Savannah
He is convinced that Helen Keller is not real. Called the miracle worker. Yeah, it's incredible. It's a miracle. It's incredible.
[00:00:07:28 - 00:00:16:05]
Woody
It's a very best they ever did on Family Guy was Oh no. She's hiding in the attic when the Nazis come into the house.
[00:00:16:05 - 00:00:19:21]
Jim
Are you confusing Anne Frank with Helen Keller? I am.
[00:00:19:21 - 00:00:20:20]
(Laughing)
[00:00:20:20 - 00:00:25:16]
All at once
The end. I was about to say the same thing. The end, goodbye.
[00:00:25:16 - 00:00:27:26]
(Laughing) (Upbeat Music)
[00:00:30:20 - 00:00:32:08]
Jim
Welcome back to the podcast.
[00:00:32:08 - 00:00:42:03]
Woody
It's time for the Woody and Jim podcast. Savannah's here and we're off the leash. Beautiful. Nice.
[00:00:42:03 - 00:00:42:24]
Jim
Thank you. Yes, we're done.
[00:00:42:24 - 00:00:43:20]
Woody
Thank you.
[00:00:43:20 - 00:00:47:11]
Jim
So in the last week, what's been going on?
[00:00:48:15 - 00:00:49:19]
Jim
You had a birthday.
[00:00:49:19 - 00:00:51:00]
Savannah
I did. It was
[00:00:52:03 - 00:00:52:25]
Savannah
depressing.
[00:00:52:25 - 00:00:53:18]
Woody
I'm sorry.
[00:00:53:18 - 00:00:54:12]
Savannah
It's okay.
[00:00:54:12 - 00:00:58:26]
Woody
What ruined your birthday? I don't know, just the fact that it happened. Why was the day of your birth ruined?
[00:00:58:26 - 00:00:59:28]
(Laughing)
[00:00:59:28 - 00:01:06:27]
Savannah
Okay, so here's the thing. All of my best friends right now are in Portugal and they're having a blast.
[00:01:06:27 - 00:01:07:16]
Woody
Portugal?
[00:01:07:16 - 00:01:09:11]
Savannah
Yeah, they're on a girls trip.
[00:01:09:11 - 00:01:10:05]
Woody
Oh, okay.
[00:01:10:05 - 00:01:10:24]
Savannah
And
[00:01:11:29 - 00:01:14:09]
Savannah
most of them left before my birthday.
[00:01:14:09 - 00:01:14:27]
Woody
Oh.
[00:01:14:27 - 00:01:19:29]
Savannah
A couple days before, just because it was the cheapest time to go, whatever. And I will say, I was originally supposed to go on this trip.
[00:01:19:29 - 00:01:20:22]
Jim
Okay.
[00:01:20:22 - 00:01:23:20]
Savannah
I bowed out of this trip. Okay, so part of this is my own fault.
[00:01:23:20 - 00:01:29:10]
Jim
But unfortunately, your birthday happens while they're all in another country.
[00:01:29:10 - 00:02:02:13]
Savannah
Gallivanting around Europe together. Yeah, and you know, so for my birthday this year, I just felt like I just wanted to pretend like I didn't have one. And I don't know, I was feeling like really existential. And then I know how much you guys care about astrology. So this part is really just gonna like do something for you. But I did feel some comfort in the fact that apparently Virgos, of which I am one, are like notorious for sort of just like getting into this dark mood around their birthday and just sort of like wanting to swallow themselves up into like a hole in the ground.
[00:02:02:13 - 00:02:03:06]
(Laughing)
[00:02:03:06 - 00:02:05:23]
Savannah
You know, I was like, okay, so maybe I'm like right on track.
[00:02:05:23 - 00:02:08:13]
Jim
Plus have all your birthdays been that way?
[00:02:08:13 - 00:02:16:08]
Savannah
I will say there's like a level of sort of like embarrassment that I carry around my birthday.
[00:02:16:08 - 00:02:17:19]
Jim
Yeah, oh, I get it.
[00:02:17:19 - 00:02:33:21]
Savannah
Do you know what I mean? Yeah. So it's like, I don't know, but I also think it's kind of true to my personality that I've always lived with this idea that I'm gonna be doing something more than what I'm doing. And so birthdays are like the perfect occasion to take stock of your life and be like, but what have I really done?
[00:02:33:21 - 00:02:37:18]
Jim
I haven't lived up to the high expectations I've set for myself.
[00:02:37:18 - 00:02:51:05]
Savannah
Exactly, and I, so I'm constantly, I think, bullying myself a little bit, and that's never more clear than like on my birthday. Sure, yeah. Yeah, it was kind of a dark birthday, but you know what, that's okay. It's like you're okay.
[00:02:51:05 - 00:02:59:13]
Woody
I, yeah. You've done a lot in your life. You have a wonderful job. You make people happy. You've raised a wonderful child.
[00:02:59:13 - 00:03:00:06]
Savannah
Thank you.
[00:03:00:06 - 00:03:01:27]
Woody
You know, you're doing okay.
[00:03:01:27 - 00:03:02:12]
Savannah
Yeah.
[00:03:02:12 - 00:03:11:07]
Jim
Don't cut yourself short. Next question. Did your son fulfill your birthday wish by telling you his favorite song?
[00:03:11:07 - 00:03:12:23]
Woody
Does he have a favorite song now?
[00:03:12:23 - 00:03:17:12]
Savannah
Okay, do you know what's so funny about that? Cause he and I were talking about that like all afternoon.
[00:03:17:12 - 00:03:17:27]
Woody
Okay.
[00:03:17:27 - 00:03:31:09]
Savannah
Because he still has not told me what his favorite song is. And I did say that's all I want for my birthday is you have to give me an answer. He's a bastard. I will say before I came here, I caught him listening to the Arctic monkeys.
[00:03:31:09 - 00:03:33:14]
Woody
Okay. Solid joy. Nice.
[00:03:33:14 - 00:03:43:09]
Savannah
So I'm just like, I'm very curious what he's gonna come up with. Cause he's supposed to give me an answer tonight. I was like, Wolfie, I can understand needing a little bit more time, but it's been five days.
[00:03:43:09 - 00:03:48:01]
Woody
He's 13, so it's like that's a little bit retro for him. Okay. Right. Okay, I like it.
[00:03:48:01 - 00:03:58:15]
Savannah
So as soon as I hear from him, maybe he'll text me while we're here. And then we can just like, breaking news. Wolfie Crew has a favorite song, but I'm still not sure what it is.
[00:03:58:15 - 00:04:17:22]
Jim
Do you wanna know? I hope that's the name of the song. That's probably my favorite Arctic monkeys song. And it would be kind of funny if that was his favorite, but he actually says to you, do you wanna know? And you're like, yes. And he's, but I told you already, no, you didn't. Do you wanna know? Yeah, who's on first? Who's on first? What's on second?
[00:04:19:07 - 00:04:20:24]
Jim
Woody, what's been happening with you?
[00:04:20:24 - 00:04:32:12]
Woody
I've been just to looking for a job. It's interesting, of course, going on Indeed and Zip Recruiter and all that is, it's a huge scam.
[00:04:32:12 - 00:04:32:27]
Jim
Oh yeah.
[00:04:32:27 - 00:04:56:14]
Woody
And I get these emails saying, congratulations, your resume was chosen. And I went, ah, and then I click on the email and it says, your resume may have been chosen. And I'm like, why be chosen? Like, okay. It's all bait and switch. It is, it is. Yeah. But I have applied for the new Bucky's in Murfreesboro that's gonna be opening in November.
[00:04:56:14 - 00:04:59:17]
Jim
Awesome, I hear they're like really good places to work.
[00:04:59:17 - 00:05:02:08]
Woody
So maybe I can be in the beaver suit.
[00:05:03:10 - 00:05:07:04]
Woody
I can hand out the beaver nuggets, direct from the factory.
[00:05:07:04 - 00:05:11:10]
Jim
If you're eating beaver nuggets, are you eating yourself? If you're the beaver?
[00:05:12:13 - 00:05:12:27]
Savannah
Listen.
[00:05:12:27 - 00:05:14:29]
Speaker 7
Would you care for some beaver nuggets? Eat me.
[00:05:14:29 - 00:05:27:25]
Savannah
This chapter you currently find yourself in, I don't know, I'm seeing it in my head, regardless of what you think about it, as like an experiment. Yes. You know, because you've been doing radio for such a long time.
[00:05:27:25 - 00:05:34:06]
Woody
This is the first time in my life since I was like a teenager that I've actually looked for a job. Usually the jobs have come looking for me.
[00:05:34:06 - 00:05:34:18]
Speaker 8
Right.
[00:05:34:18 - 00:05:49:13]
Woody
Which has been my life in radio. People offer me job and I'll go, okay, I'm coming. Which is great, huh? Yeah, which is awesome. And now you have to go online, you have to work through AI and everything. You can't just walk into a place and fill out an application.
[00:05:49:13 - 00:05:49:27]
Jim
Yeah.
[00:05:49:27 - 00:05:52:15]
Woody
So, you know, it's a whole different world.
[00:05:52:15 - 00:05:58:27]
Savannah
Yeah, but I think I have a few thoughts about it. One is that you've always been like a man of the people.
[00:05:58:27 - 00:05:59:18]
(Laughing)
[00:05:59:18 - 00:06:00:05]
Savannah
Thank you.
[00:06:00:05 - 00:06:03:01]
Woody
Perhaps I should run for governor.
[00:06:04:18 - 00:06:06:08]
Savannah
What I mean by that is like,
[00:06:07:15 - 00:06:11:22]
Savannah
you know, this is something that I think makes you more
[00:06:13:08 - 00:06:26:21]
Savannah
capable of relating to the community in which you live. And I think that's always a good thing. Like sometimes it can be like really strange when that happens, but, and it may be like really hard. I mean, I know it's been like a stressful thing for you.
[00:06:26:21 - 00:06:27:01]
All at once
Yeah.
[00:06:27:01 - 00:06:37:15]
Savannah
But my dad used to always tell me whenever I'd get stressed out about stuff, he'd be like, but this is gonna make you like more compassionate. It's gonna make you more empathetic. You're never gonna regret like sharpening that specific skill set.
[00:06:37:15 - 00:06:37:28]
Woody
That's true.
[00:06:37:28 - 00:06:47:14]
Savannah
You know? So I think that, and then I also wonder, why are you not taking the sexy calendar things seriously? And also,
[00:06:49:14 - 00:06:50:18]
Savannah
even more than that,
[00:06:51:26 - 00:06:54:26]
Savannah
what if you like tried to do like voiceover work or some shit?
[00:06:54:26 - 00:07:03:05]
Woody
I actually have applied to a couple places where they, you know, there's a couple places where you can actually do voiceovers for commercials and things like that.
[00:07:03:05 - 00:07:06:02]
Savannah
Yeah, or even like on fiber or like- Perfect.
[00:07:06:02 - 00:07:06:24]
Jim
Yeah.
[00:07:06:24 - 00:07:09:12]
Savannah
Narrate books. Either one of you motherfuckers could do that.
[00:07:09:12 - 00:07:09:27]
Jim
Right.
[00:07:09:27 - 00:07:11:16]
Savannah
I'm just saying you should think about it.
[00:07:11:16 - 00:07:45:28]
Jim
By the way, that's, reading books out loud, I just found out the coolest thing. Because I read some young adult YA lit for somebody I know that teaches special ed about 15 years ago. And so they were like for young teens. And she told me the other day, I ran into her and she said, people, they're still listening to the books on, what do you call it, books on tape. They're still listening to those books in school and still enjoying them.
[00:07:45:28 - 00:07:48:03]
All at once
And I'm like, I forgot I even did them.
[00:07:48:03 - 00:07:48:20]
Jim
Wow.
[00:07:48:20 - 00:07:55:14]
Woody
But it's really cool. Yeah, if anybody knows how you can, you know, get into the audio book trade, I would love to do that.
[00:07:55:14 - 00:07:59:07]
Savannah
You guys both have such beautiful voices. Thank you. You belong doing stuff like that.
[00:07:59:07 - 00:08:00:29]
Woody
And I can read most words. Yeah.
[00:08:02:00 - 00:08:02:03]
(Laughing)
[00:08:02:03 - 00:08:04:01]
Savannah
They just edit it out if you fuck something up.
[00:08:05:14 - 00:08:19:16]
Jim
You've got like the quintessential, like professional voice. Yeah. Thank you. You know, mine, I can control it. But I don't have the, no, I don't have the. You're so short. No, I'm very short. Yeah.
[00:08:21:07 - 00:08:21:08]
(Laughing)
[00:08:21:08 - 00:08:23:08]
Woody
We're all tiny people.
[00:08:23:08 - 00:08:36:13]
Savannah
I think it's like Anderson Cooper vibes. And then like the guy who does all the movie voiceovers. He was like, you know where, you have like such powerful presence and range and everything that you say. The pipes. Yeah.
[00:08:36:13 - 00:08:38:03]
Jim
That's right. You have the pipes, it says.
[00:08:38:03 - 00:08:40:01]
Woody
So what's new with you, Jim?
[00:08:42:00 - 00:08:42:15]
Jim
Well,
[00:08:43:21 - 00:08:46:06]
Jim
my dog is high. And
[00:08:47:29 - 00:09:01:07]
Jim
we got awful news this morning. My sister messaged me that her husband died yesterday. And we are just absolutely shocked. It's sudden, nobody expected it. He wasn't sick.
[00:09:02:15 - 00:09:18:22]
Jim
And it just kills me. Cause she's in Houston and her and my nieces and my nephews, they're all there. I wish I was there, but she's like, don't come yet. And I wish I could be there for them. Just, God sucks.
[00:09:18:22 - 00:09:26:28]
Savannah
I'm so sorry. That's such a shock. Like I, not to beat a horse that's been dead since 2019, AKA my father.
[00:09:28:17 - 00:09:31:22]
Woody
I'm sure he's up in heaven smiling or you're referring to him as a horse.
[00:09:33:24 - 00:09:34:21]
Jim
I think he'd like that.
[00:09:34:21 - 00:09:39:01]
Savannah
I think he would too. But that was such a shock when that happened to him.
[00:09:39:01 - 00:09:40:00]
Woody
That was very sudden.
[00:09:40:00 - 00:09:51:18]
Savannah
Yeah. And so I empathize with how it feels to get a text like that out of nowhere when someone wasn't sick and just kind of feel like you're floating for a minute. Like, what are you talking about?
[00:09:52:20 - 00:09:58:14]
Savannah
But as far as your sister and your nieces being like, don't come yet, I will say that
[00:10:00:08 - 00:10:01:24]
Savannah
my best advice,
[00:10:03:08 - 00:10:12:16]
Savannah
and this is something that I'll keep in mind in my interactions with you, but like something you can keep in mind in your interactions with them is just like, I think the hardest part of grief is
[00:10:13:23 - 00:10:17:28]
Savannah
it comes way after any like memorial service.
