[SPEAKER_02]: Hello everybody, based on America Hot Sheet Show, Ian Kendall, Jeff Ponds.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm JJ Cooper and we're excited to join you today because today, we are we are just around the corner for the trade deadline all the rumors are heating up
[SPEAKER_02]: We do want to get to something a little bit first though because we also had the draft signing deadline has coming on and I got to be honest with you.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm old.
[SPEAKER_02]: I remember when when we used to have a countdown clock at baseball america.com for the side deadline because it would be middite and we would be waiting because there would be like six seven eight first rounders who wouldn't sign until the very last minute.
[SPEAKER_02]: Now, we're in a situation where two top 12 round players did not sign.
[SPEAKER_02]: Logan Schmidt, Adenak, the only two top 10 round picks who did not sign.
[SPEAKER_02]: The Guardian's first, the second round, or Logan Schmidt, most prominent player didn't who's going to decide now whether he goes to LSU or whether he goes to a junior college.
[SPEAKER_02]: But I would say that overall, like the reality of it is, is it's a signing deadline.
[SPEAKER_02]: We'll get in more than that.
[SPEAKER_02]: We've got a lot more draft content over the next few months, but today we're going to spend our time on the Trade Deadline, and so let's go to the first move.
[SPEAKER_02]: We are talking Trade Deadline, it is six days away.
[SPEAKER_02]: We've seen a couple of moves, but I got to be honest, nothing that gets you excited yet, but we do expect that to be coming.
[SPEAKER_02]: And I just want to start it, you know, we want to hear your suggestions, your questions, your comments, your trades that you would propose.
[SPEAKER_02]: We like kind of evaluating those, but as see we already got some good questions in there.
[SPEAKER_02]: So thank you.
[SPEAKER_02]: We will get to those.
[SPEAKER_02]: But okay, I'm kind of like leading the leading you all here when I asked this because you know what I think about this, but.
[SPEAKER_02]: Our teams have they gotten too cautious about making big swings at the deadline.
[SPEAKER_02]: Do you guys think Ian, what do you think?
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a great question because obviously you've done some great reporting over a baseball America in the past a couple of days with all of the transactions and everything kind of running through the history of them.
[SPEAKER_01]: And as we've seen over the last few years, there's just not been very many
[SPEAKER_01]: major prospects traded, you know, you have the outliers, like the Leo different East trade, but at the time, you know, top 100 prospects are just not getting dealt anymore.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think the end result is kind of like what we're seeing is that, you know, there are certain baseline number of trades that happen every year, but it's largely the the guys moving seem to be more around the edges.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's, you know, it's your relief types, it's your utility in field, their types, back end starters.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think those just don't
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, they don't get the biggest return.
[SPEAKER_01]: Those are not the guys you're trading a top 100 prospect for because I think teams have gotten smarter, you know, learn from their mistakes of a decade or more ago when teams used to do things like that.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so now, you know, you have a few outlier deals, again, the soda, I think is probably the biggest one.
[SPEAKER_01]: But for the most part, I think teams have gotten cautious.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it's just with how the economics of the game are going, you know, there's just such a value that having cost-controlled talent can bring in teams or hesitant to, you know, deal too many of those top guys away, especially if they're close to majorly ready.
[SPEAKER_02]: Jeff, the other question I would kind of ask with that is, is like, I feel like that we don't see many top hundred prospects moved.
[SPEAKER_02]: And I feel like that there's also a lot of trades that happen especially on the final day for the deadline that could better be described as salary dumps, disguised as prospect trades, right?
[SPEAKER_02]: Where, I mean, obviously Carlos Correa for Matt Bluski last year would be the extreme example of this.
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, they were just like, well, we have to have someone go back in the trade.
[SPEAKER_02]: But I think that like,
[SPEAKER_02]: I do do fans need to understand kind of like the likelihood of a prospect panning out when you get outside the top under, but especially if you get outside like the top 30s for an organization, like do you think that sometimes there's a little bit almost too much expectation that something's going to pan out?
[SPEAKER_04]: Um, yeah, but I think you know, hopes brings eternal, most of the time that these, you know, deals are getting done.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's a player that's produced for a team over the course as several seasons.
[SPEAKER_04]: Sometimes it's a big, a big young star, like we saw Juan Soto, we've seen players like Mason Miller move.
