Big Broadway Energy: Hir with Newt Rametta

In this episode of Big Broadway Energy, host Stephen Riordan discusses the new production by Dead Canary Theater, titled Hir, which opens its second season on May 14th at The Studio at 620. The play, written by acclaimed performance artist Taylor Mac, explores complex family dynamics against a backdrop of domestic and elder abuse, discrimination, and PTSD.
Newt Rametta, one of the cast members, joins the podcast to discuss their character, Max—an opinionated teenager navigating a chaotic family situation. The conversation touches on the themes of identity, authenticity, and the challenges of portraying complex characters, especially as a trans actor.
The two discuss the power of theater to tell urgent stories, emphasizing that the emotional depth and absurdity in Hir encourage audiences to reflect on their own lives and experiences. Stephen and Newt convey their excitement for the play, inviting listeners to experience the profound themes it tackles.
The episode closes with an encouragement to attend Hir and recognizes the collective effort involved in bringing these essential narratives to the stage. Hosts remind listeners to connect and explore the rich world of theater.
You can catch Hir from May 14th to May 25th by visiting the Studio@620's website (https://thestudioat620.org/) for more details!
