father and the Father to the people that cannot be defiled. 00:13:20.120 --> 00:13:23.480 That has to be holy because it is holy. 00:13:23.480 --> 00:13:27.959 And so Jesus is walking into this temple, and he finds a lot of things wrong with it 00:13:27.940 --> 00:13:31.140 The temple was something that was consecrated. 00:13:31.140 --> 00:13:32.180 It was set apart. 00:13:32.180 --> 00:13:34.660 It was meant to be holy. 00:13:34.660 --> 00:13:40.740 But the people who were entrusted to maintain its holiness had defiled it. 00:13:40.640 --> 00:13:49.040 And so he walks into the temple and he notices in the outer courts, the outer courts of the temple was the place that was reserved for the Gentiles. 00:13:48.959 --> 00:13:52.480 This is where the Gentiles came to worship and pray. 00:13:52.480 --> 00:14:00.800 And Jesus walks into the outer courts of the temple and he finds a marketplace in the place that people are supposed to be worshiping. 00:14:00.880 --> 00:14:03.360 So there's two reasons that Jesus gets upset. 00:14:03.360 --> 00:14:07.600 Number one is the misuse of the temple. 00:14:07.600 --> 00:14:12.320 They were misusing the temple for what it was designed to be used for. 00:14:12.320 --> 00:14:15.120 Jesus says, this is a house of prayer. 00:14:15.380 --> 00:14:23.300 He's quoting from Isaiah 56, which says, These I will bring to my holy mountain and make them joyful in my house of prayer. 00:14:22.860 --> 00:14:30.540 Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar, for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all people. 00:14:31.640 --> 00:14:38.680 So the purpose for this portion of the temple was so that anybody in the temple could come in and worship. 00:14:38.680 --> 00:14:40.280 It didn't matter if you were not a Jew. 00:14:40.280 --> 00:14:41.160 This was a place 00:14:41.339 --> 00:14:48.139 made sacred, made holy, for all the people of every nation to come in and worship God. 00:14:48.139 --> 00:14:51.980 And Jesus walks in and he finds a marketplace. 00:14:51.980 --> 00:14:56.060 Now on this point, Jesus could have walked in, he could have found anything. 00:14:55.640 --> 00:15:00.600 He could have walked in, he could have found a park and and and kids were playing around. 00:15:00.600 --> 00:15:03.320 Maybe it was a playground, maybe it was restaurants and people were 00:15:03.459 --> 00:15:05.300 were eating there, maybe it was a bowling alley. 00:15:05.300 --> 00:15:07.620 It didn't it didn't really matter what it was. 00:15:07.620 --> 00:15:13.380 The point is that the temple wasn't being used in the way that it was designed to be used. 00:15:15.320 --> 00:15:21.640 It kind of grieves the Holy Spirit when the people who were designed to worship aren't worshiping. 00:15:23.140 --> 00:15:30.180 It grieves the Holy Spirit when the holy people of God are acting out of holiness. 00:15:32.500 --> 00:15:35.620 Because this is what we were designed for. 00:15:35.620 --> 00:15:36.660 So that was number one. 00:15:36.660 --> 00:15:43.940 The second reason Jesus gets upset is because the merchants are being allowed to exploit the people. 00:15:43.839 --> 00:15:45.199 Who just wanted to worship? 00:15:45.199 --> 00:15:49.040 Jesus says, but you have turned it into a den of robbers. 00:15:49.040 --> 00:15:53.920 This is a house of prayer, but you have turned it into a den of robbers. 00:15:54.440 --> 00:15:58.519 To run a temple, you gotta understand it took money, right? 00:15:58.519 --> 00:15:59.720 It took money. 00:15:59.720 --> 00:16:02.360 The temple had administrative costs and 00:16:02.660 --> 00:16:09.940 And in this day, the Jews had a temple tax that they were required to pay for all of the administrative costs in the temple. 00:16:09.940 --> 00:16:16.260 The problem was that they had to use a specific type of currency. 00:16:16.480 --> 00:16:18.640 That most people didn't carry. 00:16:18.640 --> 00:16:21.200 And so the scripture talks about money changers. 00:16:21.200 --> 00:16:25.520 They allowed money changers to be in the outer courts of the temple. 00:16:25.339 --> 00:16:32.540 So that people would come in to pay their temple tax, they could they could exchange their currency for the right type of currency to pay the temple tax. 00:16:32.540 --> 00:16:38.699 Well, the problem was they were charging crazy fees just to exchange the money. 00:16:38.520 --> 00:16:53.000 On top of that, it was required for everybody who was going to enter the temple to bring with them a sacrifice, either a an uh a goat or uh a calf or a lamb or if you were poor a dove. 00:16:52.920 --> 00:16:57.560 But the problem was a lot of people were coming from all over the Judean region. 00:16:57.560 --> 00:17:01.880 It wasn't practical for all of them to come in and bring an animal sacrifice. 00:17:01.600 --> 00:17:03.519 So the religious leader said, Okay, you know what? 00:17:03.519 --> 00:17:08.799 We'll we'll set up some tables here so that we can sell some of these animal sacrifices. 00:17:08.799 --> 00:17:12.720 And again, they were charging crazy fees. 00:17:12.720 --> 00:17:15.439 Like when you go to the Astral's game and you pay 00:17:15.740 --> 00:17:17.819 Fifteen bucks for a hot dog, right? 00:17:20.380 --> 00:17:25.980 And so this this these are the issues that Jesus kind of walks into. 00:17:25.860 --> 00:17:36.340 The religious leaders, those who were expected to protect the temple, were misusing it, and they were tolerating exploitation in the temple. 00:17:36.580 --> 00:17:38.820 No wonder Jesus flipped out, man. 00:17:39.620 --> 00:17:41.380 There was no fear. 00:17:41.380 --> 00:17:47.140 There was no reverence for the holy and consecrated things. 00:17:47.140 --> 00:17:50.660 How many of us walk into this place with no fear and no reverence?