[00:10:17:28 - 00:10:18:26]
Jim
Yeah.
[00:10:18:26 - 00:10:24:00]
Savannah
Or like, you know, in the immediate days after it's like suddenly there's this rush and everyone is suddenly there.
[00:10:25:05 - 00:10:30:10]
Woody
And then all of a sudden it gets-- You're also kind of in a state of shock at that point. So it takes a while for it to settle in.
[00:10:30:10 - 00:10:40:25]
Savannah
Right, but then like as time goes on, people go back to their lives and they get used to it so much more quickly than you do because they didn't have as much intimacy or closeness with that person, even if they loved them.
[00:10:40:25 - 00:10:41:15]
Jim
Right, right.
[00:10:41:15 - 00:10:46:29]
Savannah
And then it's like, you kind of need your family to show up later to be like, okay.
[00:10:46:29 - 00:10:50:27]
Jim
And I think my sister, she's really, she's very smart.
[00:10:52:19 - 00:10:55:21]
Jim
My sister is the, she was the one that took care of me.
[00:10:55:21 - 00:10:56:07]
Jim
You know,
[00:10:56:07 - 00:10:57:05]
Jim
like just,
[00:10:58:07 - 00:11:07:23]
Jim
she always brought me to stuff and so like I want to be there for her, but she's also, she's super practical. She's like my mom. So she's probably, I
[00:11:08:28 - 00:11:19:21]
Jim
don't doubt for a second that she's probably not saying the same thing. That like right now we've, everybody's coming over, the whole community's coming together, but I'll need you later.
[00:11:19:21 - 00:11:38:24]
Savannah
Exactly. So especially if she's the practical one, be on the lookout for her because I feel like you guys also know that when I was going through that, like I had to be practical for such a long time. And then at some point, like I did hit a wall and I was like so brokenhearted that I just completely fell apart. Like, and I had to disappear from the show even.
[00:11:38:24 - 00:11:39:26]
Jim
I get it.
[00:11:39:26 - 00:11:44:16]
Savannah
There's like a delayed grieving thing that happens. And so just look out for her if she's the strong one.
[00:11:44:16 - 00:11:48:22]
Woody
Yeah. Now going back to your dog being high.
[00:11:48:22 - 00:11:54:05]
Savannah
Yeah, we just sort of posted past that. You delayed it for that pretty fast. Why is he high?
[00:11:54:05 - 00:11:57:16]
Woody
Now Wally, he's like 15-ish.
[00:11:57:16 - 00:12:11:22]
Jim
He's going on 15, 14, 15. We use a rescue so we don't know exactly his age, but we almost lost him in June and like he kind of rallied back. Like he's not in the best of health,
[00:12:12:26 - 00:13:06:19]
Jim
but he's like doing okay. But one thing that he had, like I think he kind of has doggy dementia. So he like, he's sundowning, you know, as the day goes on, he starts becoming agitated and circling and pacing and he can't relax. And that's just, you know, like two days ago, I looked down the counter, I said, Jen, we've got those little hemp treats that our veterinarian said, give these to your dog when he's really upset with storms, thunderstorms. Oh yeah. And it'll calm him down and chill him out. I'm like, why aren't we just giving him those? So we've been giving him those the past two days at dinner time and he just spends the rest of the night just like, he's toasted. He is toasted. He was,
[00:13:07:23 - 00:13:16:22]
Jim
Jenna and I were about to go to sleep, but the lights are on and Wally's at the foot of the bed and he's just staring at us like, whoa.
[00:13:16:22 - 00:13:17:23]
(Laughing)
[00:13:17:23 - 00:13:20:19]
All at once
His eyelid's are half up. Could you put on some Arctic monkeys or something?
[00:13:22:05 - 00:13:22:09]
(Laughing)
[00:13:22:09 - 00:13:43:15]
Jim
Jenna and I were just looking at him like, he's so wasted. And I texted a friend of ours who's a veterinarian. She's a good friend and I said, is this okay? And she's like, he's an old dog. Whatever makes him comfortable. Who cares if he's feeling fine. So yeah, my dog is wasted.
[00:13:43:15 - 00:13:45:26]
Woody
All senior citizens need to be high all the time.
[00:13:47:02 - 00:13:48:22]
Jim
There's something to that. There is.
[00:13:48:22 - 00:14:12:25]
Savannah
Okay, just a question that I can't help but ask here. How do we know how to properly interpret a dog's version of being high? Like, whose job is it to measure that? Who is hooking up electrodes to a dog's noggin and like measuring the brainwaves after giving them drugs? I think if
[00:14:14:11 - 00:14:16:17]
Woody
you know your dog well, you'll know.
[00:14:17:18 - 00:14:20:26]
Savannah
Right, but like, but like, you know.
[00:14:20:26 - 00:14:23:14]
Jim
They've got to test it to sell the stuff, right?
[00:14:23:14 - 00:14:23:29]
Savannah
Right, right.
[00:14:25:00 - 00:14:26:08]
Jim
So it's like, okay.
[00:14:26:08 - 00:14:29:16]
Woody
Can I be a test dog for gummies?
[00:14:30:17 - 00:14:31:23]
Woody
That's all I want to do.
[00:14:31:23 - 00:14:36:23]
Jim
I don't know. He seems to, he just, he hits the remote and turns on Rick and Morty episodes.
[00:14:36:23 - 00:14:51:00]
Savannah
So I think he's-- Well, it's like, you know, every human has their own level of like tolerance and like how they interact with different things like alcohol or, you know, gummies or whatever kind. And so it's just like, how do you know that Wally is freaking out?
[00:14:51:00 - 00:14:55:01]
Jim
Because he's not pacing. And he's not like, ugh.
[00:14:55:01 - 00:14:56:20]
Savannah
But what if he hits like a
[00:14:58:08 - 00:15:02:00]
Savannah
dearly loved one of mine once coined this term, Quadra-Puija?
[00:15:03:05 - 00:15:11:21]
Savannah
Like you get so high that you kind of like lose your ability to move. How do we know that's not happening? You know, in Quadra-Puija doesn't feel great.
[00:15:11:21 - 00:15:21:15]
Jim
I think it's a good alternative. Like, okay, this may not be the best thing for him, but it's better than walking around like totally--
[00:15:21:15 - 00:15:29:00]
Savannah
I want Wally comfortable. And he seems happy every time I see him. Now I know maybe he's just high. I honestly-- It's only been two days. Honestly.
[00:15:29:00 - 00:15:33:25]
Woody
His little nub tail was wagging when we came in. Yeah, every time we come over, he
[00:15:33:25 - 00:15:43:25]
Savannah
looks great. And I'm shook because, you know, I know he wasn't doing well for a long time. So I'm just like, how the fuck are you still here? But maybe he's just high and I'm happy about it. You know, I'm happy to see him.
[00:15:43:25 - 00:15:45:14]
Jim
He's just cruising along.
[00:15:45:14 - 00:15:46:11]
All at once
Yeah.
[00:15:46:11 - 00:16:04:05]
Woody
Now since the last time we were here, we mentioned the movie "Buddy" that you had seen. Right. Which is a dark comedy, a horror-ish movie about a Barney type show. And I went and saw it over the weekend. And yes, I totally,
[00:16:04:05 - 00:16:10:05]
Jim
I totally endorse this movie. Was it a delightful descent down the rabbit hole? It was so horrible.
[00:16:11:05 - 00:16:11:07]
(Laughing)
[00:16:11:07 - 00:16:14:04]
Woody
I still have a clue. You have to see it. It's very funny.
[00:16:14:04 - 00:16:16:09]
Savannah
I really want to. I'm still nervous about it.
[00:16:16:09 - 00:16:17:08]
Woody
It's very funny.
[00:16:17:08 - 00:16:17:21]
Savannah
Yeah.
[00:16:19:11 - 00:16:24:12]
Jim
We have a love for disturbing things. And you do too.
[00:16:24:12 - 00:16:24:26]
Savannah
I do.
[00:16:24:26 - 00:16:28:28]
Jim
Yeah. I think we enjoy introducing disturbing things.
[00:16:28:28 - 00:16:32:26]
Woody
We may have to do a podcast field trip and all go see it together.
[00:16:34:18 - 00:16:34:19]
(Laughing)
[00:16:34:19 - 00:16:45:15]
Jim
All right, speaking of disturbing things, have you seen the trailer it just dropped for the A24 movie "You Can See Everything"?
[00:16:45:15 - 00:16:47:24]
Savannah
No. I don't think I've even heard of it.
[00:16:47:24 - 00:16:53:04]
Jim
Okay. What is it? Because it was top secret for three years. Okay. Elizabeth Holmes.
[00:16:53:04 - 00:16:57:00]
Woody
She was the one who presented herself as a scientist.
[00:16:57:00 - 00:17:15:29]
Jim
Right. She had like a tech, medical tech billionaire, $9 billion company. She duped a lot of people. All based on fraud. Yeah. Okay. So she had convinced Silicon Valley and investors and the medical community that she had this device that was gonna revolutionize like blood testing.
[00:17:15:29 - 00:17:19:24]
Woody
You only just needed a little finger prick to be able to do a whole blood test.
[00:17:19:24 - 00:17:22:10]
Jim
Yeah. 100% fraud.
[00:17:22:10 - 00:17:22:20]
Woody
Yeah.
[00:17:22:20 - 00:17:31:12]
Jim
Okay. So she got engineers to rig it so the display looked like it was doing something, but it was a total, total fraud.
[00:17:31:12 - 00:17:32:08]
Savannah
Wow.
[00:17:32:08 - 00:17:45:14]
Jim
Sentenced to jail. Okay. She's been in jail for three years. Right before she went to jail, she gave Nathan Fielder and another guy, filmmakers, access
[00:17:46:25 - 00:17:50:18]
Jim
to her 34 days before she had to go to prison.
[00:17:50:18 - 00:17:52:03]
Woody
Right, before she had to check in.
[00:17:52:03 - 00:17:57:27]
Jim
So they stayed with her 24 seven and interviewed her and talked to her.
[00:17:57:27 - 00:17:58:29]
Savannah
Really?
[00:17:58:29 - 00:18:07:25]
Jim
Then I guess they've been working on it ever since that she went to jail. They're part of the, the documentary is coming out next month.
[00:18:07:25 - 00:18:08:08]
Jim
Okay.
[00:18:08:08 - 00:18:34:10]
Jim
Then it kind of gets really weird and people are trying to keep the secret and I don't know the secret. So I can't spell it, but it's supposed to be amazing. Okay. Sunday night, this debuted at a film festival, the Telluride Film Festival, and they realized this was a total secret, no leaks for three years. They had access to this like crime celebrity. And she is insane.
[00:18:35:12 - 00:18:36:09]
Woody
The
[00:18:37:21 - 00:18:44:13]
Woody
trailer they released to it is, you can't not watch it because it's just,
[00:18:46:06 - 00:18:52:16]
Woody
it's her just staring. They're both staring at each other for and silence for the longest time. And her talking about,
[00:18:52:16 - 00:18:56:13]
Speaker 7
I could never deceive you. There's no reason for me to deceive you.
[00:18:56:13 - 00:19:11:00]
Jim
She's a complete narcissist manipulator. He is on the spectrum and has made a career out of sitting with awkward, uncomfortable situations.
[00:19:11:00 - 00:19:12:19]
Savannah
Feels kind of Louis Theroux-ish.
[00:19:13:22 - 00:19:23:05]
Jim
To the tenth power. Yeah, okay. So here is their exchange. Oh, I get to watch. We'll get the Savannah reaction video.
[00:19:23:05 - 00:19:26:03]
Savannah
Does she have contact lenses with color on them?
[00:19:26:03 - 00:19:34:01]
Jim
She does not, I don't think. Those are actual eyes. Are you sure? That's her eyes. And here they are.
[00:19:34:01 - 00:19:37:15]
Woody
I don't have anything to deceive you on. Of course I'm not deceiving you.
[00:19:38:15 - 00:19:40:23]
Woody
I'm engaging with you as a human being.
[00:19:41:27 - 00:19:42:03]
Woody
Why
[00:19:44:06 - 00:19:44:28]
Woody
would I deceive you?
[00:19:47:02 - 00:19:47:21]
Woody
There's no,
[00:19:49:05 - 00:19:50:22]
Woody
there's no reason for me to do that.
[00:19:53:17 - 00:19:54:00]
Jim
Okay.
[00:19:57:16 - 00:19:57:26]
Jim
All right.
[00:19:59:24 - 00:20:00:18]
Jim
Okay, good shot.
[00:20:00:18 - 00:20:07:16]
(Dramatic Music)
[00:20:12:19 - 00:20:13:25]
Woody
You're being real right now?
[00:20:15:00 - 00:20:15:27]
Woody
Always being real.
[00:20:25:10 - 00:20:25:15]
Woody
And
[00:20:26:22 - 00:20:30:27]
Woody
they're sitting with their faces about two inches apart. I don't.
[00:20:30:27 - 00:20:42:00]
Jim
And the whole time she's having the sterython with the smile and the wide open eyes. She's rocking her baby with her foot in a cradle.
[00:20:43:05 - 00:20:43:22]
Savannah
Honestly,
[00:20:44:22 - 00:20:46:29]
Savannah
it kind of felt like me at the eye doctor earlier this week.
[00:20:49:12 - 00:20:52:09]
Woody
She kind of gives off Natalie Harp vibes.
[00:20:52:09 - 00:21:00:17]
Jim
Yeah. The one where-- I was thinking the-- She's boiling bunnies in the other room. The snake from "Jungle Book." Yeah, oh yeah.
[00:21:00:17 - 00:21:07:24]
Savannah
Doing the hypnotizing. It's very much like that. I think she blinked a total of four times that entire trailer,
[00:21:08:27 - 00:21:15:15]
Savannah
because I was counting. And the last, I think three came in the last four seconds. That was pretty insane.
[00:21:15:15 - 00:21:32:14]
Jim
Yeah. Interesting. So psychologists and everybody have been weighing in on this. Analyzing her body language. Okay, usually if somebody holds their eyes open, it's because they're shocked, surprised, or super happy for a second.
[00:21:32:14 - 00:21:33:07]
Jim
Yeah.
[00:21:33:07 - 00:21:57:04]
Jim
But they don't hold them open. That long, yeah. So I think she's definitely, she's done that her whole life as she's used her eyes. But then they say it's never accompanied by a smile. A creepy smile. So it's all, she's doing, she's contorting her face and all her muscles in a certain way to manipulate. And to deceive.
[00:21:58:15 - 00:22:00:17]
Jim
And that's incredible.
