Paul Martin's Business Update - November 18th

The manufacturing sector in this province has just come off a record breaking month.

Manufacturing, in broad terms, has been on the rise in this province for several years, further evidence of a broadening of the economic base and growing global demand for the things we produce such as dryland farming technology and equipment.

The last monthly figures, although just a brief snapshot, come from September and they represent a high water mark, topping the $1.3 billion milestone in monthly sales. That is about nine percent higher than August and more than 10 per cent higher than a year earlier. Basically all the year's gains came in that month alone, which was the second best improvement on a year-over-year basis in the country. Only PEI did better and their numbers are so small a single order can profoundly change the percentages.

According to StatsCan the big improvement came as a result of deliveries of durable goods. In other words, bigger stuff like machinery, highlighting how this economy is changing and one of the rare occasions where we sold more than Manitoba manufacturers.
