Jail call records showed 86 calls to Donna’s number during the week after Charlie’s 2023 conviction, totaling 2,118 minutes. Financial investigator Mary Hull testified that Donna managed details such as Charlie’s hotels, flights, and bills.\n\nKatherine Magbanua added another account of the mother-son relationship. She testified that Charlie would step away to call Donna during discussions about the murder arrangement and return afterward. Magbanua also testified that Charlie told her Donna had washed damp cash. Trial evidence showed Magbanua received 44 checks from the family dental practice, and Donna had signing authority on those checks. Donna’s defense argued she acted at Charlie’s direction and disputed the state’s claim that the payments tied her to the murder plot.\n\nDonna was convicted of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation in the murder-for-hire killing of Markel and sentenced to life in prison. Her direct appeal remains pending.
