<v Speaker 1>Wednesday, September 30th, 2026. You are listening to the Daily
<v Speaker 1>Dose Sports Podcast, and I am your host, Clint Daly,
<v Speaker 1>coming to you from the Mile High City here in Denver, Colorado,
<v Speaker 1>and we are back for another week of talking sports
<v Speaker 1>with a dose of common sense. Hey, happy Wednesday to you. Yes,
<v Speaker 1>I did just say September 30th. How is September already over?
<v Speaker 1>We are on to October already? That is absolutely insane.
<v Speaker 1>I hope your week is going well. You are halfway
<v Speaker 1>to another weekend now. And I hope you and your
<v Speaker 1>family and your friends and everyone in your world is
<v Speaker 1>staying strong and healthy right now. And speaking of October, yeah,
<v Speaker 1>those Major League Baseball playoffs got started this week. And
<v Speaker 1>you know I'm not a big baseball guy, but I
<v Speaker 1>have told you before, I will watch some baseball playoffs.
<v Speaker 1>Not only will I watch baseball playoffs, But keep one
<v Speaker 1>thing in mind, because I don't have a dog in
<v Speaker 1>the hunt, usually when I make some picks in Major
<v Speaker 1>League Baseball, I do pretty well because I can be
<v Speaker 1>completely objective in the whole thing. Because needless to say,
<v Speaker 1>I don't have a team. in it. Let's jump in
<v Speaker 1>to those wild card best of three matchups. Remember, these
<v Speaker 1>are best of three. We don't have that one game
<v Speaker 1>wild card anymore. In the American League, right off the bat,
<v Speaker 1>we get a bitter rivalry as the number four seeded
<v Speaker 1>New York Yankees are facing the number five seeded Boston
<v Speaker 1>Red Sox. Hey, these are two primarily young teams. Now,
<v Speaker 1>the Yankees have a lot of pitching talent in that rotation,
<v Speaker 1>but but it doesn't sound like Aaron Judge is going
<v Speaker 1>to be available for this series. John Carlos Stanton will
<v Speaker 1>be available, but at what level? That concerns me. Meanwhile,
<v Speaker 1>after starting the season horrible, the Red Sox are suddenly
<v Speaker 1>red hot. The Red Sox also have left-handed pitching, and
<v Speaker 1>that could be a big problem for the Yankees. I'm
<v Speaker 1>actually going to take the Red Sox to advance, and
<v Speaker 1>they would face the Tampa Bay Rays in the divisional round.
<v Speaker 1>In the other matchup in the American League, we get
<v Speaker 1>the number three Houston Astros facing the number six Chicago
<v Speaker 1>White Sox. Hey, remember, the White Sox are a year
<v Speaker 1>removed from losing 100 games, and the White Sox are really,
<v Speaker 1>really young. So we don't know what they're going to
<v Speaker 1>do in this spotlight. They may not even let the
<v Speaker 1>pressure bother them, or they may completely melt down. We're
<v Speaker 1>not really sure. Meanwhile, the Astros are more seasoned, but
<v Speaker 1>they also kind of backed into the playoff playing in
<v Speaker 1>that garbage AL West. But remember this, the regular season
<v Speaker 1>doesn't matter anymore. It's going to make me physically ill,
<v Speaker 1>but I think I'm going to take the Astros to
<v Speaker 1>produce in the clutch and advance. where they would play
<v Speaker 1>the Cleveland Guardians in the ALDS. Let's move over to
<v Speaker 1>that National League. And first up, we have a series
<v Speaker 1>that I'll be honest, I am most interested to watch
<v Speaker 1>as the number four San Diego Padres are facing the
<v Speaker 1>number five Chicago Cubs. Hey, the Padres have a big bankroll.
<v Speaker 1>They've got big stars. They've got Manny Machado. They've got
<v Speaker 1>Fernando Tatis. The Padres have a solid starting rotation. The
<v Speaker 1>Cubs have a number of starters too. They've got MVP
<v Speaker 1>Pete Crow Armstrong and Alex Bregman. The Cubs also have
<v Speaker 1>a solid bullpen. This is going to be a really
<v Speaker 1>fun series. I'm actually going to take the bullpen over
<v Speaker 1>the starters. Give me the Cubs to move on where
<v Speaker 1>they would face the number one Milwaukee Brewers. And then
<v Speaker 1>we have the number three Atlanta Braves facing the number
<v Speaker 1>six Philadelphia Phillies. Hey, the Phillies are spending huge money.
