Dave Dennis/ Neil Spence - Radio London, June 66

Episode 599,   Dec 06, 2012, 07:45 PM

A true character. ‘That’s a lovely one, there’. Neil Spence, as the ‘Double D’ Dave Dennis, was a powerful voice and influence on the pirate Radio London from launch. His sonorous tones powered in on the station’s early afternoon programme, with the emphasis on skilled delivery rather than content. By 1969, back on land, he became the first Programme Director at the United Biscuits Network, a station which was to become the training ground for much of the first wave of ILR.

Neil moved to Trent in Nottingham, the 13th ILR station to come on-air, where he was appointed the station’s second ever programme director. After a spell launching the National Broadcasting School in 1980, he later retired to Humby, in Lincolnshire, where he died in 2007.
