rich 1.0 The defense in the Matthew Farwell case is building its strategy around Sandra Birchmore's mental health records, her journals, and her history of instability. They want the jury to see a woman who killed herself. Prosecutors want the jury to see a twelve-year-old girl who walked into a police youth program and spent the next decade being exploited by men in uniform. Four officers connected to the Stoughton Police Department had involvement with Sandra. Prosecutors allege Farwell was the first, beginning when she was fifteen. He allegedly tracked her location, made her delete texts, and sent at least twenty messages in the year before her death describing choking her by the throat. His DNA was the major contributor on the ligature found around her neck. The state crime lab identified unknown male DNA in 2021 but never obtained Farwell's sample. The FBI matched it three years later. A strangulation expert found Sandra's hyoid bone fractured with zero documented cases of that injury in women found seated. Abrasions on her nose, hemorrhage in a neck muscle, a broken necklace on the bedroom floor. The original investigation ruled it suicide before the autopsy. The ME wasn't told it might be a homicide. Before her death, Sandra booked prenatal appointments and planned to announce her pregnancy on Valentine's Day. Farwell had attended a training on staging versus suicide in hanging deaths. The defense says Sandra's damage proves she killed herself. The prosecution says the damage proves what was done to her.