[SPEAKER_04]: So fans want to believe that prospects are going to pan out and they're going to reach, they're 90th percentile sort of outcome.
[SPEAKER_04]: More often than not that doesn't happen.
[SPEAKER_04]: That's not to say that
[SPEAKER_04]: there aren't teams who are making really smart buys outside of a team's top 10 because that would sort of eliminate the yard on Alvarez return or if for it this wasn't a deadline deal but if for NATO to tease deal for James Shields, you know players that maybe weren't considered top 10 players in a given system.
[SPEAKER_04]: I do think those are years ago now, right?
[SPEAKER_04]: I think there's less secrets now than there ever has been.
[SPEAKER_04]: There's more information available.
[SPEAKER_04]: There's more video available of everything.
[SPEAKER_04]: I just think that we are more aware teams are certainly more aware than they've ever been before.
[SPEAKER_04]: They're more cautious about the types of prospects that they trade.
[SPEAKER_04]: We don't see those top.
[SPEAKER_04]: 50.
[SPEAKER_04]: I'll say the top half of the top 100.
[SPEAKER_04]: Those guys don't move very often.
[SPEAKER_04]: Leo de Vries last year was a real outlier in terms of what his prospects status was and the fact that he did move in a big deal.
[SPEAKER_04]: We got some big fish out there, though, this year.
[SPEAKER_04]: We have Terek Scooble and some others that could potentially move.
[SPEAKER_04]: That might swing the momentum quite a bit.
[SPEAKER_04]: So, you know, depending on sort of how the pendulum swings back and forth,
[SPEAKER_04]: Baseball is funny, nature is funny, it kind of course corrects, you know, we could maybe see some deadlines, some big deadline deals happen.
[SPEAKER_04]: Somebody's going to take down the Dodgers, right?
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, some of those are going to try, but I think the Dodgers are also going to try to fight back as well.
[SPEAKER_02]: I think we can feel comfortable with that.
[SPEAKER_02]: Speaking of that, looking at the national league.
[SPEAKER_02]: We mentioned like AJ Preller has kind of provided a lot of the entertainment for fans at the trade deadline year after year, whether it's trading for a Mason Miller or whether it's trading for a Juan Soto.
[SPEAKER_02]: This year's a little different.
[SPEAKER_02]: When you look at this Jeff, we're talking about there a 500 team, but they're also only a game and a half back.
[SPEAKER_02]: While card, are they sellers
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, I think that's the burning question, right?
[SPEAKER_04]: Because the excitement of the trade deadline has kind of been fueled by AJ Preller here for a whole bunch of years.
[SPEAKER_04]: And he's typically someone who's willing to make some big swings, or take some big swings, there's
[SPEAKER_04]: a player in Mason Miller that he made a big deal for.
[SPEAKER_04]: We've heard rumor that he could potentially move them, then we heard that he's not going to move them, and it could be some other players.
[SPEAKER_04]: You know, it's interesting because with the expanded wild card system, so many more teams are in the mix than they're used to be.
[SPEAKER_04]: And it's a game or two here or there and as we saw with the Red Sox last month, teams can go on long stretches.
[SPEAKER_04]: They can go on these long runs.
[SPEAKER_04]: The Tigers a few years ago, you know, that that advanced and made the playoffs and made some noise in the playoffs.
[SPEAKER_04]: That was a team that got hot.
[SPEAKER_04]: I think even the Blue Jays to an extent last year, that's another team.
[SPEAKER_04]: So it's tough to know.
[SPEAKER_04]: I would imagine that Preller is going to look at,
[SPEAKER_04]: Whereas team is, but also the type of conversations that are being had, this really does seem like a seller's market right now, where there's so many buyers, there's teams that are buyers this year that have pretty good farm systems and good prospects if they could potentially move, if those teams start to bid against each other for a school or others, I think we could see some pretty big swings.
[SPEAKER_02]: So we're gonna hit a lot more of these comments, but there's one that kind of teases up for something we wanna talk about right here, which has been full in camp, regular viewer, thank you Ben.
[SPEAKER_02]: Dodgers don't have room for all those outfits, or seem like it's time to sell high on a couple of them.
[SPEAKER_02]: Ian, I'm gonna propose to you, we talked about it before the show.
[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe there's a twist on this, and I think could you use the Curtis Mead trade as an example of why this may be?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, when you look at the market right now, one of the biggest issues is the lack of right-handed position players.