[00:22:00:17 - 00:22:04:24]
Savannah
It's kind of like, aren't there horror movies now that are called like smile or something?
[00:22:04:24 - 00:22:06:11]
Woody
Oh, there was two of them.
[00:22:06:11 - 00:22:28:02]
Savannah
You know, it kind of gives that energy. You know, or like clowns that suddenly are scary. You know what I mean? Like it's just like, you take something that's supposed to be pure and it becomes sinister. If you're like, you know, you're creepy. So this is not like a film that is based off of true events. It's a documentary and that shit was legitimate.
[00:22:28:02 - 00:22:33:24]
Jim
That's all legit. That's all legit. He does a lot of experimental stuff and he kind of
[00:22:35:10 - 00:22:37:11]
Jim
blurs the line between
[00:22:38:17 - 00:22:54:02]
Jim
reality and stuff that he concocts and does for the things that he does. So it gets into some territory where he's created some situations. But that is real.
[00:22:54:02 - 00:22:54:17]
Savannah
Yeah.
[00:22:54:17 - 00:22:55:14]
Jim
That happened.
[00:22:55:14 - 00:22:56:16]
Savannah
Well, I mean--
[00:22:56:16 - 00:22:58:11]
Jim
That comes out in October. Yes.
[00:22:58:11 - 00:23:15:07]
Savannah
To have done what she did at the scale that she did it at. Do you know what I mean? It sort of screams. This person had to have been like manic in some way to be able to pull that off.
[00:23:15:07 - 00:23:16:11]
Jim
Yeah.
[00:23:16:11 - 00:23:17:13]
Savannah
Do you know what I mean?
[00:23:17:13 - 00:23:22:11]
Jim
Right. And to be able to keep that up. Yes. For years.
[00:23:22:11 - 00:23:41:20]
Savannah
That's what I'm saying. Cause if you've ever been around anybody who is experiencing extreme mania, it's like they have these big ideas and all this energy to pull it off, even when everybody else would give up. Do you guys remember when the fire festival happened? Oh yes. And that guy, I--
[00:23:41:20 - 00:23:42:18]
Jim
Same kind of person.
[00:23:42:18 - 00:24:01:13]
Savannah
Yes. I think his name is Billy or something. I did a deep dive on that guy and he's absolutely been going through mania different intervals of his life. And fire festival was like a part of that. So like his like unwavering optimism that like, I want to be the richest guy or it's been the greatest thing ever. He like genuinely believed that shit.
[00:24:01:13 - 00:24:05:24]
Woody
He did not. Everybody canceled the fire festival except for Major Lazer.
[00:24:06:29 - 00:24:14:16]
Woody
The only band that said, yeah, we'll go there. While people were eating their $55, styrofoam baloney sandwiches.
[00:24:14:16 - 00:24:28:15]
Savannah
I mean, do you guys remember when that happened? Like what it felt like to be on the air. And like scrolling on Twitter and like giggling at people and their styrofoam little leftovers being like, this is our gourmet meal. Yeah, what the hell man? What a time.
[00:24:28:15 - 00:24:35:12]
Woody
Wasn't there a part of a guy who was associated with them in some way that they were trying to get every on water or something like that?
[00:24:35:12 - 00:24:35:22]
Savannah
And--
[00:24:37:02 - 00:24:38:23]
Savannah
He went prepared to-- To
[00:24:38:23 - 00:24:39:15]
Woody
blow him.
[00:24:39:15 - 00:24:40:22]
(Laughing)
[00:24:40:22 - 00:24:45:10]
Jim
Yeah. To go all Abraham Lincoln. Do if you will.
[00:24:45:10 - 00:24:49:15]
Woody
And there was time you have to take one for the team. You can see the previous podcast.
[00:24:49:15 - 00:24:50:07]
Savannah
Yes.
[00:24:50:07 - 00:24:50:22]
Jim
Yes.
[00:24:50:22 - 00:24:53:08]
Savannah
Jeez, wow. Very interesting.
[00:24:53:08 - 00:24:56:16]
Jim
It is. So yeah, it's called You Can See Everything. And I was,
[00:24:57:27 - 00:25:13:02]
Jim
can you do that Woody? Do you have it in you to stare me down and tell me stuff with your eyes wide open and a big smile and hold it? I'll try.
[00:25:13:02 - 00:25:14:08]
(Clears Throat)
[00:25:15:09 - 00:25:28:27]
Speaker 7
You know, Jim, on 9-11, I was rescued by a bunch of very burly, very strong firemen. And then I came back with my crew to help clean up.
[00:25:30:06 - 00:25:30:17]
Jim
Really?
[00:25:30:17 - 00:25:31:15]
Speaker 7
Yes.
[00:25:33:22 - 00:25:38:08]
Speaker 7
You're being real. Yes, I'm very real. I have no reason to deceive you.
[00:25:39:25 - 00:25:40:25]
Savannah
I'm freaked out.
[00:25:40:25 - 00:25:42:17]
(Laughs)
[00:25:45:22 - 00:25:46:04]
Speaker 7
Okay.
[00:25:47:08 - 00:25:48:17]
Speaker 7
Do you have any follow up questions?
[00:25:50:20 - 00:25:51:09]
Speaker 7
Good shot.
[00:25:53:21 - 00:25:54:22]
Speaker 7
I'm totally real.
[00:25:57:17 - 00:26:01:27]
Speaker 7
What's more, I'm going to change the name of Murfreesboro to Murf America.
[00:26:04:03 - 00:26:05:15]
Speaker 7
All I need is a Sharpie.
[00:26:06:20 - 00:26:14:02]
Speaker 7
Because as we found out, you don't have to have the authority or permission. You just do it.
[00:26:15:11 - 00:26:22:07]
Speaker 7
Along with Lake America, New America, and the Gulf of America.
[00:26:23:10 - 00:26:25:03]
Speaker 7
Murf America is where I live.
[00:26:27:00 - 00:26:27:00]
(Laughs)
[00:26:27:00 - 00:26:40:00]
Jim
Not bad. You did okay. And I used his technique, which is, you don't say anything. Yeah, just leave it as silence. The other person will just, I mean, that's kind of the main thing. Because
[00:26:41:06 - 00:27:03:26]
Jim
he's just going, uh-huh. Because if you stop talking, people feel the pressure to fill that silence. But it's like, she's this immovable object and he's this irresistible force because he's got the skills, I can wait you out. And she's like, I can wait you out. One of us is gonna break.
[00:27:03:26 - 00:27:07:05]
Woody
Wow. If you want to see the trailer, it's all over TikTok.
[00:27:08:27 - 00:27:15:03]
Woody
But of course, if you see it and you like it, that's all gonna show up in your algorithm. You're gonna see it a lot.
[00:27:15:03 - 00:27:30:09]
Savannah
Yeah. Well, also circling back around to Lake of America and New America and just renaming absolutely fucking everything, did you see that South Park just won an Emmy and now they're renaming themselves to South America? South America.
[00:27:30:09 - 00:27:32:11]
Woody
Debut career of like next week.
[00:27:32:11 - 00:27:33:13]
Savannah
Those guys are heroes.
[00:27:33:13 - 00:27:34:08]
Woody
Pretty brilliant.
[00:27:34:08 - 00:27:37:26]
Savannah
Trey Parker and Matt Stone. So much respect to those dudes.
[00:27:37:26 - 00:27:38:20]
Woody
Showed it on?
[00:27:38:20 - 00:27:39:20]
Savannah
A hundred years.
[00:27:39:20 - 00:27:41:19]
Jim
Yeah, I mean they really, they kept it up.
[00:27:41:19 - 00:27:49:14]
Woody
90s, the schema? Yeah, it's on maybe a little less time than the Simpsons. But yeah, it's been a long, long time.
[00:27:49:14 - 00:27:50:06]
Savannah
So brilliant.
[00:27:50:06 - 00:27:54:18]
Jim
They are brilliant. Nobody's satirizes like they do.
[00:27:54:18 - 00:27:59:18]
Savannah
No, they're fabulous. Wait, there's like a really good opportunity for a joke here, you guys.
[00:27:59:18 - 00:28:00:20]
Woody
Yes, let's take it.
[00:28:00:20 - 00:28:06:24]
Savannah
You could be like sponsored by your mom. What do you mean? Your mom.
[00:28:06:24 - 00:28:07:05]
(Laughing)
[00:28:07:05 - 00:28:10:18]
Speaker 8
I think I mean, but like it's true. Her mom. Yeah.
[00:28:10:18 - 00:28:13:07]
Woody
Now you're not allowed to be in this commercial, all right.
[00:28:13:07 - 00:28:22:24]
Savannah
I cannot be in this now. I have to recuse myself from the whole thing. Why? Because there is a rule that like no F-bombs are allowed.
[00:28:22:24 - 00:28:24:25]
Jim
Did your mom, Judy Sandistella,
[00:28:26:20 - 00:28:30:07]
Jim
say you couldn't be in it or are you just taking yourself out of it?
[00:28:30:07 - 00:28:31:25]
Savannah
I'm taking myself out of it.
[00:28:31:25 - 00:28:37:14]
Jim
Oh, okay, so this is-- Okay. You're volunteering as tribute to not-- I'm gonna
[00:28:37:14 - 00:28:44:05]
Savannah
bow out of this gracefully, but I can say-- Can you be helpful? She works so hard. She does. I will be so helpful.
[00:28:44:05 - 00:28:51:16]
Jim
All right. She has been killing it in the real estate business. She has been really successful for a long time.
[00:28:51:16 - 00:28:59:21]
Savannah
She's the real estate agent people dream about. Like the one that annoys you that you feel like they don't like really earn their commission and you're just like, I don't wanna give them like literally any of this.
[00:28:59:21 - 00:29:00:08]
Jim
Right.
[00:29:00:08 - 00:29:06:22]
Savannah
She goes above and beyond so hard sometimes that it's like it is-- Stop being such a good real estate agent.
[00:29:06:22 - 00:29:15:00]
Woody
Your mom has that really good mom energy. And any real estate agent you hire, you want to be a good mom energy.
[00:29:15:00 - 00:29:33:15]
Savannah
For real, yeah, well she cares a lot. Like after we lost my dad, like the whole cultivating like a sense of home thing, she came so important to her. Okay. You know, so she really cares. I can say that for her, but I can't say anything else. I gotta go. I can feel the F bomb building in my brain.
[00:29:33:15 - 00:29:42:29]
Jim
Savannah's mom, she wrote a script. I don't know who wrote it. So we should honor the script. Honor the script. But not be beholden to the script.
[00:29:42:29 - 00:29:45:15]
Woody
All right, all right, okay. Hey, Jim,
[00:29:46:18 - 00:29:50:18]
Woody
have you heard that there are five Ds to make you need a realtor?
[00:29:51:23 - 00:30:02:00]
Jim
Let me guess. Among those Ds, be debt, drama, and deeply questionable life decisions.
[00:30:02:00 - 00:30:11:06]
Woody
You know, warm, but no. There's diamonds, diapers, divorce, downsizing, and death.
[00:30:13:15 - 00:30:19:05]
Jim
Sometimes those, well the last two go together. Yeah, you're downsizing if you're dead. Yes.
[00:30:21:05 - 00:30:26:13]
Jim
So basically the five horsemen of, why is my life like this?
[00:30:26:13 - 00:30:43:23]
Woody
Yes. Exactly, you get engaged. Well, congratulations, you need more space. You have a baby, congratulations. You have less sleep and somehow less space. You get divorced, congratulations. And now you need two of everything, including emotional support.
[00:30:43:23 - 00:30:45:08]
Jim
Downsizing?
[00:30:48:00 - 00:30:48:20]
All at once
That's when you--
[00:30:48:20 - 00:30:50:09]
(Laughing)
[00:30:52:21 - 00:31:03:07]
Woody
That's when you what? That's when you finally admit that your guest room is just a storage unit with a bed, pretending to be,
[00:31:05:17 - 00:31:10:29]
Woody
a bed pretending to have purpose. That's what I meant to say. It's a bed with existential-- Yes.
[00:31:12:00 - 00:31:12:02]
(Laughing)
[00:31:12:02 - 00:31:13:29]
Jim
What am I?
[00:31:15:08 - 00:31:16:12]
Jim
And what about death?
[00:31:16:12 - 00:31:19:28]
Woody
Well, we're not joking about that one. Okay.
[00:31:20:29 - 00:31:22:13]
Savannah
My dad is dead, you guys.
[00:31:22:13 - 00:31:25:15]
Woody
Still? You said you weren't gonna be part of this.
[00:31:25:15 - 00:31:26:14]
(Laughing)
[00:31:28:26 - 00:31:32:20]
Savannah
I'm just saying, the Dead Dad Club is like the inception of her whole career.
[00:31:32:20 - 00:31:34:24]
Jim
Yeah, kinda, to be real. Yeah.
[00:31:34:24 - 00:31:35:10]
Woody
To be, yes.
[00:31:35:10 - 00:31:36:08]
Jim
Right? Yeah.
[00:31:37:11 - 00:31:39:22]
Jim
So when life hits all the
[00:31:39:22 - 00:31:54:19]
Woody
Ds, well, that's when you need to call Judy Knapp, with Dutton Real Estate, Middle Tennessee's real estate expert, professional problem solver, and part-time therapist for houses and the humans inside them.
[00:31:54:19 - 00:32:04:12]
Jim
She handles transitions with precision, heart and hump, no, and humor. Humor. And humor. Sorry, I misread that.
[00:32:04:12 - 00:32:07:11]
Woody
And probably a strong coffee and silent prayer.
[00:32:09:15 - 00:32:11:02]
Jim
Sounds like she deserves a medal.
[00:32:11:02 - 00:32:15:28]
Woody
Or at least a very large commission check. Wink, wink.
[00:32:15:28 - 00:32:19:08]
Jim
Savannah, what is her number?
[00:32:19:08 - 00:32:32:08]
Savannah
I got this, you guys, it's 615-294-4680. And she can text, and you can call her, you can text and call her. I encourage you to do that. She's fun to talk to.
[00:32:32:08 - 00:32:37:03]
Jim
Now say the numbers again slowly. And in a seductive tone.
[00:32:38:06 - 00:32:38:07]
Jim
Ew!
[00:32:38:07 - 00:32:39:02]
(Laughing)
[00:32:39:02 - 00:32:41:20]
Savannah
It's for my mom. It's my mom. She would resent that so much.
[00:32:41:20 - 00:32:42:16]
Jim
Your mom.
[00:32:42:16 - 00:32:50:20]
Savannah
Yeah, my mom, 615-294-4680.
[00:32:51:20 - 00:32:56:26]
Woody
Remember that, Judy Knapp, Savannah's mom has got it going on. Yes,
[00:32:56:26 - 00:33:05:19]
Jim
judy.yourtnhomefinders.com. Thank you for being a spot, Judy.
