rich 1.0 The two weapons used to kill Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were never recovered. Now Alex Murdaugh's defense says a reported state grand-jury inquiry into what happened to those weapons could matter to his retrial, and it wants the underlying records before a second jury is seated. In a September 30 motion, the defense asked for witness statements, investigative reports and grand-jury material concerning allegations that law-enforcement officers handled or concealed weapons and clothing after the murders. Reporting cited in the filing links Yemassee Police Chief Greg Alexander to those allegations. Alexander, a longtime Murdaugh family friend who was at Moselle that night, has not been charged and denies wrongdoing through his attorney. The defense is also fighting for access to raw cellphone extraction files, ballistics material, DNA evidence and crime-scene scan data. Prosecutors answered the cellphone request by saying the State already produced the records it possessed during the original discovery process. Judge Debra McCaslin has set an October 16 hearing for urgent evidence disputes. The larger question is how much the documented problems from the first investigation matter now. Defense filings say location data from Maggie's phone was overwritten after SLED recovered it. Trial testimony showed stains on Alex's T-shirt tested negative for human blood on confirmatory testing. Analysts also found a small amount of unrelated male DNA beneath Maggie's fingernails, evidence now approved for additional independent testing. Murdaugh's murder convictions were overturned in May 2026 because of jury-interference findings involving the former clerk of court. The retrial begins April 5, 2027, in Sumter County.