[SPEAKER_01]: Curtis Mead has obviously already been dealt.
[SPEAKER_01]: And since that trade, J. Langa Lears, Tornmanus Giss, and Spencer Steer has also gone in the injured list.
[SPEAKER_01]: And they were two of the prime trade candidates that looked like heading into the deadline.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, now the market is looking a lot thinner than it did before.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Jerry Payne is not being moved.
[SPEAKER_01]: The Astros have said, maybe you can get Hunter Goodman, maybe you can get Zach Net,
[SPEAKER_01]: What if the Dodgers put someone like Towsker Hernandez on the block?
[SPEAKER_01]: This is, you know, they've done this before.
[SPEAKER_01]: You look at the Michael Bush trade where they traded from a MLB surplus position and added prospects and then just backfilled from someone already in the organization.
[SPEAKER_01]: Similarly, they did it with Gavin Luxe and that trade they added Mike's throat up and the Michael Bush trade they added Zai your hope.
[SPEAKER_01]: I kind of wonder if the Dodgers might field offers or someone like Towsker Hernandez.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then backfill that with Ho-Sway to Paula, because Ho-Sway to Paula is one of our top five prospects over at baseball America.
[SPEAKER_01]: And he is real five eligible this off season.
[SPEAKER_01]: So if he's going to be half that, be out into the 40 man anyway.
[SPEAKER_01]: If the Dodgers think that he's ready to make that jump from AA, which is big gift.
[SPEAKER_01]: But, I mean, he's checking all the boxes there.
[SPEAKER_01]: I kind of wonder if they will feel the officer Hernandez because with how thin the right hand in market is, they probably could get a very, very nice return for him.
[SPEAKER_02]: I do think it's fascinating to think that the Dodgers could end up trading to ask her and by the way, probably eating some money in the deal, but then getting better prospect back and by doing so, end up adding to their farm system, death, and bringing up a guy into Paula who could end up being better over the rest of the year, and definitely should be probably better over the next few years as well.
[SPEAKER_02]: There we see a lot of trade proposals out there.
[SPEAKER_02]: We are going to get to them several Dodgers proposals.
[SPEAKER_02]: I think Dodger's fans want to see Terri Scooble in, you get the team that has everything.
[SPEAKER_02]: They want another ace, but we will get to those right after this quick break.
[SPEAKER_03]: Big second app of the season coming up, there might be a hot ticket, a rivalry series, a sold-out experience they need to get your hands on.
[SPEAKER_03]: And Seekyke is the spot for that.
[SPEAKER_03]: You can find good pricing.
[SPEAKER_03]: They help you with the pricing, green dot good, red dot, not as good.
[SPEAKER_03]: And they help you with your view of the seat for some big matchups coming up and August September and eventually leading up to playoffs.
[SPEAKER_00]: Why would you not use Seaky if you want to view from your seat?
[SPEAKER_00]: You want to know if it's a good seat, if it's a good deal, it has all of it on the app.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's easy to use, it's one-click boom.
[SPEAKER_00]: You buy the tickets, they send them right to, you get them on the app, and then you can go check out whatever game.
[SPEAKER_00]: Whatever you're a fan of, you can go to whether it's baseball, whether it's concerts.
[SPEAKER_00]: Whatever you're into, you can find a ticket and you can always try to find the green dot on Seaky.
[SPEAKER_03]: And for MLB tickets, you can get 10% off with that promo code for running all season long territory, 1-0, that's territory 10 off your next set of MLB tickets at C-Geek.
[SPEAKER_03]: Make sure you click the link in the description to download the app and have the code automatically added to your account so you can use it later.
[SPEAKER_02]: Speaking of teams that could do something surprising, Jeff, when we look at the Mariners, who kind of, I would say, are I saw a comment on there.
[SPEAKER_02]: If the Mariners aren't a little bit in desperation mode right now, I don't know who is, they should be.
[SPEAKER_02]: But they also have kind of more starting pitching than one team can use, especially when you throw in Kate Anderson, Ryan Slot or sitting there at W.A.
[SPEAKER_02]: And by the way, the Mariners don't use AAA usually on the way up for their starting pitching prospects.
[SPEAKER_02]: What do you think the Mariners could do?
[SPEAKER_02]: What would be smart for the Mariners to do you think?
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, and I think someone had asked me the other day, are the Mariners buyers or sellers?