<v Speaker 1>They have a ton of experience. They have a ton
<v Speaker 1>of talent. And they also barely scraped their way into
<v Speaker 1>the playoffs. But I mean, the Braves have also been
<v Speaker 1>very inconsistent. If they're going to advance, I think the
<v Speaker 1>Atlanta Braves bullpen has got to be really, really good.
<v Speaker 1>And if they are, I think they will advance. I'm
<v Speaker 1>going to take the Braves to move on where they
<v Speaker 1>will face the number two Los Angeles Dodgers. Hey, the
<v Speaker 1>wildcard round should be a lot of fun. And from here,
<v Speaker 1>the Major League Baseball playoffs are just going to get
<v Speaker 1>even better. Hey, today on The Dose, the NFL season
<v Speaker 1>is now three weeks in. We're already starting to see
<v Speaker 1>some trends taking place. Is there any reason for panic
<v Speaker 1>just yet? We'll check in on that. Plus, the college
<v Speaker 1>football season has already seen a few surprises. We're going
<v Speaker 1>to be talking about which teams can actually keep those
<v Speaker 1>surprises going. And our Daily Dose Top 5 will be
<v Speaker 1>looking at the relationship between NFL head coaches and winning.
<v Speaker 1>But first, we do have a little bit of news
<v Speaker 1>to discuss. And let's stay briefly in Major League Baseball
<v Speaker 1>while the rest of the league, like I said, is
<v Speaker 1>getting ready for the postseason. And honestly... what might be
<v Speaker 1>the last season of pro baseball for quite a while,
<v Speaker 1>I feel I need to mention one other noteworthy team
<v Speaker 1>in Major League Baseball. Because my hometown Colorado Rockies just
<v Speaker 1>finished their 2026 season with a 58-104 overall record. Now
<v Speaker 1>that might not sound impressive to you, but it is.
<v Speaker 1>Because I want you to think about this. The Rockies
<v Speaker 1>have now lost at least 100 games in each of
<v Speaker 1>the past four seasons. Do you know the type of
<v Speaker 1>determination that you have to have to do that? Do
<v Speaker 1>you know the type of drunken determination back office ineptitude
<v Speaker 1>that it takes to fail so absurdly every single year?
<v Speaker 1>Do you grasp the dysfunctional penny-pinching management that is required
<v Speaker 1>to be this bad for this long? Hey, the Mumford
<v Speaker 1>brothers may not be thought of nationally as among the
<v Speaker 1>worst owners in all professional sports. Oh, but they should be.
<v Speaker 1>Because they have a great home field advantage, they have
<v Speaker 1>a really supportive fan base, and they just poop all
<v Speaker 1>over it every single year. Moving over to one story
<v Speaker 1>in the NFL, the New York Giants have traded for
<v Speaker 1>Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy. They have sent a 2027
<v Speaker 1>fifth round draft pick to Minnesota for McCarthy, who remember,
<v Speaker 1>he was a 2024 first round draft pick. McCarthy was
<v Speaker 1>actually taken by the Vikings with the number 10 overall pick,
<v Speaker 1>but he was the third string quarterback in Minnesota behind
<v Speaker 1>Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz. Stop. Let me repeat that again. J.J.
<v Speaker 1>McCarthy couldn't beat out Kyler Murray or Carson Wentz. That's
<v Speaker 1>saying a lot. Giants head coach John Harbaugh said after
<v Speaker 1>Sunday's victory over the Tennessee Titans, That Jameis Winston would
<v Speaker 1>remain the Giants starter even if the team added another
<v Speaker 1>quarterback and now they have. Okay. I hate to ask
<v Speaker 1>this question. But I feel like I kind of have to.
<v Speaker 1>Do you think there's any chance whatsoever that John Harbaugh
<v Speaker 1>is just going to tell running back Cam Scadaboo J.J.
<v Speaker 1>McCarthy is Is Jackson Dart? I mean, I don't know
<v Speaker 1>if Skadabo would even be able to tell the difference.
<v Speaker 1>When you look at Skadabo, he looks like a caveman
<v Speaker 1>dressed as a fire hydrant. I don't know that he's
<v Speaker 1>got a whole lot going in that melon that he
<v Speaker 1>smashes into things. I feel like John Harbaugh just goes
<v Speaker 1>up to him and says, you Skadabo. Can you say that?
<v Speaker 1>Say it with me. You scataboo. Good, good. This Jackson Dart.
<v Speaker 1>Can you say Jackson? Jackson. How dare you? How dare you?
