Who Bryan Kohberger And Lindsay Clancy Are Talking To

Bryan Kohberger has an audience. Lindsay Clancy has a jury. Both are cases about what a person claims was happening inside their own head, and this is the full conversation on both.

Tony Brueski and psychotherapist Shavaun Scott, whose thirty-plus years cover private practice, community mental health, crisis teams, and forensic programs.

Kohberger pleaded guilty to the University of Idaho murders and said so out loud, four separate times. A year later he filed a petition to withdraw it and told the New York Times his actual innocence is his truth. He also thanked everyone who believes in his innocence, which is a real constituency, and this conversation gets into what that constituency provides to a man in a cell. It also traces the same behavior back through H.H. Holmes and Henry Lee Lucas, whose confessions grew and shrank with the size of the audience.

Clancy does not deny killing Cora, Dawson, and Callan. Her defense is postpartum psychosis and catastrophic overmedication. Prosecutors told the jury she manipulated her doctors, wanted a quick and easy fix, and then quit trying. Her attorney told the same jury she wanted off her medications and had no motive. The conversation goes at which reading the record supports and who gets protected by the other one.

One case is a man building a room to stand in. The other is a woman whose treatment history became the case against her.

Scott also addresses the temptation to treat these as two versions of one story, and why that flattening does real damage. It lands hardest on the families in both cases, who end up watching the public argue about the inside of somebody else's head.