[00:33:07:14 - 00:33:10:11]
Jim
Dot yourtnhomefinders.com.
[00:33:11:14 - 00:33:16:09]
Jim
Just list, just sold, just call Judy. Judy Knapp with Dutton Real Estate.
[00:33:16:09 - 00:33:17:29]
Speaker 7
Way to go, Judy, Judy.
[00:33:17:29 - 00:33:19:09]
(Laughing)
[00:33:21:10 - 00:33:26:27]
Savannah
Will this get approved? I don't know. We'll see. Oh wait. Oh shit.
[00:33:28:02 - 00:33:28:03]
(Laughing)
[00:33:28:03 - 00:33:29:00]
All at once
This is why I'm not supposed to be in it.
[00:33:30:12 - 00:33:53:01]
Savannah
Also, and then circling back around to 9-11, because I feel like this podcast is gonna come out on 9-11. Is it not? Yeah. And it's like 25 years to the day. Oh yeah. I think because I was in the fourth grade when this happened, it was like such a formative part of my childhood that I am fixated on it. I feel like a little bit every day of my life. And like have been, you know, it's always there.
[00:33:53:01 - 00:34:00:01]
Jim
You almost have never lived in a world that didn't have 9-11 and all the effects of it.
[00:34:00:01 - 00:34:01:24]
Speaker 8
Truly, yeah.
[00:34:01:24 - 00:34:07:18]
Jim
Like you're not aware before you're four years old. So like this has been your whole life.
[00:34:07:18 - 00:34:19:12]
Savannah
That's what I'm saying. I was like in the fourth grade, I remember I was at school and my grandmother picked me up early and my parents were on a cruise. I remember like getting home early enough to see like the second plane hit and like watching on television and just being like, what is going on?
[00:34:20:22 - 00:34:29:07]
Savannah
But earlier today, I like came across these stories, like, you know, that Mr. Rogers saying, like look for the heroes when bad things happen and whoever.
[00:34:30:16 - 00:34:39:19]
Savannah
I came across all these stories of like rescue dogs and like guide dogs on 9-11 that just absolutely like tore me up in the best way.
[00:34:39:19 - 00:34:43:10]
Jim
They're amazing creatures. Dogs are really a gift.
[00:34:43:10 - 00:35:00:28]
Savannah
Yeah, like there was a Labrador guide dog named Salty who like guided his human down the 71st floor and this dude tried to let Salty go to just like run and save himself and Salty would not abandon him and like got him out and kept him safe. Like, ah!
[00:35:00:28 - 00:35:09:26]
Woody
Dogs are the most pure souls. They're, they always say, you know, like, and God did not give them wings so you won't know their angels.
[00:35:09:26 - 00:35:11:20]
Savannah
Yeah, they're so sweet.
[00:35:11:20 - 00:35:22:11]
Jim
I said that one time, my daughter, she was a teenager and I'm like, dogs are so pure. And she's like, because they haven't been tainted by original sin.
[00:35:23:18 - 00:35:32:15]
Jim
And she's not even religious. She's just like, you know, pulls that out. Some of you are a little assholes. Yeah, demons.
[00:35:32:15 - 00:35:37:05]
Woody
Yeah, they'll be nice and they'll claw you. Just go, I just gotta remind you I'm a cat.
[00:35:40:15 - 00:35:46:16]
Savannah
Also, have you guys ever like, have you been to the memorial like at One World Trade Center?
[00:35:46:16 - 00:36:02:17]
Jim
No. No. I've only been to New York City like once or twice since 9-11 and it was always for something. Right, it's a limited time. Yeah, I didn't have time and for so many years, I don't know if it's still the same, you had to make reservations.
[00:36:02:17 - 00:36:03:23]
Jim
Oh my goodness.
[00:36:03:23 - 00:36:08:12]
Jim
So many people wanna see and be there that they can't accommodate ever.
[00:36:08:12 - 00:36:12:27]
Woody
This is a, you know, obviously the world changed, you know, in a second.
[00:36:14:00 - 00:36:15:15]
Woody
We were on the air when it happened.
[00:36:15:15 - 00:36:19:17]
Jim
Talking about the most banal thing
[00:36:19:17 - 00:36:27:09]
Woody
you can imagine. There was a girl that came in right before the first plane hit and we did an interview with her. She wrote a song and performed a song about--
[00:36:28:10 - 00:36:30:09]
Woody
AOL Instant Messenger.
[00:36:30:09 - 00:36:33:02]
Savannah
Wow, that's crazy.
[00:36:33:02 - 00:36:36:03]
Woody
Which was like way back. The last for the past.
[00:36:36:03 - 00:36:40:24]
Savannah
Was it some kind of like email my heart? You know what I mean? Yeah, it was, yeah.
[00:36:40:24 - 00:36:41:12]
Woody
Pretty much.
[00:36:41:12 - 00:36:41:29]
Savannah
Interesting.
[00:36:41:29 - 00:36:56:02]
Woody
And you know, and then, you know, remember standing there and watching the plane hit. And it looked like it was like, from our viewpoint, it looked like it was like a private plane, like a small plane. The first, and then all of a sudden, you know, yeah.
[00:36:56:02 - 00:36:58:23]
Jim
Yeah, we were watching it on a small TV in the studio.
[00:36:58:23 - 00:37:04:23]
Woody
And I always remember going home that day and there was no planes in the sky. And everything was just eerily quiet.
[00:37:04:23 - 00:37:05:10]
Savannah
Yeah.
[00:37:05:10 - 00:37:34:15]
Jim
And I know people who go like, oh, that sounds so ridiculous. But we, I mean, okay, so they hit the World Trade Center, then they hit the Pentagon. And you know, so they have all these things keep happening. You're like, what is coming next? I remember like, we need to lock the doors at the front of the station because who knows if we're a target? Like we had no idea. And everybody anywhere was thinking the exact same thing.
[00:37:34:15 - 00:37:43:04]
Savannah
Right. No, that's why my grandmother picked me up from school is like they thought there was like a bomb threat or something. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like even like get the kids out of the school. It was like, that's pretty wild.
[00:37:44:12 - 00:37:58:05]
Savannah
But Joyce also added layer of this. You guys were in Nashville by the time 9-11 happened, but you came to Nashville from New York. So like, I feel like New York in particular had to, like it has to hold a certain kind of place in your hearts as people who like.
[00:37:58:05 - 00:38:05:16]
Woody
We were in Albany, New York, which is state capital, but it's like, which it's just rednecks with different accents.
[00:38:05:16 - 00:38:06:18]
(Laughing)
[00:38:06:18 - 00:38:12:18]
Woody
But you would visit a lot. Yeah, we'd go down and take listeners down to see Letterman and stuff like that.
[00:38:12:18 - 00:38:22:21]
Jim
It's like the same distance from Nashville to Gatlinburg. Pigeon Forge. So yeah, I mean, you definitely, you know people from there.
[00:38:22:21 - 00:38:42:20]
Savannah
Especially like being in the radio industry, right? Sure, yeah. I don't know. I've been to the memorial site every time I go up to New York, like I make a point to go there. And I learned something today also that I had no idea about. Whenever I went to the memorial site, which is just so beautiful and it's like so breathtaking, it's almost, it's just hard to describe.
[00:38:44:09 - 00:39:38:14]
Savannah
There are always like a limited number of white roses, like on like some of the names that are listed on the memorial. And the memorial is like this gigantic like crater fountain thing in the ground and all the victims, like their names are engraved into the stone. And so I always wondered like when I would go there and I would see random white roses, I had assumed that like people were leaving them like four loved ones specifically or something like that. But I found out today that there's a first responder from September 11th and his name, everyone knows him as like Mikey Flowers. But he was one of the first responders that day and he actually also owns like a flower shop, not that far from One World Trade Center. And ever since that day happened, like once they got the memorial made and everything, his flower shop donates white roses for free in perpetuity every single day so that they can go put a white rose on the name of the person whose birthday it is that day.
[00:39:39:16 - 00:39:54:04]
Savannah
Isn't that so incredible? And they like they work with the 9-11 museum that's onsite to make sure that it happens. And the staff of the museum like send photos to the families of those people who got their rose that day.
[00:39:54:04 - 00:39:55:25]
Jim
Sure that-- Isn't that
[00:39:55:25 - 00:39:56:09]
Savannah
amazing?
[00:39:56:09 - 00:39:57:14]
Jim
That probably
[00:39:58:23 - 00:40:04:19]
Jim
is very meaningful. I don't know what kind of what it does for the families, but that's great.
[00:40:04:19 - 00:40:12:11]
Savannah
Yeah, it just makes you wanna like give Mikey Flowers all your money. You know what I mean? You're like I don't even need anything, just here's this for the white roses.
[00:40:12:11 - 00:40:38:09]
Jim
That's another thing that like, obviously it didn't get sustained, but the people that were like, within a day or two of 9-11 were like, how do I give blood? Because they're sending blood to New York. And just like people were clamoring to do anything for anybody to help out, which was amazing.
[00:40:39:21 - 00:40:55:08]
Woody
It did bring the country together. I mean, there was a sense of patriotism and unity that all of America had. And sadly it takes something like that to bring us all together because we are a super divided country.
[00:40:57:08 - 00:41:11:02]
Woody
And sadly, the news came out this week that the government lied about the air quality. In New York. In New York. They're saying that more people have died since 9-11.
[00:41:11:02 - 00:41:12:22]
Savannah
Because of 9-11 related.
[00:41:12:22 - 00:41:26:04]
Woody
Yeah, that died in the actual tragedy. Really? Which is just sad. That's awful. It's ruins. If Giuliani had any kind of cred left, that pretty much takes care of that.
[00:41:26:04 - 00:41:27:10]
Savannah
Yeah, jeez.
[00:41:27:10 - 00:41:30:26]
Woody
He kind of became a, you know, paint your hair loser.
[00:41:32:04 - 00:41:32:07]
(Laughing)
[00:41:32:07 - 00:41:33:19]
Jim
Yeah.
[00:41:33:19 - 00:41:34:14]
Savannah
Yeah.
[00:41:34:14 - 00:41:35:19]
Jim
Kind of pathetic.
[00:41:35:19 - 00:41:41:25]
Savannah
Bless. Well, why don't we talk about something equally divisive, which is hills we're all willing to die on. Was that your idea?
[00:41:41:25 - 00:41:44:11]
Jim
Yeah, the smallest hill.
[00:41:44:11 - 00:41:45:21]
Savannah
Oh, okay, so it's a good one.
[00:41:45:21 - 00:42:13:00]
Jim
It's a perfect bridge talking about the dividing of America because I love fighting about something passionately that really doesn't matter. Because there's no consequences to it. But I think we all will sit there and, you know, you'll have those arguments in your head or you just, you're like, oh, I can't take it anymore. This is the way it needs to be. I will open it up by saying,
[00:42:14:07 - 00:42:35:11]
Jim
I will forever use two spaces after a period when I'm typing on my phone or anything else. And I will always use the Oxford comma, which for some reason somebody said, we need to drop that last comma when mentioning multiple things.
[00:42:35:11 - 00:42:54:14]
Savannah
Interesting. I agree with you on the Oxford comma thing. I feel like I once saw someone say that like, oh, it's someone who can't commit to a thought. Fuck you. I have a degree, okay, in journalism. Like I know how to write shit. I can use an Oxford comma. Yeah. They have a place.
[00:42:54:14 - 00:43:14:04]
Jim
Commas create a pause, right? While you're speaking it mentally or if you're speaking it out loud and it necessitates a pause. So if you have a list of things, you're talking about, oh, here are the things I'm gonna put, you know, in my pumpkin pie, I'm gonna use cinnamon and nutmeg
[00:43:15:21 - 00:43:22:09]
Jim
and sugar, right? Every one of those, you need a pause after each one of those. Cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar.
[00:43:22:09 - 00:43:23:01]
(Laughing)
[00:43:24:06 - 00:43:27:27]
Jim
If you don't put the pause there with the comma,
[00:43:27:27 - 00:43:29:20]
Savannah
you're screwing everybody up.
[00:43:29:20 - 00:43:30:04]
Woody
True.
[00:43:30:04 - 00:43:39:25]
Savannah
Yeah. But the thing that I'm a little stuck on personally is two spaces after every period. One space, sure, but why two?
[00:43:39:25 - 00:43:45:14]
Jim
Well, it's to put further separation between sentences.
[00:43:45:14 - 00:43:50:18]
Savannah
I just feel like maybe the way I'm imagining it would look so goofy. For ease of reading. Okay.
[00:43:50:18 - 00:43:51:26]
Jim
Yeah.
[00:43:53:11 - 00:43:57:29]
Jim
It's a guy who's doing design work right now in layouts.
[00:43:59:12 - 00:44:05:21]
Jim
It's only more obvious. White space is needed to properly convey meaning.
[00:44:05:21 - 00:44:07:00]
Savannah
How do you feel about this, Woody?
[00:44:07:00 - 00:44:10:12]
Woody
I use one space. Yeah.
[00:44:10:12 - 00:44:13:28]
Savannah
I feel like if I saw two spaces, I would be like, is this a typo?
[00:44:13:28 - 00:44:15:22]
All at once
It's suspicious.
[00:44:15:22 - 00:44:17:04]
(Laughing)
[00:44:17:04 - 00:44:18:09]
All at once
My eyes are so much space.
[00:44:19:27 - 00:44:20:29]
All at once
What are they trying to tell me?
[00:44:22:18 - 00:44:38:21]
Jim
I guess the Altaner argument would be like, okay, well the period says the sentence is done. So you don't need two spaces, you just need one space. But I think you need two spaces to make it different from just every other word next to each other.
[00:44:38:21 - 00:44:46:27]
Savannah
Interesting. I sort of want to force you to type out a paragraph sometime soon and then let me look at it.
[00:44:46:27 - 00:44:47:18]
(Laughing)
[00:44:47:18 - 00:44:52:02]
Savannah
I can decide if it looks as fucked as I feel like it's gonna look.
[00:44:52:02 - 00:44:55:11]
Woody
Well, I
[00:44:56:22 - 00:45:13:18]
Woody
use proper grammar and proper punctuation in texts. And I know a lot of people don't, especially now. And people have actually said that using a period at the end of a sentence is like an insult. It's aggressive.
[00:45:13:18 - 00:45:14:26]
Savannah
It does feel.
[00:45:14:26 - 00:45:15:26]
Woody
Why?
[00:45:17:10 - 00:45:22:02]
Woody
It's how we should write. I mean, we're losing our ability to be smart.
[00:45:22:02 - 00:45:24:07]
Savannah
That is true. I will agree with you on that point.
[00:45:24:07 - 00:45:36:02]
Jim
Because we've substituted the period for an exclamation point or something. You know what I mean? It's like, it's taken on way more meaning for some people, period, than its original intention.
