talk about some of the events that have gone on in Greenville big events actually the past couple of weeks so we had the SEC Southeastern Conference ladies basketball tournament just a few weeks ago and then we had a portion of the NC Double a men's basketball tournament the entire NCAA not just the SEC for the men's but a nice portion of that that involved some major schools I believe Duke was in there and a few others sometimes North Carolina is makes it when Greenville has it I don't think North Carolina was in our area this year as you can tell I haven't really been following March Madness because I haven't been having the time for it and I don't really follow college basketball anyway I'm sorry that's just I have to I can't just follow every single thing all the time that being said we need to talk about the fact that Greenville hosted both of these events and what the response has been so after the events happened my social media and I'm not talking about like Facebook and Instagram I'm talking about Twitter which is the platform I'm the most active on also known as X for whatever reason Elon Musk changed the name to X I don't understand why but whatever his business he can do whatever he wants with it all over all over X I was seeing all sorts of things about Greenville from people that I had that I either follow or know about that have no affiliation to Greenville so this is always interesting to me when worlds collide right when I when I've got you know people that I know on a national level from one way or another well don't know them personally but know of them have followed them and then they start talking about the very city that I live in which is a fairly inconsequential city right Greenville is not you know New York City it's not San Francisco it's not you know a mover and shaker kind of city where you typically get into the national headlines and so and usually when a small city get makes the national headlines it's for bad reasons right you know we had you know the area of the low country in South Carolina that that made the headlines because of the whole murder family and you know rumors and allegations what not that happened with regard to them I'm not even gonna get into all of that I don't know this is going off the rails here but it was crazy to me how much of an outpouring of a response there was that came from these two events and I'm gonna start with I didn't hear as much from the SEC women's tournament and that's not surprising right cause that's a much smaller event first off then I don't mean this in any way but the viewership for women's college basketball is not nearly as high as men's like that's just a statistical thing it's not an opinion look at the stats that's true women's basketball is really growing by leaps and bounds right now I'm actually really excited for that and actually I had the opportunity to volunteer cause I'm a volunteer with the city of Greenville I was able to volunteer a little bit with that tournament with the SEC women's tournament and I ended up getting free courtside tickets for a few of the games I got to see Kentucky I got to see Oklahoma I got to see I think Georgia and LSU I believe that those were the four schools that I end up getting to see and I had an absolute blast it's the first time that I have ever been to a college basketball game period men's or women's and I had so much fun it was such a good event the quality of basketball was really phenomenal I had a the there was one player for Kentucky who just ended up playing just incredible basketball and just had a blast took a bunch of really cool pictures of her and a few others and the games were physical the game there was good shooting good defense good ball movement you know I used to play basketball so I know a little bit about the sport and I just thought that that was a lot of fun and it brought I saw people from all over wearing all sorts of different jerseys Texas and obviously South Carolina and Oklahoma and Georgia these other schools that I mentioned all parading around Greenville for that event and I just thought that that that was phenomenal highly highly recommend next time we have some sort of women's basketball tournament here in Greenville if you're in this area attend right there there's still a good bit of seating left at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena you could get really good seats for really reasonable prices I ended up courtside for free because of my volunteer work and listen being courtside is really cool I you know that was also a first for me I'd never done that before and I just had I just had a really good time doing that but the real outpouring that came was after the men's tournament because that you know is a very big it's a national event and obviously everyone's got their brackets that they're filling out and all of that and so people are following these events very very closely and so one of the biggest responses and I'll actually I'll just share this on if you're watching on YouTube so you don't have to just stare at my face the whole time I'm going to there's something weird going on with zoom which is the platform that I use here let's see if this works nope that didn't work I don't know why okay here we go here we go alright zoom was weird there for a second so the first big one was Tracy Wolfson who is a who is a reporter with CBS Sports and which is obviously a big deal right she said on Twitter this is on March 22nd so I'm recording this March 29th this is a week ago this could be a little