[SPEAKER_04]: Sorry, Boston accent, crypto, crypto, and then that one.
[SPEAKER_04]: But I think you look at,
[SPEAKER_04]: where this team is at in this division, how kind of bad the AL West is right now, there's a kind of three teams kind of just hanging around that a good wheat can flip stuff pretty quickly.
[SPEAKER_04]: They were aggressive this off-season and going and acquiring Brennan gentlemen, some other pieces, and I think you look at that rotation.
[SPEAKER_04]: They have the six-man rotation.
[SPEAKER_04]: They have K to Anderson who, as you mentioned, they don't really use AAA, and I don't think there's any reason to send them into the PCL.
[SPEAKER_04]: He's done nothing but dominate every level of competition he's faced for the last 24 months.
[SPEAKER_04]: So at this point, you're kind of just waiting on when.
[SPEAKER_04]: If they want to do that, there's probably enough innings left, but they can kind of use him.
[SPEAKER_04]: If they trade one of these starters, you have a breakout in Emerson Hancock who has looked pretty good.
[SPEAKER_04]: They've had so many starters.
[SPEAKER_04]: They've been running this six-man rotation.
[SPEAKER_04]: So you are dealing from a position of strength, if they decide not to trade Amazon Hancock, they could certainly trade Louis Castillo, and I think there'd be plenty of teams that are interested, pitching once you get to the deadline.
[SPEAKER_04]: And you're talking about teams that might be one starter away from having that sort of that three-man sort of playoff rotation that you need to make a deep run.
[SPEAKER_04]: I think either of these guys are viable trade pieces that competitive teams are going to be willing to trade for.
[SPEAKER_04]: If you're the Mariners, you might be able to, you know, buy excess or buy a bat or get back prospects.
[SPEAKER_04]: Maybe you swing a three-team deal and a rebuilder that's moving
[SPEAKER_04]: This is also Jerry DePoto, who's incredibly creative and aggressive when it comes to trading.
[SPEAKER_04]: So I would expect them to go out here and try to make a splash, and I don't think they have to do it and excuse me and sacrifice any of their core, which they've built over the last couple of years, which I do think is pretty good.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's underperformed a little bit maybe this year, but I do look at that as a team that
[SPEAKER_04]: This could really be sort of a turning point and tipping point for their season.
[SPEAKER_04]: They go out, they make a big splash to kind of free up some meetings for K&Rs and whoever else in that rotation, and then make a really nice run down here in the stretch.
[SPEAKER_04]: They're kind of a dangerous team for that reason, and I think you look at the front office and how they've operated.
[SPEAKER_04]: They're not scared to make a big move.
[SPEAKER_02]: So we've got a couple of trade proposals here, a couple of Terrix school Dodgers trade proposals.
[SPEAKER_02]: We'll get the first one here.
[SPEAKER_02]: Believe this is from Modern 15, how about Emmett Shehans, the year hope, and Kellyn Lindsay for school.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, hold that one in your head for a second, because we also have another one I believe from Uncle Ted has a different proposal, also, but how about Zach Root and Christians as a Weta and Charles Davelin for school.
[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm going to start by saying, I think it's and not or there if you, you know, it again, that's what is a elite pitching prospect now, like the Dodgers have turned him into something really special, Jeff, I'll let you come on a mat one and then Ian, you're coming up next, which, okay, root plus that's what a and slash ordival infrastructure is that enough, not enough, need to see more, what would you say?
[SPEAKER_04]: It's hard to gauge it, I mean, because I think
[SPEAKER_04]: You're at a point if you're the Tigers where you're probably not, you're not going to make the playoffs probably this year.
[SPEAKER_04]: You're probably not going to go on that run.
[SPEAKER_04]: You went through a period of time where a scuba missed some time because of an injury and elbow injury.
[SPEAKER_04]: And he came back very quickly.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's been fine since returning.
[SPEAKER_04]: So like, I think either of these packages, I'd probably take.
[SPEAKER_04]: Personally, I don't know, I don't know if it has to be root plus Zazueta plus Davelin.
[SPEAKER_04]: I wonder if Zazueta and Davelin and then like a different fiduciary piece kind of gets that done.
[SPEAKER_04]: We're too low right now on Zazueta.
[SPEAKER_04]: I think we'll rectify that as we update the top 100 in the next couple of days.
