Is Lindsay Clancy's Case Making True Crime Fans Worse?

A woman in the comment section describes shaking hands. Another says she hasn't slept properly since the trial started. A third has been posting about the case every night past midnight for two weeks. They follow the Lindsay Clancy trial closely. They'd all tell you they care about justice.

Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins Tony Brueski to ask the question the true crime audience doesn't want to hear: at what point does this stop being about the case and start being about you?

Shavaun has spent thirty years working with people in crisis. She recognizes the pattern in the Clancy comment sections — people channeling unrelated anger into a target that feels noble, mistaking emotional intensity for moral clarity, and using someone else's tragedy as an outlet for pain they haven't addressed. She explains why the people doing it can't see it, why the platforms reward it, and why the case itself gets worse as the audience gets louder.

She addresses the human cost. Patrick Clancy receives death threats from people who've never read a court transcript. Lindsay has been reduced from a person to a debate prop. Creators with massive audiences are monetizing the conspiracy theories while the families live with the consequences.

Shavaun closes on whether belief reversal is possible — and what she would say to the person who's convinced they've figured out what really happened.

Tony Brueski and psychotherapist Shavaun Scott, author of Nightbird, discuss when true crime engagement becomes something else.
