Long-time residents of this province may find a statistic in the year-end assessment of job creation in Saskatchewan a bit surprising. It turns out that in 2013, the sector of the economy that generated the highest percentage increase in employment was …agriculture. The number of people who cited agriculture as their primary occupation rose by just under 11 per cent. We’ve never seen a number that high in our history.

These findings were contained in an examination of the 2013 employment market prepared by SaskTrends Monitor. It also showed that in broad terms private sector job expansion was considerably higher than the public sector which makes government a smaller piece of the puzzle in relative terms.

The most significant job growth was in Saskatoon – up more than seven percent. Regina was next followed by the southwest part of the province. Surprisingly all other regions – the north, the south-east, west-central and east-central – actually produced a decline in employment, adding further fuel to the discussion about which is the province’s economic engine…urban or rural. This would suggest it is the cities.