[SPEAKER_04]: Um, but he's somebody that every time we go out for outside feedback, it keeps getting louder and louder.
[SPEAKER_04]: I know Ian had some feedback he shared with me.
[SPEAKER_04]: I made some text messages and phone calls yesterday about it.
[SPEAKER_04]: Like, where would you place this guy in a top 100 list?
[SPEAKER_04]: I think he's close to the top 25 and he is the top 50.
[SPEAKER_04]: So I think that's a really valuable piece.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's a really good pitching prospect who's fairly far along.
[SPEAKER_04]: He's not going to be up for you this year, maybe not until next summer.
[SPEAKER_04]: But that or getting back as I or hope was really hit to a wise trended very nicely over the last few months, I think those guys might be enough to get it done.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's just, the Dodgers have an embarrassment of riches right now, and they're not even trading from the Paula or from Sarota who, if they swing those guys into a trade, they can probably get just about any deal done.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, Ian, am it she hence the here hope killing Lindsey for scoobles, that enough to you?
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's pretty interesting.
[SPEAKER_01]: I probably want to swap out the Lindsey piece.
[SPEAKER_01]: I know he's at a great start since he came back from injury, but there's just a ton of hit to a risk there for me that he's not someone I would be that in on if I was the Tigers.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I think Xi'an, you know, you can backfill schoolable spot in the rotation with Xi'an who's controlled.
[SPEAKER_01]: Zyer hope as Jeff said, he's been on a tear recently, part of that loaded double-eyout field.
[SPEAKER_01]: And if his hit tool is legit, you know, this is guy with power speed.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's got a good arm.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot to like here too.
[SPEAKER_01]: So he's the exact type of impact position player.
[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like the Tigers kind of right now are lacking with the Kevin Gauticle now and the Major's obviously.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that's on the right track.
[SPEAKER_01]: I probably want to switch the third piece for someone else.
[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, I think that getting someone that she and back who's big league righty also would be very appealing to a Tigers team that I don't think wants to go into a deep rebuild.
[SPEAKER_02]: gotten to a lot of your comments already.
[SPEAKER_02]: We will get to some more, I've got a couple others that we've got teed up here.
[SPEAKER_02]: But I do want to also ask, you wrote about this, Ian, but like, change of scenery candidates, right?
[SPEAKER_02]: We talked a little bit about, you know, like, obviously, that I'd say the most significant one is like guys who are no longer prospect eligible, but could probably use a move.
[SPEAKER_02]: I feel like Anthony Volpi probably is the most significant
[SPEAKER_02]: It would be almost surprising to not see George Lombard in New York in August at this point I would say, but who stands out to you, is it, is it, is it Volpi or is there someone else who really jumps out that you wouldn't be surprised to see moved?
[SPEAKER_01]: I think the Yankees actually might have the two most interesting ones in Volpi and Jason Dominguez.
[SPEAKER_01]: The Dominguez might be off the table now with Cody Bellinger's injury.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to have to play a lot going forward.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I think Volpi is the one for me because it's not working there.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's funny because he's been a valuable player.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's pushing like nine career war.
[SPEAKER_01]: But it's just this season, the defense seems to have backed up a little bit and he's just contributing very little at the plate the same time You know playing in New York is not easy and it you know the media market there.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a very difficult one Wonder if you're a smaller market team, you know your team that is need for a good glove shortstop Where there's less pressure that's kind of the guy you probably want to be targeting especially if you have you know Maybe a rental whether it be a starting pitcher Outfield or another infield or something
[SPEAKER_01]: That's just to have a guy you want to get because the upside is still there and if you can bring them in You know get the working with different hitting coaches get a different voice in their head On that side of the ball maybe he could unlock something because this is a guy that was once seen as a premium prospect And the Yankees having George Lombard sitting there who since he's returned from injury has been fantastic and triple a he's showing power He's getting on base.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's his defense is there
[SPEAKER_01]: It would be a surprise to me almost at this point if they don't go to him at some point and if you're going to do that, you're just further decreasing vulpies valley value because teams are going to know that he's not someone who's in your future plans.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I think vulpies the one who is the clearest of the change of scenery candidates, but I mean, you look up and down baseball like I was surprised during this exercise.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's just a lot of X-Tot prospects who are now kind of blocked or who have not lived up to expectations.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I mean, we saw the nationals, they made a trade to open up a spot for one of these guys in Brady House, who they had sent down to the miners.