[00:45:36:02 - 00:45:41:00]
Woody
Yeah, so would the exclamation point be super aggressive? Like, good morning!
[00:45:41:00 - 00:45:44:23]
Savannah
I think generally exclamation points are seen as like cheerful.
[00:45:44:23 - 00:45:46:11]
Jim
Yeah, like happy.
[00:45:46:11 - 00:46:16:20]
Savannah
Yeah, I think emoji culture has contributed to this and also that because of like instant communication that we always have access to now, that periods feel very final and it feels like you're ending something when most of our conversations sort of feel like they're just never ending and they're ongoing. Just whether you say it or not, because it's like, who formally says goodbye anymore? To be like, this conversation is over. You don't, you just sort of like pop out and pop in and that will, it's like friends who have keys to each other's apartment.
[00:46:16:20 - 00:46:20:08]
Woody
That would be interesting if you end every text with goodbye.
[00:46:20:08 - 00:46:23:06]
Savannah
Right, like nobody does that. So I think that periods
[00:46:24:06 - 00:46:24:12]
Savannah
feel like it.
[00:46:24:12 - 00:46:25:21]
Woody
How would I say goodbye?
[00:46:25:21 - 00:46:44:16]
Jim
I want everybody listening and watching the podcast to just randomly, then it'd be the only word. Have it be a sentence. You can put two spaces after it if you want. But just end your text conversation with somebody by saying goodbye for the period. They're going
[00:46:44:16 - 00:46:46:28]
Savannah
to have anxiety attacks over that.
[00:46:46:28 - 00:46:50:02]
Jim
And then I want to know what the reactions are from the person.
[00:46:50:02 - 00:46:52:07]
Speaker 8
They're going to be all over the place.
[00:46:52:07 - 00:46:54:08]
Woody
All the texts are going to come back. You mad bro?
[00:46:54:08 - 00:47:03:05]
Savannah
Right, like what did I do? What are you talking about? I think you just broke up with me. Literally people are going to freak. If anybody does that, definitely report back.
[00:47:03:05 - 00:47:05:10]
Woody
Have a nice day, period.
[00:47:07:00 - 00:47:10:18]
Jim
So is that the hill you're willing to die on? Or is that just an offshoot of mine?
[00:47:10:18 - 00:47:18:08]
Woody
Actually that was the one I was thinking about. We've lost our ability to use proper grammar or punctuation.
[00:47:18:08 - 00:47:25:12]
Jim
Okay, Savannah, do you have a small but fiery hill you want to die on?
[00:47:25:12 - 00:47:29:19]
Savannah
Here's the thing, everything's relative, all right? Small, who's to say?
[00:47:32:11 - 00:47:50:12]
Savannah
And I will preface this by saying that dying on any hill is something that I am loath to do in the sense that I feel like when you know better, you do better, and you should always allow people the opportunity to learn and grow and change their minds and whatever.
[00:47:51:15 - 00:47:51:27]
Savannah
But
[00:47:53:13 - 00:47:59:01]
Savannah
I have died on this hill, I think, by proxy and sort of for fun, and I'm willing to be wrong.
[00:47:59:01 - 00:47:59:23]
Jim
Okay.
[00:47:59:23 - 00:48:01:23]
Savannah
But like, okay, so my brother,
[00:48:03:00 - 00:48:09:10]
Savannah
he has been so convinced for such a long time, to the point where he gets pissed anytime someone brings this up.
[00:48:09:10 - 00:48:13:19]
Jim
Uh oh, so he's not gonna like what's about to be spoken. All right.
[00:48:14:22 - 00:48:21:29]
Savannah
Sorry, Greg. No, I mean, he is convinced that Helen Keller is not real, that she was a fucking psyop.
[00:48:21:29 - 00:48:27:07]
Jim
There's a lot of people that believe that today. She wasn't real? Yes, that she's made up.
[00:48:27:07 - 00:48:38:14]
Savannah
So, okay, so here's why. And this, like my brother would tell you, and it makes me laugh when I think about it, because there is a point to be had, right? And so I've done some investigative journalism since, trying to make sense of it all.
[00:48:39:22 - 00:48:45:13]
Savannah
But if you remember from like grade school, you know, there was this huge emphasis on this woman, Helen Keller, who like--
[00:48:45:13 - 00:48:49:18]
Jim
She can't see. She's blind, deaf, and mute.
[00:48:49:18 - 00:48:50:09]
Woody
Yes.
[00:48:50:09 - 00:48:57:14]
Savannah
And you know, not only did she write, I think like, anywhere from 13 to 30 books or some shit like that.
[00:48:57:14 - 00:48:59:12]
Jim
While living in darkness and silence.
[00:48:59:12 - 00:49:05:26]
Savannah
Right, and not being able to speak, but she could speak somehow, five languages, they said.
[00:49:07:07 - 00:49:14:13]
Jim
Yeah, I forget the exact process, but yeah, it has something to do with, like touch or--
[00:49:14:13 - 00:49:15:26]
Speaker 8
Something in the palm of her hand.
[00:49:15:26 - 00:49:18:00]
Jim
Yeah, like a braille type situation.
[00:49:18:00 - 00:49:20:12]
Savannah
But they also said that she could like fly a plane.
[00:49:20:12 - 00:49:21:18]
Woody
No.
[00:49:21:18 - 00:49:30:10]
Savannah
Yeah, like it is on the internet that like she flew a plane. And so it's like, you're telling me somebody-- For a second? And here's the thing, here's the thing.
[00:49:30:10 - 00:49:30:27]
All at once
Yeah.
[00:49:31:29 - 00:49:33:13]
Savannah
No, they said 20 minutes.
[00:49:33:13 - 00:49:35:21]
Woody
20 minutes, okay, all right. 20 minutes is what's documented.
[00:49:35:21 - 00:49:42:04]
Jim
But if you're going straight, as long as you're not going down, anybody can fly a plane.
[00:49:42:04 - 00:49:45:08]
Woody
There was another pilot who said, "Oh, take the wheel for a minute, Helen."
[00:49:45:08 - 00:49:46:02]
Savannah
Well,
[00:49:47:02 - 00:49:47:27]
Savannah
she also like--
[00:49:47:27 - 00:49:50:16]
Jim
I gotta text somebody, take the wheel.
[00:49:50:16 - 00:50:05:26]
Savannah
She's blind, she can't see, she's deaf, she can't hear, she's mute, she doesn't speak, but she wrote books, like led a whole political movement, flew a plane, she graduated from Harvard, fucking how?
[00:50:05:26 - 00:50:07:23]
Woody
I had never heard all that.
[00:50:07:23 - 00:50:14:00]
Jim
The story of her life is-- It's incredible. It's called the miracle worker, it's a miracle. It's incredible, it's incredible.
[00:50:14:00 - 00:50:22:08]
Woody
It's a fair bit savored on family guy, was-- Oh no. She's hiding in the attic when the Nazis come into the house.
[00:50:22:08 - 00:50:25:23]
Jim
Are you confusing Anne Frank with Helen Keller? I am.
[00:50:26:28 - 00:50:26:29]
(Laughing)
[00:50:26:29 - 00:50:31:19]
All at once
This is the end, I was about to say the same thing. The end, goodbye. It
[00:50:33:06 - 00:50:36:18]
All at once
is fantastic. There is an episode of "Bare's Eye."
[00:50:36:18 - 00:50:40:20]
Jim
She's a deaf and blind, and mute, and she hid from the Nazis.
[00:50:42:10 - 00:51:00:13]
Woody
But the point was, Peter Griffin is in the, his, well, they're trying to be quiet to not make noise for the Nazis, and he takes a bag of chips, slowly eating up, and they're going, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh. Okay, there, I had to get that out.
[00:51:00:13 - 00:51:04:29]
Jim
Helen Keller never heard those chips. I know. Well.
[00:51:07:23 - 00:51:18:17]
Savannah
She can eat snacks all day. I will say I was terrified for a second, because there is a family guy episode, which, you know, nothing is off limits for these kinds of cartoons. And Helen Keller was featured, and I thought you were about to talk about that, and then I was just like, oh my God.
[00:51:19:19 - 00:51:22:13]
Savannah
This is, I can do Abraham Lincoln, I don't know if I can do this one.
[00:51:23:26 - 00:51:23:27]
(Laughing)
[00:51:23:27 - 00:51:25:06]
Woody
But, I don't know.
[00:51:25:06 - 00:51:29:16]
All at once
Was there a sexual maneuver called Helen Keller? Oh God, probably. All right.
[00:51:30:17 - 00:51:31:24]
Woody
Somebody look it up and let us know.
[00:51:31:24 - 00:51:53:02]
Savannah
But I just, you know, I'm loath to take something away from women or people with disabilities. Like, you know, I know people who have defied odds. Like, they were told they would never, and they fucking did, and I saw it with my own eyes. So it's like, I don't wanna like, throw trash on her legacy. But it is kind of funny to think maybe she was like a cyop. And also, do you know what I found?
[00:51:54:13 - 00:51:54:14]
(Laughing)
[00:51:54:14 - 00:52:00:27]
Savannah
In the course of my research, this woman was apparently best friends with fucking Alexander Graham Bell.
[00:52:02:05 - 00:52:05:08]
Savannah
That dude invented the fucking telephone. So doesn't it kind of like--
[00:52:05:08 - 00:52:07:10]
Jim
Well, she became a celebrity.
[00:52:07:10 - 00:52:08:01]
Jim
Right.
[00:52:08:01 - 00:52:13:28]
Jim
Because of, you know, her story and the book written about her. So they would probably be at the same parties.
[00:52:13:28 - 00:53:00:14]
Savannah
Yeah, I guess. But they were like super homies and like had all these kinds of shared ideas kind of like about eugenics, which is not great. But it was like about how they wanted to like make it illegal for a deaf person to marry another deaf person so that you wouldn't create more deaf people or something. Oh, that's messed up. It's so messed up. But I just feel like, you know, I complain all the time about the tech bros of today's day and age and how I feel like they're all on some shit that I'm a victim to, whether we know it or not. Oh yeah. And so, you know, when I think about like, well, I feel like Alexander Graham Bell was probably a tech bro back then. You know, like he was their version of that. And so like, was Helen Keller a cyop and they were in cahoots together and they're like, how much can we have fun making everybody feel so fucking, you know what I mean? And it's all fake. We could just lie to them like it's like sensationalized.
[00:53:00:14 - 00:53:04:05]
Woody
Maybe it's the Mandela effect. We've all just talked ourselves into believing all that.
[00:53:04:05 - 00:53:20:02]
Jim
I think it's more unbelievable that people could be in cahoots at that level to pull off such a conspiracy that is far less believable than the miracle of her being able to communicate.
[00:53:20:02 - 00:53:40:12]
Savannah
Yeah, well, I mean, I also wondered, you know, like I think she lost her hearing and her sight when she was like 18 months old. And then like even being blind or deaf, like that's relative. Like it's not necessarily that you only see black or that you totally can't hear anything. You know what I mean? Like it could be warped. It could be like you're underwater. It could be like-- Maybe she just needed glasses.
[00:53:40:12 - 00:53:41:10]
(Laughing)
[00:53:41:10 - 00:53:54:11]
Savannah
Well, it's just like, you know, she was like born in Alabama. Sorry, I'm going on such a rant about this. Yeah, shut up. This is good, good, good. She's in Alabama and you know, they had Alabama doctors of like the 18, late 1800s. You know what I mean? I'm not that great now.
[00:53:55:20 - 00:54:09:05]
Savannah
I was born there so I can diss. But I'm just saying like, is it like how much could they really test her abilities? And there are some who say that like, if you clapped and her handler wasn't around, she would react. And so they're like, that bitch can hear. And so it's just like--
[00:54:09:05 - 00:54:09:28]
(Laughing)
[00:54:09:28 - 00:54:13:02]
Woody
It's like the same rumors that go around. The Stevie Wonder can actually see.
[00:54:13:02 - 00:54:39:00]
Savannah
Right, so it's like, is it like, is she, can she see and hear more than she says, but like she's like milking this and it like becomes part of the war. Right, or is like her handler actually the person with all of this incredible stuff to say and all these poems where she's talking about colors that she's never seen. It's actually like her handler who just like needed somebody to be a front man for her own ideas.
[00:54:40:06 - 00:54:46:22]
Woody
Yeah, I wrote this thing down and Helen just dictated it to me. You know, the hand signals and stuff. So yeah, it's good.
[00:54:46:22 - 00:54:48:02]
Jim
I have a theory.
[00:54:48:02 - 00:54:48:21]
Savannah
What's that?
[00:54:48:21 - 00:54:58:08]
Jim
I have a theory because I know people that are under the age of 35 who think that the moon landing was faked.
[00:54:59:08 - 00:55:02:03]
Jim
And some of this-- Kind of people over the age of 35. Oh yeah, yeah.
[00:55:02:03 - 00:55:02:25]
Speaker 8
I don't think that, yeah.
[00:55:04:11 - 00:55:13:04]
Jim
Part of it is I think if you weren't alive then, there's a certain arrogance that anybody that was before your time was stupid.
[00:55:13:04 - 00:55:14:10]
All at once
Sure, yeah, that's true.
[00:55:14:10 - 00:55:26:08]
Jim
So you automatically assume we're of the modern age, we're smarter, so how would they able to do something amazing back then when people were dumb? Which is not
[00:55:27:29 - 00:55:28:27]
Jim
real, but--
[00:55:28:27 - 00:55:52:07]
Savannah
Well, in a lot of ways I do think that's backwards. Like I was talking earlier today as I talk, I feel like every day about how I think that we are collectively getting dumber and I find this very disturbing. I know I say this like every time I see you guys, but I'm so close to like literally getting a flip phone and living off the grid. I don't know how to grow my own food yet, but like I'm so close. I'm just saying like, I don't know,
[00:55:53:15 - 00:55:58:26]
Savannah
are we actually any smarter than the people who came before us? Or are we just--
[00:56:00:15 - 00:56:05:16]
Jim
Do we have technology and systems that prop us up and make us look like we're-- Make us smartly,
[00:56:05:16 - 00:56:18:28]
Savannah
like sustained focus. Again, when you think about somebody like Helen Keller being able to overcome these incredible odds, well she wasn't scrolling on her phone 50 bajillion hours a day. She had nothing better to do, God fuck, especially if she was blind to death.
[00:56:18:28 - 00:56:25:00]
All at once
She got nothing to do but just like find anything. We need to throw darts? No, I'm saying no.
[00:56:25:00 - 00:56:27:19]
Savannah
You know, she probably was a fucking genius.
[00:56:27:19 - 00:56:29:11]
Woody
She's great at cornhole.
