Did Lindsay Clancy Know Exactly What She Was Doing?

That question is the whole trial, and it's the one the mailbag keeps sending in a hundred different ways. Live, Tony Brueski reads it and works through what a Plymouth County jury is actually being asked to decide.

Lindsay Clancy, a former nurse, has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of her three children — Cora, five, Dawson, three, and eight-month-old Callan — at the family's Duxbury, Massachusetts home in January 2023. The defense, led by Kevin Reddington, argues misdiagnosis, overmedication, and postpartum psychosis. Prosecutors have signaled a different frame entirely.

That frame surfaced when the Commonwealth fought to keep other mothers from testifying. Prosecutor Jennifer Sprague described women who lived through postpartum depression and psychosis without harming their children — women who locked themselves in a room, women who drove away. Judge William Sullivan excluded those witnesses. The comparison behind the objection is heading to trial regardless.

The mail on this case is unlike anything this show gets. Mothers describing intrusive thoughts they never told a doctor about. People who have flipped positions a dozen times and can't settle. People asking who is speaking for three children in that courtroom.

Eighteen jurors will be seated instead of sixteen. Patrick Clancy, who publicly forgave his wife, appears on the defense witness list. Lindsay Clancy is paralyzed from the waist down and has been held at Tewksbury State Hospital. She has never given law enforcement a single statement — she was hospitalized from that night forward, which means a jury has to reconstruct her state of mind from medication records, timelines, and search history rather than from her.

Every ending here is a loss. A conviction means prison for life. An acquittal by reason of insanity means a hospital and reviews. Cora, Dawson, and Callan are gone under either one.

Bring your questions.
