Science: Africa’s laser breakthrough

When lasers were invented in 1960, they were called "a solution looking for a problem". Since then, they have become ubiquitous, finding applications in every section of modern society, from consumer electronics, information technology, to barcode scanners and medicine. Scientists in South Africa who are working on laser cutting technology say they have a concept that will change the way lasers will work, making them cheaper and more efficient.