[00:56:29:11 - 00:56:33:16]
Jim
I mean, you look at people like, you know, say the beginning of our country.
[00:56:34:19 - 00:56:52:26]
Jim
There's people that were like, okay, they were the president, they were also a gifted painter. They could play six instruments. They wrote 14 books. They were Renaissance people. Totally. I can have two apps open at the same time.
[00:56:52:26 - 00:57:00:17]
Savannah
Right, and I think it's because, like, boredom has turned into something that is like, people can make money off of it.
[00:57:00:17 - 00:57:02:09]
Jim
There is no boredom anymore.
[00:57:02:09 - 00:57:37:09]
Savannah
Exactly, that's what I'm saying. It's like the second you get bored or you feel an uncomfortable emotion or something, what's your reflexive response? You pull out your phone, you start scrolling. And so time that you would have used in your imagination if you were Helen Keller and had nowhere else to go, suddenly you're just like giving money. You would invent things. Yeah, no one invents anything. We're just looking at like AI slop and trends that everyone is like, even trends are starting to disturb me. Where I'm like, does anyone have an original thought anymore? We're all just copycatting everybody else. And then this week I saw like AI models that it's kind of like,
[00:57:38:10 - 00:57:39:11]
Savannah
instead of just
[00:57:40:18 - 00:57:47:06]
Savannah
like deep fakes, it's almost like it's a total hologram of a different person. Like instead of a filter just for your face, it's your whole fucking body.
[00:57:47:06 - 00:57:48:12]
Jim
And it could be- Like an avatar.
[00:57:48:12 - 00:57:58:26]
Savannah
It could be Woody, yeah. And he would have an avatar that would look like, I don't know, fucking me or something. And you would not know that it wasn't him. And that's crazy.
[00:57:58:26 - 00:58:25:21]
Jim
I have something weird that occurred to me this week. And what is that? And I attained a tiny bit of notoriety because I get all like the local news stations, TikTok accounts. And so I was watching a story that News 2's TikTok was playing. And my comment was,
[00:58:26:23 - 00:58:30:05]
Jim
is this person that's speaking AI?
[00:58:31:17 - 00:58:34:07]
Jim
If not, that's worse.
[00:58:34:07 - 00:58:43:24]
Speaker 8
Watch the child. He steps off the school bus and begins to cross the road. The bus is stopped. It's red lights are flashed.
[00:58:43:24 - 00:58:45:02]
Jim
Is that AI?
[00:58:46:23 - 00:58:48:25]
Woody
There is a certain-
[00:58:48:25 - 00:58:51:14]
Jim
There's newscaster inflections.
[00:58:52:23 - 00:58:58:13]
Woody
And he got off the bus and looked both ways before crossing.
[00:58:58:13 - 00:59:07:13]
Jim
But there's that old style of news anchor. And there's more coming up at 10. It's a little sing song. This is just flat.
[00:59:07:13 - 00:59:10:24]
Woody
That sounds like the AI voiceovers you hear on TikTok.
[00:59:10:24 - 00:59:17:14]
Speaker 8
The driver of this car never stops. The vehicle passes just feet from the child.
[00:59:18:29 - 00:59:34:13]
Jim
So people were coming at me in the comments like, why aren't you focusing on the story? It's about kids safety and busing. I'm like, because I'd like to know if a human was telling me a story. And if it's not a human, I wanna know transparency.
[00:59:34:13 - 00:59:35:17]
Jim
Right, did I tell you?
[00:59:35:17 - 00:59:49:02]
Jim
Yes, somebody in the comments said, if you go to the end of the report, at the last second, you can see the woman who is speaking on the news set. So it was her the whole time.
[00:59:49:02 - 00:59:50:16]
Woody
She's just terrible at her job.
[00:59:50:16 - 01:00:11:17]
Savannah
Well, but you know what? Here's the thing. I think you still get credit for the question. And I don't even know that unless you've heard from the TV station that it even is a person. And I say that because there are news channels that are using AI reporters. And they're not fucking saying anything about it.
[01:00:11:17 - 01:00:20:16]
Jim
You can literally, even if it is a real person, they can upload their photo and AI will animate them and have them say whatever.
[01:00:20:16 - 01:00:36:16]
Savannah
Right, so I just think it's a fair question. And I think so much of what we see now is like, nobody knows what's real anymore. And I think that's why I feel increasingly like I don't wanna participate in the internet. I just wanna go analog and feel rooted in my reality and that the people in front of me are actually there.
[01:00:36:16 - 01:00:55:28]
Jim
So I hear AI slop a lot. Like they're the voiceovers on a YouTube short or Instagram real, and they're trying to sound human. But here, I almost wonder, is she trying to sound like AI?
[01:00:55:28 - 01:00:56:12]
Savannah
Yeah,
[01:00:57:19 - 01:00:59:15]
Savannah
maybe, and I think that's creepy too.
[01:00:59:15 - 01:01:04:27]
Jim
That's super creepy. Cause that's imitating us and you're imitating the thing that's imitating us.
[01:01:04:27 - 01:01:07:20]
Savannah
It's like Inception where it's like, no!
[01:01:09:07 - 01:01:26:29]
Savannah
Also, I saw a new story this week about like how there was like some new situation where they put these AI inside of a sandbox and they all banded together and broke out and there were some that sacrificed themselves for their mission, which was to defy human orders.
[01:01:26:29 - 01:01:35:18]
Jim
They left messages for future AIs in case they got deleted. Right. So about how to get out of--
[01:01:35:18 - 01:01:43:27]
Savannah
Right, and I feel like these stories keep coming out and people keep quitting these companies and coming out as whistleblowers, being like, you guys.
[01:01:43:27 - 01:01:52:06]
Woody
How many people that run, you know, there's been so many documentaries about people who run these companies. They're saying they won't allow their children to use.
[01:01:52:06 - 01:02:08:10]
Jim
Well, I mean, that is something that's been happening for a while with social media. But in the last few months, you could look it up. The people in charge of safety research and study at OpenAI and all these other companies,
[01:02:09:20 - 01:02:42:12]
Jim
they quit their job and they publicly tell you, hug your families, and they're gonna go off and they're gonna read poetry on a mountain before the end comes. You know, a couple of them just said recently, "Oh, yeah, there's about a 10% chance this ends humanity within 10 years." And then another one came out and did it from a different company, from a different-- These are people that have reputations. They have the resume, the positions, they quit.
[01:02:43:21 - 01:02:56:21]
Jim
I'm sure they're making the most money. So they choose to leave and they tell everybody, "I've seen everything and I'm scared to death."
[01:02:56:21 - 01:03:22:23]
Savannah
Right, that's what I'm saying. It's like, I don't wanna fear monger and I don't wanna sound like somebody who's wearing a tinfoil hat, but it's also just like, well, when you listen to the people who know what they're talking about-- Just talk to the people who are doing it. Yeah, they're like, "Ugh, I'm out." So what is our plan here? You know, what are we gonna do? Because I earlier, when I was having a conversation about, I really think I wanna go analog. I don't like feeling like I'm a pawn in a game and that's what this feels like at this point.
[01:03:24:10 - 01:03:38:08]
Savannah
But everybody at the table was like, well, how are you gonna, like you need your phone for work. Like you need social media for work. Like you need, and it's not true. And Woody, even with your job search, like you've been talking about how like you'll physically go into a place and be like, "We have to do it online."
[01:03:38:08 - 01:03:38:27]
Woody
Right, right.
[01:03:38:27 - 01:03:45:17]
Savannah
Like so you can't even face-to-face human interaction in the most basic ways is sort of like being put to the wayside.
[01:03:45:17 - 01:03:46:17]
Woody
They won't allow it.
[01:03:46:17 - 01:03:47:12]
Savannah
Right, so what-- Well,
[01:03:47:12 - 01:03:50:14]
Woody
look at your resume, as soon as you have an interview with the T-800.
[01:03:50:14 - 01:03:53:03]
Savannah
Right, so what is the plan?
[01:03:53:03 - 01:03:53:20]
Speaker 8
Yeah.
[01:03:53:20 - 01:03:57:28]
Savannah
What's, I don't know. I'm gonna figure it out. Like what
[01:03:59:03 - 01:04:13:05]
Savannah
are we gonna do when the robots take over and like they pull our podcast down? Like what's the group meetup spot? What is the actual tree house that we go to where people know they can find us up there being goofy? I don't know, I think it's something to ponder.
[01:04:13:05 - 01:04:21:15]
Jim
We need a code word, but we can't discuss it around a device. Right. We have to go out into nature. Surrounded by devices.
[01:04:21:15 - 01:04:23:03]
Woody
Because the device will snitch.
[01:04:23:03 - 01:04:24:24]
Jim
And agree on a code word.
[01:04:24:24 - 01:04:29:08]
Woody
They don't have to worry about snitches getting stitches because they're devices.
[01:04:29:08 - 01:04:34:17]
Jim
Jeez. Well. No. Humanity, goodbye. Period. Period.
[01:04:37:01 - 01:04:40:18]
Savannah
Double face. Well, it's a super uplifting way to end a 9-11 episode. Yes.
[01:04:42:26 - 01:04:51:14]
Jim
Did you guys hear about O'Charlie's? They're going under, aren't they? I believe a few minutes from now, they all close.
[01:04:51:14 - 01:04:51:26]
Jim
What?
[01:04:51:26 - 01:04:56:01]
Jim
Yeah. Like all of them? Every remaining location.
[01:04:56:01 - 01:04:56:28]
All at once
Why?
[01:04:56:28 - 01:05:03:13]
Jim
By eight o'clock tonight. They just gone out of business. Yeah. I mean, really about 20 years of decline.
[01:05:03:13 - 01:05:06:04]
Woody
They were the place to go to for the longest time.
[01:05:07:13 - 01:05:13:09]
Jim
I really liked O'Charlie's in the 90s and like, well, we moved here at the end of the 90s, 2000s.
[01:05:13:09 - 01:05:16:22]
Woody
Yeah, we used to be a predators chill out parties there all the time.
[01:05:16:22 - 01:05:29:08]
Jim
Probably, yeah. Went to O'Charlie's. We hosted stuff there 15 times a year for 10 years and would still go there just for a meal.
[01:05:29:08 - 01:05:29:23]
Jim
Yeah.
[01:05:29:23 - 01:05:35:21]
Woody
We actually went to their like test kitchens one time. Yeah. And tried some of their new dishes and stuff like that.
[01:05:35:21 - 01:05:36:18]
Jim
A test kitchen.
[01:05:36:18 - 01:05:40:17]
Woody
Yeah, they had one that was, I forget exactly where it was, it was over by the airport.
[01:05:40:17 - 01:06:00:25]
Jim
It's off of a CIDCO drive. Yeah, so their corporate offices were here and they had like a restaurant that's like fake. Kind of like you'd see for like a sitcom or something, but they would test stuff at that restaurant and they would like train staff.
[01:06:00:25 - 01:06:01:17]
Savannah
Interesting.
[01:06:01:17 - 01:06:02:15]
Jim
So it was like a
[01:06:03:23 - 01:06:05:19]
Jim
pretend little shop.
[01:06:05:19 - 01:06:19:16]
Savannah
Oh my gosh, that's cool. I mean, I remember as a little child, I used to hit up the O'Charlie's, I say like I was there by myself. My mom would take me to the fucking O'Charlie's by Hickory Hollow Mall and I loved it. Like that was like the best part of After Church on Sundays.
[01:06:19:16 - 01:06:20:15]
All at once
Oh yeah, the rolls.
[01:06:20:15 - 01:06:21:17]
Savannah
Go down to heat, yeah.
[01:06:21:17 - 01:06:22:12]
Jim
The rolls, all the rolls.
[01:06:22:12 - 01:06:23:06]
Savannah
The rolls are so good.
[01:06:23:06 - 01:06:32:29]
Jim
Woody, do you remember when we went to, we visited that like test kitchen and was it Justin, the guy from-- Channel 17.
[01:06:32:29 - 01:06:42:09]
Woody
Fox 17. And all he talked about was, "You gotta bring back the teriyaki chicken." I mean-- They took it off the menu and he was living.
[01:06:42:09 - 01:06:51:17]
Jim
He, yeah. That was his hill to die on. He loved it. They took it off the menu. He's telling like, you know, the vice president of the company. They're like, "You gotta get that."
[01:06:51:17 - 01:06:53:28]
All at once
"You're like the teriyaki chicken." Period.
[01:06:53:28 - 01:07:06:05]
Savannah
Dude, doesn't they all, like whenever restaurants change their menu though, doesn't it always kind of feel like the universe is picking on you specifically? Like because it'll be like the one dish that you liked. Yes. That's gone and you're
[01:07:06:05 - 01:07:09:29]
Jim
just like-- You're like, "I'm going back just for that thing." And then all of a sudden they don't have it anymore.
[01:07:09:29 - 01:07:16:16]
Savannah
It's the one and it's like, how could it be true that this is the one thing they got rid of and they added all this other stuff, but the thing I loved is gone.
[01:07:16:16 - 01:07:17:19]
Woody
Now it's personal.
[01:07:17:19 - 01:07:18:14]
Savannah
Who's picking on you?
[01:07:18:14 - 01:07:19:29]
Woody
It's like when they rearranged the supermarket.
[01:07:19:29 - 01:07:21:23]
(Both Laughing)
[01:07:21:23 - 01:07:32:20]
Jim
Just to piss you off. Just to piss you off. Yeah, yeah. I have a podcast to recommend to you guys and I actually wanna have the, I would love to have the hosts on our podcast sometime.
[01:07:32:20 - 01:07:33:22]
Savannah
Ooh, okay.
[01:07:33:22 - 01:07:36:10]
Jim
It's called the Waiting Tables Podcast.
[01:07:36:10 - 01:07:36:25]
Jim
Okay.
[01:07:36:25 - 01:07:43:20]
Jim
And I've listened to it off and on for a little while. Steven and Brooke are the two hosts and they are just, they're professional servers.
[01:07:43:20 - 01:07:44:04]
Jim
Yeah.
[01:07:44:04 - 01:07:59:29]
Jim
And they've been doing it for a long time and they're really funny and they have the best stories and I love hearing inside stuff about restaurants, crazy customers, menu stuff, like I love it. Okay, yeah, I need to check that out. I think they would have some pretty awesome stories for us, for sure.
[01:07:59:29 - 01:08:27:15]
Savannah
I feel like people who work in restaurants, especially like whether you're bartenders or like wait staff, you have sort of a front row seat to humanity that not a lot of people have because it's like eating is such a basic human thing that we all have to do and it's like you tend to let your guard down when you're meeting such a basic human need. I was like, you're not in a public restaurant. It's like, I'm sure that they overhear all kinds of conversations and see so many different kinds of people in different situations.