<v Speaker 1>I don't know. I don't think he's going to know
<v Speaker 1>the difference. So the NFL season is now three weeks
<v Speaker 1>in and it might sound crazy. But there are already
<v Speaker 1>a few teams that have had a really disappointing start.
<v Speaker 1>And we know that when you don't meet those expectations early,
<v Speaker 1>it can actually turn your season into a spiraling mess.
<v Speaker 1>But just three weeks into the NFL season, which teams
<v Speaker 1>that have been disappointing should actually be hitting that panic button?
<v Speaker 1>Let's take a look. And let's start off with the
<v Speaker 1>defending AFC champion New England Patriots, who are now 1-2.
<v Speaker 1>In Week 1, remember they led the champion Seattle Seahawks
<v Speaker 1>for most of the game, and then quarterback Drake May
<v Speaker 1>melted down, he threw a few interceptions, and they lost
<v Speaker 1>a heartbreaker. The Patriots managed to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers
<v Speaker 1>in Week 2, but then they got blown out this
<v Speaker 1>past week by Jacksonville. Okay, so should the Patriots actually panic? Yes,
<v Speaker 1>yes they should, and I'll tell you why. The Patriots,
<v Speaker 1>of course, played one of the easiest schedules in NFL
<v Speaker 1>history last year. They had a soft, cushy path all
<v Speaker 1>the way to the Super Bowl. Here's the concern. While
<v Speaker 1>last year, quarterback Drake May looked like a bona fide
<v Speaker 1>franchise quarterback, once he has started facing legit competition, yet
<v Speaker 1>he's been significantly belittled. average so far this season Drake
<v Speaker 1>maybe or maybe not has thrown just one touchdown to
<v Speaker 1>six interceptions but it's not just him He's being sacked,
<v Speaker 1>he's being hit often because the offensive line isn't very good,
<v Speaker 1>and the Patriots are making way too many mistakes. They
<v Speaker 1>average seven penalties for 50 yards a game. That's not
<v Speaker 1>a well-disciplined group. I mean, the defense is playing reasonably well,
<v Speaker 1>but they're being put in terrible situations again and again. And,
<v Speaker 1>worst news, The schedule is tough this year. I mean,
<v Speaker 1>look at their own division. The Jets are no longer
<v Speaker 1>a pushover. So I'm going to say the Patriots can
<v Speaker 1>go ahead and smash that panic button, much like their
<v Speaker 1>head coach smashes a certain former sports journalist. We move
<v Speaker 1>to the AFC South, to the Houston Texans, who have
<v Speaker 1>yet to win a game after being predicted by many
<v Speaker 1>experts to actually be Super Bowl contenders this year. Well,
<v Speaker 1>the Texans have one of the best defenses in the league.
<v Speaker 1>And while quarterback C.J. Stroud has had his struggles, adding
<v Speaker 1>running back David Montgomery should help this offense. And by
<v Speaker 1>helping the offense, you would in turn help your defense, right? Yeah,
<v Speaker 1>that hasn't happened. After losing a wild shootout to the
<v Speaker 1>Buffalo Bills in Week 1, the Texans were blown out
<v Speaker 1>by Cincinnati in Week 2, and then they lost a
<v Speaker 1>tough one this past Sunday to their division rival, the
<v Speaker 1>Indianapolis Colts. Should the Texans be panicking already? I'm sorry,
<v Speaker 1>but yes, they should. And for a few reasons. One,
<v Speaker 1>the defense hasn't been up to par. They've allowed 25
<v Speaker 1>points a game. That's actually okay. That may take some
<v Speaker 1>time to get them back to the level they were
<v Speaker 1>at in years past. But that offense, it's a problem.
<v Speaker 1>And it's a big one. Through three games, that supposedly
<v Speaker 1>upgraded running game is averaging just 84 yards per game. Well,
<v Speaker 1>that means all the pressure still falls on C.J. Stroud.
<v Speaker 1>And we know that hasn't been a good combination. Currently,
<v Speaker 1>Stroud hasn't thrown any interceptions. Great. But that Texans offense
<v Speaker 1>is scoring just 18 points a game. And they're converting
<v Speaker 1>just 36% of their third downs, ranking them 22 out
<v Speaker 1>of 32 teams. That means that defense has to be
<v Speaker 1>on the field a lot. And they're going to wear down.
