He's also said he'd welcome the death penalty being sought again at a new trial.\nBut the line that matters most came the day he pleaded. When the judge asked him directly, under oath, whether he was pleading guilty because he was guilty, he said yes. The Goncalves family responded within hours, taking the petition apart point by point. There was never a trial, never a cross-examination, and no motive was ever entered on the record.