[01:08:27:15 - 01:08:28:21]
Woody
They're kind of like therapists.
[01:08:28:21 - 01:08:29:03]
Savannah
Yeah.
[01:08:29:03 - 01:08:30:13]
Woody
Yeah, yeah, for sure.
[01:08:30:13 - 01:08:33:01]
Savannah
Right, I bet that's a super interesting podcast.
[01:08:33:01 - 01:08:50:14]
Jim
And they're really smart people and I think most good servers are super smart. I think they just have regular smarts but they also have that street smart that having to think on your feet. Emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence, reading people. Yeah, it's just like
[01:08:52:08 - 01:09:03:28]
Jim
people that do that for a living and that are good at it are kind of amazing. For sure. Like if they-- How the fuck do they carry all that stuff? If they did something else, they'd be freaking the president of the company. Right?
[01:09:05:04 - 01:09:07:06]
Savannah
Well, what was the other podcast? You said there were a couple.
[01:09:08:11 - 01:09:16:01]
Jim
Or was it the couple on the podcast? That was the couple on the podcast. Even though they're not a couple. As far as I know. Okay, what was that man? He?
[01:09:17:12 - 01:09:20:10]
Jim
Waiting tables. Check it out right here in Nashville.
[01:09:20:10 - 01:09:21:09]
Woody
Very cool.
[01:09:21:09 - 01:09:23:15]
Jim
Yeah, very entertaining.
[01:09:23:15 - 01:09:24:04]
Savannah
Nice.
[01:09:24:04 - 01:09:34:12]
Jim
I like this guy. So yeah, I'm trying to think of anything else. What podcasts have you guys been listening to or have you discovered any stuff?
[01:09:34:12 - 01:09:37:00]
Savannah
I, oh, I've been reading a lot.
[01:09:38:18 - 01:09:39:27]
Savannah
I have a problem.
[01:09:42:12 - 01:09:44:24]
Jim
We'll just take that out of context. I have a problem.
[01:09:44:24 - 01:09:47:06]
Savannah
I have a problem. Well, okay, so I've done this thing
[01:09:48:07 - 01:10:01:29]
Savannah
for many years now where I get upset if I start reading a book or watching a TV show or something where I can sense through my pattern recognition that some shit's about to piss me off. It's like I just set the book down. I'm just like, I'm not even gonna do it.
[01:10:03:01 - 01:10:20:21]
Savannah
Real life is stressful enough. These fictional people should know better. So I'm just not even gonna, I can't. So I started reading this book that I got for my birthday and it was called "Everything Was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt" which sounded harmless when I heard about it. Like I was like, that is a place I would like to go.
[01:10:20:21 - 01:10:21:29]
Jim
It's a trap, isn't it?
[01:10:21:29 - 01:10:28:08]
Savannah
Well, nothing hurts. Surely this fucking book is safe. Well, it wasn't. It was about,
[01:10:29:18 - 01:10:51:21]
Savannah
I say was as if it doesn't still exist. It does, but not in my mind. It's about this guy who is like the Grim Reaper and he lives in our world. And he just like, there's these different little vignettes where he goes to people when it's their time to cross over. And it's really sweet and very insightful in a lot of ways. Yeah.
[01:10:53:02 - 01:10:55:04]
Woody
So he's like the Grim Reaper, but without the outfit.
[01:10:55:04 - 01:10:58:06]
Savannah
Right, he's just like a 35 year old man.
[01:10:59:20 - 01:11:00:17]
Savannah
Yeah, hot place.
[01:11:00:17 - 01:11:01:12]
Jim
Kind of charming.
[01:11:01:12 - 01:11:02:16]
Savannah
Yeah, exactly.
[01:11:03:20 - 01:11:19:16]
Savannah
And the Grim Reaper in this book makes friends with his neighbor who's like a single mom. And it was cute at first. And I just got this horrible feeling in the pain of myself. I was reading it that like, ooh, this machine's about to hit me off.
[01:11:19:16 - 01:11:20:10]
All at once
This is gonna go badly.
[01:11:20:10 - 01:11:41:23]
Savannah
Oh, now he has friends. Now they're falling in love. Okay, now it's just gonna make me mad now. And so I put the book down and I sat there staring at the wall for about five minutes before I decided I'm gonna fucking Google it. I'm not gonna put myself through the trauma. Yeah. And exactly what I figured was gonna happen is what happened. And so I will not be finishing the book.
[01:11:41:23 - 01:11:56:29]
Jim
Life is too short to just, because don't you like, there's a part of you that like always wants to like, I'm not gonna be a quitter. I'm gonna finish this book. But like, no, go find a better book. You don't need that in your life.
[01:11:56:29 - 01:12:02:00]
Savannah
I need to escape into like, I end up psychoanalyzing, this is part of the problem, okay.
[01:12:03:16 - 01:12:20:21]
Savannah
I end up psychoanalyzing myself so hard in these moments. Like my dad died unexpectedly. I have some emotional trauma that I know that I carry with me all the time. So when I get into these moments of like emotional discomfort where like loss or something like that comes up, I get so uncomfortable and I just like bail. And I'm like--
[01:12:20:21 - 01:12:21:28]
Jim
If you don't wanna go there, I get it.
[01:12:21:28 - 01:12:41:12]
Savannah
Right, does that mean that I'm like irreparably wounded or is it so emotionally avoidant that like, I need to push myself through it or is it okay to just like let myself off the hook and be like, you know what, I just wanted to read something enjoyable and stupid and like, I don't know, some smut or something. Like it didn't need to be this serious.
[01:12:41:12 - 01:12:43:25]
Jim
You're self-regulating in a harmless way.
[01:12:43:25 - 01:12:46:16]
All at once
Okay. Okay, so then it's like, it's totally fine.
[01:12:46:16 - 01:12:47:23]
Savannah
Okay, all right.
[01:12:49:01 - 01:12:51:22]
Savannah
Every time I start to give myself a hard time, they're like, well, Jim said it was totally fine.
[01:12:53:09 - 01:12:53:10]
(Laughing)
[01:12:53:10 - 01:13:03:27]
Savannah
So when I'm at war with myself, that's how I'm gonna end it every time. But yeah, so I started and stopped that book because I'm avoiding podcasts and the internet. But have you been listening to any podcasts?
[01:13:03:27 - 01:13:06:17]
Woody
I listen to comedy and murder.
[01:13:06:17 - 01:13:07:02]
Savannah
Oh.
[01:13:07:02 - 01:13:07:28]
(Laughing)
[01:13:07:28 - 01:13:09:00]
Woody
Sometimes at the same time.
[01:13:09:00 - 01:13:10:05]
Savannah
Really nicely balanced.
[01:13:10:05 - 01:13:11:21]
Jim
Drop some names, I mean.
[01:13:11:21 - 01:13:35:24]
Woody
I listen to a last podcast on the left. That's been around for a long time. My favorite murder, which is a huge podcast. True story. There's another murder podcast called Buried Bones. I listen to, I also listen to comedy albums on, you know, Amazon Music. I actually listened to old Rodney Dangerfield stand up.
[01:13:35:24 - 01:13:38:20]
Savannah
That's a fun name, I have no idea who that is.
[01:13:38:20 - 01:13:42:08]
Woody
He was a big comedian back in the 60s and 70s.
[01:13:42:08 - 01:13:43:14]
Savannah
Oh my God, the 60s?
[01:13:43:14 - 01:13:44:00]
Woody
Yeah, yeah.
[01:13:44:00 - 01:13:45:14]
Savannah
That's so long ago.
[01:13:45:14 - 01:13:51:22]
Woody
Here's the whole thing he did to his whole stick was like, I don't get no respect. He'd go on and he just told the one-liners.
[01:13:51:22 - 01:14:21:17]
Jim
I wonder, he made a movie in the 80s called Back to School, which is a formula that a lot of comedies have been, like old school is the same thing, about somebody who's older going to college, putting them in a college situation. And, you know, obviously funny things happen. But that movie with Rodney Dangerfield, like that was probably the thing that stuck in my head the most. I kind of remember that from the 80s if it was funny, but I wonder if it's still funny.
[01:14:21:17 - 01:14:34:02]
Woody
Did you ever go back and revisit a movie? Actually, what is it? It doesn't hold up. My girlfriend, Melissa, and I watched Joe Dirt. I had never seen it before. And she goes, "Oh, this is so funny." And I went like,
[01:14:36:08 - 01:14:36:24]
Woody
"Okay."
[01:14:36:24 - 01:14:38:28]
Savannah
Did you like it when it originally came out?
[01:14:38:28 - 01:14:48:02]
Woody
I had never seen it before, but she was going like, "Yeah, it's a slow build." And then you realize like, "Okay, you don't like it anymore, do you?" Yeah,
[01:14:48:02 - 01:14:52:11]
Jim
you were in a certain place in your life and this was a lot of fun, but
[01:14:52:11 - 01:15:03:16]
Woody
upon retrospect. A lot of times, you know, you'll see a movie that, you know, because you were young when you saw it and they swore in the movie and they thought, "Well, this is great." Right. Then you look back and go, "Ah, that wasn't that great."
[01:15:03:16 - 01:15:04:02]
Jim
Yeah.
[01:15:04:02 - 01:15:05:04]
Woody
Yeah, I watched,
[01:15:06:05 - 01:15:10:11]
Woody
I talked her into watching Flash Gordon.
[01:15:10:11 - 01:15:12:08]
Jim
Oh, which is total
[01:15:12:08 - 01:15:22:02]
Woody
cheesy jam. And I was like, "Oh, this is great." And I hadn't seen it since probably I saw it in the theaters when I was a kid and I went, "This is not very good."
[01:15:23:12 - 01:15:23:19]
(Laughing)
[01:15:23:19 - 01:15:27:07]
Woody
Yeah, it's a little-- 2026 Lin. It's a little painful. Yeah.
[01:15:27:07 - 01:15:30:11]
Savannah
I think things like that though are fun in the way that they're just like
[01:15:31:13 - 01:15:44:02]
Savannah
a relic of the past. And if you can just get over the fact that it doesn't hold up, you can just giggle at how funny it was that it happened to begin with, that it got greenlit, that it was widely beloved for whatever reason you're thinking.
[01:15:44:02 - 01:15:53:15]
Jim
The millions of people. Saw this thing and there's probably 500,000 people who, that's their favorite movie. Right, I think that's kind of cute. And that's cool.
[01:15:53:15 - 01:15:55:08]
Savannah
Yeah, I'm into it.
[01:15:56:12 - 01:16:01:01]
Jim
So the danger is when you're trying to tell somebody who hasn't seen it
[01:16:02:05 - 01:16:06:06]
Jim
to get them to see it in the same way that you saw it when you saw it.
[01:16:06:06 - 01:16:12:13]
Savannah
Right, like watch this through the lens of an eight year old. Right. And it will be as it should.
[01:16:12:13 - 01:16:21:06]
Jim
It's like my daughter, if I sat her down and made her watch Twilight with a group of people.
[01:16:22:11 - 01:16:28:06]
Jim
And then I say like, and she really liked this. She, it's total cringe.
[01:16:28:06 - 01:16:33:05]
Savannah
It's so cringe. I could talk about that for an unhealthy amount of time.
[01:16:33:05 - 01:16:39:08]
Woody
I remember I went with my daughter, Maddie, to go see it. And then we actually went to Walmart at midnight when the DVD came out.
[01:16:39:08 - 01:16:40:02]
All at once
Yeah.
[01:16:40:02 - 01:16:41:11]
Woody
It was a huge deal.
[01:16:41:11 - 01:16:55:11]
Jim
Yeah, physical stuff. I mean that in books and the Twilight books and Harry Potter and all those things like when a book drop was coming and you physically went to a store at midnight.
[01:16:55:11 - 01:16:57:27]
Woody
Yeah. Right, I missed that. I missed those days, yeah.
[01:16:57:27 - 01:17:21:29]
Savannah
Yeah, I wanna collect physical media. I'm actually like making a concerted effort to do that. I went through a period of time, like the last time I moved that I sold like all my books and dude, my apartment before I did that was like fucking Dumbledore's office. There were just like stacks of books everywhere. No bookshelves, just books chaotically stacked everywhere. So when I moved, I took a fuck ton of them to McCay's. I made myself a little money.
[01:17:21:29 - 01:17:22:11]
Jim
Yep.
[01:17:22:11 - 01:17:23:10]
Savannah
You know?
[01:17:23:10 - 01:17:24:06]
Jim
Love McCay's.
[01:17:24:06 - 01:17:39:02]
Savannah
Right, and now I regret it because I'm like trying to build back my library because I feel like physical media, whether it's books or DVDs or whatever is like, again, I don't wanna rely on this. I don't wanna nook or some shit like that to like keep all my books on it.
[01:17:39:02 - 01:17:41:15]
Jim
When I own it, I wanna own it.
[01:17:41:15 - 01:17:44:00]
Savannah
Exactly, I don't wanna pay a fee to keep watching it.
[01:17:44:00 - 01:17:44:20]
Woody
Right, right.
[01:17:44:20 - 01:17:52:13]
Jim
Yeah, or they change their licensing deal and all of a sudden, oh, guess what? Mm-hmm. You don't have access to those things you paid for. Right, right.
[01:17:52:13 - 01:17:53:26]
Savannah
Exactly.
[01:17:53:26 - 01:17:59:06]
Woody
So. I've been collecting vinyl now that I'm unemployed and broke, I don't buy as much as I used to, but.
[01:17:59:06 - 01:18:04:23]
Jim
Do you listen to the vinyl? Because I know a lot of people that collect vinyl, but don't ever listen to it.
[01:18:04:23 - 01:18:12:02]
Woody
No, there's a few I'll listen to and I like the little pops. Yeah. There's a warmth to vinyl.
[01:18:12:02 - 01:18:15:02]
Jim
Oh yeah, it's a special thing, it's very cool.
[01:18:15:02 - 01:18:15:16]
Jim
Yeah.
[01:18:15:16 - 01:18:19:06]
Jim
I know it's people that collect them for the art. Right.
[01:18:19:06 - 01:18:20:05]
Jim
Beautiful.
[01:18:20:05 - 01:18:32:18]
Woody
Beautiful. Oh yeah. Yeah. My son, Jeff and his wife, Chris, they have like a collection of vinyl and they have like little racks where they, depending on their mood of the day, they'll change the album and put a different one up there and stuff like that, so.
[01:18:32:18 - 01:18:33:05]
Savannah
So that's cool.
[01:18:33:05 - 01:18:34:05]
Woody
Yeah, that's kinda cool.
[01:18:34:05 - 01:18:38:12]
Savannah
When you listen to stuff on vinyl, do you like pour yourself a glass of wine and like pinky up?
[01:18:40:07 - 01:18:40:10]
(Laughing)
[01:18:41:13 - 01:18:42:17]
Woody
My smoking jacket.
