Court records also show former private defense lawyer Alan Jackson received fees from the trust in April, even though Nick says he has not received money for his own commissary account. Jackson has said his firm is willing to return if funding becomes available.\n\nThe criminal stakes changed September 15 when District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced prosecutors will not seek the death penalty. Reiner still faces life without parole if convicted as charged, including the grand jury's lying-in-wait allegation. He has pleaded not guilty. His mental-health history may become part of his defense, but no formal insanity plea is publicly established.
