How To Win: Sonia O'Sullivan

Jan 13, 2016, 11:38 AM

Sonia O'Sullivan from Cobh, County Cork is one of Ireland's most outstanding athletes of all time. In fact she was one of the world's leading female 5000m runners for most of the 1990s and early 2000s; winning three European Championship gold medals, two World Cross-Country Championship gold medals, not to mention silver medals in the 1993 World Championships and the glorious silver medal for Ireland in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. Sonia has set many standing Irish and world records. These records range from the Irish and World record for 2000m which she set in Edinburgh in 1994, to the Women's Mini Marathon which she completed in a record breaking time of 31 mins 28 seconds.

Though she retired from competitive high performance running in 2007, Sonia became 'Chef de Mission' and team mentor for Team Ireland for the London 2012 Olympic Games and she has continued to dedicate her time to the sport in the form of mentoring, motivating, and the occasional marathon! In October 2015 she returned to Dublin to run the Dublin Marathon inspiring many to continue running throughout their life.

In this short audio cut for 'How to Win' Sonia shares the mindset of an athlete and what it takes to be a winner and her own sense of the key power of mental strength and confidence in someone's ability to win or achieve their potential. How to Win is a TV documentary produced by the award winning Athena Media team and it will screen later in 2016 on Setanta Sports.