<v Speaker 1>The Texans have got to find a way to move
<v Speaker 1>the chains. And they better find it quickly. You know,
<v Speaker 1>the AFC West was expected to be a three-team race,
<v Speaker 1>but we all kind of expected one of those three
<v Speaker 1>teams to be the Los Angeles Chargers. Well, right now,
<v Speaker 1>the Chargers are one of five teams that has yet
<v Speaker 1>to win a game. The Chargers are now 0-3, and
<v Speaker 1>here's the worst news. The three games they have lost
<v Speaker 1>were to the Cardinals, not great, Raiders, we'll see, and Bills.
<v Speaker 1>Should the Chargers be panicking already? Yes, again, they should,
<v Speaker 1>because the schedule is actually going to get tougher. Remember,
<v Speaker 1>the Chargers brought Mike McDaniel in to upgrade that offense.
<v Speaker 1>He was going to help quarterback Justin Herbert finally reach
<v Speaker 1>his full potential. Yeah, so far that relationship is floundering.
<v Speaker 1>Herbert has thrown just three touchdowns to four interceptions, and
<v Speaker 1>the offense is scoring just 14 points a game. The
<v Speaker 1>running game is not consistent. Herbert is getting hit seven
<v Speaker 1>times a game, which averages out to about 120 times
<v Speaker 1>this year, and he's on pace to be sacked close
<v Speaker 1>to 50 times. Oh, and by the way, the Chargers
<v Speaker 1>defense is aging. That means they could wear down eventually. Now,
<v Speaker 1>head coach Jim Harbaugh, he won't just leave, right? I mean,
<v Speaker 1>say hypothetically that. A certain university, I don't know, in
<v Speaker 1>the Southern California region suddenly decided to fire their head
<v Speaker 1>coach because they can't ever beat Oregon. Harbaugh wouldn't just
<v Speaker 1>go take that job, right? Hmm. Something to think about.
<v Speaker 1>In one of the most exciting games this past weekend,
<v Speaker 1>the Baltimore Ravens scraped past the Dallas Cowboys in a
<v Speaker 1>dramatic 34-31 walk-off field goal with one second left, and
<v Speaker 1>the loss was dropped the Cowboys to 1-2 on the season.
<v Speaker 1>You'll remember they lost their opener to the New York
<v Speaker 1>Giants in ugly fashion, and then they scraped past Washington
<v Speaker 1>in Week 2. So should the Cowboys panic? It might
<v Speaker 1>surprise you, but I'm actually going to say no. For one,
<v Speaker 1>that offense still looks pretty potent. Dak Prescott is playing
<v Speaker 1>at a very high level. The Cowboys are scoring nearly
<v Speaker 1>30 points a game. I know, the defense is still
<v Speaker 1>a problem. But they have been getting stops sometimes. They've
<v Speaker 1>been a little bit tougher up front, at least. Here's
<v Speaker 1>the biggest reason the Cowboys don't need to panic. That
<v Speaker 1>NFC East division, it's looking pretty soft. They've already beaten Washington.
<v Speaker 1>The Giants are all banged up. The Eagles have shown
<v Speaker 1>at times that they can look ugly. The Cowboys can
<v Speaker 1>still contend for a playoff spot. I'm going to say
<v Speaker 1>Dallas does not need to panic just yet. Moving to
<v Speaker 1>the NFC North, the Green Bay Packers might be the
<v Speaker 1>biggest disappointment of the NFL season so far. They open
<v Speaker 1>up the season by giving up a 22-10 lead to
<v Speaker 1>the Minnesota Vikings. They ended up getting blown out by 17.
<v Speaker 1>They scraped out a win over the New York Jets
<v Speaker 1>in Week 2 and then got blown out by the
<v Speaker 1>Atlanta Falcons last Thursday, 35-14. Hey, it is all bad
<v Speaker 1>in Green Bay right now. Panic. Smash the panic button
<v Speaker 1>with a sledgehammer if you want. The running game is non-existent.
<v Speaker 1>The Packers, as a team, are averaging 48 yards more
<v Speaker 1>per game than I am. Quarterback Jordan Love has been horrible.