bit old by the time you guys get it but I wanted to get out that podcast last week that interview with Daniel Rumfelt because I think that was really timely but regardless I want to cover this as well because I think this is interesting Tracy Wolsten says thank you Greenville that was a blast you should be an NCA tournament site every year between the downtown the parks the restaurants the arena and the people it's the perfect place for basketball fans to come together hope to be back soon that's quite the statement okay Tracy Wolfson this is not someone who is just not going you know it's just like unaware of a basketball venues and A&A places to see sporting events as you can see in her ex profile she's the CBS Sports lead NFL slash NCA basketball reporter like she gets around she knows she knows venues she knows cities she knows places where these events happened for her to say that Greenville needs to be an annual destination for the NCAA Tournament obviously is a very big deal then we have another one here the and there are more than just these two but these are really the big ones this is Kyle Tucker and in case you want their handles Tracy Wilson is just at Tracy Wilson on X Kyle Tucker is at Kyle Tucker CBB Kyle Tucker is with 24 7 Sports the director of college basketball content at 24 7 and I believe that that's what that means and if you're looking on my screen you can see that that I commented on here but he said I had no idea Greenville South Carolina is an awesome city legit really cool downtown district great restaurants and good vibes I feel like this is the best kept secret on the East Coast question Mark probably a question Mark because he probably when he typed that out he was like maybe I'd out of be careful and not be too bold my response was as a Greenville based realtor I can say the secret is very much out lol locals absolutely despise how many people are moving here from other parts of the US but these two tweets had just incredible viewership so Kyle Tucker's tweet had over 734,000 views 4.7 thousand likes 348 retweets 906 comments that's a lot Tracy Wolfson's tweet hold on let me go back I've got I've got an article here that I that I cheated from that had both of these in it but I saw them before the article was written her tweet had 126.7 thousand views 3,000 likes 308 retweets 77 comments so not as much as Kyle Tucker's did the tweet by Kyle Tucker this was his most interactive like the most engagement he's gotten on a tweet in Twitter in like years so that tells you something there's something going on there's some kind of traction that was happening as a result of you know what he said and I think you know obviously regardless of the backlash and there's a lot of backlash which I'll get into here in a second from locals as I already alluded to I just think that it's awesome for people to get exposed to Greenville that's one of the things that I like about being a realtor is to be able to as a core function of my job to expose people to how awesome this city is in so many different ways and it doesn't have everything green we've talked about this many times Greenville doesn't have great public transportation we don't have professional sports teams the international airport is great but limited offerings in terms of non stop flights and so we don't have every single thing that you know a humongous city like Atlanta has but the but the reason why Atlanta has all of those things is because it is a humongous city and it takes like an hour to get from one end of Atlanta to the other it takes barely an hour if you're if you're a slow walker to walk from one end of the city of Greenville to the other well I shouldn't say the city of Greenville but like downtown Greenville the edge of downtown Greenville to the other and so I think that that is something and again I'm comparing apples and oranges right I'm not talking about you know Downtown Atlanta doesn't take an hour to drive across downtown Atlanta but you know what I'm saying Atlanta is much bigger and with that there's a lot more that it has to offer from the standpoint of being a small city being a large city but Greenville packs so much punch for being a small city and having the still the small city vibe to it there's still a lot of parking available sometimes you do have to pay for parking now me personally I almost never have to pay for parking cause I know all the spots I know all the little secret little locations where you can typically find sneak in a parking spot somewhere there those still exist I've been to a lot of cities even like Nashville which that kind of street parking you just don't find anymore it's gone right those days are gone and maybe those days will be gone for Greenville at some point in the future I hope not but it's very possible now as I was seeing these different tweets coming through there were some complaints some people would go on there and chirp you know with their different complaints and really the main one that I heard was regarding the arena the Bon Secours Wellness Arena and food prices at the arena now of course the arena is set to get a massive renovation in the near future if you don't know about that go look it up look up Bon Secours Wellness Arena renovation or whatever you'll see there's several hundred million dollars about to be pumped into the well as we call it here locally because Bond Score Wellness Arena is a long name but the well is about to get several hundred million dollars pumped into it took a while for them to secure that because county