{"type":"rich","version":"1.0","title":"Bryan Kohberger's Judge Knew WHAT Before the Plea?!","description":"Bryan Kohberger’s post-conviction fight now turns in part on what Judge Steven Hippler knew before accepting the plea that ended the University of Idaho murder case without a trial. A May 20, 2025 defense filing told Hippler that Kohberger was having difficulty comprehending adverse rulings and understanding their effect on the case as a whole.\n\nAnne Taylor’s team did not tell the court Kohberger was legally incompetent. The lawyers expressly denied that conclusion. They wanted more time to investigate his ability to rationally assess the case, make consequential choices, and receive expert help communicating about a possible resolution. Hippler denied the continuance on June 26. Kohberger pleaded guilty six days later.\n\nAt the July 2 hearing, Kohberger admitted killing Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. He also pleaded guilty to burglary, told Hippler he understood the agreement, denied coercion, and said he was pleading guilty because he was guilty. He is serving four consecutive life sentences without parole plus a ten-year burglary sentence.\n\nKohberger now alleges ineffective assistance, pressure, false promises, and withheld evidence. One example he raised was hair from Ethan Chapin’s hand. Defense expert Ruth Ballard had already examined a hair from that location, found it morphologically consistent with Chapin’s reference hair, and Taylor filed the analysis before the plea.\n\nEric Faddis joins Tony Brueski to examine the question the unsealed memo creates without answering it for the court: whether the concerns Taylor raised before the plea can support Kohberger’s effort to undo the sworn answers he gave six days after Hippler denied more time.\n\nListen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292\nWant to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
