Getting to a real answer means asking who the state had to rely on to get there.\n\nDoctors and nurses are told by their own professional organizations to stay out of execution chambers, which leaves a state hunting for willing hands. Drug manufacturers producing pentobarbital for patients will not supply it for executions. Tennessee's answer to both problems is a layer of confidentiality: state law shields parts of the execution process, and the state has argued that naming its supplier would cost it that supplier.\n\nTennessee has been caught behind that curtain once already. The 2022 review by former U.S. Attorney Ed Stanton found the state never gave the pharmacy making its drugs a copy of the lethal injection protocol, and that chemicals went out untested for endotoxins.