<v Speaker 1>and he's losing his confidence. He's under such constant duress,
<v Speaker 1>he can't even make the easy plays now. The defense
<v Speaker 1>is terrible. They're allowing over 340 yards and 30 points
<v Speaker 1>a game. Head coach Matt LaFleur should be fired at
<v Speaker 1>literally any second. I honestly can't believe he still has
<v Speaker 1>a job. We finish up with the preseason Vegas odds
<v Speaker 1>favorite to win the Super Bowl, and that, of course,
<v Speaker 1>is the Los Angeles Rams, who were blown out in
<v Speaker 1>their opener by the 49ers. They blew up the Giants
<v Speaker 1>in Week 2. But then in Week 3 this past weekend,
<v Speaker 1>after leading my Denver Broncos 16-0, the Rams allowed 30
<v Speaker 1>second-half points and lost on the road 30-26. And I
<v Speaker 1>realize many Rams fans are saying that the game was
<v Speaker 1>stolen from them because of poor officiating. I understand. But also,
<v Speaker 1>30 points in one half? I mean, you're supposed to
<v Speaker 1>be an All-Star team. But should the Rams be hitting
<v Speaker 1>the panic button? I'm going to say no, not yet. Yes,
<v Speaker 1>the Broncos may have shown one way to limit that offense,
<v Speaker 1>get pass rushers around quarterback Matt Stafford, and he tends
<v Speaker 1>to get real uncomfortable. But that's also easier said than done.
<v Speaker 1>But remember this, these guys haven't played together yet. And remember,
<v Speaker 1>two of their best players aren't playing, as Garrett Miles
<v Speaker 1>and Puka Nakua are out injured right now. So we
<v Speaker 1>need to see what the Rams actually look like when
<v Speaker 1>they get back to full health and they actually play
<v Speaker 1>together a little bit. Look, I know it's a fun
<v Speaker 1>narrative to make fun of the Rams, so-called dream team,
<v Speaker 1>and that they're struggling. But if they stay healthy, yeah,
<v Speaker 1>I think the Rams are still going to be a
<v Speaker 1>bit of a problem. Let's jump over to college football,
<v Speaker 1>where we had a bit of a prove-it weekend this
<v Speaker 1>last week. We had a number of matchups between top
<v Speaker 1>25 teams, and we saw varying results. But it's funny
<v Speaker 1>in college football, because sometimes we have to adjust our expectations.
<v Speaker 1>We have a team like, say, Clemson. Preseason, we're looking
<v Speaker 1>at them, and we're saying, oh, they might contend for
<v Speaker 1>the ACC. And then we go, oh, never mind. We
<v Speaker 1>were way off. But it goes the other way, too.
<v Speaker 1>What about those teams that we weren't really expecting that
<v Speaker 1>much from? And now they're proving they might actually be
<v Speaker 1>deserving of a seat at the table with the big boys.
<v Speaker 1>I've got a few teams here that if the cards
<v Speaker 1>fall right, they could actually have a path to making
<v Speaker 1>it all the way to the college football playoff. Let's
<v Speaker 1>start off in the Big 12. Prior to the season,
<v Speaker 1>everyone was talking about Texas Tech and Houston and even BYU.
<v Speaker 1>And I do think those three teams are all still contenders,
<v Speaker 1>but now nearly a month into the season, I think
<v Speaker 1>we can add another team, and that is the Utah Utes.
<v Speaker 1>You know, when it was announced that head coach Kyle
<v Speaker 1>Whittingham was retiring, there was obviously disappointment at Utah. But
<v Speaker 1>I think when it was announced that he would not,
<v Speaker 1>in fact, retire, but instead go to Michigan, I don't know,
<v Speaker 1>I feel like these players may have kind of bonded
<v Speaker 1>together to say, we're going to show Whittingham he should
<v Speaker 1>have stayed. The Utes are now 4-0 and ranked number
<v Speaker 1>13 in the country. And remember, they won't play Texas
<v Speaker 1>Tech in the regular season. And they get both Houston
<v Speaker 1>and BYU at home. Now, Utah doesn't throw the ball much,
<v Speaker 1>but they play smash-mouth football and they run the ball
<v Speaker 1>down your throat. Utah might be a team we need
<v Speaker 1>to watch. In the Big Ten, we know it's always
<v Speaker 1>Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan, USC. And of course, now we
<v Speaker 1>have to add Indiana into that mix after last year.
<v Speaker 1>But we might have a few more teams to watch
<v Speaker 1>in the Big Ten. and after Saturday, we may have
<v Speaker 1>to pay a little attention to the Iowa Hawkeyes. It
<v Speaker 1>seems like every few years, Kirk Ferentz puts together a
<v Speaker 1>team of seniors that honestly aren't that fun to watch,
<v Speaker 1>but they can be effective. Well, the Hawkeyes are also
<v Speaker 1>now 4-0. They're ranked number 14, and this past Saturday,
<v Speaker 1>they went into the big house and beat a Michigan
<v Speaker 1>team that had at least been playing well defensively. Now,
<v Speaker 1>this coming week, they will host the Ohio State Buckeyes.
