More than three years later, the murder-for-hire trial built around his death opened in Jacksonville — and it started with the confessed gunman refusing to testify. Henry Tenon told investigators he was the shooter and signed a plea deal to testify against Mario Fernandez and Shanna Gardner, Jared's ex-wife. Four years and one day after the killing, Tenon stood before a judge and asked for a trial instead. Prosecutors did not object. Bank records show Tenon had 52 cents to his name the month before Jared died. Within weeks of the shooting, $10,000 in checks from a rental company Fernandez and Gardner owned together landed in his account, memo lines reading "landscaping and cleaning" and "keeping up with the roof." A later $5,000 check allegedly carried the memo "Kickstarter" and "Good luck!" A grand jury charged Fernandez with a count tied directly to the fact that Jared's daughter was in the car. Prosecutors dropped it two weeks before jury selection and never explained why, then days later told the court the state has overwhelming evidence of a conspiracy — including an unidentified driver who left the scene in a pickup truck. Fernandez's defense says the money paid for real property work and nothing changed hands before Jared died. Prosecutors point to dozens of calls between Fernandez and Tenon and a jailhouse informant who says Fernandez tried to pin the murder on Jared's widow, Kirsten. The trial runs August 17 through 28.
