Trouble brewing for Munster schools rugby

A controversial rule change proposed last August could mean that students transferring from one school to another in Munster would be unable to compete in the Munster Senior Schools Cup Competition for one year after enrolling. This proposal came about as an attempt to curb players leaving club rugby and also to tackle players transferring to schools solely for rugby reasons. But, some coaches are arguing that the rule change could prevent players from disadvantaged areas getting the opportunity to play rugby at a high level and there is now a threat of legal action to prevent the rule change going through. I visited Limerick this week and met some players who have benefitted from transferring to rugby schools and I also met with Irish international and St Munchin’s past pupil, Keith Earls.
