56 - Composer Leo Birenberg talks solving the musical puzzles of film and TV

Dec 03, 2018, 07:00 AM

Leo Birenberg is a composer for film and television, whose music has been featured in series like Dreamworks' "Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny" and YouTube’s "Cobra Kai."

He's contributed additional music to a films like "Frozen," "Edge of Tomorrow," "The Peanuts Movie," and many more.

Leo grew up playing music in Chicago, and after attending NYU, moved west to Los Angeles.

He eventually crossed paths with the award-winning composer Christophe Beck, working as a writer, arranger and producer. Learning from Beck, Leo says he was able to learn how to "solve musical puzzles."

He compares composing music for film and television to extended problem solving. Trying to figure out the right music and timing in order to further convey a feeling or emotion to the audience.

He joined me on Olympic & Bundy to talk about the process of scoring for a film or television series, his musical background, how he almost didn't pursue music, and a lot more.
