Gaming is another layer of Facebook that doesn’t get talked about amidst all the hype, but as a means of generating revenues and increasing engagement, it’s a solid strategy.
This of course isn’t lost on Facebook who announced recently that gaming activity on the site is increasing. According to Doug Purdy, Facebook’s Director of Developer Products, more than 230 million people played games on the platform for the month of July.
That wasn’t the only bit of good news. Purdy also announced that 8 out of the 10 top grossing iPhone apps are integrated with Facebook. This has created an interesting and rather helpful relationship for third party developers and platforms. The massive engagement on Facebook has led to massive levels of traffic for both Apple and Google. Both saw over 150 million unique visitors in the month of July directly attributed to Facebook.
Other platforms like Zynga have also benefited immensely from Facebook, so much so that in recent months the gaming giant has started to transition away from the womb that gave it life. Today Zynga is invested heavily in mobile gaming and creating its own standalone platform for gamers to enjoy some of its biggest selling games.
Overall the 230 million gamers on its platform is good news, not least because that is an awfully large number of people. At the very least that 230 million eyeballs for ads.