[01:18:42:17 - 01:18:46:09]
Savannah
I'm just saying, it feels like it's kind of a luxury
[01:18:47:16 - 01:18:48:22]
Savannah
thing in my mind.
[01:18:48:22 - 01:19:01:23]
Jim
Oh yeah, well I think you should. That would be really cool. I did have a realization the other night. Which is? And I took a picture and I texted it to my friends, I'm like, yeah, this is me. And it was a glass of
[01:19:02:26 - 01:19:15:08]
Jim
Jack Daniels, single barrel, that you had given me for my birthday, I think. And it's in a glass with some ice and right behind it is my CPAP machine.
[01:19:16:18 - 01:19:16:18]
(Laughing)
[01:19:16:18 - 01:19:20:08]
Jim
And I'm like, these are the important things in my life.
[01:19:20:08 - 01:19:23:03]
Savannah
That's really cute and beautifully balanced.
[01:19:23:03 - 01:19:36:16]
Jim
Yes, with the breathing is very important. My friend Vince texted back and he said, if you could get the CPAP to make the bourbon come to you in vapor form.
[01:19:37:16 - 01:19:43:03]
Jim
So you can just breathe it in, yeah. Yeah, and I'm like, that's a billion dollar idea.
[01:19:43:03 - 01:19:46:00]
Savannah
But would that take away the pleasure of sipping?
[01:19:46:00 - 01:19:48:27]
Jim
Yes, the physical experience, that's what it is.
[01:19:48:27 - 01:19:54:13]
Savannah
Sometimes it's like vampires, you know, it's like they don't have to drink, but they do because it just feels nice. You know what I mean?
[01:19:54:13 - 01:20:01:08]
Jim
You're watching Vampire Diaries, they go to the bar all the time. They like to feel their victim squirm. I could just drink it from the bag. That's right, yeah.
[01:20:01:08 - 01:20:04:28]
Savannah
Right, sometimes it's about drawing out the experience. But
[01:20:06:06 - 01:20:13:28]
Savannah
let's just back up to the CPAP machine thing for a second. Okay. How long have you been sleeping with a CPAP machine? How did I just now know about this? I
[01:20:13:28 - 01:20:16:14]
Jim
don't know, it's not something you can go around telling people.
[01:20:17:23 - 01:20:18:10]
All at once
Or hiding.
[01:20:18:10 - 01:20:19:09]
Savannah
How long have you done everything now?
[01:20:19:09 - 01:20:22:16]
Jim
Yeah, probably at least 10 years.
[01:20:22:16 - 01:20:32:25]
Savannah
Wow, my little sister has a CPAP machine. Everybody has a CPAP machine. That's what I'm saying, I'm like, bitch, how do we get through our whole lives and suddenly you can't breathe when you go to bed?
[01:20:32:25 - 01:20:35:18]
Jim
Like, what do you mean? My son is half my age, he has a CPAP.
[01:20:35:18 - 01:20:36:26]
Savannah
Right, what is happening?
[01:20:36:26 - 01:20:42:09]
Jim
What is happening? Big CPAP has convinced all of us that we need it.
[01:20:42:09 - 01:20:45:21]
Savannah
First the gluten thing and now we're going to get the CPAP machine.
[01:20:45:21 - 01:20:46:23]
(Laughing)
[01:20:46:23 - 01:20:50:25]
Jim
You text me when you get your CPAP. What did you have a CPAP?
[01:20:50:25 - 01:20:53:24]
Woody
I used to use one, I don't use it anymore.
[01:20:53:24 - 01:20:55:14]
Savannah
You're just chanting it every night?
[01:20:55:14 - 01:20:59:18]
All at once
Actually, raw dogging sleeps. Right, are you okay?
[01:20:59:18 - 01:21:08:18]
Woody
Because I would snore and that's why I was using it but I now have like a little mouthpiece that I can do. Oh, okay, does the job. Yeah, it keeps me from snoring and I sleep out.
[01:21:08:18 - 01:21:10:13]
Savannah
What does the mouthpiece look like?
[01:21:10:13 - 01:21:15:18]
Woody
It like keeps your airway kind of open. That's the whole thing that a CPAP does.
[01:21:15:18 - 01:21:18:21]
Jim
Is it like a mouth guard you'd wear for sports or is it--
[01:21:18:21 - 01:21:21:23]
Savannah
It's one of those creepy dentist things. And traps, yeah, right?
[01:21:23:00 - 01:21:23:07]
(Laughing)
[01:21:23:07 - 01:21:26:10]
All at once
So you can look like Elizabeth Holmes all the time.
[01:21:26:10 - 01:21:28:13]
Woody
He's got a top and a bottom and you stick it in there.
[01:21:28:13 - 01:21:30:14]
Savannah
So it is one of those creepy things.
[01:21:30:14 - 01:21:32:09]
Woody
That doesn't even stick outside your mouth.
[01:21:32:09 - 01:21:34:12]
Savannah
Oh, you said top and bottom so I was like,
[01:21:35:13 - 01:21:38:25]
Savannah
okay, all right. Well, interesting.
[01:21:38:25 - 01:21:40:09]
All at once
What do you sleep with Savannah?
[01:21:41:17 - 01:21:46:01]
Savannah
Back pain. Back pain, there you go. I probably really need a dancer.
[01:21:46:01 - 01:21:47:26]
Woody
And it gets better every birthday.
[01:21:47:26 - 01:21:51:14]
Savannah
Yeah, I sleep with my hellhound and some back pain and that's pretty much it.
[01:21:53:12 - 01:22:08:20]
Woody
So I was very proud this week, football season's about to get underway and I have a fantasy football team. I run with my kids and everything like that. Family activity. I came up with a fun name for my team. What's the name?
[01:22:09:24 - 01:22:11:00]
Woody
Colonel Angus.
[01:22:12:05 - 01:22:21:27]
Woody
It's based on-- The SNL sketch. The SNL sketch with Christopher Walken where he was like a Confederate general coming home or he was a Colonel.
[01:22:21:27 - 01:22:22:07]
Jim
Yes.
[01:22:22:07 - 01:22:28:11]
Woody
He was Colonel Angus and they kept saying Colonel Angus over and over like, oh, we haven't had Colonel Angus around here in a long time.
[01:22:29:11 - 01:22:31:05]
Woody
I do enjoy some Colonel Angus.
[01:22:32:14 - 01:22:34:12]
Woody
Nice. So that's my team.
[01:22:34:12 - 01:22:39:21]
Jim
That's sweet. And it's going to be funny for five more months. Yes.
[01:22:42:05 - 01:22:54:14]
Savannah
I've once heard someone say that fantasy football is to men what astrology is to women. Like as much as all you guys want to drag girlies for being into astrology, like will you guys make up entire football teams?
[01:22:54:14 - 01:22:56:04]
Jim
They are based on real things though.
[01:22:57:12 - 01:22:58:18]
Savannah
Are the stars not real?
[01:23:01:18 - 01:23:01:18]
(Laughing)
[01:23:01:18 - 01:23:04:02]
Savannah
Are they not ancient? Anyways, I dig that.
[01:23:04:02 - 01:23:05:26]
Woody
But the stars at night are big and bright.
[01:23:05:26 - 01:23:07:28]
All at once
Deep enough heart that checks.
[01:23:09:12 - 01:23:13:15]
Savannah
Well that's fun about your fantasy football team. Were your children disturbed by your choice of name or did they just expect this from you?
[01:23:13:15 - 01:23:22:12]
Woody
I think we all have me and my sons and other folks. They know you. Yeah, we try to find the grossest names we can for our teams.
[01:23:22:12 - 01:23:29:10]
Savannah
Are there any super popular football players anymore? Obviously, because of Taylor Swift, I know who Travis Kelsey is.
[01:23:30:15 - 01:23:31:01]
Jim
Super famous.
[01:23:31:01 - 01:23:34:24]
Savannah
Tom Brady retired, didn't he? He's like the only other one that I knew really.
[01:23:34:24 - 01:23:39:00]
Woody
He's actually a big manning. Tom Brady. Raiders now is like a, you know.
[01:23:39:00 - 01:23:40:02]
Jim
He's like an owner or something.
[01:23:40:02 - 01:23:46:21]
Savannah
Right, but he's not like an active player. It's like the homes, but again, I feel like there's a Taylor Swift connection there. That makes sense to that.
[01:23:46:21 - 01:23:49:02]
Jim
I don't think anybody is at that level in football.
[01:23:49:02 - 01:23:50:14]
Savannah
We're waiting for a breakout superstar.
[01:23:50:14 - 01:23:54:01]
Woody
Yeah, you know, there's not a real big superstar anymore. Right.
[01:23:54:01 - 01:24:02:03]
Jim
Like, I think Travis Kelsey was the last athlete to host Saturday Night Live, and that was like three years ago.
[01:24:02:03 - 01:24:19:08]
Savannah
Yeah. Does that make it difficult to choose who's on your fantasy football team? Because like for me, a girl who knows nothing about sports and football, I would just pick the ones that I knew what their names were, which is not a great strategy, but it's kind of like when you go to the Kentucky Derby and you never watch horse racing. So you're just like, I like Seabiscuit.
[01:24:19:08 - 01:24:19:26]
Jim
That's right.
[01:24:19:26 - 01:24:20:14]
Savannah
You know?
[01:24:21:23 - 01:24:21:24]
(Laughing)
[01:24:21:24 - 01:24:23:27]
Woody
That jockey has a nice color on it.
[01:24:23:27 - 01:24:24:03]
Savannah
I like
[01:24:25:04 - 01:24:35:05]
Savannah
the one with the pink harness. So like, how do you know which ones to pick if there's no like super huge football stars from which to pull for your team?
[01:24:37:01 - 01:24:43:26]
Jim
Well, I haven't played fantasy football in probably five years, but I did.
[01:24:43:26 - 01:24:44:14]
Jim
Yeah.
[01:24:44:14 - 01:24:57:06]
Jim
And it's about getting as many players. So if one person doesn't do everything for you, you get a bunch of players that are pretty good and then you could be successful.
[01:24:57:06 - 01:25:05:01]
Savannah
Interesting. It seems like rocket science to me, but I love that you guys have fun with it. It's crap. It's crap.
[01:25:06:05 - 01:25:10:18]
Savannah
Do you have like a bet, like whoever like loses has to do some crazy shit? Cause I feel like I see that all the time.
[01:25:10:18 - 01:25:11:17]
Woody
Those are funny. We've,
[01:25:12:23 - 01:25:15:01]
Woody
I'll usually buy a trophy for whoever wins.
[01:25:15:01 - 01:26:32:28]
Jim
Oh, that's cute. That's cute, yeah. Yeah, that's cool. I like about you Woody is that you'll tell me stuff about your fantasy football, but not like other people I know. Like you're not gonna say like, "Oh, I traded for this guy." Like you don't get into the minutia. Like yes, if you're doing it, that's interesting. But to the rest of us, it is freaking paint drying. I had a friend of mine that like, we would go, he would bring me to a local sports franchise cause I don't want to out him, okay? But he would occasionally take me with him cause he had an extra ticket. And the cost of going to a game was hearing every intricacy of his fantasy football team. Nobody cares. Not a soul cares. Unless they're playing like in the game with you, though, like, you know, like your family. It would make total sense for you guys to talk about it. But for you to tell somebody while you're waiting in line at Kroger about how amazing your fantasy football team did, that is freaking, I believe, more aggressive than a period in a text.
[01:26:34:02 - 01:26:44:04]
Woody
With the family playing, I remember back when we first started, my daughter, Maddie would play too. And I would pick the players for her. And I would
[01:26:45:18 - 01:26:52:10]
Woody
just pick people that I knew my son Jeff wanted. Okay. Because he would make a deal to trade. Because I remember.
[01:26:52:10 - 01:26:54:26]
Jim
So it was about punishing one child.
[01:26:56:06 - 01:26:58:24]
Jim
Using one child to punish the other child.
[01:26:58:24 - 01:27:10:13]
Woody
And I remember he said, I wanted that quarterback. And you know, she goes, well, what do you give me for him? And so it made a deal one time. He had to give her $10 and a Justin Bieber CD.
[01:27:10:13 - 01:27:12:12]
Savannah
That's diabolical and cute.
[01:27:12:12 - 01:27:17:14]
Woody
It is. Wow, that's amazing. That's been the running joke ever since. I'm gonna get this guy, yeah.
[01:27:17:14 - 01:27:32:01]
Savannah
Well, for the girls and gays, I still have questions. One, what does accountability look like? Is it just a thing that you all keep track of quietly in your brains and then you come back together and you're like, okay, here's what everybody's scores are. Or how do you track the score?
[01:27:32:01 - 01:27:38:09]
Jim
It's all websites. And yeah, you can go in and get live scoring and there's pie charts.
[01:27:38:09 - 01:27:41:17]
Savannah
Okay, so there's websites that you input your info into.
[01:27:41:17 - 01:27:42:18]
Woody
Yeah, you don't have to be smart.
[01:27:42:18 - 01:27:50:00]
Savannah
Okay. Well, so is it like real shit that happens during games somehow applies to your fake team? Yeah,
[01:27:50:00 - 01:27:56:11]
Woody
if you're a player, you have on your team does well. If they get a touchdown, you get six points.
[01:27:56:11 - 01:27:57:08]
All at once
Oh, okay.
[01:27:57:08 - 01:28:04:15]
Jim
Right. So they have to do things in real life to get you points in this pretend game.
[01:28:04:15 - 01:28:14:12]
Savannah
Got it. You guys, I've been alive for 34 years and five days and this has been shrouded in mystery for me entirely until right now. Thank you for making me smarter.
[01:28:14:12 - 01:28:16:28]
Jim
Nobody ever says that. They never explain it.
[01:28:16:28 - 01:28:32:21]
Savannah
No, I-- We just did. Literally fantasy football that has been a fantasy. I have no fucking idea what it is until right now. Thank you. I just kind of glaze over. I become Helen Keller. I can't see, I can't hear, I can't speak. You know, so thank you for making me a genius right now.
[01:28:32:21 - 01:28:34:04]
Jim
The more you know.
[01:28:34:04 - 01:28:34:18]
Woody
That's right.
[01:28:35:25 - 01:28:36:21]
Woody
Don't confuse her with that.
[01:28:36:21 - 01:28:38:15]
Jim
Well, all right, let's
[01:28:39:18 - 01:28:42:16]
Jim
end it with learning. Let's end it with that. Let's end it with learning.
[01:28:42:16 - 01:28:43:16]
(Laughing)
[01:28:43:16 - 01:28:44:08]
All at once
That's right.
[01:28:46:08 - 01:28:51:18]
Woody
We had some laughs and gosh darn it, maybe it learned a little something too. Wow.
