rich 1.0 Mississippi's chief medical examiner is facing scrutiny that goes far beyond the Nolan Wells case — and that scrutiny is exactly why the Wells family has no reason to trust whatever her autopsy says, even if the science is perfect.Dr. Staci Turner ruled a 2021 in-custody death "undetermined" after documenting injuries consistent with compression by deputies. Three independent pathologists — recruited by the New York Times and Mississippi Today — reviewed the same evidence and unanimously called it homicide. The grand jury used Turner's finding and filed no charges. One of the deputies is now in federal prison for the "Goon Squad" torture cases out of the same Rankin County Sheriff's Department.Turner also affirmed the official ruling on Trey Reed, a Black student found hanging from a tree at Delta State University. That family disputes the finding. A Change.org petition is now demanding an independent investigation into Turner's office.The pattern reaches beyond any one case.