council you know didn't want to grant them that money didn't want to you know assist with that at all which is I see it both ways but the arena for sure needs some kind of renovation right regardless of where you think the money should come from and the government's gonna get that money back the arena needs to be renovated and it is going to be renovated however the food prices are a legitimate concern right if you want like for instance you know like a sandwich there you're talking about 15 to 20 bucks at least if you want an alcoholic beverage that is I think beers are like 12 dollars each maybe I know that like they have those canned like Moscow mules and like margaritas that are like premixed just out of the can those are like 18 to 20 dollars like these prices are absurd and personally I don't think that I think it's extortion not legally but like just from my opinion it feels extortionary and I do think I do hope that they reconsider that when they do the renovation and of course there are additional plans to expand around the entire arena as well and I'm really excited about this that that that entire arena complex is going to be completely renovated to make it a shopping and lodging district there's gonna be an amphitheater there outdoor amphitheater for concerts and it it's going to become one of the next big hubs of downtown that area is going to be one of the next big hubs of downtown and then I believe that the County Square area actually is going to be one of the next big hubs of downtown as well currently they're both on the fringes of downtown but they're both ready to be connected they're both ready to be integrated like it won't take much for them to really become just a part of downtown and again some people aren't gonna like to hear this right people don't like to hear about urban sprawl but the reality is this where most people don't want the sprawl to happen is in the suburbs and the rural areas if we contain it to the city if we and really it's more so if we contain it to downtown that that's a win for everyone right cause you can just not go downtown if you don't like it if you don't like it just avoid it nobody's forcing you to go downtown and obviously if they add more housing downtown which they will be doing that theoretically helps out with the rest of the county that that people aren't spreading into east side Greenville and into you know Travelers Rest and into easily and all these areas where people are just like we're closed we can't take any more people so I think those are legitimate criticisms and I really hope that some of these changes some of these things that are happening particularly to that area around the arena and to the arena itself will make a difference and maybe you know as that area you know I mentioned the food prices inside the arena part of that is that there's no restaurants around the Boston Core Wellness Arena currently not no restaurants in fact walking to the arena I did it for the first time ever when I went to that SEC women's tournament because again I was like okay there so there's a parking garage right there at the arena and that and that parking garage is phenomenal I mean literally you step right out of the parking garage and you're like basically in the concourse super convenient it's one of my favorite things about where the arena is and how they how they planned all that they did a good job with that and I think they're gonna add a lot more parking well I they have to add a lot more parking to do what they're planning to do but I was pretty confident that I wouldn't have to pay for parking that I could find parking pretty close to the arena and I did and so that's what I ended up doing I ended up getting free parking and then just walking to the arena and the walk it was the first time I'd ever done it you have to walk basically to the far end of Main Street basically past Noma Square if you know where that is and then you make a right and you walk all the way down maybe a quarter to a half mile something like that and then you're at the arena but that's a very busy street right there and again it doesn't it doesn't feel like you're on you're downtown anymore because it's just cars and traffic and nothing to do nowhere to shop nowhere to go like the only reason that you're heading down there is if you're walking towards the well and so that's something that I'm really hoping that all of this you know as that area gets renovated and that gateway project into downtown Greenville gets actualize and we actually see it coming together and restaurants and stores going into place I think that that's going to completely change the entire dynamic about all of this some of the things I enjoyed when looking at some of the feedback was how many people commented that they just had no idea that South Carolina had nice spots in it which makes me makes me laugh and I you know obviously there's Charleston there are some a few people that were just like Greenville's nice but Charleston's better I think it's just two kind of different flavors I I'm not gonna throw any shade at Charleston but most people that live in Greenville would never live in Charleston and vice versa these are Charleston is a completely different you know it's a coastal kind of college kind of military e and very medical oriented kind of town and Greenville is just very different right we you guys know what Greenville is we've talked about it is not any of those things at the end of the day and so I don't I don't get into arguments with people over whether