Look at what the book requires and the problem comes into focus. Executions need a drug and a person who can get a line into a vein, and both are getting harder for a state to obtain.\n\nThe medical profession's own organizations instruct doctors and nurses not to participate. The companies that manufacture these drugs for hospital use refuse to sell them to corrections departments. Tennessee's workaround is a supplier whose name state law keeps out of public records, and the state has told courts that disclosure would drive that supplier away permanently.\n\nThere is a reason to be skeptical of what that cover has concealed. Tennessee's 2022 independent review, run by former U.S. Attorney Ed Stanton, found the state never provided the pharmacy mixing its execution chemicals with a copy of the protocol, and that required endotoxin testing never happened.