<v Speaker 1>I mean, Iowa can't beat Ohio State, right? Well, their
<v Speaker 1>defense has been the best in the Big Ten so far,
<v Speaker 1>so we'll see. After their big win over the number
<v Speaker 1>four Ole Miss Rebels, I guess we have to mention
<v Speaker 1>the Florida Gators, who seem to be at least in
<v Speaker 1>contention for possibly making it to the college football playoff.
<v Speaker 1>The Gators now have the highest ranking at number eight
<v Speaker 1>since 2020 after they whipped Ole Miss 52-28, and they
<v Speaker 1>have a few people to thank for that. First, thank
<v Speaker 1>head coach John Summerall, who seems to have a little
<v Speaker 1>of that kind of Steve Spurry or Chippiness that we
<v Speaker 1>know Gainesville loves so much. Also, thank offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner,
<v Speaker 1>who joined Summerall staff from Georgia Tech, and he is
<v Speaker 1>doing some really good things with quarterback Aaron Filo, who
<v Speaker 1>has a number of weapons. And of course, they probably
<v Speaker 1>better thank running back Jaden Baugh, who might be the
<v Speaker 1>best running back in the country. Do you realize Jaden
<v Speaker 1>Baugh already has 600 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns? Now,
<v Speaker 1>Florida's schedule is still a monster. so I'm not fully
<v Speaker 1>sold yet. But if Florida can even split with Texas
<v Speaker 1>and Georgia, they might be in shape for the college
<v Speaker 1>football playoff. One more team in the SEC that deserves
<v Speaker 1>a mention, and that is the Mississippi State Bulldogs. No
<v Speaker 1>one has been talking about Starkville, but the Bulldogs just
<v Speaker 1>might sneak into that national conversation. Mississippi State is now
<v Speaker 1>number 16 in the country after winning their first four games.
<v Speaker 1>And while they haven't played a real tough schedule so
<v Speaker 1>far this season, this past weekend, they did beat Missouri.
<v Speaker 1>And they're doing it in a very similar way to
<v Speaker 1>the way they did back in 2014 when Dan Mullen
<v Speaker 1>was coaching a quarterback named Dak Prescott. Well, now they
<v Speaker 1>have Jeff Lebby coaching another tough athletic quarterback named Kamario Taylor.
<v Speaker 1>And this team is going to get a real good
<v Speaker 1>test this week because they will be hosting number 7 Alabama.
<v Speaker 1>And I have a feeling those cowbells are going to
<v Speaker 1>be clanging. Guess what? I got a fever. And the
<v Speaker 1>only prescription is more cowbells. Now Mississippi State can't possibly
<v Speaker 1>beat the Crimson Tide, right? I wouldn't think so, but
<v Speaker 1>if I'm being honest, I didn't think they'd be 4-0
<v Speaker 1>right now either. I will finish off our list of
<v Speaker 1>college football teams that are proving to be better than
<v Speaker 1>expected and just might end up trying to crash that
<v Speaker 1>college football playoff. And this team is once again in
<v Speaker 1>the Big Ten. And no, they haven't played anyone. And
<v Speaker 1>I mean anyone. This week might be their toughest test
<v Speaker 1>of the season so far. And this week they face bye.
<v Speaker 1>But the UCLA Bruins are now 4-0. under new head
<v Speaker 1>coach Bob Chesney, who came over from James Madison, and
<v Speaker 1>the Bruins are scoring some points. Yes, they play Cal,
<v Speaker 1>San Diego State, Purdue, and Maryland, but they're averaging 45
<v Speaker 1>points a game. And the key is the running of
<v Speaker 1>running back Wayne Knight, who already has nine touchdowns on
<v Speaker 1>the year. That's what's impressive. And their schedule is going
<v Speaker 1>to ramp up a bit. UCLA will face Oregon next week,
<v Speaker 1>and then they finish off the season going to Minnesota,
<v Speaker 1>home against Illinois, at Michigan, and then home against USC.
<v Speaker 1>But I mean, they do avoid Indiana. And they do
<v Speaker 1>avoid Ohio State. That could put them in a position
<v Speaker 1>where they could be one of those teams that might
<v Speaker 1>crash the college football playoff. Hey, once again this week,
<v Speaker 1>we do have some decent matchups. Like I said, number
<v Speaker 1>seven Alabama goes to number 16 Mississippi State. Number five
<v Speaker 1>Ohio State goes to number 14 Iowa. And number eight
<v Speaker 1>Florida goes to number 25 Missouri. We could get some
<v Speaker 1>more shakeups in college football this week. Now, as we
<v Speaker 1>do so many weeks here at The Daily Dose, we
<v Speaker 1>need to get over to our Daily Dose top five. Five!