Greenville is better than Charleston or vice versa it's just two very different flavor cities and it depends on what flavor that you prefer and of course you got the Greenvillians in the comments saying stay away we're closed we'll talk about that in a second several said the NCA should always be included should always include Greenville as a tournament host and of course we had a few complaining that well there's too much traffic I've already left Greenville don't go there I don't know how many of those people were being legitimate or not and then there were plenty of people that said that they'd be adding Greenville to the list of places they will consider moving to whenever they escape the large metro area that they are in and sometimes the locals were not particularly friendly to these people so let's just have a little fun let's actually look at some of the comments on Kyle Tucker's post alright so I this is I'm just gonna look at these you know just randomly so Oldsmobile and I commented to Oldsmobile because this is an absurd comment said so this is in response to Kyle Tucker saying that Greenville feels like the best kept secret on the East Coast Oldsmobile says which is at NFT Polly no thanks it isn't all that awesome the state needs some infrastructure improvements in addition please add another lane to I ninety five and repair the right lane terrible road conditions night and day when you leave South Carolina for Georgia now not all of this is wrong the state does need infrastructure improvements and there is a difference when you leave South Carolina for Georgia but I have no idea what the reference to I ninety five is I ninety five does not go through Greenville so Clemson hype at Clemson hype says he's lying Greenville sucks do not move here horrible city stay far away okay this is a greenvillian trying to tell people that that Greenville's terrible when because they don't want people to know that Greenville's actually awesome can ard at card s C K a R d s C South Carolina has exceeded recommended capacity Fire Marshal said so very witty Seth Weathers it's because it's one of the only largest cities that's run by Republicans and with a majority white population which is why it's clean and safer than most cities we had to go here right Seth Weathers we had to go here and honestly almost nothing that he said is right our first off Greenville city is extremely diverse ethnically and additionally it has a majority Democrat City council so that's an yes our mayor is Republican but all of that is absurd I probably need to be a little bit more careful and selective rather than just reading these straight down the line but Seth is just at Seth Weathers has just has no idea what he's talking about here his profile just for you guys to know CEO conservative dads at ultra right beer I don't know what and Border Wall Tequila over 2 million beers sold on a mission order online below thank you South weather's I don't think that you're a real person oh we have Nancy Mace in the comments it's beautiful robust town governor someone running for governor this year Miss Nancy Mace Christian mom of 2 Citadel grad former Waffle House waitress running for governor of South Carolina Nicole Auerbach she's at NBC Sports lead college football insider said go to Sobies if you haven't yet Nicole knows Nicole knows Sobie's is a great option if you want some southern food that is just on a next level Sobie's is one of my go to I'm gonna skip to Dan Wilkin who is a senior writer for Yahoo Sports covering college sports says check out Trap Door great bar another phenomenal recommendation from Dan Wilkin Trap Door is really a great place to go to let's see here it's trying to see if there's any well Kelly McCarthy South Carolina is closed no one should move here Roger Hoover shh please don't tell anyone another one like that Kyle Thompson that's really terrible you shouldn't come here high crime no jobs lots of homelessness and it's full glad you enjoyed your trip though Congressman William Timmons my congressman responded glad you enjoyed your visit so forth and so on let's look at the comments and under Tracy Wilson let's see here Brian Rice who is a sports talk person for the volunteers exactly why it is a permanent site for SEC women's basketball tournament actually I didn't know that I just Learned that so I will be going I just said next time SEC women's basketball is in Greenville you need to go looks like you're gonna be going with me so hit me up let me know I can hook you up possibly with some courtside seats he said plenty of accommodations everything is walkable and the city embraces the event Congressman Timmons again I don't know who he had just going on these saying glad you enjoyed your visit let's see here anything else interesting Tar Heel dog at boxer fan x 2 you're welcome Tracy now kindly take down this post before someone gets the idea to move here Lady K at Lady KHL thank you for visiting please don't move here we are full Scott Griffin oh here we go Scott Jr 5 5 4 5 4 2 2 7 Greenville is a nicer city than Charleston it is just he's just rage baiting let's see what the comments are under here Connor at Connor p 8 6 4 that 8 6 4 is suspicious that that's a Greenville area code right there this is such a bad take Greenville is nicer than Park Circle but Charleston Mount Pleasant Daniel Island Sullivan's Island Kiawah see Brooke Wadmalo all clear Greenville by a mile I'll Greenville I'll give Greenville the nod over Asheville though Scott Griffin replied Ashville is out