Show #813

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 18th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

VOLKSWAGEN'S NEW ID.4 CROSS EV PRODUCTION MODEL BEFORE THEY WANTED YOU TO SEE IT

"While we’ve already seen concept and pre-production versions of Volkswagen’s upcoming electric, MEB-based SUV, the ID.4 Cross, VW wasn’t quite ready to show the world the final production version. Well, too bad. The ID.4 Cross production model has been leaked" says Jason at Jalopnik: "The leaked images show a number of views of the crossover/SUV-type vehicle, which will also be VW’s first MEB-based car to be sold in North America, and can be considered the vanguard of VW’s push into mass-market battery-electric vehicles. The real unanswered question here is the price; if VW can sell these things for $35,000 or less, well-equipped, then I think they’d really have a viable Tesla Model 3 competitor on their hands."

LUCID TO UNVEIL BATTERY-ELECTRIC AIR LUXURY SEDAN ONLINE SEPT. 9

"To the growing list of automakers planning digital reveals of important new models in the wake of the coronavirus, we can add Lucid Motors, which said Wednesday it will unveil the production version of its much-anticipated Air luxury electric sedan during an online event Sept. 9." reports Autoblog: "We’ve already seen a lot of the prototype itself, including a teaser of the first-edition Dream Edition variant, but final specifications have remained guarded. Lucid says the official reveal will give us a look at the final interior and exterior designs, and we’ll also learn new information on production specs, available configurations and pricing. The car is expected to offer up to 400 miles of driving range, and CEO Peter Rawlinson has hinted that a flagship tri-motor version will pack as much as 1,800 horsepower."

OPEL ZAFIRA-E LIFE CAN TOW UP TO 1,000 KG

"Opel has given details of the all-electric version of the Zafira Life, the van which is scheduled to go on sale in early 2021. It shares technology with other PSA transporters that all received electrification lately." says electrive: "The Opel Tafira E-Life’s drive corresponds to that of its sister models, the Peugeot e-Traveller and Citroën ë-Spacetourer: the electric machine has an output of 100 kW, and there are two battery versions with 50 or 75 kWh to choose from.  As an option, Opel will offer a trailer coupling with which the battery-electric van can pull trailer loads of up to 1,000 kilograms. There is sufficient storage space in the vehicle itself, while the Large version with a length of 5.30 metres offers up to 4,500 litres of loading volume. But if you have occupied all the seats, you will probably have to take the trailer after all.”

FORD WILL DEBUT ITS OWN HANDS-FREE DRIVING SYSTEM WITH MUSTANG MACH-E

"Ford is taking on Tesla with its own advanced driving system that'll debut with its first all-electric vehicle.  Ford's Co-Pilot360 includes a hands-free driving experience called Active Drive Assist for more than 100,000 miles of highway throughout the U.S. and Canada. It was announced Thursday as the Autopilot equivalent for Ford's upcoming Tesla Model Y competitor, the all-electric Mustang Mach-E. "says Mashable: "The new driving feature is similar to General Motors' Super Cruise already in new Cadillacs in that it tracks the driver's eye and head position. You have to pay attention, even when the car is driving itself. An infrared driver-facing camera tracks your eye gaze and head position and alerts you if you need to pay attention or take over driving. The camera still works with sunglasses. On a call with Ford representatives this week, a rep shared how the new system has been tested on more than 650,000 miles in every U.S. state and in all driving conditions from rainstorms to cloudy nights and sunny days."

BRAND-NEW BUICK VELITE 7 EV CROSSOVER UNVEILED IN CHINA

"Earlier this year, we got to know the new Buick Velite 7 EV in a rather informal way, through a leak courtesy of the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Now, General Motors has just officially unveiled Buick’s first electric crossover that it will launch later this year, expanding its offer of electrified vehicles in the Chinese market." repotrs GM Authority. Whlst CNET says: "Well, the shape looks an awful lot like a standard Chevy Bolt EV and we know the Bolt EUV (that stands for "electric utility vehicle") will share GM's BEV2 electric car platform. Buick China didn't share finer details, but this looks slightly larger than a standard Bolt EV as well. When asked about the Velite 7's relation to the Chevy Bolt EUV, a Chevy spokesperson confirmed with Roadshow the two models will share the same platform but did not comment further. Something slightly greater than the Bolt EV's current 259-mile range seems more realistic. In fact, Buick mentioned a "new modular high-performance lithium-ion battery" for the Velite 7 with a higher energy density, so it's likely it'll go a little farther than a Bolt EV."

FORMULA E FINALE COULD CAUSE MORE CARS TO RUN OUT OF ENERGY

"The championship announced on Wednesday that six races will take place across nine days in August as part of three double-header events at the German facility to complete the current campaign. Each pair of races will run on a different configuration at the airfield, which will heavily restrict the amount of simulator preparation each team can undertake." says Matt Kew for Autosport magazine: "Jaguar has also announced a seven-race programme at Berlin Tempelhof to complete the 10-round calendar for the final season of the I-PACE eTrophy series, subject to FIA confirmation. The one-make electric SUV series will be mothballed at the end of the 2019-20 campaign, after only two seasons of its three-year deal to support certain Formula E events."