<v Speaker 1>Do you ever wonder why some NFL teams just always
<v Speaker 1>seem to be on the losing side? I mean, think
<v Speaker 1>about some franchises in the league, and it seems like
<v Speaker 1>they're always losing. Of the 32 NFL teams in the league,
<v Speaker 1>four have never been to a Super Bowl, and 12
<v Speaker 1>have never won a Super Bowl. Well, they say success
<v Speaker 1>starts at the top. And if you don't have good ownership,
<v Speaker 1>it is really tough to win. But sometimes the problem
<v Speaker 1>is that ownership doesn't really know what they're doing. They
<v Speaker 1>make poor draft decisions. They make foolish moves in free agency.
<v Speaker 1>And so many times they hire the wrong head coaches. Today,
<v Speaker 1>our Daily Dose Top 5 is counting down the top
<v Speaker 1>five NFL franchises that have had the most head coaches
<v Speaker 1>since the year 2000. So in 25, 26 years, which
<v Speaker 1>teams keep hiring and keep firing more than anyone? Let's
<v Speaker 1>see if this correlates to on-the-field success. We start off
<v Speaker 1>at number five. And we start with a team that
<v Speaker 1>has a history of success. In fact, they've won five
<v Speaker 1>titles in their history. The crazy part of those titles
<v Speaker 1>is that two head coaches won all five. Going way
<v Speaker 1>back in NFL history, and I mean way back, to
<v Speaker 1>the year 1937, where Ray Flaherty was the head coach
<v Speaker 1>of the then Washington Redskins. He also won another title
<v Speaker 1>in 42. And then, well, Washington went on a bit
<v Speaker 1>of a title drought, but in 82, Joe Gibbs led
<v Speaker 1>them to a Super Bowl win. He did it again
<v Speaker 1>in 87, and he did it again in 91. But
<v Speaker 1>since Joe Gibbs, the now Washington Commanders have struggled to
<v Speaker 1>find much continuity, and they've struggled to win big games.
<v Speaker 1>Norv Turner was fired midway through the 2000 season. He
<v Speaker 1>was replaced with Terry Robiskey. We saw stints by Marty
<v Speaker 1>Schottenheimer and Steve Spurrier and Jim Zorn and Mike Shanahan
<v Speaker 1>and John Gruden stopped by. Bill Callahan and Ron Rivera
<v Speaker 1>all tried it. Now Dan Quinn is in his third season.
<v Speaker 1>But since 2000, the Washington Commanders have had 10 head
<v Speaker 1>coaches in that time. They are three and six in
<v Speaker 1>the postseason. Is that a coincidence? We're going to see.
<v Speaker 1>Washington comes in at number five. Hyde with those commanders
<v Speaker 1>at four or five or whatever is another team that
<v Speaker 1>has struggled to find consistent success. Now, maybe it's because
<v Speaker 1>they've had weird owners. Maybe it's because they haven't had
<v Speaker 1>many great coaches. But one thing you can't argue is
<v Speaker 1>they have had some talent. In fact, you can make
<v Speaker 1>a case that they had two of the greatest offensive
<v Speaker 1>players in NFL history and they broke both of them. Now,
<v Speaker 1>to be fair, this franchise does have titles. In fact,
<v Speaker 1>they have four of them. Notice I didn't say Super Bowls, though.
<v Speaker 1>I said titles. Because the Detroit Lions won four titles
<v Speaker 1>back in 35, 52, 53, and 57, but they really
<v Speaker 1>haven't done much since the Civil War ended. And some
<v Speaker 1>of that has to be attributed to their lack of
<v Speaker 1>consistent coaches. Since 2000, the Lions have also had 10
<v Speaker 1>head coaches. Gary Moeller, Marty Morningweg, Steve Mariucci, Dick Duran,
<v Speaker 1>Rod Marinelli, Jim Schwartz, Jim Caldwell, Matt Patricia, Daryl Bevel,
<v Speaker 1>and now Dan Campbell have all tried their hand as
<v Speaker 1>a Lions head coach. It hasn't gone well. Besides plowing
<v Speaker 1>through 10 head coaches, never reaching a Super Bowl, and
<v Speaker 1>ruining the careers above Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson, the
<v Speaker 1>Lions have gone just 2-5 in the NFL playoffs since 2000.