of control the beautiful city has been ruined that's sad I haven't been to Ashville in a couple years I don't think that that's entirely true Duke at Osprey Media 8 4 3 says can't park a yacht in Greenville so says Scott Griffin ghost legit at G Legit 99 said that's a wild take as someone who lives close to Greenville nah and then chisel at chisel I don't know how to pronounce it or and I'm not gonna spell it says that's debatable alright so we got that debate let's see here bomber jacket at Bomber Jacket 5 you're being gracious but they don't want the recognition most southeastern cities are seeing mass immigration folks mainly from the northeast the influx of monoculture unfortunately makes it feel like takeover these cities appreciate the love but don't want the publicity that's a very based take at Bomber Jacket 5 and listen the fact that you didn't just go in there and say we're full don't talk about us anymore blah blah stay away high crime it sucks it's terrible you know people just saying these things in order to you know maybe somewhat be funny but also trying to discourage people from coming here Bomber Jacket actually just distinctly said exactly what's true we do appreciate the love but don't want the publicity now in in my case I think the publicity is a good thing too and I know the city wants it and I think that the county if they fully appreciated the economic impact of these events which they don't appear to but I think if the county like fully embraced that that they would also realize you know what this publicity is a good thing a 59 0 9 at medic 1 2 8 0 9 7 says did you go to Coffee Underground also an excellent choice let me see the comments under here Frank Hamrick said at coach Hamrick doesn't say what he's a coach of but he says this is one of my favorite places in Greenville if you like Bourbon you must go to neat also good suggestion so some solid options up and here we go not Bill Belichick at NYL Bagman says you obviously don't have to deal with abnormally small concourse he's talking about that's a that's a complaint about the well obviously the small concourses I don't personally think the well concourses are very small they do get crowded but listen I was in the old Yankee Stadium you wanna talk about a small concourse you should have seen what old the 0 the OG Yankee Stadium was like you could barely you could barely have 3 people walking through there at the same time I think that the that the concourse at the well is fine would it be great if it was a little bit larger sure but you know we don't have a professional sports team in Greenville our college teams don't go to the well very often so I think the concourse is fine all things considering we have someone with an Islanders logo Dave McBride at jet fan d which that just catches my attention because obviously person from the northeast so don't hate on him he says great city been several times great food options plus oh this is interesting fryer Dwight Langecker is there that that's a very interesting reference as you can see I follow the fryer langecker I guess that's how you pronounce it very interesting person former Baptist turned Catholic and then someone responds yes they have New York pizza and links to Frankie's New York Pizza we've got a lot of other good New York pizza as well beyond Frankie's I'm kind of partial to Tabata Bing on which of road but there are other really phenomenal options as well so anyway I don't know if that's interesting to any of you guys but just a little glimpse behind the veil of what's been happening on social media since the SEC women's and since the NC Double a men's came to Greenville a lot of positive press a lot of excitement in general for the area by people that apparently had never been to Greenville had no idea what was here all that we had to offer some locals were rude I didn't get into all of the rude comments we need to do better about that guys there we be like that that what was that guy bomber jacket 5 or whatever his name was be more like that guy have some nuance in your discussion don't just be rude to people the moment that someone from outside of the area starts talking good about Greenville that doesn't do anyone any good just being rude just because you want to keep our area small listen none of us want Greenville to turn into a New York City or Chicago or San Francisco or even an Atlanta or even a Charlotte it it's not going to I can I can assure you that now the best way to ensure that it doesn't happen is if you listen to my interview with Daniel Rumsfeld to make sure that we have a unified development ordinance he talked a lot about that like these are the sorts of things that we need to do in order to pave the way in order to have a plan for future development and the city has done a good job with that the county not so much county needs to figure out what they're doing and not just make it willy nilly and not just make it about well we want to be able to just be able to authorize or unauthorized development piecemeal you know based on subjective criteria there needs to be more objectivity more planning and all of that and all of this I think is good overall as long as we have all of that all of that recognition is good overall as long as we have all of that planning in place so thank you guys so much for listening that's all I have for today's episode please hit me up my contact information in the show notes and please like great review subscribe to the show don't miss future episodes we will talk to you guys again next time!
