Sport on 4 (1977-1998) offered Radio 4 listeners a Saturday morning preview of the day’s sporting events plus interviews with those playing or commentating on sport. It was a more considered response to the frantic live coverage over on Radio 2 (later Radio Five and Five Live).

The first presenter was former England cricket captain and Test Match commentator Tony Lewis. Taking over in 1986, and with the programme through to 1998 was ex-rugby international and former head of OB Cliff Morgan.

Here’s Cliff on 3 January 1987 with clips from the programme and an interview with journalist and sports commentator E.W. Swanton.
