Courtney Clenney has been sitting in a Miami-Dade jail cell since August 2022, charged with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of her boyfriend, Christian Obumseli. She says she acted in self-defense. The prosecution says the physical evidence contradicts her account. And every time this case gets close to trial, something else collapses. The April 27th trial date fell apart when roughly 15 to 16 Williams rule witnesses — people the state needs to establish a pattern of violent behavior — failed to appear for depositions. Before that, a judge suppressed most of Obumseli’s secret recordings. Before that, the lead prosecutor stepped down after reportedly accessing privileged defense communications, including what court filings describe as the defense’s own trial strategy outline. Before that, charges against Clenney’s parents were dropped because the evidence behind them was obtained through a privilege violation. The defense is armed with Dr. Lenore Walker, the psychologist who coined Battered Woman Syndrome, ready to testify that Clenney fits the profile. The prosecution has a medical examiner’s finding that reportedly contradicts Clenney’s account of throwing the knife from across the room. Both sides are now targeting August. The judge has warned this is the final continuance. Jury selection is going to be critical.