[SPEAKER_01]: And since come back after the Curtis meet trade, but you've got, you know, Andrew Painter is another one in AAA right now comes to mind.
[SPEAKER_01]: Nolan Gorman with the cardinals, you know, Ronnie Mauricio, Braxton Garrett, like you look up and down baseball and there's a there's a plethora of top 100 prospects just haven't lived up to expectations and I think that the deadline is a good buying opportunity for some of those teams to recoup some value and then for another team to maybe get someone who can turn into kind of live up to their expectations.
[SPEAKER_02]: So we've talked a lot of trade deadline.
[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to talk more, take more your comments, but we write back final sprint right after this.
[SPEAKER_02]: Final sprint, we're gonna keep rolling through your questions and comments.
[SPEAKER_02]: We've got one that's actually trade, I'm sorry, draft signing deadline related.
[SPEAKER_02]: A question from Robert G. Fitzpatrick asking, who are the big disappointments on the management of draft capital?
[SPEAKER_02]: Cleveland is obvious, but didn't walk in, kids would say, drop them all of that.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, I'm gonna answer this one, and I'm just gonna push back on this.
[SPEAKER_02]: Like, you didn't like that the reality of it is is that they did mismanaged draft capital, I would say, even in Cleveland's case, for I obviously didn't sign logo, which meant,
[SPEAKER_02]: For teams, it's actually a pretty modest risk because they saw Schmidt sitting there and they're like, okay, we don't know if we're gonna sign them or not.
[SPEAKER_02]: But if we can, then it'll be a great bargain at the spot that we're drafting him.
[SPEAKER_02]: So what's their punishment for that?
[SPEAKER_02]: They get a pick that is one spot later next year.
[SPEAKER_02]: No big deal, just reality.
[SPEAKER_02]: Like it wasn't the first pick either.
[SPEAKER_02]: So you look at, again, like you had a draft where
[SPEAKER_02]: I just don't think, like, again, it's something where when you say mismanagement of it, I don't see the, obviously, the most extreme example of this is that Houston didn't sign the number one pick, and then they turned that the next year into Alex pregnant and Kyle Tucker having two picks on the top five.
[SPEAKER_02]: So I would say that like you got to know who the Guardian's draft next year before you can say like, oh, they really blew that thing to spend.
[SPEAKER_02]: There's that pick.
[SPEAKER_02]: So that's the first one.
[SPEAKER_02]: The next one, I find this trade fascinating.
[SPEAKER_02]: Jeff, I'm teaching you up on this one.
[SPEAKER_02]: CNYMJets, SC,
[SPEAKER_02]: I'll let out which is, so the Cubs need pitching, say this has been very productive this year, obviously has been more productive than Carlos Rodon.
[SPEAKER_02]: However, the Cubs do need pitching, maybe a little bit of changes scenery Rodon is kind of finish a cargo before, and then obviously the Yankees could use a thumper of an outfielder.
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, but who would he think?
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, and just checking on the contract here, I believe Suzuki is out of contract this year, yeah.
[SPEAKER_04]: contract isn't till this season.
[SPEAKER_04]: So he is a free agent in 2027, um, you're, you're taking on more money there if you're the Cubs, um, because Rodon, yeah, Rodon has 27 this year or just about 28 year, next year, 2028.
[SPEAKER_04]: I think it's more of a Cubs issue.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's a matter of like how much with the Yankees paid down to move Rodon for rental.
[SPEAKER_04]: Um, and I don't think it's a bad offer, but it's a matter of like what's your risk tolerance on both sides.
[SPEAKER_04]: Because it is a rental, but you are unloading a ton of money and we could be entering a period where there's potentially a cap.
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, because you have two years, you know, that's around $60 million left on Road On Steel.
[SPEAKER_02]: I will answer it that the answer is no.
[SPEAKER_02]: The Cubs say no because the Cubs aren't taking gun that contract for that.
[SPEAKER_02]: Like you have to really throw a real sweetener in it.
[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't think that the Yankees are going to throw that kind of sweetener in this.
[SPEAKER_04]: So that's the Red Sox.
[SPEAKER_04]: The Red Sox wouldn't do it.
[SPEAKER_04]: And the Red Sox approach to managing that team is very much rooted in how the Cubs kind of manage their team.
[SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, I don't think they would take on that money unless the Yankees will end up paid down $20 million or something or sending a big prospect alongside, which they don't really have.
