He suffered third-degree burns over roughly 50 percent of his body, a T-8 vertebra compression fracture, herniated discs, a traumatic brain injury, and an inhalation injury.\nHis recovery required approximately 30 surgeries and more than two-and-a-half years of treatment at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. The lasting effects of his injuries even changed the way he must manage temperature and sun exposure in everyday life.\nBut Dan refused to allow his injuries to define what came next.\nAfter receiving a specially adapted home from supporters, Dan made a promise: he would repay the investment others had made in him through the way he lived his life and the impact he would have on others.\nHe has spent the years since doing exactly that.\nDan founded Moran Enterprises, Inc., became deeply involved in organizations serving wounded warriors and military families, and served with groups including Hope For The Warriors and Helping A Hero. He was also appointed to the Texas Veterans Commission, where he ultimately served as vice chairman before completing nine years of service.\nFor Dan, leaving the Marine Corps never meant leaving the mission.\nThis conversation also explores the invisible injuries many veterans continue to battle, including PTSD, traumatic brain injury, depression, anxiety, and the lasting effects of combat trauma.\nOne emerging area of interest is ibogaine-assisted treatment. Early research involving Special Operations veterans with traumatic brain injury has shown encouraging improvements in PTSD symptoms, depression, anxiety, disability, and cognitive functioning.
