Bill Mitchell - The Story

Episode 734,   Jun 10, 2013, 10:32 PM

I had one. Most jocks had one. If you felt there was any possibility of a career in radio you bought two things: a Sonovox jingle and a Bill Mitchell voiced line.

He had the deepest voice in radio voiceovers. It featured in numerous TV and radio ads, from Flake to Carlsberg and Denim, as ‘70s advertisers tried to make perfume sound masculine. He appeared in films too; and was the voice on the wonderful spoken rendition of the Yin & Yan skit of Bread’s ‘If’. But he’s most famous to us as the guy who said every disc jockey’s name and a host of cheesy 70s and 80s programme titles.

He was a character too, back in those pre-ISDN days. Hear here the full tale of the most famous voiceover of all in a, typically great, Radio 4 2009 documentary, narrated by Miriam Margoyles and produced by Paul Hardy for Smooth Operations. Bill died in August 1997, aged 62.