[SPEAKER_02]: Next question, next comment, been full in camp.
[SPEAKER_02]: No, Elvimarté is beneath the time capsule, beneath the indio, in the emberagram, beneath the jail, beneath the doghouse of Tarifranco, and it seems like a chain is a change of scenery might be best for all involved.
[SPEAKER_02]: I wanted to use this, I'll kind of te you up on it, Ian, but I'm gonna use this as an example of why I say, don't hug your prospects, right?
[SPEAKER_02]: No, Elvimarté came to the reds in the deal that sent Luis Castillo to the Mariners.
[SPEAKER_02]: Luis Castillo to the Mariners, Nuelve Marte, Edwin Arroyo, a couple other pieces too.
[SPEAKER_02]: I believe Levi Stout was in that deal, and I'm forgetting another reliever type, but really Marte and Arroyo, the both of whom were top 100 prospects at the time.
[SPEAKER_02]: And here we are, Edwin Arroyo's made his debut this year in 26, several years later, Marte has kind of been up and down, but
[SPEAKER_02]: I will go back to.
[SPEAKER_02]: Again, we love the top 100, but you're talking about even middle of the top 100.
[SPEAKER_02]: You're not talking about sure things, but could no of a martybe interesting for someone else out there do you think of you?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, he was actually someone we had on our list because, you know, the issue and the thing that has really held them back as the majors is the basketball skills, you know, 37% chase rate hyper aggressive approach that, you know, that's something that a triple A can kind of get away with, but big league pitchers are going to be able to exploit it.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's the issue he's run into is just the hit tool is not translated and even if he has raw power, he's got arms strength.
[SPEAKER_01]: If you can't hit and you are not an up the middle position anymore, which he isn't, he's now more of an outfielder than there's just so much more pressure on your bat and I think that's kind of what he's run into and that's where, you know, maybe another organization can figure something out with him at the plate.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's hard to improve your chase rate substantially, you know, the Ronald Acunia year where he cut it, I think, almost and half that doesn't happen, but you know, if you can get that down even closer to 30% that's where you might be able to unlock something and that's where.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, another organization and other hitting instructor might be able to work with him because as you said he's a super talented player, you know, someone we had well inside the top 100, but just hasn't translated in for the reds and now he finds himself in the doghouse where it's, you know, it's hard when you're not playing very much or you're on the shuttle between AAA and the majors to kind of find any consistency.
[SPEAKER_02]: next question from I believe modern asking are the marlin still buying?
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to kick this one back to Ian here.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to say no after this, but I would say that Ian you and I have had a discussion about kind of a oh remember wind player that you could see on the move that I think you just recently saw.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was someone I saw this week, actually, or this past week in Triple A is a Braxton Garrett, who another one was former first round pick, was one of their top pitching prospects.
[SPEAKER_01]: And he's been very, he was not very good in the start, I saw.
[SPEAKER_01]: But coming into that, that started at a 174 ERA in Triple A.
[SPEAKER_01]: And...
[SPEAKER_01]: you know, he doesn't throw hard.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's we know that.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's the biggest issue.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's 90 to 93.
[SPEAKER_01]: But he's got some decent secondary.
[SPEAKER_01]: He throws strikes.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, this is a guy I could see a team potentially trying to figure out as a back end starter and maybe if they think their video program can work with him.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's still talented.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's still, you know, he's only I think 27 years old, 28 years old.
[SPEAKER_01]: and teams just need pitching, you know, there's a lack of it around the game, back end starters, they don't go for a lot, but there's something that every team needs.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think with it's pretty clear he's not in the Marlins plan, so I think he's someone that, if I was a team looking for kind of like a by-low option for someone we can try to sneak in as a fifth starter, maybe a sixth starter and see if we can unlock something, I think Garrett's a really good candidate for that as well.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, we've got another one here, which is another Cubs could maybe add a picture question, which is maybe the Cubs get Gosman.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, Jeff, I'm going to you, you do the Blue Jays for us.
[SPEAKER_02]: I will note here, contract wise, this one's a little bit more palatable, you are talking about basically a guy who is a true rental 23-mill this year and then a free agency.
[SPEAKER_02]: What would be a realistic, like,
[SPEAKER_02]: Again, the cubs also I feel like our team that have some players that are kind of stock blocked could be moved in a deal.
