Prosecutors say she acted intentionally and rationally. A jury in Plymouth Superior Court has to choose between those readings. Clancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Cora, Dawson, and Callan at their Duxbury home. Nobody in the courtroom disputes that she did it. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins Tony Brueski for the first of three conversations built to help a general audience understand what is actually being argued. Shavaun has more than thirty years in practice across trauma, anxiety, depression, and the psychology of violence. She opens with prevalence. Researchers describe episodes that move between disorientation and complete lucidity within the same day. The timing gets addressed head on. This condition usually arrives within days or weeks of delivery, and Callan was eight months old. Shavaun untangles psychosis from psychopathy, two words the public treats as interchangeable and clinicians do not. She marks the boundary between an intrusive thought and a voice issuing instructions. She explains why a patient would hide the worst of it from the people treating her. And she takes on whether this illness damages a person's grip on right and wrong, which is the question the insanity defense actually turns on. She is the author of Nightbird.
