His lawyers say half of that trust became mandatorily payable when he turned 30 on September 14, 2023. They estimate that distribution at about $558,000 and argue it became his before his parents died. The full trust is now reported at roughly $1.6 million.\n\nThe dispute is not over the larger Reiner family estate. It is over Nick's individual trust and whether money scheduled for him years earlier can be withheld while he awaits trial. His attorneys argue California's slayer statute does not reach funds that already vested before the alleged killings. Trustees have resisted releasing the money while the criminal case and the statute's consequences remain unresolved. Former private defense attorney Alan Jackson has said his firm would be prepared to resume representation if funding becomes available.\n\nMeanwhile, prosecutors allege Nick killed his parents after lying in wait, an allegation that remains unproven. Reiner has pleaded not guilty. His documented mental-health history may become part of the defense, but no formal insanity plea has been publicly established.
