Despite Safety Harbor’s natural beauty, the town may remain little known to some since it is tucked away, off main streets, on the western shores of Upper Tampa Bay in Northeast Pinellas County. And while not the pristine ancient wilderness it was in 1823, it was perhaps in part, what compelled a French businessman to settle here. This entrepreneur has been credited as the first to introduce citrus as a commercial crop on the Pinellas Peninsula which then brought more interest and dollars to the territory, which was a full 22 years before Florida became a state in 1845.  Fifty years after, and Florida’s citrus now thriving, Safety Harbor sat front and center as a health driven tourist destination, part of the early 20th century health tourism boom, where doctors would send their sickly affluent northern patients to “take the healing waters.”  Safety Harbor’s natural, mineral-rich “Espiritu Santo Springs,” was known to be such a place then – and still today. The Safety Harbor Resort & Spa established on this very spring in 1925 has for a century, arguably been THE primary draw to Safety Harbor – until now.
