An antidepressant dose increase, followed by days without sleep and racing thoughts, which her lawyers describe as textbook activation and a signal of an underlying bipolar condition. A postpartum program she walked herself into before Christmas 2022. A psychiatric hospital she checked herself into on New Year's Eve. The count of thirteen psychiatric prescriptions across four months, per her attorney's presentation and the Boston Globe's review of the record.\n\nThen the harder question. If the most medically literate patient imaginable cannot get a correct diagnosis inside a specialty program, what exactly is the standard for everybody else?\n\nClancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in the January 24, 2023 deaths of her three children. She does not deny causing them.\n\nThe conversation closes on the distance between understanding an illness and excusing a death.