[SPEAKER_02]: Does this make some sense?
[SPEAKER_04]: You're muted.
[SPEAKER_04]: Oops.
[SPEAKER_04]: I think that there is there is enough here.
[SPEAKER_04]: In the Cub system to get this done, I don't think they're going to have to trade from, you know, any of their top five or six.
[SPEAKER_04]: But, you know, when the Gaussman deal, I mean, we've seen the Blue Jays kind of swing some of these before, where they'll trade an expiring vet for a reasonably decent prospect, but maybe not one of like huge note, you know, maybe, I mean, I think the high end would be like, hey, maybe they trade a Kevin Alcantara.
[SPEAKER_04]: You know, blue jays, I think just from a depth perspective without fielders, they could probably give them some run as well, especially if you see, you know, Varsho and springer as potential guys that could move as well, who I also believe are expiring.
[SPEAKER_04]: So I think you kind of look at that whole group.
[SPEAKER_04]: There's the cubs have enough prospect here to trade from kind of re up in the draft a little bit.
[SPEAKER_04]: Have had a couple of guys from the last last years draft who have performed.
[SPEAKER_04]: You know, I don't think you'd see a Caleb laying or someone like that move for Galsman.
[SPEAKER_04]: But depends, you know, how aggressive the market is for Galsman, because there are so many buyers that we might see returns as I think the sticker shock unlike Curtis Meade, I think we could see something similar even with a rental picture that
[SPEAKER_04]: As we've seen, sometimes these rental pictures can make a significant difference out for the trade deadline.
[SPEAKER_04]: I know JJ, you called out a few of them as you were working on an article.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I got a piece of the up at baseball, America tomorrow, which has several of those guys who have been very significant.
[SPEAKER_02]: Man, we could keep going on this.
[SPEAKER_02]: We do have one last one that we're going to hit, which is, uh, uh, I think, uh, actually, I'm going to tee this up, uh, so Varsho and Hoffman to the fillies, the fillies are a team that
[SPEAKER_02]: They need some help, I feel like, you know, a little bit of help here.
[SPEAKER_02]: But I'll throw that out to you Ian, if you have any else, so it's all about the BlueJays, also as well, kind of to wrap us up.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I know, I think that would be interesting for the fillies.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they need an outfield there, and they need a reliever.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, you look in those are guys that have track record or performance of the playoffs.
[SPEAKER_01]: Hoffman is kind of an inconsistent this year.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I think the BlueJays are going to be one of the most assating teams to watch, heading into the deadline, because they're not out of it per se, but they are five games back of the last wild card.
[SPEAKER_01]: And for a team that was in the world series last year, your expectations were that you would be competing for the division not for the final wild card.
[SPEAKER_01]: And if they were to move players though, they have very interesting players, Jeff mentioned Gossman or we talked about him, Varshow, Jeff Hoffman.
[SPEAKER_01]: But beyond that, they have some kind of repetitive positions where they have some depth that they could deal from catcher.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think is someone a lot of people in the chat have been bringing up, because you have Alejandro Kirk established a brand in Valens Way a little like someone who could be at least a platoon character,
[SPEAKER_01]: going to in a time share exactly.
[SPEAKER_01]: And the Bluetooth aren't that far away, they don't need a full rebuild.
[SPEAKER_01]: They could, you know, sell off some spare parts, sell off some rentals, get some nice prospects to augment their system debt and set themselves up, we're into the offseason.
[SPEAKER_01]: They have now more talent to go out and get bigly capable players to boost the roster for 2027.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I think they're going to be a really interesting team to watch because if they do go into sell mode, they have some very interesting rentals, George
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I think there are very a key team to watch heading forward to see what they do over the next few days in the next week.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, and this was the note that Jake Rogers just designated for assignment by the Tigers.
[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't see that one coming.
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't have him a great year, but the sky was a regular catcher just a couple of years ago.
[SPEAKER_02]: So he will also be available in a very modest deal, probably here at the Trade Deadline.
[SPEAKER_02]: If you enjoyed this, I do want to highlight for you that at Baseball America's YouTube channel on Wednesday, the 29th, Ian and I will be doing another live show to talk Trade Deadline.
[SPEAKER_02]: love to talk to you, take more of these questions, comments, suggestions, and also check out this by american.com, so much stuff about trade deadline, and so much more for Jeff for Ian.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm JJ, so long, everybody.