<v Speaker 1>And they come in tied at number 4. Or 5.
<v Speaker 1>Or whatever. We move next to number 3. And we
<v Speaker 1>get to a franchise that has the distinction of completing
<v Speaker 1>that one absolutely perfect season without a loss. Of course,
<v Speaker 1>Don Shula led the Miami Dolphins to that perfect season
<v Speaker 1>back in 72. He would retire in 1995 as the
<v Speaker 1>NFL's winningest coach with 347 career victories. But again, since Shula,
<v Speaker 1>it's been a little rough in South Florida. From Dave
<v Speaker 1>Wanstead to Jim Bates to Nick Saban. Takam Cameron, Tony Sperano,
<v Speaker 1>Todd Bowles, Joe Philbin, Dan Campbell, Adam Gase, Brian Flores,
<v Speaker 1>Mike McDaniel, and now Jeff Halfley. The Dolphins have gone
<v Speaker 1>through 12 coaches since 2000. In that time, they have
<v Speaker 1>also gone one and six in the NFL playoffs. Yeah,
<v Speaker 1>this just might be a trend. The Miami Dolphins come
<v Speaker 1>in at number three. We land at number two. And
<v Speaker 1>we get to another team that had success back in
<v Speaker 1>the days of... yore, but nothing recently. And we have
<v Speaker 1>another team on our list that has never been to
<v Speaker 1>a Super Bowl. Hmm, that's wacky. The Cleveland Browns won
<v Speaker 1>eight championships, but none since America won their independence from England.
<v Speaker 1>The Browns won five straight titles. from 46 to 50,
<v Speaker 1>and then won two more in 54 and 55, and
<v Speaker 1>one last one in 64. Since then, it's been some
<v Speaker 1>rough sledding. The Browns have never made it to a
<v Speaker 1>Super Bowl, and they mostly blame my hometown Denver Broncos
<v Speaker 1>for that. But since 2000, the Browns have had 13
<v Speaker 1>different head coaches. Chris Palmer, Butch Davis, Terry Robiskey again,
<v Speaker 1>Romeo Cornell, Eric Mangini, Pat Shermer, Rob Chudzinski, Mike Pettin,
<v Speaker 1>Hugh Jackson, Greg Williams, Freddie Kitchens, Kevin Stefanski, and Todd
<v Speaker 1>Munkin have all tried and have mostly all failed. In fact,
<v Speaker 1>the Browns have only played in four playoff games since 2000,
<v Speaker 1>and they have gone just one in three in those games.
<v Speaker 1>The Cleveland Browns have gone through a lot of head coaches.
<v Speaker 1>And as this list is proving, that is usually a
<v Speaker 1>recipe for losing. Cleveland Browns come in at number two.
<v Speaker 1>So we reach the number one team on our list
<v Speaker 1>today that has had the most head coaches since 2000.
<v Speaker 1>And again, this team has had success. They just haven't
<v Speaker 1>had much success recently. This franchise has been to the
<v Speaker 1>Super Bowl five times. They have won the Super Bowl
<v Speaker 1>three times. But they haven't been there since, well, actually
<v Speaker 1>since 2002. And they haven't done much since then. Going
<v Speaker 1>back to the year 2000, the Las Vegas Raiders have
<v Speaker 1>had 14 head coaches. John Gruden... I don't know, a
<v Speaker 1>few times. Bill Callahan, North Turner, Lane Kiffin, Tom Cable,
<v Speaker 1>Hugh Jackson, Dennis Allen, Tony Sperano, Jack Del Rio, Rick Passaccia,
<v Speaker 1>Josh McDaniels, Antonio Pierce, Pete Carroll, and now Clint Kubiak.
<v Speaker 1>And once again, this does seem to correlate with their
<v Speaker 1>postseason record. Because since 2000, the Raiders have gone just
<v Speaker 1>4-5 in the postseason. They did make it to the
<v Speaker 1>Super Bowl back in 2002, but... But they were curb
<v Speaker 1>stomped by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their former head coach,
<v Speaker 1>John Gruden. But hey, maybe the Raiders finally found their
<v Speaker 1>guy in Clint Kubiak. They are now 3-0. We'll see
<v Speaker 1>if that success can continue. Hey, next week on The Dose,
<v Speaker 1>the MLB playoffs will be rolling. The NFL and college
