The message still demonstrated access to information most people would never know to look for.\n\nOn September 28, a separate message reached Nancy's friend Lauren Serpa. According to Serpa, the sender claimed Nancy was being held alive in Mexico and demanded six Bitcoin. The message included supposed proof of life, but the Pima County Sheriff's Department said on September 29 that investigators had determined the contact was not credible. Coffindaffer has warned that AI-generated images and cryptocurrency can make these schemes look more convincing while giving scammers tools to hide who they are.\n\nBehind those scams is an unresolved kidnapping investigation. Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her Tucson-area home on January 31. The FBI released video of a masked, armed individual at her front door, and her pacemaker monitor missed its expected transmission at 2:28 a.m. on February 1. Authorities also released two February ransom notes. The first sought $4 million in Bitcoin and described details from the home; the second claimed Nancy had died and was buried in nature.\n\nWith a $1.2 million combined reward still available, the question is no longer whether scammers are circling this family. They are.
