rich 1.0 Host Stephen Riordan is joined by actors Marjorie Joseph and Nadine Young to discuss their upcoming production of The Wash. The play is a collaboration between The Studio@620 and Power Stories Theater in Tampa. The Plot: Based on true events from 1881, the play follows a group of Black washerwomen in Atlanta. Tired of receiving inadequate pay—often just spoiled food or barter goods for their hard labor—they organize a revolutionary movement to demand fair compensation. Themes: The play highlights themes of sisterhood, the importance of unsung female heroes in history, and the power of ordinary people organizing to effect change. The Production: The cast and host emphasized the collaborative nature of the production, led by executive producing director Erika Sutherland. The rehearsal process was described as fun, efficient, and organic, with a heavy emphasis on building authentic chemistry among the ensemble. Artistic Vision: The actors noted that the set design at The Studio at 620 is highly immersive, designed to transport the audience directly into 1881. Audience Takeaway: Both guests hope that audiences leave the theater understanding that this history was a reality. They want to inspire viewers to recognize their own power to organize and create positive change in their communities.Event Details Show Dates: The Wash opens on October 1st and runs through October 11th.
